How could his brother, deathly ill, have simply vanished? Were dragons truly eradicated from Ryk?

What then were the unexplainable noises frightening the countryside?

The last thing they want is to be the cause of a new war.

Do you like dragons? The only right answer is yes. What about tales of a mystical land where dragons were long thought extinct, but were actually in hiding, waiting, calculating their next move? Throw in some (occasionally) silly kids into the mix and you've got yourself a tale (or should I make a pun and say tail?)!

Dragonsown may be short, but the story is phenomenal.

I think it's hard to find a unique way to use dragons nowadays, because it feels like it's all been done before, but here it's a nice fresh perspective. AND SO CREATIVE TOO.

You definitely do get clues as the book goes along and if you're older it's not that hard to piece them together. That doesn't take away from the excitement though.

The plot isn't slow, but it does take several chapters to figure out what's going on and from then on it's so gripping you won't want to put it down.

I love the characters, all of them (okay, Letana wasn't my favourite, I'll admit). Maybe I have a new appreciation for just the right amount of detail after the last book I finished (which had excessive detail) but I really really dig this. I didn't feel one character was unneeded and there weren't too many thrown at the reader at once so it was easy to tell them apart.

My favourite character is Seraii (who else?), she's the cutest.

Kael, whose name I was pronouncing closer to Kal-El (just without the l in the middle) than "kale" in my head, is pretty cool. I feel bad for him too, poor boy kept losing his clothes all over the place. I feel bad for Keaton as well, he missed so much action.

I don't read that many books with main characters who are male so it's even more special.

Another thing I really love is the poetry. My favourite kind is when it rhymes and oh, it rhymes all right.

There were some twists I didn't see coming and then there's the ending...

Ten pages before the book's end I started to get nervous that everything wouldn't be resolved and then around six pages before, I started to cry. I WAS NOT EXPECTING TO CRY. It was an emotional moment ok?

The ending itself is satisfying but I NEED A SEQUEL. NOW. PRONTO. There's so much to explore still.

Dragonsown is a gem, I'm so glad I read this.

Dragonsown is a book I started writing in 2010 and self-published in 2020. Due to real life and having a day job, it was a project I never thought I would complete, until Covid. If it hadn't been for the world shutting down, I would still be carrying around a weathered notebook with a mishmash of unorganized scenes and random ideas.
Dragonsown is a Young Adult Fantasy Series Opener of what will be 6 books.
Tropes include: Reluctant Hero/Waiting Evil/Soulmates/Enemies to Friends/Coming Of Age/Innocence Lost/Adversity.
In my opinion, it is a fast-paced, fun read with action, humor and many touching moments.
Dragonsown is good. The prequel, The Besieged Unicorn of Ryk is even better.
The sequel, Dragonsown-Surge, is currently only 12,000 words and is already kick-a$$.
If you love dragons, magic and fantasy, please consider giving my series a chance.

I wasn't sure about this book in the beginning as I hadn't read anything YA in years. However, I loved the cover, found it beautiful! I was sent the ARC to read and review.

The two main characters, Kael & and Keaton, are twin teen boys. Erika has written them both with awesome characteristics, behaviors, and a sense of humor. Similar bit different from each other.

The storyline was captivating from the start to the end. It tells of their adventures and, of course, brings the existence of dragons into the story.

Overall, the book was exciting, I mean, what's not exciting about dragons existing and hiding out when they are thought to be unique.

Title: Dragonsown
Author: Erika Leigh Agnew
Pages: 188
Genre: Fantasy/Young Adult
Rating: 4/5

Synopsis:

Ryk rose from the ashes of The War of Black Ash, a war that saw the extinction of dragons. Now threatened once more, Ryk is facing an invasion. Twins Keaton and Kael are left to fend for themselves as panic sweeps the country. When Kael mysteriously vanishes one night, Keaton finds himself at a loss and full of questions. How could Kael vanish when he is so ill? What are the loud, unexplainable noises from the forest? Are they an indication that dragons have returned? Soon the devastating truth is revealed, and it is up to the twins to right the wrongs, because the last thing they want is a new war breaking out.

