Castles in the Air is a stand alone romance by Felice Stevens. This book was a little different than some of Felice’s other books. It deals with the very serious topic of addiction, finally hitting rock bottom and finding a way up. These two characters both suffered and fought hard for their eventual happiness.
Logan Silver is forty four years old and is a very successful attorney. He shares a practice with his two long time best friends. Logan has never really been in a relationship. He lost his older brother when Logan was just a teenager, to addiction. He never fully recovered from it, keeping his emotions locked up.
Ryan Matson is thirty eight years old. He was a lawyer but has been disbarred. He is an addict and lost not only his job but his husband. Ryan and Logan always knew of each other, both being lawyers, and both had private crushes on each other. Right after Ryan’s divorce, a year ago, while Ryan was partying hard in a club, he ran into Logan and they shared a hot hook-up which neither has ever been able to forget. But in the year since, Ryan’s life has spiraled. Even now, he is still convincing himself that he is handling it, working as a janitor and living in a tiny, horrible apartment. When Logan runs into him, he can’t stand the thought of Ryan following in the same steps as his brother, so he takes him in to his home and tries to keep him wrapped in a bubble to protect him. Only that doesn’t work either. When bad news once again finds Ryan, he spirals even further and runs away.
Ryan had to finally decide to clean up for himself, in his own way. And he does. Meanwhile, Logan has spent every free moment searching for him. He just can’t seem to let him go. When they once again are reunited, that spark is still there but Ryan needs to put himself first, continue his work on himself before he can even think about anything with Logan. Will Logan wait for him? Or will he leave like everyone else has in Ryan’s life?
Both of these two had such a painful journey. But they both worked hard and made themselves better for it. The question is, will these new and better versions of themselves still feel the same way for each other? Can Logan truly trust Ryan to stay clean and sober on his own? This was truly a story of growth, strength, and figuring out who you were meant to be. Also of love. Of finding that one person that will love and support you through the good and bad, and to allow you to walk the path you need to travel. It was a beautiful story.

This is one of Felice Stevens' heavier books. Ryan's struggle with addiction is front and center and something he has to face before he can move forward with his life. Logan's need to save Ryan is based on his own childhood trauma, and he has to learn how to let go to have any chance of a relationship once Ryan rebuilds his own life.
This is a slow build to the romance. Ryan and Logan were acquaintances who had a one-time hookup, and when they see each other again, Ryan's life has drastically changed. Logan offers help that Ryan accepts, but things only spiral from there and it's going to be a long hard road for them to get together and find their HEA.
Ryan hits rock bottom (if you read In a New York Minute you'll remember him as Garrett's not very likable ex-husband but it's not necessary to read it in order to read this story) and has a long road ahead. I loved his strength and his ability to put his recovery first. While I sometimes thought that Logan was too pushy, I understood his need to take care of things, especially when it came to the man he wanted to be with. Logan also needed some outside help to move forward and he fought that tooth and nail.
When the men finally get that second chance at being together, they are sweet and supportive and I loved seeing them open up to each other. When Logan's hard shell cracks and he talks to Ryan about his brother it brought a tear to my eye.
If you're a regular reader of the author's books you'll recognize the men Ryan finds as a support network and found. This book is similar in tone to the Through Hell and Back series (and my beloved Ash makes a guest appearance here). It tackles a serious subject and you'll get an emotional roller coaster but all that work ends in a sweet, hard-won HEA.

Wow, this was an emotional and heartwarming story but I would expect nothing less from Felice. It's about two broken men but in different ways. Ryan has got deep scars from being kicked out by his parents when he came out at 16. It led down the path to drugs and self destruction. When he gets debarred from his job as a lawyer it only gets worse. Lawyer Logan is desperately lonely and hasn't gotten over his drug addict brother leaving years ago. Ryan and Logan once had a hot one night stand. Fast forward to the present and Ryan works in a hotel and Logan is there for a meeting. That leaves Logan offering Ryan to move in with him. Logan tries to do what he couldn't do for his brother but that leaves Ryan overwhelmed and he leaves. When Logan finally finds Ryan again there's a lot of unresolved issues between them. But there is such a strong connection between them. It takes a lot of work for both of them. It was a beautiful story that showed personal growth and determination and just a beautiful love story and was so well written.

