Ross Montgomery has worked as a pig farmer, a postman and a primary school teacher, so writing books was the next logical step. He spent his childhood reading everything he could get his hands on, from Jacqueline Wilson to Beano annuals, and it taught him pretty much everything that's worth knowing. If you looked through his pockets you'd find empty crisp packets, lists of things to do, and a bottle of that stuff you put on your nails to stop you biting them. He lives in London with his girlfriend, a cat called Fun Bobby, and a cactus on every available surface.

Spellstone is a phenomenal - and I don't use that word lightly! - MG adventure story, giving the reader not only an escape into a magical reality but also a reminder of the goodness found in humanity. It is an exceptional story and one I strongly believe should be in all KS2 classrooms and primary school libraries.

Evie is a girl who goes unnoticed by everyone around her. She is ignored, forgotten and wondering where she fits in the world. Then she meets Wainwright, a seemingly-normal bearded man who appears to know and understand her from their first encounter. Not only that, he tells her how important she is and invites her to join him and the others on a quest. What follows is masterful story-telling where the every single scene comes to life, from the everyday to the dreamscapes that some can travel into. I was hooked from the first few pages with an opening chapter that surpasses many I've encountered recently.

I've been a fan of Ross Montgomery's books since I read Max and the Millions a few years ago, an underrated genius of a children's book. It, like Spellstone, is centred around a sense of not fitting in or being on the outside and through the course of the exciting, magical events set in fantastic realities, find their purpose and where they belong. Both books gave me goosebumps and made me teary, and I know Spellstone and its range of eclectic characters will stay with me for a while. In his stories, Montgomery doesn't hold back from showing the harshness of the world, which makes the emphasis on kindness and goodness even more impactful.

Another thing that I loved about the book was the pace and how it didn't take long for the story to get interesting or exciting. Children (and adults!) can lack stamina when reading and so books that are engaging from the first couple of chapters are often likely to be the books that the children stick with and not swap after a few days. As I said earlier, I challenge anyone to read this opening chapter and not be hooked!

I know exactly how popular this book is going to be with pupils current and past and I can't wait to share it with them. Thank you to Walker Books and Netgalley for allowing me to read this is advance in exchange for an honest review. Honestly, this is exceptional and Ross Montgomery is a flawless writer.

Evie is an ordinary 12 year old girl trying to find her place in the world. The only problem is that she seems to be becoming less and less important to those around her; her friends forget about her, even her parents aren’t taking as much notice of her as they used to. Just as she is despairing of ever finding ‘her people’ she meets the enigmatic Wainwright who tells her a tale of.magic, and good versus evil. But then, what Evie thought was just an entertaining story, turns out to be more real than she thought, and Evie is about to play the lead character in the story’s dramatic conclusion.
This is a delicious blend of myth, legend and religious allegory, all combining to create a wonderful MG fantasy.
Compelling writing and vivid character and world-building, as we’ve come to expect from Ross MacKenzie, makes this a pacy, gripping read that is difficult to put down.
The allusions to Arthurian legend through Emrys, the possible comparison of Spellstone to Pandora’s box, and the Emrys/Vale identifying with the religious figures of Christian tradition, all serve to spark some interesting discussions.
This should be in all schools and libraries that cater for 8-13 year old readers.
Thank you to Netgalley, Ross MacKenzie and Walker books for this eARC.

Ross Montgomery is easily one of my favourite children's authors, so I was very excited to finally read this third book, which once again is filled to the brim with magic. For me, it encompasses everything that you could possibly want from a Middle Grade adventure, and more. As with his other books, this can so easily be enjoyed by readers of all ages, which is always an impressive achievement.

It's so hard to write reviews for books that are this good, because I feel words just don't do it justice. Instead I will just urge you to give this (and the other two books in the 'sort-of' trilogy) a read, I really don't think you'll regret it.

A good, fast-paced adventure into a world of hidden magic and odd magical talents.
I liked that, although there was a depth to this magical world, it wasn't depicated as too complex (i've read a few books recently that try to pack a far too complicated world into a short book, losing a lot of what could have been).
I like Evie as a main character, and the fact that she wasn't initally willing to be dragged into this strange world that was suddenly presented to her by complete strangers. But soon she realises that she kind of has to join it.
The secondary characters were all loveable and had their own charm. I liked that there was little sections of the books dedicated to each character, where Evie went on a little adventure with them and their magic, which allowed you to learn a bit more about them, their backstory and their character, without it seeming unnatural or forced. It also meant that none of them fell to the sidelines (As so often books with multiple characters dont give enough time to a character, and sometimes you kind of wonder what the point in them was, but this isn't the case here at all). this all worked into the story, as Evie realises she needs all of them and their talents to help her defeat Vale.
I also had a moment of sympathy for Vale. I dont want to spoil the ending, but there was a moment near the end where he said something about humanity that made me think 'you're not entirely wrong'.
so overall, this was a really enjoyable book and i recommend giving it a read!

