The D'Angelos #4

The Whole Time

Rate this book
From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Catherine Bybee comes a tale of a strong-willed dancer exercising her independence and the rich biker she can’t let go.

Salena Barone has broken free of her family and moved into an apartment above the D’Angelos' restaurant, where she works as a manager—without a husband, thank you very much. But even on a restaurant salary, she soon finds herself strapped for cash. Salena’s never been afraid of living on the wild side, though, so she takes on a side hustle that’ll raise big bucks…and eyebrows, if anyone finds out.

Tattooed biker Ryan is the youngest of the wealthy Rutledge wine family and has never dreamed of rings, forever, or continuing the family business. He’s perfectly happy living his own life and helping out hardworking folks in his own way.

When these two independent singles spot each other at a Rutledge-D’Angelo wedding, the attraction is instant. But as their friendship with benefits evolves into something more, the secrets Salena’s keeping—from family, friends, and Ryan—threaten the happily ever after she never knew she wanted.

Great story! I love her spunk and Ryan is a dream. Fun and sexy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you love stories with lots of family interaction, big family gatherings, and people getting into your business every time you turn around, then this is your story.
Part of a series about a big Italian family, this is a stand-alone read that blends in characters from some of the other books. Easy to follow and dive into, The Whole Time takes us on a journey of life in a close-knit family – sometimes too close!
The two main characters are each trying to break free of their individual family drama and find themselves intertwined more often than not. With big feelings growing and independence at the forefront, this growing romance is fun and sexy! A smoldering slow burn is the perfect description of the growing connection between Ryan and Salena. You cannot help but cheer them on!
Beautifully written, this family drama and steamy romance offers a lot of conversation, a few heated scenes, and a ton of heat and fire between the two that will leave you smiling and looking for more.
Bybee creates characters full of spunkiness and independence who balance each other beautifully. This book is one you can get lost in for hours! Well done!
THE WHOLE TIME is the fourth book in the D’Angelo series! Talk about an awesome family! They always have each other’s backs no matter what is going on within the family. Seriously, I want this family to adopt me! I love them and want to join them for Sunday dinners! Salena Barone loves the D’Angelo family and loves working in the family restaurant. All she wants to do is get away from her over protective parents and moves to the top floor of the restaurant to get out of their clutches! Needless to say, her parents aren’t happy.
The night before another D’Angelo wedding, Salena meets Ryan, and its instant chemistry. In THE WHOLE TIME, neither one of them is looking for a commitment, or so they say. They both seem to be okay with casual dating or are they? Anyway, Ryan is the black sheep of the Rutledge family. He wants nothing to do with his family’s wine business. He, like Salena wants to forge his own path and do what he wants. Not what is expected of him.
I don’t want to say too much for fear of giving away all of THE WHOLE TIME but once I started reading this beautiful and heart breaking story, I could not stop! I really hope there is another book in this series and fall more in love with the D’Angelos. Their family is going to worm their way into your heart and never leave. A perfect heartfelt and wonderful story to spend the afternoon with!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Salena + Ryan
Salena is 26 and finally moving out of her parents' house. Not something that is done in an italian family if you're not about to get married. But Salena has to live her own life now. She's nowhere near ready to get married - she probably never will be.
Then she meets Ryan. He's her bestie's new sister-in-law's brother. She meets him at the wedding.
And Ryan is kinda the same as Salena. Not ready for anything serious.
But it is insta mega attraction on both sides.
Let the fun times begin...
Another super cute love story in this adorable series.
I love the whole family vibe and the sunday dinners and just everything.
Salena is not really family, but she lives in the D'Angelos' house and works in the restaurant - so she's as good as family.
But she's keeping a secret from everyone. People would not understand it!
And Ryan. Would he be okay with it? Probably not.
But we have a lot of adorable falling for each other moments to read through until we come to the slightly harder parts. ☺
I loved reading this.
Adorable. Sweet. Sparky. Sexy. Full of good food and wine and family and friends and all the things!
I so need to see this series on TV one day!
THE WHOLE TIME was such an adorable + fun + sweet + sparky + just beautiful romance - I loved it! Run to your nearest book dealer for your own Ryan - this one is mine!
I have absolutely loved the other books in this series. The D'Angelos family just stole my heart and made me want to be Italian and not just because of the wonderful food. I am not as in love with Salena and it isn't because she isn't a D'Angelo by blood. I question a lot of the choices she has made for her life and even though the author tries to present her as a strong woman embracing her sexuality to its' full extent, I call BS on a lot of that.