This was a tough book to read but it was oh so good. Addiction, heartbreak, steam, found family and friends and learning how to love yourself and to be loved and in love, so many feels. Logan was something else but I loved him, Ryan took awhile for me to like and finally I loved him too. I’m glad Ryan and Logan didn’t give up on each other and took a second chance, they are so good together. It was great to read well loved and missed characters from previous books, it was nice. I’m happy for Emerson too. Oh Logan got a nice surprise meeting someone at clinic and I was ecstatic, best thing ever! GAH… Loved the book!!

Well written search for redemption romance x
Quite an unsettling story on occasion, where one of the MCs suffers from a serious addiction problem. You've got the tension of the hate-to-love relationship, the drama of the addiction, and the knowledge that overcoming addiction isn't easy, and a satisfying ending where they figure it all out, might not be guaranteed. Initially Ryan is not likeable MC, he falls into being an addict, and consequently lets people down. One of these people is Logan, it was heartbreaking reading about the affect Ryan's addiction had on Logan; his betrayal hits Logan hard. I really felt for him, he has his own problems to overcome before he can embark on the relationship he really wants with Ryan.
It really is quite a poignant tale of two men's battle to defeat their demons. Felice attempts to give an honest portrayal of their experiences, and the end result is hopeful for both. The story isn't only about the guy's struggles, it's also about the resilience of the human spirit. The ending is a positive one, with two broken souls finding love and friends to support them, and Ryan finding redemption.
"Before they walked inside, Logan put a hand on his shoulder. “I’m so in awe of what you’ve accomplished for yourself. Do you know how strong you are? I look at you and think, how am I so lucky that someone who has so much to give, chose me to share his life with?” Ryan hugged him. “I know you don’t like hearing it, but your faith in me gave me that strength. It was knowing I had your love that pushed me through the long nights. You holding me every night, telling me I could do it, made me believe it.”
I received an ARC of this story which in no way influenced my opinion. 4.5 stars.

4.5 stars. A powerful and moving story based on and around addiction and how this affected addicted characters and those trying to love them. I really enjoyed seeing the characters from the Through Hell and Back series, and it was particularly special that Esther was still going strong. Taking their relationship slowly and making certain enough healing had taken place was very admirable, especially when the physical chemistry was so very strong.

What an absolute joy this book was. It covered difficult topics such as drug and alcohol addiction, grief and mental health issues but the author handled it all with sensitivity.
When Logan Silver and Ryan Matson hook-up one night in a club, they cannot imagine the direction it would eventually take their lives. Logan realised that Ryan was pretty drunk but he could never imagine just how Ryan’s life had gone off the rails with drug and alcohol addiction.
It’s when Ryan, who had worked so hard to achieve his dream to be a lawyer, had lost everything and is at rock bottom that Logan comes back into his life, picks him up, gives him somewhere to live and pays his debts, so he is devastated when he comes home to find that Ryan has disappeared. This affects Logan badly. It affects his mental health and his job as a successful lawyer as he becomes obsessed with searching for Ryan. Logan has a secret. He lost his older brother to drugs years ago and has never really recovered, always feeling that he should have done more, which is maybe why he was so over protective of Ryan.
When Ryan reappears he doesn’t go to Logan. It’s not a saviour he needs, he needs to help himself. Logan feels used and angry when he tracks down Ryan but can they reconnect with a new understanding. The strong chemistry is still there but they need to talk and go back to the start, and undergo therapy for their deep rooted issues.
I am so glad I read the Through Hell and Back Series before reading this book as all the guys, and Esther, play a part in putting these two broken men back together. We even get a catch up with Garrett and Remi from In a New York Minute and there is also a twist at the end.

Firstly, this is my favourite read out of the last few books Felice Stevens has written. I love a book with a main character where I go in wondering how the author will redeem them from my preconceived ideas and he ends up being a total surprise.
Although this book works as a standalone story for Logan & Ryan, I strongly recommend you read In A New York Minute first to get some of the back story to this pairing and in particular Ryan. They are both only supporting characters in that book, but it will show you the full redemption arc of Ryan’s character.
Both Logan & Ryan have their own problems or trust issues to deal with for different reasons, but by the end having each other makes them both stronger. I really liked them both and in particular the journey Ryan took after gaining his sobriety.
For long term fans there’s a bit of a who’s who of guest appearances from characters from former books, so if you are a fan of this author’s back catalogue you are going to be in for a treat - I’ll keep spoilers to a minimum but I will say if you loved either One Call Away or the Through Hell and Back series (they were my first Felice Stevens books) you are very spoiled with Easter egg appearances in this book.