Spellstone by Ross Montgomery is a wonderful book that takes readers on an exciting adventure. It's a story filled with magic, friendship, and discovering the extraordinary within ourselves.

One of the best things about Spellstone is the magical element. Montgomery's description of the magic in the story makes it feel real and enchanting. It's like stepping into a whole new world where spells come to life and amazing things happen.

But Spellstone is more than just a magical adventure. It has some important messages too. It shows us that we all have something special inside us, like a little bit of magic or positive energy. It also reminds us to look for the good in people and be kind to one another.

I think kids who are 10 years old and older will really like this book. If you're a fan of Harry Potter, you'll probably enjoy Spellstone too. The characters are interesting and you'll feel like you're part of their magical adventure.

The ending of Spellstone leaves room for more to come. It feels like there might be another book in the future, and that's something to look forward to. I'm excited to see what happens next and discover more secrets from this magical world.

Spellstone is a wonderful, magical adventure that sparks your imagination. It's all about magic, friendship, and finding the extraordinary within ourselves.

Ross Montgomery is now on my list of "must-read" authors. I loved the Midnight Guardians and as soon as I finished Spellstone I ordered a copy of The Chime Seekers!

I was recently lucky enough to have Ross Montgomery visit the school where I work. Ross was amazing with the children and was really inspiring, so I was really excited to see this title pop up on Netgalley. This book did not disappoint. From the very first page where he describes a theatre where the audience all sleep in the rain I was gripped (especially by the character who was asleep with their head back and mouth open filling with rainwater - how could they still be alive?!?). I started reading this on World Book Day during our drop everything and read session and I wanted to keep interrupting the children's own reading to read sections of the book to them. I think it will make a great read-a-loud book. I loved that the characters were so diverse but it wasn't made into a big deal, that's just how they were. It is a great story that's really about trying to see the good in people and not just the damage that humanity does, which is definitely something I have to remember from time to time. I would recommend this to anyone who teaches Upper KeyStage 2 and above and who loves a bit of real world mixed with magic. It was a great read!

Ross Montgomery writes brilliant stories that contain a touch of magic and fantasy and this is a great new addition to the bookshelves.

Evie feels invisible in her day to day life so when she is recruited into the mysterious Order of the Stone by a man called Wainwright who then vanishes, she finds herself part of a secret society trying to save the world. The threat created by the villian Vale and his 'smoke-men' was geninuely scary and you did feel like the order were in danger at all times. They didn't immediately take to Evie (either as a member of their society or as their leader) and so it was a dramatic read to see if she could win them all over and work out how to save the world.

The magic was brilliantly created - it's a great balance of being a fantasy world based on our own so you can picture what is going on without the world itself being to complicated. The magic too is simple but powerful, with lots of dramatic moments and peril.

A great read with characters who are different to your usual middle grade heroes - these were very much unsung heroes showing bravery comes in all forms.

Used to being un-noticed - to the point of feeling invisible at times - Evie is surprised when the enigmatic Wainwright recruits her into a secret magical organisation. Evie discovers all at once that magic exists, that she has magical powers (btu she doesn't know what they are) and that these powers are needed to save the world from the most dangerous magician ever. Can she really do it?

Spellstone has got all the elements of the perfect magical adventure: unknow powers waiting be revealed, a talking cat, a small boat which is really the most extravagant mansion, and of course danger! Good vs Evil, a battle that rages into every one of us. Evie is a very attaching character and the reader really gets behind what she has to face and how much she needs to see her family again...! But I won't say more, only that it's a story that needs to be read!

What a magical adventure story that kids and adults will love! Evie is a wonderful character who starts the story feeling unseen, misunderstood, and generally on the outside of things. Until she meets the members of the Order of the Stone, a group of magicians sworn to guard the Spellstone.

