Welcome to The Corpse Whisperer, where financially challenged zombie hunter Allie Nighthawk returns to her hometown of Cincinnati and finds herself knee-deep in murder, mayhem, and zombies. Can she solve not one but two murders, and get away unscathed — when the good guys might not be so good, and a presence from her past returns for revenge?
I’m actually pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I’ve read so many terrible books lately and the zombie hunter genre can be so hit or miss. This one was a hit.
I love the FMC, even if she has more attitude than is good for her. I love Harry too.
No spoilers, but I actually cried at one point, that’s how invested I was.
I have two minor criticisms. 1. It felt a tad rushed, the book as a whole, but not so rushed as to deprive the reader of information and character interaction. 2. Is this more paranormal than just zombies? Will we get an explanation for Little Allie and the intruder? It doesn’t feel like we’re in a typical paranormal world, where witches, shifters, vamps, fae etc. are all around. Just zombies, so…what’s up with the voices in her head?
Other than those two things, I really enjoyed this and am looking forward to book 2.
This concept is good but tired. I can think of 3 other books that use it better off the top of my head. Amelia Blake is one if the series hadn't gone x rated. The world building is unbelievable. 80s detective story with zombies that, in my well read opinion, are by description actually ghouls. A raised dead by a person with a power to do so will also have the ability to lay them back to rest without violence. The idea here to be able to raise the dead then be required to put them down like a zombie is ridiculous. She gets a new job and it immediately feels like she's had it years. Mostly it was all cheesy. The mystery resolution was obvious.
I really enjoyed this opening to the Corpse Whisperer series. There’s enough world building and character development to make it interesting but not so much that there’s nothing else to develop in future books. Nighthawk is crass and disrespectful to authority but that works in this book. I did figure out the bad guy pretty early on but the book moved forward enough that it was still enjoyable.