Castles In The Air tugged at my heartstrings and left me tearing up throughout the entire book. Ryan and Logan's story tapped into the hurt that addiction can cause and the journey taken to come back into themselves. Ryan's survival led to drugs and alcohol and into a person he hated. Logan's loss of his big brother to drugs left a cold existence and a hole in his soul. Ryan and Logan's healing journey started the moment they met and the threads only strengthened with love.
This book taps into the paths that addiction takes and how it can wound not only the person fighting to overcome addiction but for those who love them. I love a book that has me not only crying, smiling, or yelling out loud for the MC but a twist that I did not see coming. Castles In The Air is a book that will go on my Re-Read list. Like several times.

This felt like the most wonderful redemption and second chance story. Ryan and Logan both squeezed my heart, although in different ways. You can feel the emotions and the chemistry practially leap off the page(or screen). These two just feel...inevitable and I love the way they just couldnt seem to stay away.
Also...all of the cameos in this book made it feel like coming home to see lovely family you havent seen in ages. You immediately feel happier in their presence.

This is a long, emotional journey for Ryan and Logan. Ryan is a divorced addict and disbarred attorney who once hooked up with Logan. Logan is also an attorney who has unresolved issues due to his brother's addiction and tries to save Ryan. It is painful to read of their feelings and self- worth issues as Ryan moves to a semblance of health and getting to know himself. Logan is patient and giving because he really cares. There is a crawling slow burn in the book but extreme levels of intimacy and hurt as they work towards a relationship against all advice. Be prepared to feel sympathy and shed tears. I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary opinion.

I have long been a fan of Felice Stevens. A master of the emotional tale, this haunting story is her at her very best.

This book is intense, and completely focused on addiction and recovery. Mind your CW’s. It is an absolutely beautiful book, full of wonderful characters. At various points I laughed, cheered, cried, and yelled at the MC’s. Such a great book.

This is a story involving heavy drug use, so please be aware if you have triggers. The story centers around Ryan, who was addicted to drugs and alcohol for years and finally hit rock bottom. He finds the strength to embrace sobriety on his own terms.
At first, Ryan has so many flaws that it’s difficult to see his good points. His addiction made him an unkind person, but as the story progressed, he did redeem himself. Logan, who once had a brief encounter with Ryan, tries to help him at first but ends up smothering him with good intentions.
The two finally reconnect as friends, and I am able to understand Logan’s controlling nature due to his past. However, the loss of his brother, which was revealed early on, seemed to overpower Logan and be very unhealthy.
He manages to relax around Ryan and lets the relationship evolve. This was a story about rebuilding one’s life, but I felt it had moments that just weren’t believable. I don’t want to expand on this point because it could be a spoiler. I never was able to see the pair as a couple, even though they both definitely grew stronger together.
While this book did not work for me, I can see many people enjoying it. Happy reading.

Brilliant emotional read.
Ryan a drug addict loses everything, job, husband life. When Logan sees him cleaning he offers him a helping hand which Ryan took. But after a while he disappeared. Logan looks everywhere for him.
When he finds him he finds out he was still drinking and taking drugs while living with him.
An emotional read both men have hurt in their pasts . Ryan parents kicked him out and Logan had Lise his brother.
Both men went through a lot to heal and build up a relationship.

This was a great balance of such a heavy topic, addiction and recovery, with love, friendship and life affirming moments throughout. Ryan was not a very likeable character from the off, both for his present actions, mainly running away from Logan without a word, and his history. Given his history, it was easy to sympathise with Logan in this situation but of course, Ryan wasn’t to know the extent of the damage his disappearance had caused.
It took some time and a lot of healing and ups and downs but the end definitely justified the means and it was great to watch both MCs become better people, both apart and together.
A great read full of depth, as expected from Felice.

