When you’re faced with going home after so many years of being an adult, on your own, you realize just how much you’ve changed. The old gas station isn’t the same one you bought candybars at anymore. Your school doesn’t look familiar. The streets are cracked and broken - and you realize you are, too.
Breakaway Ranch isn’t for sale, but the bankers disagree.
Like everyone else in the community, Jacob was practically born riding a horse. As a child, his mount fell into a hole and left both of them with shattered bones. He lost his horse that day as well as most of his range of motion below the waist. He left his childhood crush and his home behind shortly after, growing into a powerful entrepreneur who wants nothing more than to never see the city’s sign again.
When Dan’s ex outed his sexual preferences to his family, he lost everything. It’s only through Breakaway Ranch that he’s found healing. So when bills start to mount and the loan sharks swim in, he knows he’s got a limited amount of time before he’s out on the street with too many mouths to feed. When they bring in a young man with more money than sense, Dan can’t believe who it turns out to be.
Will Jacob confront his past and find comfort in the arms of a long-lost friend? Or will Dan find himself with nowhere to go once again?

This book was my stab at J.P. Oliver. Be it solo works or co-written books with Peter Styles, I haven't had much luck. Not being a fan of cowboy themes, this might not have been the best one to go with, but I decided to give it go. Mind you, I didn't read the blurb beforehand, and while I do think I would have picked another J.P Oliver book instead if I had, I don't think the outcome would be any different as I've come to realize the writing style just doesn't jive with me.
A constant issue I've had with this author is that the characters lack character. The only defining thing about Jacob is back injury... and the severity of that seems to fluctuate as the plot requires. The blurb says he has lost most of the range of motion below the waist (not his dick, that works fine), and he uses a wheelchair sometimes (though not once after the first chapter), and even though walking and driving seem to send him into agony, he didn't seem to have any issues with his range of motion or pain during or after fucking. And Dan is apparently a medium, because while he claims his homophobic family is dead to him, he still takes his father's calls throughout the decade since being thrown out by his family.
The plot is predictable. Though, how the ranch didn't fail before now, when Dan is essentially a social recluse and constantly feeling sorry for himself, is a miracle. And once Jacob shows up it's a matter of instant attraction, sex, each character realize they are falling for the other, but instead of communicating they just keep getting mad at each other and/or pushing each other away, until finally Thomas tells Jacob to grow up, Jacob realizes that even perfect couples fight, and these two finally get their shit together.
Now, the thing that really killed this book for me was the epilogue. I don't believe in redemption for homophobic family who've don't nothing to deserve it. Daniel's father is the only one who bothered to even call him in the decade since kicking him out and that is only to belittle him. He never apologizes, but I guess money makes up for being a piece of shit. And Daniel's mother had a decade to reach out to him and didn't, but as soon as she does, all is forgiven. Screw that shit, let them rot.
**** Daniel and Jacob were best friends in school growing up, now years later, they meet again under rough circumstances. Daniel, 26, a big, broad muscled horseman, owns his ranch that he struggled and saved to aquire, but times are hard and he can't pay the bills. In comes Jacob, 25, fit and handsome, and businessman Lewis, both investors, who want to buy the ranch and develop it. Jacob had left town after he was severely injured in a horse riding accident, and is now newly out of his wheelchair. The men are not getting along at first, because Daniel's whole life is going down the drain, and Jacob is stable and has money. Daniel is plagued by his cruel homophobic father and family, and very alone in the world and the small town. Daniel relents and the men go to dinner, talk and kiss, which flares up their latent emotions into a raging fire.
Will we get a second chance romance ? What happens to the sale? Where will Daniel and his prize-winning horse go? ENJOY !
I wish that the author had taken the time to develop this sweet short. Dan and Jacob fell in love on sight which was alright considering their past. Jack was very unbelievable though.
Jacob lost everything he loved as a child. Now he is walking again and is a smart and forceful businessman. Keeping an eye out around his hometown, he sees an opportunity to make a ton of money. Dan owns the ranch that Jacob has an eye on. Once best friends, Dan lost contact with Jacob when Jacob went to live with his sister to go to college. Loosing his home once before because of his parents homophobia, he is loosing it again, but now to the bank. The two meet and get a second chance to become friends again and maybe more...or will they? Will Jacob's ambition take everything that Dan has fought for all these years? Will Dan let old hurts cloud his mind so they he can't or won't listen to his heart. An excellent second change romance an I would recommend it to anyone to read. I voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC book
When they were kids, Danny and Jacob were best friends, inseparable, always plotting mischief. But a horrible accident separated them. Jacob had to leave his home for medical treatment in the city. And Danny stayed, not knowing what had happened to his best friend. Years later, they meet again, but they are no longer friends, but rivals. Can they regain their friendship before their rivalry destroys it altogether? Can they be more than just friends?