Salena Barone is as close to family as you can get without being blood. The D'Angelos' family have taken her in, given her a job and loved her like a daughter. Salena is fiercely independent and at 26 has finally moved out of her parent's condo, only to move into the top floor apartment over the D'Angelos restaurant. Not much difference. One Italian mama's eye for another Italian mama's eye, but at least she can claim to be on her own. She works as the restaurant manager and general dog's body, doing a little bit of everything, where needed, but not making a whole lot of money. When a friend offers her a way to make big bucks, legally even, she jumps at the chance, even knowing that the D'Angelos and her parent would not approve.
Ryan Rutledge is they youngest son of a wealthy wine family. He meets Salena at his sister's wedding and is more than a little intrigued, especially when the D'Angelo men try to warn him that Salena likes to walk on the wild side and is not a good bet for more than a few dates. Ryan isn't interested in his family business and has made his own money in his own way. As a few dates turn into a few months, Ryan smacks headfirst into the barriers that Selena has erected around her heart her and secrets.
My thanks to the Publisher and Author for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.
I feel like this series just gets better and better. To be honest, at first I couldn't relate to the heroine, Selena. But what turned this book into one of my favorites of the series, is the author showed us more to Selena than what she allowed the world to see. When you get to see deep down into a character like that, you always find a common thread and you can relate. I rooted for her. I wanted her to shine. It makes that HEA ending mean so much more. On top of what a great character Selena was, I also really enjoyed the hero, Ryan. I loved him for her. I loved how he pursued her. I loved how good he was to her and how he breached those walls other men never bothered to try to get past. They were a fantastic couple to read about and I really enjoyed their story.
Steamy, delightful, and romantic!
The Whole Time is a passionate, hopeful tale that transports you to San Diego and into the lives of both the hardworking Salena Barone, who is determined to do whatever it takes to make ends meet and live on her own, even if it means doing a side gig that not everyone would understand or approve of, and the successful bad boy Ryan Rutledge who is more than content with casual dating and never actually falling in love.
The writing is smooth and light. The characters are charming, independent, and supportive. And the plot is a heartfelt, flirty blend of tricky situations, tender moments, new beginnings, self-discovery, friendship, family, happiness, romance, and love.
Overall, The Whole Time is a sweet, heartwarming, fantastic addition to the D’Angelos series by Bybee, complete with characters I couldn’t help but root for and a swoon-worthy ending that left me smitten, satisfied and hopeful that there’s still more to come!
Selena Barone has lived with her parents and worked for the D’Angelo’s family restaurant in Little Italy, San Diego, which was fine since she just wanted to have fun, but at 26 she needs independence. Her parents feel she shouldn’t move out unless she’s marrying. Unfortunately, as Selena discovers, being an adult on her own is expensive, and while she loves at the D’Angelo’s since they’re like family, it doesn’t quite cover the bills. Selena gets an unexpected break doing something she loves, yet she’s apprehensive about telling others, worried about how her parents and friends will react. She knows her parents would completely disapprove and judge.
Falling for Ryan Rutledge isn’t part of her plan, but their instant attraction takes hold. Their romance is a slow dance, since Selena isn’t keen on jumping in after she’s been hounded by her parents over and over to find a man and become a wife. Like that should be the only appropriate goal for a woman.
The D’Angelo’s were a large, loving Italian family, a bit nosy, but it all came from a place of love. The mother made me laugh. Selena’s parents, not so much. They were overbearing and too much. Thankfully Selena handled them well.
The Whole Time
was an easy-going romance, with Selena finding her path as an adult, managing family expectations, and finding happiness. I enjoyed Selena’s journey growing up and falling in love. The romance was a slow burn, full of chemistry!
THE WHOLE TIME is the fourth book in the D’Angelo series and I have enjoyed them all. This book featured Salena Barone, who is not a blood member of the D'Angelo family, but is Chloe's best friend and manages the family restaurant. In an Italian family, that makes her family. Salena has made it clear that she is not looking to get married. She likes men, but hasn't found one that she loves enough to give up her independence. Being Italian, you live at home until you get married, but she is stifled and needs more freedom, so moves in the small apartment above the restaurant. In the last book, Beginning of Forever, Gio and Emma have their love story and are getting married. At the wedding, Salena meets Ryan, the youngest of the wealthy Rutledge wine family and Emma's brother. He is also not looking for anything permanent, but they are immediately attracted to one another. As they spend more time with each other, the chemistry is hard to ignore. They have fun, a few physical encounters, and begin to want more than friendship. The problem is, Salena is keeping a huge secret from everyone, one that could ruin everything.