Oh man this one was so good! Yes it is about addiction and addiction is brutally hard. But this story has some awesome moments and it is more about Ryan finding healing and getting his feet underneath him. Logan and he have some insane chemistry but Logan doesn’t understand that his kind of help isn’t what Ryan needs. Ryan needs help and he doesn’t find it until he gets away from what is easy. There were times in this book that I thought Logan was being way too pushy with Ryan and not being honest with himself or with the other man. But they work through it all and get to really know each other honestly, which makes the ending very rewarding and hard won. This was a great read.

At first when i started to read I was stunt. I was like, "this isn't the author's usually style." But I keep on and I'm happy I did.
Logon can be a little overbearing when it comes to the way he tries to take care of everything. I guess it stems from his brother's situation. Clearly he's not doing it tight, he needs to take hold of the past circumstances and learn to let go. With the right help.
Ryan's life is a mess and it shows what happens when things don't turn out the way you expected.
I was happy when he made that decision to turn his life around.
When these two characters finally got their act together was the best part. Don't get me wrong I love the journey, I love their togetherness more. Communication is the key to every relationship.

When I wrote the review below, I hadn't read the series containing their own MMCs and the foundation of the Centres, and whose appearance in this book makes much more sense, negating much of my criticism below.
With that background, I have enjoyed this novel much better, and I wish that it had been added to the end of the main series where Ash was finally reunited with Luke and Brandon.

The first of the many books/series by Felice that I have read that dragged on for me.
Despite a sprinkling of her inimitable brilliance, the story simply dragged on and on, lacking a coherent, compelling pair of MCs. A book about such a dreadfully serious subject doesn't need to be so downbeat, with all of the "almost MCs" throwing their opinions into the mix. Well intentioned as they might have been, they kept breaking into the central theme, slowing down the pace of the book, and their interruptions were the same opinions each time.
IMO, the meeting between Logan and TJ should have occurred much earlier in this story arc, giving Logan the chance to understand what Ryan was going through and why Ryan kept on relapsing.
There were too many MCs in the second half, overshadowing the intended main pair. The first half was an overly slow description of Logan's "saviour complex" coupled with Ryan's almost suffocation in luxury, although this wasn't detailed until the second half or final third of the book.
Two and a half stars, rounded up to three for the author's well-intentioned attempt to depict the horrors of addiction.
NB: I bought and read this ebook immediately after re-reading Felice's novel "On The 2," a year after reading it for the first time. It is witty, sparkling, and full of the fun wordplay for which Felice is renowned. This book was simply too downbeat, even for such a worthy and powerful subject.

Be aware: the protagonists are completely separated after the prologue until about 36% of the way through the book.
Logan is a cis white bisexual man. It doesn’t specify his bisexuality in this book, but in the “prequel” book In A New York Minute, Remi observes: “Remi had discovered Logan was an irrepressible tease who never met a man or woman he didn’t like…to fuck.” But then he turns around and tells Ryan that Todd was the first person he told about thinking he was gay. But I think it’s because he is an unusual bisexual man who prefers men 90% of the time (most bi people vastly prefer and/or marry the opposite sex) and doesn’t see himself marrying a woman, so he likely realized his less frequent attraction to women later in life. So he’s by definition bisexual but it would be fairly uncommon he’d be as into a woman as he would a man. Though because he also liked women and had a supportive family and group of friends, he didn’t have the same issue with bullying that Ryan had had growing up, and finds it hard to truly realize that such bullying can be a huge issue. He also kept his bisexuality under wraps and feels “what I do in my bedroom is my business” and didn’t share that he liked men. He’s a lawyer, and he worked as Remi’s lawyer in the book In a New York Minute. He has a history as a bit of a playboy.
Ryan is a cis white gay man. He’s a former lawyer and recovering drug addict. Related to drug abuse he cheated extensively on his ex-husband Garrett, and they divorced 3 years ago. He’s had a crush on Logan since they hooked up a year or so ago and is convinced Logan wouldn’t want anything to do with him. His family was very “traditional” and went to a church that believed people who were Black, brown, queer, Jewish, or independent women caused all the problems in the world. He grew up hiding that he was gay, being bullied for being a “queer boy,” and eventually when his parents find out he’s bay he’s thrown out of his home at 16. He performs sex work to live, and becomes addicted to drugs. He continues to use until just after the start of this book.
I liked the different aspects of addiction that the book touches on. It replaces your personality, your wants, your everything, because it becomes your only family, lover, job, and hobby.
Not sure I would have enjoyed this as much if not for the narration, but Kale Williams does a great job so I’m not super surprised.

