If you raise deadheads, you’d better be able to put ‘em down.

Nobody said it was pretty. But in this day, when vampires aren’t just for breakfast anymore, and the dead are disposable pawns for necromancers, someone has to ante up. Looks like I won the lotto.

Imagine my delight.

You should thank me, really, because the world is batshit crazy.

When the zombie population spikes and no one knows why, it’s up to me to solve the mystery. But there’s a hitch. I'm stuck babysitting Leo Abruzzi, a zombie-bitten gangster who’s turning state’s evidence. But the mob and a powerful necromancer will stop at nothing to take us down.

"Thanks for the dance. I wouldn't have missed it for the world." This quote from the book pretty much sums up my feelings about it! Allie Nighthawk is a combination of Stephanie Plum and Anita Blake. Her philosophy: If you raise deadheads, you'd better be able to put 'em down.

Allie is used as a consultant by the Cincinnati PD when they need to solve a crime and the only way to do it is to talk to a dead witness/victim. But, Allie has rules. Grief over the loss of a loved one wasn't a reason to raise the dead. That was rule number one, right before rule number two: always put down those you raise.

Allie is partnered with Police Detective Rico De Palma and tasked to babysit Leo Abruzzi, a zombie-bitten gangster who's turning state's evidence. Allie's main task is to keep Leo alive long enough to testify.

Her neighbor, Nonnie Nussbaum, becomes involved when Allie asks her to watch her bulldog, Headbutt, and her parrot, Kulu. And, this woman makes a mean lasagna. Leo outrageously flirts with Nonnie in order to get his fill while he awaits his fate.

But, things start to go south when the zombies start doing things that are out of the ordinary. Are they developing the ability to think for themselves and strategize? Or, is somebody using zombies to get to Leo? And, who would be doing that? Maybe Allie's nemesis, another necromancer with Voodoo connections?

The author has a real way with words and I love the fact that she uses unique ways to describe things in a genre that is sometimes faulted for being stale. For example, in Nonnie's world, zumbas are zombies. And the term zushi? Brilliant! A perfect description of the mess made by the undead!

I can't write a review of this book without some of my favorite quotes:

"I owned a hoe? What the hell, the business end of that thing would shred a biter into coleslaw faster than a Vegematic."

"Always with the voiding, these docs. You could be hemorrhaging like a stuck pig, but if you can pee and poop, you're headed out the door."

"There's no crying in corpse whispering."

"You spike one zombie's head, the ACLU and the paparazzi are all over you like stink on a flesh-eater."

"No matter how much the rotters reek like sun-baked sushi, no matter how many of their orphaned body parts skitter after me like flesh-bots in search of a host, at the end of the day, reruns of Dancing with the Stars, a bag of Doritos, and a Jack Daniel's slushie have always been enough to take off the edge."

A great start to what I think will be a great series. If you love snarky, kickass heroines, zombies, loads of action, great dialogue with a little love interest thrown in, give this book a chance. You won't be disappointed!

(Thanks for giving me the chance to find this great new series!)

I have to love The Corpse Whisperer’s Allie Nighthawk. She’s everything I aspire to be… if I ever find myself as an independent contractor for management of the undead. Funny, smart and practical, she has a unique way of looking at things and she isn’t shy about sharing.

An interesting concept, Allie has the ability to awaken the dead for the practical purpose of solving crimes. Who makes a better witness than the victim? Unfortunately, putting them back to sleep isn’t as simple—and that’s where things get interesting.

Set in Cincinnati, there is plenty of detail in the writing to make it believable. The dialogue has plenty of snap and the plot is surprising and moves quickly. And she’s a dog lover. What’s not to like? I enjoyed the story and look forward to the sequel. The Corpse Whisperer is great entertainment.

An interesting premise poorly executed. An incredibly obnoxious and TSTL (too stupid to live) heroine. She tells the ME to tie up a corpse/possible zombie but fails to take this same very basic caution every damn time she decides to create a zombie herself thereby putting herself and everyone in the surrounding areas at risk!? Again and again. Really? I had to skip through entire scenes and chapters of complete stupidity. Don't waste your time. Safe to assume any high ratings were given by family, friends and/or paid reviewers.

Fabulous, Fun Gritty Ghoulie Reading!

A mutual friend gave me this paperback for Christmas and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Boldwood shows a fresh mastery of the snappy Sam Spade-like patter in the detective genre, but of course heavy on the "noir" side in the sense of doesn't-get-much-darker-than-a-partial-zombie-apocalypse sense.
The action moves smoothly from funny to intriguing and then surprises you with sudden twists of real-world sentiment. I blasted through it quickly and am hungrier for the sequel than the rotters of Cleveland are for new brains.
Aim for the head! Allie Nighthawk cries- and Boldwood's first in the series will hit you right between the eyes too, every time.

