This is book three in the eight-part Terraway series, with characters based in Filipino folklore.
After days spent locked in King Geon's dungeon, October's afraid her sanity has reached the point of no return. With one of her Reapers deranged beyond reason, and the other permanently altered, October isn't sure how she'll be able to keep up with the famine that's run rampant throughout Terraway. With too many souls to reap, October's body starts to break down as she struggles to redeem the world that seems set on her destruction.
USA Today bestselling author Mary E. Twomey lives in Michigan with her three adorable children. She enjoys reading, writing, vegetarian cooking, and telling her children fantastic stories about wombats.
While she loves writing fantasy, dystopian, and paranormal tales for her readers, Mary also writes romance under the name Tuesday Embers.
This was intense and would have had an even bigger impact if the author didn't like to put on the internal drama a bit too thick! Yes, the Omen, or the Soul ripper as I think of her, and the werewolf and half vampire who help her rip the souls of dying humans, are having some angsty relationship drama. Believe it or not, the Omen, October, has managed to stay a virgin so far at the "advanced" age of something between 22-24 years old. Her two "friends" with cuddling privileges are having a hard time separating the job from their complicated feelings for her and things are getting murky. Add to all of that an over protective brother, a would be stepfather with dubious loyalties, a fish dude with a chip on his shoulder, and a mentally ill crap-hording mother, and you have a trailer-trash drama with Paranormal overtones. Yes, it is just as entertaining as it sounds. My issue is not with the story or the writing, which is pretty good, by the way. It is with the somewhat repetitious angst in the main character's internal monologue and motivation. We get a LOT of the panic of OCD inflicted personality, which is great, but less could be more in this case. Just saying. I am jumping right into the next book - I have to know what happens with all the drama, after all 😃😆👍
I have read 3 books in as many days and can I say I LOVE the characters in these books.
October - funny, sassy, nerdy and a slight nut job. thrown into a completely new world filled with monsters who all want a piece of her, her stubborn reactions to her new life is perfect.
Von - yup every paranormal series needs a sexy AF brooding vampire - what makes Von so good - if he drinks human blood and fully transitions to vampire he will be a rabid monster. So Von resists temptation at all cost - continutes to brood and drop flirtatious actions like it is his only purpose in life.
Mason - the surprise third wheel in what should have been a twosome. I love the complications he throws into the October/Von relationship. Oh wait he is a shapeshifter - too funny why are the love triangles always human/vamp/shifter - oh well it works well
The large supporting cast in the series are only getting stronger - as is the plight of October and Terraway.
Having read a few of these Goodread series I am used to the nature these books take - you will want to keep reading all 8 books because in essence it is 1 book in 8 parts. It makes it hard to put them down - particularly when october has a talent for getting herself kidnapped.
I received a free ARC in exchange for an honest review. The saga of October and her Reapers continues in this third Terraway book. I like how complicated the characters are. So far none of them have been predictable, which is a new concept in YA fiction. I've enjoyed being surprised at each new thing that they do. I feel like it is more how real people would act in complex and difficult situations, especially since those situations are not "real" in the true sense of the word. Your two best friends wouldn't be a vampire and a shape-shifting wolf and not have crazy nuances of personality. I love it. Looking forward to the next books in the series.
This story is fast becoming one of my favorites and October Grace is fast becoming one of the best kick-butt, sassy heroine that I can't get enough of. I am completely engrossed in the drama and never know what will happen next. The more I learn about the major players in this narrative, the more I realize just how complex their lives have become. Everyone has lots and lots of garbage from their past that they have to deal with daily and still try to function as normal people. I can't help but admire how well October, Von, and Mason still work together after everything they have had to live through. I Just love this story!!!!! Great Characters and a Very Imaginative Adventure!!!!!
I couldn't get enough of this series!!! Just finished binge reading all 9.
The story was so captivating and the characters were people you honestly felt connected to. It's not often that you really get sucked in the world an author creates like I did for Terraway.
I think my favorite thing about the whole series is that you never know what is going to come around the corner. Surprises left and right. You think you know which way the story is headed and it veers off.