Castles in the Air is not thematically like the author's usual stories, as it deals with very serious issues.
Ryan was thrown out by his parents at the age of 16 when he came out of the closet. Since then, he has struggled with drugs and alcohol. This hasn't changed during his studies and his marriage. But with the loss of his job as a lawyer and the end of his marriage, Ryan falls deep and hard. Ryan is a fighter who doesn't give up. For me, Ryan was the defining character of this story. Logan seemed almost a little pale in comparison.
Logan is also a lawyer and knows Ryan from before. When they meet again, Logan offers Ryan a helping hand. I really liked Logan because he has good reasons to act the way he did. It may not have been the best way to support someone, but it wasn't the worst way either and at least he tried.
When Ryan receives devastating news, he goes into hiding. He realizes that he has to do something to leave his addiction and his previous life behind him. Logan, on the other hand, is not one to give up easily and so he continues to search for Ryan for weeks after his disappearance.
I thought it was great how the author handled the topic. I also really liked both characters and could understand why they acted the way they did.
As I said, the subject of alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse is very serious, but presented in an absolutely understandable way without sugarcoating anything. In addition to the characters, I really liked Ryan's circle of friends and supporters.
This touching story is a slow burn romance and that was a perfect fit here. I was honestly captivated pretty quickly and got sucked into the story. The chemistry between Ryan and Logan is great and I was very pleased with the hard-earned happy ending.
Kale Williams was once again fantastic as the narrator. In particular, he delivered the emotional moments brilliantly and there were many emotional parts in this story. Kale Williams' performance was also convincing in other respects with his apt characterization of the protagonists and an appropriate pace of speech.

I’m very used to Felice Stevens delivering emotional reads, this was one of the heavier/tougher ones for me but I think she handles it incredibly! This book looks at addiction from a couple sides as well as grief and it’s definitely not the easiest read but it’s one that will have an impact and stay with you.
I am a big fan of redemption stories and when I realized this was Ryan’s story I was so excited to see how this was going to happen for him! Oh my, it took me some time, I honestly had some moments where I was afraid it wasn’t going to happen, I wasn’t going to like him and he truly made me mad. I got so frustrated with his behavior and how he treated the people around him, but in the midst of not liking him I had that realization that it was part of his journey and that I had to let it play out. Logan on the other hand, I just adored from the beginning and my heart just ached for him and everything he goes through. He doesn’t always handle things the best way but his heart really is the right place and he so desperately cares and wants to help.
I really did love this book, it is raw and emotional and at times you may not like everything that is happening but its real and it’s beautiful and it shows the power of love, healing and forgiveness. I appreciate that Ryan really did struggle with his addiction and his recovery process, it wasn’t something smooth and shiny and easy. It makes him very real in the end I was able to love him that much more for his growth and strength. Logan learns so much throughout this journey as well, about himself, his struggles and grief and also about love. Both Ryan and Logan really grow and learn together while building a real relationship filled with the love they both deserve. I truly adored how this story comes together, it is absolutely beautiful, it was 100% what I was hoping for and I know Logan and Ryan have a forever place in my heart!
And, if you’re a Felice fan so many previous characters show up in this book – it’s a total bonus and I loved seeing them again, plus they were the perfect addition to this story!

‘On paper’ this book is absolutely right up my street: heavy subject matter, emotionally scarred MCs with some serious baggage from their past life find each other in a former hookup to lovers slow burn kind of way. In truth, and it’s an unpopular opinion, although there's so much to recommend this book it didn't really hit the high notes for me.
Ryan's alcohol/drug addiction is incredibly well written - please take care if this is a trigger - which is a double-edged sword because some of the things he does make it so hard to be sympathetic to the character. I didn't really warm to him at all until deep into the book. Whilst Logan's protectiveness which verges on being overbearing is again understandable given the root cause and did make me sympathetic, but his reactions to Ryan before they got everything worked out were sometimes so hot and cold (and even a bit childish on occasion) that I lost a bit of that sympathy at times.
This is a standalone but some of the side characters are from other books, in fact this is Ryan's redemption story as he was first introduced as Garrett's awful ex in a previous story. The reading experience doesn't suffer any if you haven't read the other books, it's more that I've rarely been more frustrated by cameos and other side characters' judgemental attitudes. Those in Ryan's corner all jump on Logan having a saviour complex and coercing Ryan into a relationship that isn't healthy for him, whilst Logan's corner jump on Ryan for being a gold digger junkie and don't respect the hard work he's investing in his sobriety and his future. I get the stance from both corners but I felt this went on for too much of the book.

