I read this book at least twice during the week of my finals. I had been looking for something to read, knew the author from some of his other work and a few short conversations over social media, so decided to give this a read.
Reliable was amazing. Yes, it was a pretty short read, but that shouldn't take away the value behind it. It takes a lot to write an entire captivating, developed story and have it still fit into the size of a novella. But it did. The characters are well described, just to the point that without knowing much about their lives, you get a good feel for their personalities and demeanor.
Jeffrey Koval said in the introduction, that this was inspired by a dream that he woke from, "...not afraid, but enthused to record its tale". And that's how the plot almost felt. Like some kind of strange dream, the kind that you have to sorta think about before you fully understand. The whole storyline kept you reading and in suspense, wanting to know more about their situation. I won't say much more about the plot being that I wouldn't want to spoil anything, especially the ending, one of those that makes you sit back and think about how clever it was.

I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this story. It was incredibly creepy and perfect to read around Halloween. I found the narrator's seeming abhorrence of his female companion a bit off putting and confusing, this may have been rectified in a longer narrative where we would have had more time to get to know the characters, but besides that I enjoyed the story a great deal. The scene at the end was perfectly described and made me squirm while I was reading it.

Nice light ghost story, not much meat and potatoes but somewhat engaging , could use more detail.