Jacob is stubborn, does not like to ask for help. And he offers it without expecting anything in return. With Danny, he's found something that money can't buy. Love. He feels good in his arms. He doesn't feel useless, worthless. I didn't like him pretending not to know Danny, but then he didn't want to be anchored to the past. As they spend time together, he can't deny him. His friendship, his company. Danny has helped him find the courage to overcome his fears.
Danny is like Jacob. Stubborn, he doesn't give up. He has suffered too much. Jacob's main injuries are physical. Danny's are not visible, they are in his heart. It's hard to reveal that you're different, that you're gay. He couldn't even do it, he was robbed of that possibility. And his family, instead of accepting him, cruelly rejected him. He was beaten, insulted. It's normal that he doesn't trust himself, that he thinks he can't do anything right. It's normal that he has doubts, that he can't believe in Jacob's love. But Jacob does believe in him, in what they have. He just wants a chance to show it to him.
Their romance ... Their reunion didn't start off on the right foot. Danny was glad to see him, Jacob said he didn't recognize him. But they gave each other another chance, they spent time together. For Jacob it was hard, because he felt that he betrayed his best friend with his actions. And for Danny ... He was afraid of suffering as he did years ago. He couldn't afford to fall in love. And he couldn't afford to lose him. He feared to be by his side, he feared to fight for him, but at the same time he wanted to do it. He thought he hated Jacob, he missed him.
I suffered for the both of them. I wanted them to have a happy ending. I loved their romance.
I loved Thomas. The voice of reason, the one that gives Jacob the push he needs.
I hated Jack, and I regret that there are people like him, who are unable to accept people, who do not see the good in others.
i read this book as part of an arc program. This is the second chance romance between childhood friends Jacob and Dan. Dan is a rancher who owns the Breakaway Ranch, but it is failing and he is about to lose everything. Jacob is from the same hometown where the ranch is, but he lives in Chicago with his sister and brother-in-law Thomas. Jacob and Thomas own a property development company where they buy properties about to be foreclosed on and develop them as subdivisions. Jacob hasn't been back to town since he broke his back in an accident and he refuses to go visit his family at there farm. When Jacob and Thomas go to make an offer on the Breakaway Ranch, Jacob is shocked to see Dan. Dan recognizes Jacob after a few minutes and asks where he disappeared to and why. Jacob refuses to tell him about his accident and says he just wants to buy the ranch. Dan doesn't know what to do, his family disowned him because he is gay and his father continues to call him to tell him he is a failure and he is going to hell because he's gay. When Jacob and Dan talk, Jacob tells him about his accident and Dan kisses him. They go out and have a great connection. They begin to see each other, but Dan knows Jacob is leaving after buying his ranch, leaving Dan homeless. Jacob is confused about his feelings and Dan refuses to talk to Jacob about his feelings. I really enjoyed this book, I thought it was emotional and heartbreaking at times. I really thought Jacob wanted to be with Dan, but Dan was hurt in his past. Dan's family were horrible and i thought he was better off away from them, even if he was hurt by no contact. Good one.
California author JP Oliver continues to grow as an author of M/M romances. He is unafraid to tackle difficult subject matter in presenting his well-conceived characters – a factor that makes his resolution of sensitive traits all the more exceptional.
RIDE ON deals with the effect of trauma – physical and emotional – on the lives of two childhood friends. After a horse riding accident resulting in a broken back and severe nerve injury, Jacob moved to the city for multiple surgeries, gaining enough perseverance to become a successful businessman despite being confined to a wheelchair. Dan, his closest childhood friend, stayed behind in Breakaway Ranch and his sexuality became a problem with his family, leaving him destitute. Jacob returns to Breakaway Ranch as a financial resource and the two walk the plank of reuniting – growing from the experiences of the past and forming a solid bond of support and love.
Excellent characterizations, both of the leading two men as well as the families of both, help propel this fine story. The broken spirits rise and the ending is satisfyingly both erotic and resolved. This is very solid book by an author whose impact is being felt.
This was a really cute and sweet story and I really enjoyed the story. An old friend comes back into town and takes Dan by surprise by wanting to buy his farm and then sparks fly and old feelings come back between the two but Dan knows it cant last with his old friend jacob since he is due back to return to the city soon and was just there on bussiness.Dan had his heart broken and refused to have it broken again especially by his childhood bestfriend.Thos felt like a second chance typ of romance.Jacob left town after a really bad accident and came back on bussiness but ended up running into the guy he always held at the back of him mind but didnt think they could just pick up where they left off. They were both different now and at different places in their life and Danny wasnt going to let his guard down so easily this time. I really enjoyed both characters and felt I could really connect with each. This was a pretty quick read for me. I cant wait to read more from this author!