This book ties in with Felice Stevens' Through Hell and Back series and In A New York Minute and features several of the characters we met there, so while it can be read as a standalone, keep that in mind. Also, this book involves drug use, so if that's a trigger for you, proceed with caution.
This wasn't an easy book to read, as I stated it deals with Ryan using drugs and alcohol to cope with his parents throwing him out when he was 16. This is his redemption story and also a second chance romance which builds up slowly as Logan (a man Ryan hooked up with before) steps in to help Ryan when he finds him working as a janitor at a hotel and offers him a place to stay in. Ryan keeps finding excuses to indulge until he finally hits rock bottom after finding out he'll never be able to practice law again and leaves Logan's apartment. Logan moves heaven and earth to find Ryan, and when he finally finds Ryan, they start over, becoming friends while Ryan rebuilds his life.
I really liked the slow pace in which they rebuilt their relationship, both of them realizing that Logan was approaching the whole matter wrong and Ryan had sort of been using Logan. They had great chemistry, but above all, the support and love that Logan gave Ryan, gave him the confidence to turn his life around.
I loved the cameos from other characters, especially Ash and Esther, both of whom I adore to bits. I also really liked Emerson, Ryan's friend, and was glad he got his HEA in the end.
Overall, a heavier, angstier read from Felice Stevens that I really enjoyed and have no trouble recommending.

Castles in the Air was one of the most compelling books I’ve ever read, and I loved it. This page-turner will keep you on the edge of your seat and keep you guessing. You will realize very quickly that a HEA is not a given.
Ryan is about to hit rock bottom after losing his career as a lawyer. He is addicted to alcohol and drugs and that addiction got him arrested, convicted, and disbarred. He is trying to get his life back on track working as a maintenance supervisor. Logan is attending a conference in the hotel where Ryan is working when their paths cross. Ryan and Logan know one another from a previous hook-up that neither has forgotten.
Logan knows what happened to Ryan and is desperate to help him get back on his feet. He convinces Ryan to move in with him and things seem fine until Logan returns home from a business trip to find a letter denying Ryan’s reinstatement as a lawyer and an empty vodka bottle. So begins a journey for both men that will have you holding your breath and biting your nails.
This author tackles the subject of drug abuse and how it affects not only the abuser but the people in an abuser's life. This story held gritty and very realistic aspects of addiction. I really appreciate how well-written this story was and how the subject matter was handled.
You will enjoy seeing some of your old favorites from the Hell and Back series and One Call Away. As Ryan and Logan rediscover themselves and fight their way to their own HEA, Logan will receive a completely unexpected miracle. Castles in the Air is a page-turner that will leave you in awe!

Ok, we get a redemption arc for Ryan... we get more background on his struggles and all that shit... except, uhm, it’s all kind of weak.
He’s been using since he was 16 or something, and you’re telling me his husband of 10+ years never figured it out? Bruh. Not to mention that habit is expensive as hell, yet we never talk about that. Or how an addict manages to stay on a scholarship and get a law degree while being hooked on shit?
Anyway, nitpicking aside... Logan. I get that he was trying to redeem himself for not being able to help his brother, and that’s why he tries to do it with Ryan... but why Ryan? I’m sure he’s not the first junkie he’s come across. Where’s the connection? All we get is a little lust and a handjob in a club a few years back. Make it make sense.
And Todd... his brother... with all the understanding I can possibly muster, he sucked balls. Ok, you leave and shit happens to you, fine. But then you get sober, get married, have kids, build a whole life for yourself... and you still never contact your family? Your parents died without knowing you were okay, and your brother spent his entire life carrying guilt because he couldn’t help you. Meanwhile, you were just tralalaling through your best life not giving a single fuck. Fuck you.
Also, what the hell was Jordan’s problem with Logan at the end? He was acting like a whole bitch for absolutely no reason :))
So yeah. People sucked, most things made no sense, and the spice was meh. Not very good for me.