I love the D'Angelo family. They are loud, boisterous and love each other to bits. They tease and harass, but will protect each other with their lives. Salena is another sister to Gio and Luca, so she has to keep things secret from them as well. Beyond that, I don't want to give away the rest of the plot, so will say no more about it. I loved the banter between Salena and Ryan. They have so much fun together, I don't know how they resist one another. Ryan is a swoon worthy partner to Salena's feisty personality and I was rooting for them both to see how much they really cared about one another. I enjoyed their story, and was pleased to see that Salena got her HEA. I recommend this book and the whole series to those who enjoy a fun, enjoyable romance.
The Whole Time is a great contemporary romance and addition to The D’Angelo’s series. I love the D’Angelo family so much!! If you read the first three books in the series, Salena and Ryan were minor characters, and I was so excited to read about their romance. We really get to know and understand both characters in this book, and their love story does not disappoint!
It’s expected that, as an Italian daughter, Salena will live at home with her parents until she marries. But Salena has other plans. She is determined to live on her own, not wanting to depend on her parents or a man. Salena will do whatever it takes to make ends meet. She’s a strong person, and she lives life on her own terms. I love that about her. Ryan’s great too! The youngest of the Rutledge siblings, he’s a bit of a black sheep in his family since he’s not interested in the wine business. He, like Salena, follows his own path, which is great.
Ooof, do Salena and Ryan have chemistry! Neither are looking for anything long-term, and the closest they want to get to commitment is a friends-with-benefits kind of arrangement. But that changes. I love how Ryan isn’t afraid to say and show how he feels, and he’s super supportive and understanding. Their relationship quickly changes to something deeper than either ever expected, and it is romantic, fun, and steamy!
The highlight of the story for me, on top of the swoon-worthy romance, is the D’Angelo family. I just adore them all. They are so loving and fun and supportive, and they’re the type of family that loves unconditionally. I also like how easily they welcome people into their fold. We saw it in the last book with Emma and here with Salena.
I thought this was a great addition to the series, and I loved the epilogue. It was the perfect ending to a great series. I’m eager to see what Bybee has in store for her readers next!
Another day, another Catherine Bybee book that was an absolute delight to read.
The Whole Time (The D’Angelos #4) takes us back to Little Italy in San Diego and the D’Angelo family restaurant. With all the D’Angelo siblings happily married, this book follows family friend and restaurant manager Selena Barone as she moves out of the home of her uber-traditional parents and into the top apartment above the restaurant. When she meets Ryan at the wedding of Gio (the D’Angelo’s middle child) and Emma (their story is in book three of this series, Beginning of Forever), sparks fly both ways but Selena is reluctant to have a serious relationship.
I confess, this one didn’t pull me in as hard or quickly as the other three books in this series - but that’s more a me problem. I had a hard time connecting with Selena and her “I don’t give a @&$#” attitude (especially when she absolutely did give a @&$#), and I didn’t ever feel like I was truly able to understand why she was the way she was. But I liked her a lot. And Ryan? I liked him even more! There’s nothing I love more than a hero who falls first and is willing to be patient and play the long game to win the heart of the woman he loves.
I suspect some readers may say nothing happens in this book. To a point, that is true - we spend a lot of time with Selena and Ryan’s day-to-day activities and seeing their relationship develop in a very sweet, organic way. We watch as Selena builds a potentially scandalous side-hustle to improve her finances. But there isn’t a whole lot of angst or soap-opera levels of drama. Just relatable people dealing with realistic life challenges. And you know what? THOSE are my favorite kinds of stories. They are also the kind of stories this author specializes in and I love them.
Catherine Bybee is one of my favorite authors and this book - this whole series, really - is one of the many reasons why. I know whenever I open one of her books I’m going to get a heartwarming story about lovable characters that will leave me with a smile on my face. And there’s not much better than that!
The Whole Time picks up with Emma and Gio’s wedding where Salena is the strong willed friend of the D’Angelo family, nicknamed “Trouble” by the guys, she makes an impression on Ryan, Emma’s brother and they hit it off, originally as friends but their attraction is immediate.
