Writing has me hooked though the realization was a long time coming. As a child I wanted to be a foreign correspondent when I grew up. I must have been a romantic even then, but reality set in and instead I went to the exotic University of Rhode Island for a degree in English literature and stayed on as a teaching assistant while I earned my master’s degree.
In the meantime, I had married John (he loves it when I give my heroes his name), and we have two grown children, Mary Lee and Chris, and three granddaughters, Amy, Laura and Carolyn.
Following URI and a stint writing PR and advertising copy, I taught writing and lit for sixteen years at Becker College in Worcester, Massachusetts. I enjoyed this period of my life tremendously, but when I think back, I realize that always simmering on the back burner of my brain was the old adage, “Those who can do; those who can’t teach.”
Not necessarily true, but after I raised my children, left Becker and moved to Florida with Big John, the gig was up. I began to write, and write, and write, and, well, you get the picture . . . .
My debut novel tells the tale of the captivating, defiant Grace O’Malley, THE BAREFOOT QUEEN, who risks everything she loves for a vow she holds dearer than life itself.

A year after her husband’s death, interior designer Deva Dunne is trying to get her life back on track. The adjustment is difficult, but she’s doing her best. Deva leaves her home in Boston and moves to Florida. After her husband was killed in a car accident, thanks to icy roads, Deva wants nothing more to do with winter. Florida is the perfect answer…or so she thought.

Deva moves into an apartment complex which is about to be turned into condos. She’s hired to renovate the apartments. Her neighbor, Treasure, wants her place to be like a movie studio. As Deva becomes involved in the project, she is faced with a scene that’s right out of a horror movie. Treasure is strangled and left for dead in her bathtub.

Of course the police consider Deva a prime suspect. She can’t believe they suspect her since she hardly even knew Treasure, let alone have a reason to kill her. Intent on clearing her name, Deva throws herself into the middle of the investigation much to the dismay of the lead detective, Rossi. Deva is determined to find the killer before anyone else is hurt.

This is a quick, light read. The characters are fun, some are evil, and some are just plain wacky. Add that to a plot that keeps you guessing until the end and you have everything you need for a captivating cozy mystery. There’s even some romantic tension thrown in between Deva and two possible love interests. This is the first book of the series and I’ll definitely be reading the second book, The Monet Murders A great start to a fun series!

Some well-worn clichés dot Designed for Death by Jean Harrington, but so does a well-knitted plot that delves deeper than most cozies into the character of its protagonist, Deva Dunne. I openly admit I like a bit more meat to my mysteries, but I do like a nice cozy once in a while so I can stop having nightmares, smile a bit, and watch in amazement how mysterious our lives must seem to those who don't know us well.

When Deva finds the murdered body of a new tenant at her condo unit in Naples, Florida, all the secrets about her neighbors come pouring out as well as the obligatory dropping of hints about the murder along with the foreshadowing of the approaching hurricane. Hey, it's Florida! It's going to have one. I admit upfront, the author did fool me for 83% of the book about who the murderer was. That's good. I like an author who can slap me across the cheeks with red herrings without the plot smelling like rotting fish. The usual 'I can't believe she's going to do that' moments in the story happened, but that's how cozy mysteries move the plot. The lead character is Lucille (Lucy) Esmeralda McGillicuddy Ricardo nosy, even when she doesn't intend to be.

I like the fact that the various quirky characters had some real life problems, financial issues, and personal struggles that made them seem a bit more human. But I don't by some of the physical characterizations. They were hard to accept or visualize at times. The author has even set us up for a series, which looks like a winner. This is a high-end "4"; cozy aficionados might even give it a high "5".

After her husband's sudden death, Deva moved to Florida to escape her sorrow. An interior designer by trade, she accepts a job redecorating one of her neighbors apartments, but when her neighbor turns up dead Deva jumps in and starts investigating.

Designed for Death is a cute and quirky Southern mystery. The apartments where she lives are populated with likeable women and men who are eager to get into Deva's pants. That aspect got a little tired but for the most part this was a tidy little murder mystery.