Jacob is a property developer and his next potential project will not only bring him lots of money, but also back to his hometown. Daniel is estranged from his family and is about to lose the ranch he put everything into. Jacob and Daniel grew up together as friends and seeing each other after so many years is bittersweet. They feel a spark of attraction but they also have a conflict of interest. This is a great, well written story with likable characters and an interesting storyline. It offers a roller coaster of emotions, friends to enemies to lovers, a nasty Dad, tragedy, passion, love, and HEA. I enjoyed this story but it feels like ther should be more to the end. Why did Jacob not visit his parents? What will they do with the ranch? What about Jacob's job?

Jacob has been in a wheelchair for a long time. He was told he would never walk again, he proved them wrong. Jacob uses the chair when he has no energy left. Daniel was kicked out of his home at a young age. Daniel bought the property and built the Breakaway Ranch with his own hands. Jacob returns to his hometown to buy the Breakaway Ranch. Jacob and Thomas meet with Daniel in the property. Daniel realizes that Jacob was his best friend growing up but then disappeared. Jacob and Daniel meet a few days later and discuss the past and how things turned out. Daniel is upset and signs the contract to sell the Ranch to Jacob and then walks out. Will they realize their mistake and make it right? Will Daniel realize he wants to get to know Jacob better?

Their previous relationship was described first as: just neighbors and acquaintances (Dan went to Jacob's birthday party), then as neighborly friends who played by the creek together, then finally as tight as best friends. But they completely didn't recognize each other physically or by name at first. Jacob was all "Oh that Dan Stanton!" Like they could see Jacob's ranch from Breakaway Ranch and then Dan's family's ranch was on the other side of that. Which Dan Stanton did he think it was?
Things moved pretty fast, they were in love and moving in together in 2 weeks. And Jacob got over his horse phobia really quickly. Like I don't think just petting a horse is going to make you want to hop back on and ride it a few miles after becoming paralyzed from a horse-back riding accident.
The last thing Jacob expected to find when he went to his hometown to buy property was to boy now a man that was his first crush,Daniel(Danny) and it was his ranch he was buying. First he didn't remember but the more he thought about him, the memories returned and they were good memories. Then he kept feeling he needed to spend time with him after that kiss in the barn. So when Daniel called and invited him to dinner he agreed. What started as dinner turned into very hot and satisfying sex. Then he ran into Daniels father on the street and after that confrontation he had with him he could only wonder what Danny was going through all these years. After some misunderstandings on both parts they finally got their act together and now there's a wedding on the horizon. GOOD STORY!!!😘😘
Jacob broke his back and is struggling to stay out of a wheelchair permanently. He is in business with his brother-in-law, Thomas, flipping properties They are investigating a struggling horse ranch near where Jacob grew up. When they go to visit the ranch they discover it is owned by Jacob's childhood friend, Daniel.
Should Jacob follow his heart or his need to pay off medical bills? Can Daniel move away and still find purpose in life? Their struggle is painful but that only makes the HEA even more poignant.
Another wonderful book by an author who opens the hearts and minds of his characters and readers.

This is intense, heartbreaking and sweet. Danny and Jacob were best friends as children, until the day Jacob disappeared and left Danny heartbroken and alone. Now it's 13 years later, and Jacob has come to buy a ranch to redevelop. What he didn't know was that Danny owned it, or that seeing him would bring back feelings he'd thought he'd left behind. Danny is shocked to see Jacob after so long, but he still makes Danny's heart race. Jacob has been so coldhearted since he left this life behind so he's not sure why he feels the way he does. Danny's dad is a real piece of work, what an evil man. I loved this story. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Booksprout. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.
Jacob got thrown from his horse when he was young. Bizarrely, his folks never told anyone what happened or why he moved away. Not unexpectedly, he never rode again after that.
Danny was his best friend, and likely his first crush - but after Jacob moved away, he was alone, until he got involved with a somewhat creepy dude, who was a coward who blamed their romance on Danny forcing him.
Both had been burned.
As Danny says, per his homophobic father, you always have to get back on your horse.
Cowboy up boys!