I loved the prequel and I love zombies and kickass women that take them out. Allie Nighthawk believes that is her only talent. She quickly had me cracking up with her quick wit and and take no prisoner’s attitude. She wears fun T-shirts, like Zombies Hate Fast Food.

…one of the few corpse whisperers who put the toys away when clients are finished playing with them.

We start out with a shocking ‘toy’ that Allie will have to put down. The necromancer from her past is determined to seek his revenge, but Allie will do what needs to be done, no matter what.

Allie has a new partner, Rico De Palma, the department’s new liaison for the Paranormal Crimes Unit. I love having law enforcement and the supernatural intertwined. Puts that something extra into the story that I am always on the lookout for. Too bad they leave corpse whisperers hanging in the wind.

I love the cleanup group that comes in after the mayhem Allie creates….Splatz.

Allie has a nosy neighbor, Nonnie, who constantly complains, but that turns around when Allie starts pet sitting for Kulu and Headbutt, and when Leo enters their life…

The Last Dance…terribly sad.

The zombies are changing, becoming more dangerous. They are becoming more intelligent with an ability to problem solve. Carovescology is a new science created to study zombies. Zombies have been created by getting the Z virus or getting bitten. It seems like someone has come up a new method. We have three kinds of zombies….corpsicles, flesheaters, and the freshies. Who is behind it and why are they doing it?

H R Boldwood’s characters are often disreputable and not to be trusted. They are kicked to the curb at every conceivable opportunity.

The Corpse Whisperer by H R Boldwood is such a fun read, as long as the gore doesn’t gross you out. Me…I love it. The grosser, the better. And that is only partly why I am loving this series. Great characters, great storyline, gruesome and funny at the same time.

I want to thank H R Boldwood for the opportunity to read a free copy of The Corpse Whisperer. Now…on to the next book in the series, Corpse Whisperer Sworn.

This is not your typical zombie novel. While it’s still possible that the end of the world is coming, the people inhabiting Cincinnati haven’t figured that out yet. Instead of a zombie apocalypse, the world of the Corpse Whisperer has police forces, legal systems and a medical establishment that has learned to cope with the facts that the dead don’t always stay in their graves and a handful of special individuals like Allie Nighthawk have the power to raise them.

Boldwood takes this premise and runs with it, creating a whole world that is built around the existence of the dead walking mostly on the fringes of society. Zombies and the virus that creates them are studied by scientists. Not all zombies become instant biters and not all bitten people become zombies. There’s even a new medicine that can hold a person back from turning once bitten. The legal system has evolved to incorporate this new reality as gifted people like heroine, Allie Nighthawk, are often needed to raise the dead to ask them important questions like—did you see who murdered you? The rules are pretty well understood by the professionals. The problem that confronts the heroes in this book is that the rules are suddenly changing. People are turning without being bitten and people without the traditional genetic markers are turning too. Perhaps that cliched apocalypse really is about to overrun the world.

In the middle of this unfolding crisis, is Allie Nighthawk. Studying Nighthawk would make any psychologist’s day. She has this amazing power but her ethics keep her from getting rich with it because she actually cares about people and the world around her. Yet those same people don’t seem to like her very much and she has become brash and difficult as a defense against constant rejection and ill treatment. Yet, when push comes to shove, she still stands in the thick of things, loyal to the core and determined to keep the undead from hurting people.

Nighthawk works as a consultant to the Cincinnati Police Department, and they don’t like her much either—even as they keep needing her skills to help with their investigations and generally keep the citizens of their fine city from being killed. Allie’s police detective partner enjoys giving her as hard a time as she gives him, but he has a major personality defect—he’s hard in lust with a news reporter named Jade Chen who keeps her ratings high by loudly criticizing Nighthawk every time a zombie rears its head in the city. And they’re rearing their heads a lot these days, and exhibiting new behaviors that scare the fecal matter out of anyone with enough knowledge to understand what’s happening.

As if all of that wasn’t complicated enough, Nighthawk has been assigned to help protect Leo, a mob accountant who has decided to squeal on his superiors in front of a grand jury. Those superiors, quite understandably, want to prevent him from doing this, but are they the only ones trying to kill him? Oh, and there’s one more thing about Leo which explains Nighthawk’s involvement with him. He’s been bitten and only a new drug is keeping him from turning right away. His tolerance for the medicine is growing, however, so it’s only a matter of time before he starts biting other people with the rest of the zombies.

Leo is the character that best shows Boldwood’s brilliance as an author. He starts out brash and unlikeable, but the longer he appears on the pages, the stronger you will root for him to beat the zombie thing. That’s not easy to do, and he’s not the only character that Boldwood tricks you into liking.