Review:
Thank you to the author for sending me a copy to read and review.
I love the front cover of this book; it really did catch my eye. Surface is the first book in the Dragonsown series and although fantasy isn’t my usual read, I was looking forward to getting stuck into this one I liked that I really didn’t know what to expect, but I was eager to find out. The reviews looked very promising too, but I wanted to go in blind with this adventure.

The thing that stood out to me about this book were the twins Keaton and Kael. I loved Keaton’s personality, he was a cheeky chappy, and a refreshing character. I loved how he was the total opposite of Kael and at times I really felt for poor Kael as it didn’t look like he could catch a break. I really did enjoy watching the characters develop, especially Kael.

I could really picture the authors descriptions in this read and she was able to create some fab imagery. I always have admired fantasy authors because their imagination amazes me and this was no different for Erika, she really is admirable. My only little niggle is that I’d have also loved to have some pictures and maps of the things she was describing, I think it definitely would have really brought the story to life.

When it comes to reading fantasies, I’m usually overwhelmed with all the characters you have to get your head round, but it was different for this read which was brilliant because I could focus on the storyline, not who is who. The writing style of fantasies can usually go over my head, but again not the case for this read, the author kept me engaged and didn’t overcomplicate anything.

This was a strong opener to a book series and any dragon lover will enjoy this book, It is also an ideal book for those who are new to fantasies as it eases you in gently. This is also categorised as young adult, but honestly, I think this book would be enjoyable to all. To say I had no clue what to expect, I was definitely pleasantly surprised with this read.

If you like dragons, you'll enjoy this YA fantasy by Erika Leigh Agnew! I enjoyed the plot and the characters. It started off with some action and it was nice to see how the twins interacted with each other and those around them. I don't typically read YA anymore, but I did like this story.

Engels

Erika Leigh Agnew is a Young Canadian lady who loves to travel and is committed to nature and animal conservation. She has an obsession with dragons, horses and sharks.

She used that obsession with dragons to write the book Dragonsown. This story was initially written for the Amazon Storyteller UK contest.

A war that was fought long ago and that meant the end of the dragons. Now the brothers Keaton and Kael must separate truth from fiction and see what they believe themselves. Everything they thought they knew changes in one second. When Kael suddenly disappears after an illness, Keaton is left alone to see his questions solved. Why are the Nyaris attacking Ryk? Why did his brother disappear? Are the dragons really completely gone? Once the twins have their answers, they have to put some things right, but can they achieve the impossible or not? Or is this the start of a new war?

The book is not too thick and this is a bit of a shame. I was sorry I came to the end so quickly. Sometimes you have those books that you don't want the story to end.

The story is very nicely put together and was written in an English that I am not used to. It struck me as old English if you know what I mean. That feeling came from the use of words and the way the dialogues were set up. But the fact that it feels old fits perfectly with the story. I must say that during the dialogues I sometimes heard Sean Connery in the role of Ramirez, from the Highlander films, talking in my head. It's crazy how you can sometimes link a voice to a book or character.

I really like the way she shapes the dragons. In a way that I haven't read much before. The other creatures she mentions in the story are also nicely described so that you can form a picture of them.

Her characters are very intelligible and evolve nicely throughout the book. They grow into their roles and their characters mature. For example, I could sometimes get angry at Kael and a few pages later I felt sorry for him.
The ending of the story, as already mentioned, comes way too soon. I didn't want it to stop. It soon becomes clear that this will form part of a series and I'm happy about that.

Conclusion
For a debut this is a very good story. Good growing characters, beautiful creatures. Dragons that are presented to you in a different way than usual. A story I'm glad I read.

The writing is done well, lots of character development. I was drawn in to the story with the boys empathizing with them and their struggle and progression, and feeling anger and disgust against their father for his actions. With how the author describes the dragons, particularly Seraii, I wish there were pictures because they sound gorgeous! There is definitely more room for another story in a sequel, and I sincerely hope there is more. I really enjoyed this book. I highly suggest giving this book a read, you won't be disappointed!