I did enjoy this book. I felt that the characters were given a second chance but there was a lot of mis communication and avoidance. I hate even if it's in book form that people don't just let people live the lives they want to and love the people they want. There was a varied amount of feels in this book. I was disappointed in the ending I think there should have been more. What about parents and jobs and what's happening with the ranch. I liked the HEA but I wanted more of the ends tied up. I really liked both Dan and Jacob, and the second-chance aspect of the story was well handled even though neither of these former best friends ever knew that the other was in love with him as teenagers.
It's a tough plot to weave and this one, though pleasant in its outcome, was missing some filler. We really don't get what Jacob wants to do with his ranch other than an almost throw-away line early on that he was trying to develop an LGBT dude ranch. I believe it was his homophobic father, a detestable person, who slipped this out. But there was not real reasoning or development of what should have been a good back story.
In addition, the explanation of Dan's disappearance after a secret accident was handled in a similar way with not so much explanation of how he became such a real estate shark and how he and his partner got together to make their little fortunes.
The love story was torrid and then sweet so that the overall impression is one of compromise on all sides with a shockingly weird, but redemptive, ending.
The only thing better than a love story is a love story with horses. In this book, a cold hearted developer is thawed by a near destitute horse rancher whose land he wants. Both men are afraid to open their hearts, yet they cannot deny their feelings. The character development is lovely as the men learn to overcome their pasts and their fears. The writing was highly entertaining, as always with this rising star of the romance world. Very enjoyable read!

I received this book for free and am giving my honest and voluntary review
I found the book exposing a lot of homophobia and the effects it has on the ones it’s aimed at. A good job was done of Jacob’s family accepting his homosexuality where Daniel’s father beats him and forced him to run away at fifteen. When the two men meet up and Jacob barely recognizes Dan and Dan recognizes the changes in Jacob, they are not on good terms. The realization of their love for each other leads them to overcome hurdles and prejudices against them.
Ride On by J.P. Oliver is an m/m romance about Jacob and Daniel. Once friends, then strangers... now lovers. The story does a great job st keeping your interest and the characters make you want them to find a happy ending together. Misunderstanding, drama, sweet moments, sexy times... interesting and entertaining Overall, a very satisfying read.
I received an advanced reader's copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.
I loved the aspect of the back injury that Jacob suffered and that he knew Danny from his childhood. I loved the fast paced romance that built, even though I don't love an insta-love story. This didn't feel like it was too fast simply because of their past.
It was a great story, even if it felt like it ended kind of abruptly. I would have liked a bit more of an HEA or HFN. Overall, a really great read.
After I finished reading this story, I had to really think about whether or not I liked it. Both Jacob and Daniel have some obstacles to overcome and it is debatable who is screwed worse. The story telling is good, smexy in the right places and overall a nice second chance romance. I normally adore the author's books, but this one was just a little bit flat for me which is why I gave it 3.5 stars.

A generic childhood-friends-reconnect-and-become-lovers trope with gay characters. The premise is interesting but the execution is poor. Even giving a wide latitude for the fantasy aspect of any romance story, the resolution is just too implausible: the characters, as drawn, simply would not act the way they do in the denouement and epilogue given how they were depicted in every moment of the story prior to that.
I suggest skipping this one, even if you like J.P. Oliver's style.
Jacob gets hurt and proves the doctors all wrong about him never going to walk again. He goes in to business with his brother in law with buying home and places that is foreclosing and one property is the Breakaway Ranch and a guy named Dan owns buy is late making a payment and fixing to lose it

this ranks as a great one. the storyline, the backdrop with all the history and how Jacob and Danny overcome the past, it is fun to read. Throwing in the estranged family and their feelings really bring it to reality.

Jackob trades in properties and makes a big profit. When he dedides to buy a property in his old town, Jackob meet his old friend Dan. Dan is having finansial problem when Jackob shows up to buy him out. Sparks flies between them, a few issues and love makes the rest of the story hot. A very cute love story.

This book was a light and enjoyable read. I felt the plot was nice and solid with likable main characters. The narration was very good and a new to me narrator.
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.