Deva can’t help but be flattered by all the male attention—that is, until she realizes the killer has designs on her, too…

There are many things that determine how I judge a book including characters, emotion, writing, overall design, creativity within the novel…those all make up pieces of my book blogging puzzle.

From the beginning of this book, I fell in love with several characters. Deva is mourning the death of her husband and moved to Florida to get as far away from her previous life as possible. She has a knack for design and uses it to help her forget. Don’t we all do that from time to time? Get so into our work or a hobby that it helps us cope with hard feelings? But there are several characters in Deva’s life that help her feel a breath of fresh air. Although she is not there long, Treasure is a ray of trasnvestite hope, along with her former lover. Then there are multiple men in this book who are swoon-worthy, from the soon-to-be divorced upstairs neighbor to the Hawaiin shirt wearing investigator.

The mystery in this book kept me turning the pages. I also have a hunch at some point as to who the killer is in books like these, but most of the time, the real suspect is merely a glimmer that doesn’t last long. That happened here. I thought I knew, then clues turned me in a different direction, but the I was back to where I started. The motive for the murder is what held me up. Definitely not what I thought it was going to be. Dang motives, tripping up my detective game.

This book was filled with emotion. The pain that Deva has for the loss of her husband is heart breaking. Any married woman, or any woman in love can relate with how they would feel in this scenario. What would I do in this situation? Where would I go? Would I be able to work? Although this book was a murder mystery, with drama and suspense, it also was thought provoking. And there were also the nuggets of funny, that showed hope and brought out a part of Deva you hoped she wouldn’t lose in all her sadness.

Good news, I felt like I grew close to Deva and want to see her grow and move forward, and also want to see which of her many suitors she chooses as her next love interest, and I think I’m going to have the chance to do that. On Jean Harrington’s website, it says this is the first in a series. Woo!

Review: Designed for Death by Jean Harrington
5 STARS
Well I kept guessing the whole book who the murder was and till the end was not sure at all.Designed for Death keeps you in suspense to the end. I look forward to reading more of Jean Harrington work. I hope their are more books with Deva Dunne.
Deva Dunne has moved down to Florida to get away from her old life. Her husband's death was hard on her. So she bought a condo and she has not worked for awhile until helping Dick the owner of her condo's was redoing them and she did not like his taste so offered to help. Dick sent her Treasure. Treasure stopped by her condo and asked her for help with her condo. Deva was excited to get back to designing and helped get the condo done all in white like Treasure wanted. Deva was into the condo the day before Treasure was to move into it for a final check and saw blood on carpet. She followed and found Treasure naked in the tub dead.
Everyone in the condo complex was a suspect. Treasure's neighbor next door Simon was just coming back when he heard Deva scream, Simon is a tax lawyer and going through a divorce.
Dick the complex owner strapped for money but getting the condos fixed up to sale. He is married to Marilyn.
AudreyAnn and Chip are living together in one condo. AudreyAnn is a Pilates instructor. Chip is a retired chef.
Neal is a golfer for a living always going out of town.
Lots of suspects and lots of action for Deva. Deva does not want to date, she is still not over her husband Jack.
Simon asks her to dinner to discuss fixing his condo up. Even lieutenant Rossi tries to take her to dinner.
I like Deva she is starting to enjoy her life and working again. She keeps finding information out and gives it to Rossi. Who is always telling her to trust no one that everyone who knew Treasure is a suspect. So Deva does not know who to trust. To top everything off their is a hurricane that is coming their way.

Wow what a fantastic read!! This little book kept me guessing right to the last chapter. This was a classic who done it with Miss Marple's place being taken by Deva, and while she doesn't try to be a detective she just cant leave the puzzle alone and that is what kept it believable for me. It wasn't a woman trying to solve a murder as much as a woman trying to get her life back in control and finding who killed Treasure was Deva trying to over come the fear finding the body instilled in her.

I have to say I found myself telling off the characters in this book a couple of times. That's when you now you are reading a good story when you talk out loud to them, either that or I am loosing my marbles. I was a little sceptical at first with this story being told in the first person, as I tend to struggle with them especially if the you swap from one person's perspective to the other. But this worked because it was just told through Deva's eyes. I will be looking out for more by this author and hope maybe to see more of Deva too, maybe see if she is on her way to Hawaii!