So, if you like great characters, non-stop action, a couple of solid mysteries, a smattering of genuine surprises, and your zombies without the cliched apocalypse, you should really give the Corpse Whisperer a try.

A new and exceptional take on zombies

Zombies, voodoo, hoodoo. Ancient legends which delve into the very heart of the human psyche. Our deepest fears, brought to life. Undeath in its most raw, horrific experience.

Zombie mythology, scientifically, is based in slave culture and relies on blowfish toxin. However, Boldwood's concept is tied tightly to modern times, where viruses abound and horrific death is all too likely in an overpopulated world where viruses are no longer hidden in forests destroyed by human greed.

OK, so blowfish and deforestation is not given as a reason for zombieism here, but we do get an excellent new take on zombies and the horrors of human greed and power struggles run amok. An Excellent take. I had considered myself as having outgrown the tired old zombie tropes that are so prevelant again these days, but I am very happy to say that I picked up this book on a whim and am so glad I did. I will be following the series, and look forward to Allie and her crew following their paths to enlightment - and to kicking some serious whackjob derriere.....

This story moves at the speed of a motorcycle. Allie is set on a hero's journey, but even the people who want her gone, want her to do the sleuthing. A tough woman who turns enemies to dust or friends without a pause.

What a wonderful, entertaining, humorous and very different story. I absolutely loved it. None of the characters are perfect, but they’re an entertaining lot. The different slant on the necromancer and the zombies is intriguing, and the side characters add to the mystery. Can't wait for the next book to find out what else happens! I recommend this read for any UF fan looking for something different.

Allie Nighthawk has principles, but she also likes to eat and feed her pets so when the police hire her to raise help babysit/protect an FBI informant who is in the process of turning zombie, she takes the job. Allie knows nothing about witness protection, the Mob, following orders or protocol, or using a filter- but she does know her way around raising and stopping zombies. When she finds herself in over her head and all the facts she knows thrown out the window, Allie is going to fight for the truth- even if it costs her a job- and maybe her life.

This was totally like the well-meaning madcap misadventures of Stephanie Plum meets the scary, gory supernatural of what Anita Blake use to be. There was a mystery that needed to be solved, there was some creepy/gory supernatural zombie action, some surprising amount of heart and feels, and the terrible yet hysterical antics and situations that Allie kept finding herself in (sometimes without her even meaning to) such as brains in the morgue or a nosy neighbor training birds to say "appropriate" comments. I blew through this story in a day, it was easy to read and stay engaged. I would go so far as to say this is a fun, lighthearted, zombie gory cozy mystery (if such a thing can exist).

I was a little confused about the world and the whole zombie situation, it was way more complicated that any other zombie story I have read (and I have read a lot- I love zombies!). There are so many types of zombies and reasons for zombies that kept being added as the book progressed I feel a little like I needed a spreadsheet to keep track of the whys and hows. I am hoping that the next book will build on what this story hinted at.

The main mystery aspect that Allie was hired for in this book was resolved but there was an underlying mystery going on that I would love to know more about. The ending hinted at a much more complicate world that I am so down for learning more about it! Count me in for the next Allie Nighthawk mystery (and I am hoping for some romance with a certain partner!).

Allies is a Corpse Whisperer, not only can she raise them up, she always puts them back down. In the time when city is full of zombies, who are turning crazies and weirder, her job is very important. And very messy. :) Allies is the kind of character I like to read about, she is though, full of sarcasm and a little bit quirky.

The story is very intense, once I started I couldn't stop reading, till the last page. There are many unexpected twist and turns. I liked the supernatural aspect of the story very much and Allie made it fun to read. :)

The corpse whisperer

Allie Nighthawk is able to raise the dead and ends up working with the local police. What began as an involuntary involvement became a crusade to save an old gangster from really early retirement. Allie grew on me and I recommend this book to all who like a great and funny hero!

Another winner.

I liked this book but not as much as the first. I didn’t like that Allie basically capitulated and threw her own rules out the window immediately. I also wasn’t a fan of any of the interactions between her and Rico, she basically treats him like he’s her boss, when he’s her partner and kind of a jerk.

In chapter 3, she mentions her HOA, which I didn’t think she was part of, having witnessed stuff at her house over the years, but she’s only been there for a couple months. Granted she grew up there but hadn’t been near that house in 3 years, according to book 1. This feels like an oversight during continuity editing, not major, but if you’re reading the books back to back, it’s very noticeable and annoying. Towards the end, she notes her spare room had been her armoury for years…again no it hadn’t.

There were a few other inconsistencies in this book, taking a car somewhere but returning on her bike, a training setup owned by the FBI one minute then the police the next. This book definitely didn’t get a continuity edit.