A low key predictable romance that Bybee fans will enjoy. I thought this story was a bit weaker than the three before it, I guess I wanted higher stakes for the plot but I still enjoyed the characters. Salena’s independence and drive were a highlight but Franny D’Angelo is the true star of the show, I loved her comedic genius!
The book wraps up on a happy ending and I’m curious to know if we’ll see more in this series.
Salena definitely marched to the beat of her own drummer, which made her stick out a bit in her community and especially in her family. Those strict Italian restrictions really driving her nuts and she did her best to live her life and have fun. I really liked how Ryan saw Salena, so much more than she saw herself. Salena often wasn't sure what to do about Ryan, he was treating her like forever, when everyone else treated her like a good time girl for the night. It was refreshing to see Salena bloom in the attention. While all of this was happening, Salena's work was getting busier and she was developing a side hustle that she knew most of the people in her life wouldn't approve of, even as she loved it and the amount of money it was bringing in for her. Finally allowing her a little financial freedom. Of course things blew up in the worst way for Salena and at the hands of a real bitch! All got taken care of in the end, allowing Salena and Ryan happiness.
Salena Barone is a strong willed, take no crap, tell you like it is Italian woman who is tired of depending on her overbearing meddling parents.
Ryan Rutledge is the handsome, tattooed, motorcycle riding distraction that Salena needs.
I loved this book and could not put it down. I gladly lost sleep because I just had to know what was going to happen next.
After reading the first three books in the D’Angelo series, I was delighted to hear that we would get Selena’s story. I was not disappointed! What a fun and wild story it is! Selena is a strong, independent woman who has a reputation (rightly earned) as a player. Ryan’s past is similar. Neither were looking for love or long-term, but when they met, the sparks flew! Both have their secrets, the walls keeping others from getting too close, but chemistry is hard to deny. I loved their friends with benefits dance, and thoroughly enjoyed getting to spend time with the D ‘Angelo’s. Entertaining, emotional, and fast-paced, I had a hard time putting this book down.
Easily read as a standalone, book 4 in the D’Angelos series, by Catherine Bybee, is a romp with two “black sheep” from their large, extended Italian family.
Altho’ neither Salena nor Ryan appease the expectations of their parents, they are highly intrigued with each other. He comes from plenty, she from want but they both are fiercely independent and are making their own way, independent from family; well, sort of…
The D’Angelos are a big Italian family, not unlike my own. Lots of cousins, aunts, uncles, folks we called aunt & uncle; a gargantuan conglomeration of love, loud, laugh and FOOD! Author, Catherine Bybee, certainly did her research when it came to the family gathering scenes!
For the remainder of the story, it’s two family outsiders drawn together with the ever present family members ready to lend a hand, car, pair of shoes, etc. at a moments notice. A bit too much and too far on the intimate scenes, IMO. The author should take a note from her main character: “keep it clean and keep it classy” 📚
I found Catherine Bybee with the previous book in this series (Beginning of Forever June 2023) and opened this one with high anticipation. This is actually the fourth in the D’Angelos series. The D’Angelos family runs an Italian restaurant in San Diego’s Little Italy. The previous books have focused on romances for the D’Angelos siblings. This one begins with the wedding of the previous couple. At the wedding the brother of the bride is flirting and attracted to a very close family friend of the D’Angelos. She is also their new manager and has moved into a small apartment above the workplace.
Salena Barone has finally moved out of her traditional Catholic Italian parents home. When her dilapidated car breaks down she needs money faster than she can make it at the restaurant. A friend from her gym helps her with a side gig. She is very attracted to Ryan Rutledge. He isn’t part of his family wine business but enjoys his life and the success he has in commercial real estate.
Salena has a past and owns it. She is known for being the hook-up girl and hasn’t been into relationships. Ryan is similar (but of course that isn’t a stigma for him). So a relationship is new for both. I like that the book takes small time jumps to show they are getting to know each other over months and not days. Bybee has a light and easy way of writing. The story flows smoothly with conversations and just the right amount of steaminess. I think the only surprise to me is how late the side gig comes to the attention of others. The D’Angelos are an Italian family that is welcoming and a bit in each other's business but always with love and not judgment. Half the fun of the series is the continued interaction with the couples who’ve paired up in the previous books. I’m not sure if this is the end of the series but I will look for more from the author.
Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake for the ARC and I am leaving an honest review.