*Edit: I just finished the book a second time, and I must say it's even better after you read it again. Small details I missed or forgotten came to light, the subtlety and foreshadowing Erika put into the book are fantastic. Didn't know it was possible, but I love the book even more now

I have been looking for a dragon book, and this one was AMAZING. This was a really superb story of an adventure. The writing was excellent and kept my attention pretty well throughout the story. The characters were all fantastic and well-developed. Seraii was so cute. This would be a great book to put artwork in. I wanted to see the dragons so bad (I have aphantasia so I can't visualize at all), but I just know that the art of the dragons would be absolutely stunning because the descriptions were wonderful. I loved the friendships that were created in this book, and because I am a sap, it made me want to cry a little bit. Found family (or friendship?) really tugs at my heartstrings. Although this book was a little short, it truly took me one one hellavu adventure!

Fantasy is always a difficult genre for me to rate since I'm pretty picky about it.Admittedly I don't like most of what I read of it yet I'm still always eager to try out a new story . Dragonsown was even trickier to star because it also falls into the YA category which is one I rarely delve into . I ended up grading it 4 stars because it did keep me engaged and the subjects such as family loyalty, keeping secrets, and coming of age among them were done credibly.I did not see the plot twists coming either which was nice because its good to be surprised. Overall fans of these types of tales will be entertained . So if you need a little adventure in your reading life add this to your TBR pile .

I COULDN’T PUT THIS BOOK DOWN!!! Agnew’s writing was exceptional and kept me engaged right until the very end.
The story follows twins Kael and Keaton as they grow up and learn about their father’s betrayals. The brothers are likeable, eager to prove themselves, and have a bond like no other.

Perfect for fans of Eragon and the Hobbit and fun twists!

This was a wonderful YA fantasy of dragons and mythical creatures. It was full of action, adventure, and unbreakable bond of twin brothers.

The world the Erica Leigh Agnew has created is incredible. You can vividly see what she has written, and it comes to life on the pages.

I absolutely loved getting lost within the pages of this book. The twin brothers, Kael and Keaton are the main characters and their story was one of ups and a lot of downs. They are tested, but their bond will not be broken.

Wonderful YA book for any age.

Super fun. I needed something easy and light to read and this was great. I wish we could continue with where we are in this story sooner, but the next book is a prequel. I am impressed by how much Agnew accomplished in 170 pages. Somehow the book felt much longer, while simultaneously ending too soon!

I was given a review copy of this book and found it enjoyable. I've always loved fantasy and the existence of dragons is an excellent idea.

Twin brothers were like other siblings in that they are different, squabble but are there for each other when necessary. The story is set where you would expect with this genre, while the characters suited the plot. The family dynamic was unstable with a mother dead and a not-so-good father. There were rumours of invasion.

Kael is thought odd, but why? What was that going through his head? Each brother faced challenges and adventures and - let there be dragons.

Some twists and turns gave some tension and suspense. I particularly enjoyed Seraii's thoughts.

It was a little slow and confusing at times but overall, it was a fun read.

Worth a look.

Dragonsown: Surface is a great YA/middle-grade fantasy story about a boy named Kael who discovers he is one of the dragonsown. I will admit that the first quarter of this book was very slow and I almost gave up on it, but I am glad I stuck with it because it really ramps up after Kael leaves the village and finds his uncle. I can not really say much more about it or I will ruin the awesome surprises, but let me just tell you that the storytelling is fantastic and the characters are really top-notch. Yes, at the beginning the twins are insufferable but give them some time and they will come around. I can't wait to read the next book!

Dragonsown: Surface is a sensational book written by the exceptional and talented author Erika Leigh Agnew and wow Agnew does not disappoint! Dragonsown: Surface thrilled me from start to finish and as I read the book I couldn’t help but get lost in its pages and the world of the Ryk Kingdom. Dragonsown: Surface did not disappoint and so of course I already recommend this book but if you need more convincing then continue to read to learn more!