The plot of this book took quite a long time to unfold and actually grip me. There were too many things that were nonsensical happening at the start. No way the FBI asks a local precinct (in another jurisdiction) to babysit a high profile witness. They would have a corpse whisperer on retainer themselves or at least gone directly to the FMC, especially since she’s just a contractor for the cops. Why is Allie suddenly being treated like a regular cop/detective when she definitely isn’t one?

However, the last 20% really pulled this book through and I’ll admit, I cried again. This author is phenomenal at getting you invested in these characters, even peripheral ones, and then tugging on your heartstrings.

Allie Nighthawk’s talent for raising the dead, then putting them down again lands her in some interesting situations and a lot of mess. It also presents some wildly funny moments in a story that is also intense and scary at times. One of the scarier parts is the rapid manipulation of zombie DNA that’s turning them into creatures that can think and strategize. Needless to say, the situation places Allie, police officers, and the witness they’re trying to protect in grave danger.

Allie’s next-door neighbour Nonnie, who doesn’t speak English well and refers to zombies and zumbas, adds to the humor. Allie herself is brave, confident, and too caustic at times, but she also has a lot of compassion. The cop who’s partnering with her on this assignment, an aggressive journalist, plus ego-driven law enforcement officials all make for an entertaining cast of characters.

The climax in this fast-paced, second book in the series is incredibly suspenseful. While the story of the witness, Leo, is resolved, the bigger question of how the zombies’ DNA is being manipulated is not. No doubt, this issue is further explored in the next installment of this entertaining series.

Took a bit to get into. Allie a bit annoying at first. Esp with her OTT anger and aggression for no real reason that I could see. She was just kind of a bitch. But she grew on me. Kind of like the annoying Leo grew on her actually. No reason - she didn't actually change, or have a reason or excuse for her bad temper and bitchiness I just got used to it and started to care about her. I prefer some romance in my UF and this was very light on for that. Not even a decent prospect for a good portion of the story and I did NOT like her partner Rico as a future romantic interest (having sex with and defending the reporter that is bullying Allie does not make him attractive as a future bf for her) so I was very happy with the introduction of FBI agent Sean late in the piece as he seems to be cool and very appreciative of how ka Allie is.

I had a rocky start with The Corpse Whisperer. Some things worked for me, while others did not.

I love Allie's character growth. While slow, it is steady.
I'm not sure how to feel about Rico. I just don't see it; the romance angle doesn't work well with nothing to build off... just attraction and little at that, it seems.

I really like Nonnie. She's funny and definitely a firecracker! I hope to see more from her in further books.
Leo was such a good character, and I feel he really helped to develop Allie into a likable character.

While the necromancy is touted as a "gift from god" there isn't a bunch of religion spouted in the book, which is nice.

The mystery surrounding the z-virus is just getting started. I'm intrigued and can't wait to find out more.

I figured I would read something different once. Not my favorite kind of book. Heads up to all readers. It has some gross things in it. Nighthawk she was a corpse whisperer she could bring dead people back to life and other things. The cops hired her to help find out where these Zombies and Eaters where coming from and killing people. If your into info about viruses and where they come from and the why and how it sort of explains it. If you get nightmares from scary movies dont read this book. You will remember how Nighthawk described how you had to kill the Eaters and other yucky stuff in the book. The ending was surprising and full of action .

Thriller Zumbas

I'm not a fan of this Type of Genre but The corpse whisperer Changed my mind. The main character, Allie, Has a gift And can raise the dead and also put them back in the ground. As we all know gifts are not created equal. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was refreshing. It was entertaining. It was humorous, and it was sweet. That may seem strange, but you'll just have to read the book to find out more. I give this 5 stars Because I thoroughly enjoyed it, the quirkiness, the bits of human interactions thatmake any life worth living. The author has made me a fan of Allie Nighthawke.

I am usually reading non-fiction but I will take a break and read fiction. This book is a perfect escape from reality! I enjoyed the setting in my hometown, Cincinnati and the characters are very believable. The story is fast paced, the plot is intriguing. Even though there are more books to come in the series, (and I will be reading them!) the story does stand alone. I really enjoyed this change of genre for me. Some other fiction I have read has been very disappointing but this book was not that at all. Fun, exciting, and suspenseful. What more could you ask?

Zombies

Alli is a strange person, and not only because she can raise the dead. She often argues with her inner voice, has no filter when talking to others, and as good as she is at raising the dead, she is awfully inept when it comes to putting them down.

I liked her moral compass and the way she eventually bonded with a few people. I grew to love her neighbor, which was a huge surprise. I could see the direction her personal life was heading, so the next book should be even more interesting. The zombie juice was a bit much, the messes never stopped adding up.