I really enjoyed this one. A great fun crime novel set in a part of the world I know well. A young interior designer moves to Florida to start a new life after the untimely death of her husband. Death seems to follow her about and she finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation. Determined not to become the murder's next victim, she starts making her own investigations that take her to all sorts of weird places.

I didn't guess who did it and really look forward to the next one on the series. In fact I've already bought it.

This was a light and enjoyable read. I kept thinking to myself that this reminds me of a certain series by Janet Evanovich, only not so tiresome, and the heroine definitely has more of an edge to her. But the cliches remain. Potential love triangle, attractive Italian cop, and whacky supporting characters, and just some characters that we just don't suspect.

Prompt - A book featuring an amateur detective: Main character's main occupation is an interior designer.

Devalera Dunne is a young widow from Boston that has moved to a beachfront condominium in Florida to try to start living a normal life again. Tasked with redesigning the condos by her landlord, Deva becomes fast friends with new resident Treasure - a larger than life woman that Deva can't help but like when Treasure asks her to design her new condo. After finding Treasure dead, Deva finds herself again facing the loss of someone she cared for and in more danger than she bargained for when she tries to help with the investigation.

So, perfect cozy mystery set up. Heroine MC that is so far removed from everything she knows about being a detective surrounded by a cast of colorful characters and two men that turn her head. One of those men is named Rossi, so I kept picturing Joe Mantegna from Criminal Minds. To be perfectly honest, that might have helped me enjoy the story a little more. What can I say? He's a handsome man.

Anyhoo.

Therein lies my only point of contention, though. Deva was a grieving widow one second and then jealous about a man she's just met soon-to-be ex-wife coming for a visit the next. Or wondering about the lead investigator's fiancee. And I do mean one second as it was in the exact. same. sentence. It's jarring to see her lament about never being able to love again or feel normal again...and then in the same breath wondering why one of these men isn't paying her any attention. It's also kind of annoying since she's thirty-two years old.

It was a pretty solid mystery though; full of red herrings which I liked just fine since it's cozy. I enjoyed it enough to check out the next in the series.

The first book in the Design for Murder Series and excellent beginning. The book is well thought and the personal will interest from the beginning. The description of the hurricane was outstanding and held my attention as Deva Dunne battles elements of nature. Deva has moved into a condo in Naples, Florida to recover from her husband's death. She becomes a friend of Teresa who is found MURDER in her redecorated condo. Her blood is a sharp contrast against the snow white interior that did Deva for her. Lieutenant Rossi warms her to keep her doors lock and to trust no one. There are many twists and turns so your interested is held. The series is high on my TBR list.

Deva Dunne, a young widow from Boston, moves to Naples, Florida. She begins to make friends, and takes on a designing job for one of her neighbors, Treasure. Deva finds her new client dead in the bathtub, and realizes she is under suspicion along with other members of the apartment complex. Deva can’t leave the mystery alone, and balances budding romances between Detective Rossi and sexy neighbor, Simon Yeats while trying to discover who Treasure really was.
I like Deva, she isn’t just being nosy, she cares about the victim and strongly believes justice should be done.
I’ll read the next in the series – I want to know how the romance works out. Rossi or Yeats?

First one by this author and I think it has promise. The who dunnit was plausible and the characters have real potential. Let's hope Deva's widow status and undying love for her late husband doesn't continue to dominate her life and the storyline of future books.

Think the main character could grow up a bit. Interior decorator moves to Florida to start over after death of husband. Always angry at what some man says. Wish for more info on decorating and sw Florida

I think the author would have benefitted from speaking to actual trans people before she wrote this. While her use of pronouns was generally good, some of the dialogue between characters was a bit off.

A few factual errors, the most amusing of which was getting the words to "Amazing Grace" wrong. Note to the author: "How Great Thou Art" is an entirely different song. If you can get past those, it was a diverting little cozy.

Breezy fun but it suffered for me coming into the series mid-way. I think I could have done without that, because I already knew who was safe and could be easily ruled out.