Dragonsown: Surface is a phenomenal fantasy tale that will introduce the reader to the stars of the novel, Keaton and Kael, twin brothers who find themselves struggling after they are left to fend for themselves when they are shunned by their father. The reader will follow Keaton and Kael as they try and stay safe amidst an impending invasion. However, things only get worse for the twins when one disappears and the other must embark on a journey to find out what happened, all while uncovering shocking secrets about their beloved homeland, and this book lovers is the short premise of the incredible Dragonsown: Surface!

The story of Dragonsown: Surface is a thrilling one thanks to the enthralling and action-packed moments as well as the unpredictable nature of the book that will have the readers turning the pages with haste from beginning to end. I love books that involve a journey because usually in these stories the character develops and grows as they overcome hardships and that is most certainly the case with Dragonsown: Surface and it made for a captivating journey! What I loved most about Dragonsown: Surface is that the reader is taken on an adventure that is continuously evolving and changing and that in turn kept my attention from start to finish!

Erika Leigh Agnew is an incredibly talented author who clearly knows how to write unique but engaging stories. It was evident to me from the start that Agnew is a passionate writer who surely loves entertaining readers with her literature and putting a smile on readers’ faces. I loved this about the author but what I loved the most about Agnew’s writing is her remarkable descriptions because they genuinely amazed me!

Novels of this nature are difficult to write because you have to transport the reader quickly and effortlessly, but sadly this is rarely accomplished in a story that weaves themes this book does, but not with Dragonsown: Surface! Dragonsown: Surface is the way it is because Erika Leigh Agnew knows what she is doing! Agnew knows how to whisk her readers away and entice them with magnificent descriptions and keep readers entertained from start to finish!

To conclude my thoughts on this wonderful book Dragonsown: Surface is a marvelous, stellar, and supreme book that will entertain, delight as well as charm readers from start to finish! It is a standout novel and should not be missed. That is why I, of course, have to award the incredible Dragonsown: Surface five stars!

Erika Leigh Agnew's Dragonsown throws you headfirst into a world on the brink. A century after the supposed extinction of dragons, Ryk Kingdom simmers with internal conflict and the threat of invasion. Amidst this chaos, twins Keaton and Kael are thrust into a whirlwind of secrets, family betrayals, and a legacy they never wanted.

Agnew excels at building tension. The political intrigue is palpable, with whispers of rebellion and distrust hanging heavy in the air. Every step the twins take unearths a new layer of conspiracy, keeping the reader guessing and desperate to unravel the truth. The impending invasion serves as a ticking clock, adding urgency to their quest and raising the stakes with each turn of the page.

Keaton and Kael are well-drawn characters, each struggling with their own vulnerabilities and conflicting emotions. Keaton, the responsible elder brother, carries the weight of leadership on his shoulders. He yearns to protect his ailing twin but grapples with his own growing fears and doubts. Kael, the mischievous younger brother, hides a hidden strength and resilience that emerges as the story unfolds. Their bond is both heartwarming and heartbreaking, tested by the devastating secrets they uncover.

Dragonsown's world is richly imagined, with a dark, gothic aesthetic that evokes both awe and apprehension. The remnants of past conflicts, from crumbling castles to whispers of lost magic, paint a vivid picture of a kingdom haunted by its history. The dragons, though shrouded in mystery, remain an ever-present force, their shadow looming over every decision and fueling the fear that ripples through the land.

The book's climax is explosive, a thrilling culmination of all the built-up tension. The action sequences are pulse-pounding, and the emotional fallout is both devastating and hopeful. Dragonsown leaves you hanging on the edge of your seat, desperate to know what awaits the twins and their war-torn kingdom.

Overall, Dragonsown is a gripping young adult fantasy that will captivate readers with its intricate plot, complex characters, and a world teetering on the edge of disaster. If you're looking for a story that will keep you guessing until the very last page, look no further. Just be prepared for the emotional rollercoaster ride that comes with it.

