Your Bones contains everything you need to know for healthy bones in one book, providing scientifically based advice which highlights natural prevention and treatment strategies. This updated and expanded edition includes many new studies on the dangers of the bisphosphonate drugs and an in depth discussion of two new drugs with potential adverse effects. Also more information on bone-busting patent medicines, calcium supplementation options, strontium, vitamin K2, and zinc as well as a section on bone-building exercise.
After reading all sorts of dire things about osteoporosis online and in other books, it was nice to read something hopeful. This book is written in a straightforward, commonsense way that is easy to understand by laypeople. It sets forth a pretty direct and easy-to-follow plan to prevent or treat osteoporosis without prescription drugs.
Another point of view offering alternative to prescription meds backed by scientific data. I recommend this book for anyone gathering info on osteoporosis and osteopenia.
A good first book on Osteoporosis. Covers a lot of basic information and helpful guidance on vitamins. Not much on exercise. Must go elsewhere for that.
An optimistic approach to a devastating disease that can affect so many people. The author describes her work to overcome her diagnosis with osteoporosis. She gives an easy-to-read description of why standard treatments can make this condition worse. It's scary that so many 'routine' drugs, such as antidepressants or anticonvulsants, can have a major effect in causing osteoporosis and that men taking such medicines are at high risk of osteoporosis. Her personal comments also include well documented footnotes with scientific studies. The role of specific exercises is highlighted. I bought the book because of the sections on foods and supplements to help with bone health. Although already dated (such as the current recommendation of the optimal vitamin D level being 150) it's a good synopsis of supplements and what to consider, as well as medical blood tests and what the numbers mean.
I think that the book Dr. Lani's No-Nonsense Bone Health Guide is more balanced. Although I am very scared of taking the osteoporosis meds, for some of us who really need to stop the loss of bone, it is the right thing to do. This book makes you feel as if you are doing something really wrong if you do take the meds. I talked to a neighbor whose sister-in-law's osteoporosis is so bad that she broke her thumb when her thumb got caught in her jacket. She needs help going to the grocery store because she can't lift anything even marginally heavy. It is life changing to get to that point. If you have this condition or are close to it, do a lot of research. Check out many books and websites and do what is right for you, including eating right and strength training exercise, as well as meds if needed.
Basically the crux of the book: Eat mainly plants, weight bearing exercises with an emphasis on Pilates and take a good quality vitamin supplement making sure it has proper calcium and Vitamin D.
I found it a little too scientific for my liking. I don’t have any chronic illnesses that I may contribute to bone loss. I would still recommend the book but I think there are definitely sections to skim over because they may not be pertinent.
I also found a lot of repetition in the book. I wish it gave more exercise examples.
In a nutshell: eat a plant-rich diet; exercise; don't smoke; have labs done to assess needs; take appropriate supplements designed for bone health; monitor bone loss through urine test to make sure not losing bone; assess progesterone level and use bioidentical progesterone if needed....
This book could use further editing. I found a few inconsistencies and one or two inaccuracies. Additionally, I'm unsure what I think about supplementing with strontium. Overall, though, this is a greatly informative book.
At the age of 41, I have been diagnosed with osteopenia, a condition I am, by most accounts, too young to have...and my very early understanding (until I go for more testing) is that it is severe, given how young I am. After spending a portion of my time off researching my condition, I have purchased this book, to give me hope~ not only of stopping the bone loss, but of reversal of the condition completely. It is possible. It has to be.
Here's hopin'!
***Oh my thankful stars! This book gave me so much hope in understandable terms, clearly shown research, and real life applicable eating, exercising, and supplemental advice. I go back to the doctor soon, and this book and my copious notes will go with me.
Seemingly thorough review of osteo medications at the beginning of the book. Unfortunately side effects are just listed rather than giving frequency of occurance. Also, this section is sprinkled with personal commentaries rather than being objective.
The best easy read out there about bone loss and how to build it once again. I knew I was NEVER going to take drugs when the doctor told me my DEXA showed osteoporosis. This book gave me hope and affirmed for me what I know to be true about our resilient bodies.
I skimmed through this book - found the information helpful for a person like me who doesn't want mainstream medication and to understand how I can reverse osteopenia. This gives hope and determination to forge ahead with self-care using the information in the book.
Well written and informative; easy to read without too much technical medical detail. A hopeful and uplifting book about alternative therapies and treatments for Osteoporosis.
