The Spotted Cottage #5

A Spot of Summer

Rate this book
A famous actress, a divorcé, and a popstar walk into a (sand)bar…

All Mia Westwood was looking for on San Juan Island was a relaxing place to await the release of her latest film. Instead, she found friendship with a popstar, a perplexing mystery, and romantic feelings for a newly divorced island native who is not ready for a relationship. Seems like a story only Hollywood could’ve scripted, right? If only…

Jacob Kowalski just wanted peace and quiet after his devastating divorce. But how was he supposed to get that when a beautiful, headstrong woman with big city connections kept inserting herself into a high profile investigation…and his every waking thought?

It’s not long before Mia and Jacob’s attraction grows into something much more complicated—especially since Mia’s only in town for a short time and Jacob’s roots are firmly planted on the island. But when all is said and done, can they turn their summer romance into a happily ever after?

A Spot of Summer, book 5 in the Spotted Cottage series, is a contemporary women’s fiction novel with plenty of sweet romance, small-town charm, and a delightful cozy mystery. Get your copy now, and welcome to the island!

A Spot of Summer is another visit with our friends on San Juan Island.  Mia is anxious about her new movie with her mother coming out.  When Mia decides to go hiking she meets Baily Jo that is a famous singer.  They become fast friends.  When Mia finds out that Baily Jo is in trouble she wants to help.  She had placed her money in a money management company that now was having her sued for insider trading.  Mia is determined to help Baily Jo.  And she needs the help of Jacob that has come home to get over his divorce.  Jacob is nice and Annie and his step mom keeps telling him making friends with Mia and Baily Jo would not hurt.  He is a IT guy that works with the cloud.  He so happens to work with the company that is suing Baily Jo.  Mia’s idea is to get in with the guy running the company as she is an actress and to find out if it is a legit investment company or a Ponzi scheme.  The company’s owner will not talk to Mia but he fires Jacob.  Jacob is hired by another cloud company that needs their older files transferred to their new system and there has been no one able to do it.  Jacob finds out something no one else knew about the system.

Since Jacob left the island to work out of country, when he gets a message from his friend Annie from school that she needs help, he leaves to return to San Juan Island.  He thinks helping her out with her twins and being with his family will help him heal from his divorce.  Annie’s husband Roy just up and left them and she is trying to raise the two precious children that don’t sleep during the night and they have been sick off and on since they started daycare.  And of course eventually she and Roy gets sick too.  He starts blaming them for causing him to be sick so much and being threatened about possibly being fired by his job.   He moves out leaving Annie alone with twins under a year old.  She is also missing work having to take care of the kids even when she is sick.  Eventually they all get well and it is just the fact that two babies are hard to handle alone on little sleep.  Jacob helps her out and takes them to and from their daycare.  Annie is pushing Jacob to date Mia.  She thinks she would be a great girl for him.  Sometimes when you see someone through another person’s eyes, it can make you take a harder look yourself.

Mia Westwood is on San Juan Island visiting her father and trying to keep a low profile until her movie premiers but life on the island has other plans. Mia soon finds herself embroiled in an investigation with a friend and starts spending time with Jacob Kowalski, the islands very eligible bachelor. Before long Mia begins to question her career and life plans.

I have enjoyed the Spotted Cottage series and loved Mia and Jacobs story. The characters were so easy to like and the mystery added a nice touch to the book. It was also fun to visit the characters from the previous books. My thanks to Amelia Addler for my advanced copy which I voluntarily read and reviewed. A fun read with loveable characters makes this an easy five stars.

In A Spot of Summer, Mia is on San Juan Island after finishing a film. She feels unfulfilled as an actress. While on the island, Mia becomes friends with a pop star, and spends time with Jacob, who expects she will soon be gone. I love this small island community, the ongoing arc with Lottie the Orca, catching up with previous characters and more. When Mia inquires about an investment, someone starts targeting her. Mia is determined to figure out what is happening and Jacob becomes her reluctant assistant. There is a spectacular conclusion to that mystery. Every time another book in this series becomes available, I set aside a day to just sit and read it because they are just that good!

This is my voluntary review of a copy I was given.

Both of Mia's parents are actors, and she's insecure about her ability to follow in their footsteps, although it's really only her mom forcing the issue.
Jacob is also insecure. He's a nobody who couldn't even keep his wife. What could the beauty see in him?

Of course everyone is playing matchmaker.

It really was a great story. Their romance had the angst of their doubt, but there was a “bad guy” in their midst, too. That was a fun storyline, too.

I really enjoyed this one!

Mia is in town just to relax after her latest film. Jacob is firmly settled in the town and very cautious about becoming involved with Mia because he doesn’t expect her to stay long. But Mia is not as excited about being an actress as her mother is. Read the book to find out what happens.