I’m a big lover of fantasy and YA fiction so when I saw a relatively short book involving dragons I was instantly interested. This book focuses on two twins, Kael and Keaton, who have to deal with the horrendous behaviour of their father who treats them like dirt. Kael’s life feels miserable and unfulfilled until he discovers he has a dragon inside of him that he must learn to control. He soon realises he isn’t alone and a lot of people are part of the dragonsown, but this society has to remain hidden in order to protect themselves from those who would want to either harm them or try to control them. Will Kael learn to control his powers, or will his new found abilities give him unwanted attention?

This was a good book with a well established storyline. The plot was clear from beginning to end and it was a joy to follow it along. I’m glad there will be further books as the ending seemed rather abrupt so I’m keen to see where things go!

I enjoyed the interpretation of dragons in this book. The concept of a person being chosen to share their body with that of a dragon felt fresh and fun and was my favourite element of the book! I can’t wait to see this explored further in future books.

The characters were likeable, especially Seraii who is a cool, sassy dragon who makes any scene they’re involved in. The twins were very likeable, but arguably not as interesting as some of the other characters. It can be hard writing young characters, and sometimes I felt the book seemed more targeted at a younger audience as opposed to YA.

Overall, a great book for any fantasy or dragon lover!

Dragonsown: Surface is a YA fantasy novel that focuses on two young boys, Kael and Kelton, raised by their father, Lord Graydon, in the Kingdom of Ryk. The father’s attitudes and terrible treatment of the boys is difficult to understand, but the plot reveals the deep-seated motivation that drives him. Kael is constantly sickly, suffering from hallucinations – visions and hearing voices that aren’t there…or are they?

The two brothers were fairly distinct from one another, but didn’t exactly leap off the page, for me. Their reactions to the big revelations often seemed lacking. It felt as if the author was trying too hard to move the plot forward quickly, which I like, but at the expense of taking the time for our heroes to really process and work through the emotional fallout.

One piece of advice I would offer to the author would be to go through and check on the formatting, because there were a few issues that jarred me out of the book. e.g. Page breaks in the middle of chapters, and dialogue for Person B tacked on the end of dialogue for Person A, making it confusing. Details like this can easily lower a book’s star rating.

I also enjoyed the multi-faceted worldbuilding, although certain elements (for example, Mer-folk) seemed extraneous, serving little purpose in the story.

Overall, the plot was well handled, with plenty of well thought-out twists that came together very well at the end, but ultimately, Dragonstown: Surface was just a little too much surface.

This book was an enjoyable and fun quick read for anyone who likes fantasy and dragons presented in a positive light. Just don’t expect too much in the way of depth.

Can't say no to a dragon book, can I? This is a quick, entertaining novella where the author really puts you in the scene and paints the world vividly. I think it would have worked well as a longer novel to really flesh out more of the world and the characters. However, considering this is (I think!) a young adult fantasy, it did flow well and wasn't bogged down with loads of detail etc. I'd say the audience is probably intended for much younger ages than the books I sometimes read in this genre... that doesn't mean it cannot be enjoyed by older readers though.

It's quick, it's characters are fun and it's overall one of those cosy, easy reads that you can finish in a few sittings! I recommend to those who enjoy the lighter side of fantasy books and of course... those who love dragons!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I normally do not read books that involve Dragons but I am so glad I read this one. I laughed out loud quite a few times when I read this book.

This book involves two twin boys who deal with some family drama, a love interest and find out Dragons aren't extinct after all!

The authors writing is easy to read.  My son is 7 and I know he'd love this story. He can't read it on his own quite yet but it will be great to read it with him. This is a book everyone can enjoy!

This was my first review with Indie Visible and I am so happy that I was able to receive Erika Agnew's Dragonsown. Our story follows twins Keaton and Kael as they navigate adolescence, family drama, and of course.... dragons. Because no good fantasy book is complete without a dragon!
I loved reading this story and seeing the intricate details Agnew was able to put into a shorter book. There were twists, turns, and plenty of action. I would highly recommend to anyone who likes YA or fantasy novels. And I look forward to reading more from Ms. Agnew!
