Another great allegorical tale for families, about the boy born with cat ears and a tail. This time, Toby's adventures take him on the journey to forgiveness, with lots of danger and excitement along the way. Again, I fell in love with Toby, his friend Mia, and the grambles who raised him. Again, I loved reading between the lines, seeing the serious truths behind the entertaining story line.
It surprised me a bit, though. See, I have this thing about series: the second book is often not as good as the first. However, if anything, the further adventures of Toby are even better than the original adventures, and I'm left hoping for a third book to the series.
This book is the second in a Christian SciFi series. I would call it midgrade because it is a little too intense in places for truly young children, but the tone and subject matter are fitting for tweens as well as teens.
In the first book (which you can purchase on Amazon here) Toby, a young boy created in a test tube with cat DNA spliced into his own, leaves his underground shelter to search for answers in a post apocalyptic world. On the way he questions whether he has a soul and discovers that he has a Creator.
In book two, Toby is sent on a new journey, when a strange object falls from the sky and his Creator tells him to investigate. He finds strange and frightening new groups of people, answers to questions left unresolved in the last book, and an important lesson on forgiveness.
While both books in this series are good, this book is slightly less allegorical and more direct in its story. While Toby's first quest was philosophical (a search for meaning), in book two he has a clear goal (find the falling object). While the lessons are still there, this concrete purpose does lead to a quicker, tighter pace which will definitely hold young people's attention.
This is a series that could grow up with the reader. There are some scenes of violence (not graphic, but perhaps too intense for the youngest of readers) similarly to the first book, but overall it is a good clean read with an important message.
More or less for a younger audience, this was nonetheless entertaining. It’s a clean, futuristic, dystopian story of a creature who is part cat, part human, maybe? Created in a test tube.
Toby is sweet with innate abilities to get in and out of predicaments. He also hears God and obeys without much hesitation, no matter what he’s asked to do. He also obeys even though the scientist doctor he lives with doesn’t believe in God. He knows no matter what God asks him to do will work out for the best. If only we could be the same.
At this time a catastrophe has killed most of the population of earth. It seems that many of earth's population left, aside from the few that live in their own compound under the earth where Toby lives, are destructive, greedy, and have a bizarre religion of nature gods.
Although this is really for youth, I wouldn’t mind reading more of these short stories.
Above ground for two years, Toby, the boy created by scientists and given the ears of a rabbit—and other strange accouterments—sees a light fall from the sky. Curious, Toby goes in search of the source of the light, but there is someone else seeking it; someone who will go to any lengths to obtain the power the light represents. The Further Adventures of Toby the Trilby by Angela Castillo is the second book in the adventures of the strange little boy who wonders about the existence of his own soul, and in his quest, answers that question for many others. Beautiful descriptions and engaging situations make this a perfect book for young teens, or even younger readers; providing wonderful life lessons without preaching or overtly instructing. Toby is an endearing and engaging character that even adults will identify with.
Two years have passed since his last adventure when the Voice of God calls on Toby once again to go and help others. The pages practically turned themselves as I wanted to find out how Toby handled new dangers in the post-apocalyptic world. Young readers will identify with Toby as he struggles with the concepts of bravery and forgiveness when there is little incentive to do so. Due to some more mature themes, parents may want to read along with their child. Great, fast-paced read.
The second book about Toby is also exciting. The adventures are incredible. We have met some new interesting characters. There is only one next book about Toby and it makes me sad because I would like to know much more about all of the personages. I'm sure, three books are not enough. I want to thank Angela C. Castillo for such a sincere book.

Toby and Mia struggle with the issue of forgiveness in this adventure story that takes an unexpected but super-exciting direction. My 12-yr-old and I just love this series!