Assholes, assholes everywhere! I think there must be some kind of a shining beacon from October's forehead saying 'terribly in need of a company of dumbasses and jerks and assholes' or something. Ack, I really, really love the series and October and the familiarity of my mother tongue and Filipino folklore/myths...but if only all the men in the series can cut down the assholery and dumbassery. October is mighty resilient for all the things they've done to her.
There was so much douchebagery in this book! Ugh! And what crawled up vons ass? Him going that deep into the fight with October was a little overboard whether he's in love with her or not. And what is going on with bev? Did whatever caused her to be an asshole October's whole life crawl out of her and into von? There was so much in this! I ate it all up though douchebagery and assholes a plenty! I am curious how October running away to Terraway with finn is going to go.

Definitely continue reading if you’re on the fence. While this book is 5 out of 5, the series overall is a 4 out of 5. And it’s a tearjerker so grab some tissues and continue on, however in my opinion the ending is trash so be prepared for that. (Its not as bad as I make it sound but I hated it) Read my review of the final book if you’re curious.
Book 3. And I won't lie. It is aptly named. October goes through torture in this book. And not just her. They all do. I cried so much. But the story is progressing so well and I am so glad book 4 is out, because I am hooked on this series.
So at this point I’m a little irritated with everyone. The whole “I’m going to use you thing” they got going on is just tiring. And it seems October is first in line for that. Danny and Ezra want her to help with the reaping to Mariang can live longer. Danny, definitely more than anyone else. He basically risks her life at the opportunity to find out how far they could push her. Because if she could reap more the less work Mariang would have to do.
Mason was using her to see his dead wife. And basically traumatized her when he realized he couldn’t anymore. Then sulks and try to work back into her good graces so he can have that companionship. So I’m over Mason. Was kind of over him from jump. I see why Danny and him are best friends. Both of them are booty holes.
And then of course the council just wants the souls reaped and the segrado stone put dispersed amongst all the lands. But you know October and Mariang have to restore balance by saving up souls. And the like. Terraways rulers and dwuende all seem to be made up of a bunch spoiled, bratty, users. Like every other scene someone is having a fit for something or another.
Now, October is truly showing her age and it’s getting frustrating. It’s like she can be reckless with her actions and words but if you are she becomes this delicate little flower that needs reassurance. I understand she’s trauma and OCD but it’s like girl open them eyes. Von might actually be the only that truly cares about her but she’s convinced herself that he can only be a friend when it’s clear to everyone but her he loves. Truly loves her. And she keeps making sure he knows he’s not her boyfriend just her friend. I can’t the blame him for finally just being like I’m done. And I know my place. Like Danny, his own brother, Sh*ts on him all the time but never even learned the full story for what happened. And instead rags on him constantly. Danny is like a self righteous your gonna do your job because it benefits me but I don’t owe you nothing but the ish on the bottom of my shoe type ahole.
Now, Bev. She did a whole 360 at the end of book 3 and I’m thinking it’s because of the Segrado stone. I think some kind spell was put on it to make her keep it and as a result she became a hoarder. Protective of it all. Her treasures. Now that it is gone she can think clearly. Come out of the fog she was in. Hopefully she will be better for it.
Man this series yanks my chain all the time. I have no clue where the book or series is going. I have no idea what to expect and I can never predict what the characters are going to do. But not a lot has happened on the front of progress with October’s job.
There’s a ton of betrayals in this book and I just don’t know how October gets past it. And when she does get past it she still gets hurt. Everyone seems to hurt her, physically or emotionally somehow. Even when they don’t intend to.
I’m baffled and pissed by Mason’s behavior.
I’m suspicious that “Philip” is really Sama just based on the clues and hints that have been dropped. Hopefully he isn’t as bad as they say he is, but I’m suspecting he will be. Which sucks. I need someone in October’s corner. I need to see her get a win.
I was loving Von and now...now we have a cliffhanger ending with October running off. I don’t think this is going to be good, but I am also wondering when October will find someone who loves her for her. Who is that person? Or will it be multiple persons?