This book was fantastic! So glad Catherin Bybee wrote a book for Selena. I loved the character Ryan and how he stuck and showed her that he wanted to be with her.
This book was amazing! It gave me all the feels from butterflies, to shedding a few tears! I felt this book showcased a powerful, independent, hardworking woman that was quite literally swept off her feet when she was least expecting. The similarities of the families of Ryan and Salena were evident even though their families backgrounds and upbringing were different. There were so many great life lessons touched on in this book.
Ryan and Salena are the absolute best! I love how the black sheep found the black sheep in this one. The way the families mesh with the D'Angelo family. Catherine Bybee has a way with making you care about the characters and it makes you think of them long after the book is over!
THE WHOLE TIME is truly a story to cherish. Filled with the warmth–and challenges–of close-knit families as well as a stellar romantic pairing, Catherine Bybee tugged on our heartstrings one more time in her final D’Angelos book.
What a superb way to finish out the D’Angelos series! While it’s tough to say goodbye to this dynamic group, THE WHOLE TIME brought together everyone we’ve met along the way for one last hurrah–and for one last romance. I couldn’t wait to get to know Salena and Ryan better. Previous books showed how sassy and outspoken Salena was while Ryan was the protective guy who told it like it was. But you could tell they had hearts of gold, and they adored their loved ones... Read More
Disappointing. I’ve read the first three books in the series and really enjoyed them, so I was looking forward to this one. In the others, I always liked Salena’s character as Chloe’s strong-willed sidekick who owned her choices and sexuality without apology, and was a fierce best friend. Some of that is described, but she feels watered down, and the story is just too straightforward and simple for any romance, and especially for her. Compared to the first three books, this is boring and Salena deserved better.
Other series of Bybee’s can much more saccharine than the D’Angelos series, and this book feels like it fits one of those series instead of D’Angelo’s. Oh well.
I can't do it anymore! Selena is literally the worst, making dumb decisions and then playing the role of the martyr when the consequences come. I could not suffer through any longer to see if she actually had character growth or if at the end she was all the sudden a better person.
Ryan deserved better and her parents were awful.
I have read 4 series by Catherine Bybee and loved all of the books, except this one. This book just did not do it for me. Selena came on a little too strong and Ryan seemed rather wishy washy. I frankly did not like Selena. Ryan was rather sweet. The book just dragged.
Salena has lived her life smothered by her attached and overprotective Italian parents. She’s determined to prove that she is an adult capable of thriving on her own. She doesn’t need to rely on anyone, especially a man. That is, until she meets Ryan. Tattoos and rides a motorcycle - just the kind of man her parents would never approve of.
What started out as Salena just looking to have a good time quickly turns into more as their connection becomes obvious. But Salena has a big secret, one that threatens to ruin her relationships with those she loves - including Ryan.
It took me a little while to get into this book. I also had a bit of trouble keeping up with how everyone knew each other in the beginning. However, once I got past the first few chapters I was hooked. Admittedly, Ryan is what drew me in. He might appear to be a “bad boy” at first glance, but once Salena gets to know him it’s obvious that he’s more than just his looks. He had this ability to push Salena just enough, while also remaining respectful and patient of her wishes.
I also appreciated Salena’s strong will and determination to be independent. But I have to admit I wasn’t crazy about her side hustle. It wasn’t so much the act, but the reactions of her family, friends, and Ryan once they found out. They just seemed a bit too unrealistic, especially given how overprotective her family is of her.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. Coming from an Italian family myself, I loved the close-knit relationships everyone shared with each other. I haven’t read the other books in the series, but I will definitely be going back to read them to catch up on everyone else!
Thank you to Catherine and NetGalley for this ARC, and the chance to review this book.
This was way more than just a sweet romance. I really liked the "tell it how it is" type of main characters, but even they had some secrets.
Salena and Ryan met at a family/friends wedding. Their personalities were definitely similar, but with different backgrounds. Ryan came from a rich family, but didn't get along with his dad and was really off doing his own thing. Salena just moved away from her parents. Her parents weren't taking it well and she was struggling to get by working at the restaurant. Salena and Ryan somewhat bonded over her clunker car that bit the dust.
I enjoyed Salena's ambition to try to earn money on her own, even if she had to keep the how secret. She didn't need a man for that. What a mess though when the secret comes out.
This romance felt real and down to earth and wasn't all cutesy, so a bit of a breath of fresh air compared to a lot of books that are currently out right now.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me a copy of this ARC for my honest review.