This is more than the classical fight of good against evil. This is a story of friendship, family, of growing up, of finding yourself. Children will love the characters, and probably relate to some of them, and the action is non-stop as Evie and her new friends race to save the world.

An excellent read I highly recommend.

4.25 stars. Ross delivers another one of his staples - adventure, magic, good vs. evil. I love that he writes stand-alones that are fresh and "their own", he does not steal from himself. His storytelling style is very balanced and makes you easily fall in love with the characters and the story. Although I did not love it as much as Chime Seekers or Midnight Guardians, it was still a very enjoyable read. Highly recommended.

Gosh, this was wonderful. Magic, secrets, good vs evil, understanding your own power and joining secret magic societies. Honestly everything Ross writes just enthralls me - these characters, this journey, the message just made me so happy. I loved every second of this - it’s a total page-turner.

I listened to this as an audiobook and loved the story! The narrator did an amazing job voicing the characters of different backgrounds as well. The ending seemed sort of open, so I'm hoping for sequels! Thank you for the experience.

Twelve-year-old Evie has had the strangest dream. She was performing magic in a theatre where everyone was asleep except for the five people (well people and a cat) who were at the front, oh and it was raining indoors. This wasn’t the only strange thing to happen to her though. It would seem that no one notices her anymore. People walk into her, teachers don’t notice her, and even her parents forget about the things she tells them.

One day whilst returning home from school she is injured by a cyclist and given help by a man sitting on a bench, however, this isn’t any ordinary man, this is one of the people from her dream. What’s more, he is being hunted and needs her to keep something safe and tells her that Alinora will find her.

This is the start of a great and frightening adventure into the world of magic and good vs evil for Evie.

Author Ross Montgomery sure knows how to create an engaging, adventurous middle-grade story that children will adore. Spellstone is a truly amazing book and one that the reader will rush through given that so much occurs on each page.

The characters are likeable, well most of them, and the foreboding that fills the air as the possibility of the Earth being sent back to the dark ages makes this book a page-turner.

Overall, Spellstone is a fabulous book that is exciting and a real treat. I can see it becoming a firm favourite with its readers.

All children will love this book, who like reading about magic and a magician.
Twelve year old Evie is a special girl she has the strangest dream, that in a theatre she was doing a magical act, when inside it started raining, with a sleeping audience in the front row.
When Evie was on the way to school, she sees a black cat with one blue eye and one yellow the same one in her dream.
Evie’s day gets even stranger she recognised a man from her dream with a bright orange beard, and wearing exactly the same clothes, but who is he? The greatest magic is hidden in plain sight! I can see why this book was shortlisted for the Costa Children’s Book Awards. I highly recommend Spellstone this magical adventure to all children. I would like to thank Walker books for sending me a copy to read.

[May contain spoilers]

After reading The Midnight Guardians I realised Ross Montgomery had a special talent for writing. When he released The Chime Seekers I thought nothing could top The Midnight Guardians then he released Spellstone which I think may be his best book yet. Full of humorous quips, adventure and endearing characters, I loved every second of this book. The ending was unexpected in a good way (who knew a skyscraper could become a terrifying monster?) and I wish I hadn't raced through this book. All I can say is, I can't wait to see what Ross Montgomery releases next.

This book got me hooked right from the first page. There is magic in his writing. It is a story about a girl who is not getting noticed as much as she used to, her encounter with Wainwright and how she came to realise that the story told by Wainwright might be more than just a story. It reminds me of a movie about a boy getting hold of the Excalibur and then being sucked into a fight against Morgana.

I love this book and will try and use it as a core-text.

An ordinary girl finding herself in extraordinary circumstances. A rich catalogue of characters, and array of wizards and magicians. And a sequence of thrilling events that make our mundane everyday world seem like it might be a lot more weird than we realise. This is exactly the sort of book I would have wanted to read when I was a kid, and it’s so good to see this kind of story out on the shelves today. Awesome cover, too.

Evie feels that no one notices her any more, including her parents. She meets a man called Wainwright to tells her that she is a sorcerer with an important quest to rid the earth of evil that is trapped inside a stone. With the help of the 4 remaining magicians in the order of the stone she completes her quest.

Enjoyed this book very much.

I liked how the MC is pulled into the magical world and how that comes in a full circle.

I think I would’ve preferred to stay with her throughout rather than jump into other points of view, but it didn’t spoil the book.

I thought the idea of us having our memories of magic erased to save humanity was a very clever idea.