A lot of adventuring happens here, and a lot of trauma but not enough of it is addressed or fixed for me to feel satisfied. I also don’t understand everyone’s hurry, like I totes get people are starving and that’s terrible but October is one person. Like why do they continue to expect her to work herself like this?
Nearly made it to the end of this book before it went off the rails. At 97% there’s a twist and all the characters start acting stupid. None of them are mature enough to stop and think something is wrong, even considering all the otherworldly things that they’re involved in. So basically, this drama is contrived. It’s being manufactured out of nothing so that the author has another novel to write. The plot still isn’t moving anywhere any time soon. I suspect this 9 book series could be 3 books if actually shrunken down into a real plot line in each novel. Now I’m angry to the point of throwing things. This means the author is going on my DNR list.
In this installment, October is starting to feel out her relationships with the others. She is also beginning to suspect that there is more to Phillip than she originally thought. She remains amazingly short sighted and pessimistic throughout, but has more fleeting moments of hope than before.
The book starts out with the torture of October in Terraway. After she is freed through the efforts of the council, she returns Topside to recover, with her equally tortured Von and Mason. Throughout the whole book we are shown the aftermath of October’s trip to Terraway and the impact of isolation and starvation on her psyche.
The relationship she has with those around her seem very shaky in this book. They seem to teeter between growing close or being blasted further apart. Of course it doesn’t help that both Mason and Von were also tortured and that they weren’t the most stable of souls to start off with. These shaky relationships dredge up some difficult feelings from the past as well as the present and October’s emotions are hit hard. Being stuck for the rest of her life, with her two Reapers, makes it hard to find an even keel when they upset her.
It also doesn’t help that October is being visited in her dreams by a beautiful man who seems to be more than a figment of her imagination, if only she could recognise it.
Book Review of: “Torture” A Terraway Novel, Book 3 By; Mary E. Twomey
“Von tangled his fingers through mine under the water, studying how our hands looked when they were so entwined. ‘You’re more than just the job to me. You’re like my best girlfriend. Like a sister of something.’ I chuckled…’I’ll take the best girlfriend label, if it’s all the same to you.’ ‘Works for me’…’Von?’ ‘November?’ I waited until the water stopped moving to eke out the words I’d know for a while to be true. ‘You’re my best friend too.”
Resuming the Terraway series with Book 3 “Torture” Ms. Mary E. Twomey’s masterful usage of prose endures! This mood was darker yet applicable to the tale and the pace was swift, full of excitement and wonders. I will not reveal ANY spoilers, Beautiful Bookworm for I wish for you to enjoy the journey of October Grace and her Terraway patriots. This is my third novel by the author and I was not disenchanted!
I gave this book five (5) stars as I CONTINUE to be a DEAR Devotee of this series and I intensely counsel you, Really Wonderful Reader, to discover why – Please add this book to your library. Voluntary review of advance reader copy; I was given a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher.
This is one of my favorite series. I just love how the author continues to grow the characters and keep the surprises coming.
October Grace, Mason and Von have had their relationship radically changed. They are all a mess after their imprisonment and struggle to find their way back. October is so fiercely loyal and pushes herself way too hard to help others. I really love reading more about her. While she can better tolerate the touch of others she still struggles with making emotional connections. You can't blame her considering her childhood and the way Mason treated her. I am so eager after each book for the next one.
I couldn't help but get attached to October. Can't help but feel what she feels. There were so many times I was at the edge of my seat with my heart pleading with October yet she continues to stay steadfast with her choices. Continues to distance herself. And push out those who truly do care about her. I am definitely emotionally invested in this series. And the hopeless trials October and her gang have to go through. We all know by now that October can be her own worst enemy but hurt may cause one of her closest allies to turn on her. Working as the catalyst of an avalanche of poor choices.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review. The way the last book ended I was really looking forward to the next book and what would happen to the characters. I wasn't disappointed this book kept up late I kept saying one more chapter. I loved getting to know the characters Von and Mason and October Grace I'm really looking forward to the next book !
This one may be my favorite in the series so far. Although, the fight with Von at the end was painful. I'm loving the addition of Finn as a main character, he livens the story up a bit. Can't wait to read the next one!
