The most unrelenting evil of all is the one which believes itself good. An unintended evil stalks the land, gathering countless victims to itself as it extends its reach; an evil born of the noblest intentions gone horribly awry.

After it claims his only remaining family, young Kelwyn vows to track it down and end it, no matter the personal cost. With little more than hope and a promise, he sets out on a journey whose end lies shrouded in uncertainty. He knows he cannot win, but he will not, cannot stop. Before his journey is over, he will discover places he’s only heard of from rumor and legend, and face terrors from the past he once thought long gone.

From mountain holds to arid deserts, his vow drives him inexorably toward the final confrontation to save his family. But in the end, will the cost be too high?

From an undisclosed source who prefers to remain anonymous:

G. David Walker was unexpectedly born in the summer of 1963, the obvious result of alien visitation, as his mother had been told she was unable to have any more children a decade prior to his arrival. This conclusion was only reinforced by David’s obsession with Star Trek and The Monkees, nights spent staring at the stars overhead, and uncountable hours reading science fiction and fantasy while other children were outside playing tag and running into trees. (Actually, it was David who ran into the tree, but that’s another story.)

Fortunately, David outgrew these tendencies…
Well, no. No, he didn't

He is still obsessed with Star Trek (and Star Gate, Star Wars, Jefferson Starship, star fruit, Dancing with the Stars, wait, what? Scratch those last two.), still enjoys staring into the night sky, and still reads science fiction and fantasy books and stories at every opportunity. Happily, we can report that there have been no reported incidents of him running into any trees lately (at least none that we’re aware of).

When he’s not trying to avoid trees, David writes fantasy and science fiction novels and stories, some of which may or may not be based upon odd memories...err...thoughts that pop up at irregular intervals throughout his day.

I received a copy of this book for free via Reedsy Discovery in exchange for my honest review, with thanks to the author and Reesdsy. This fact has not impacted upon my review at all.

Going into this book, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Despite fantasy books being amongst some of my favourites, this book seemed slightly outside of my comfort zone by its synopsis. Kelwyn, the younger brother of Donnell and Bevyn has to watch as his only family are enchanted by a blood lord named Jeron and taken for his service before they attempt to kill him. Escaping the flames they attempted to engulf him in, he strives to become the most skilled warrior for generations, slaving to learn three distinct combat styles within the four years following his brother's entrapment by Jeron. When he is ready for his quest for their freedom, he meets unlikely allies along the way, not only creating bonds with unlikely people but also battling against those who wish him ill. When he and his friend's reach Jeron however, they soon come to find they do not know the whole story of who Jeron is, what magic his sword possesses to entrap people to his service and soon realise that some things are beyond their control.

At its core, this is a story of loss. Kelwyn not only had lost his parents years earlier, but he lost his brothers, his home and his vision for his life. As a young teen, he had to leave everything behind to learn how to fight for their freedom. This is a story of love for family, not only through our main character and his brothers but through our side characters too, Garrion, a friend Kelwyn meets along the way has lost his father to Jeron's service and Ani, another friend, has lost her dear friend Dorin. This book aches with purpose and drivenness as each character explores the validity of each of their motivations for finding Jeron. It is bold and it leaves the reader with a sense of ease at the end of the book, a warm feeling perhaps knowing that when all seems lost, it truly isn't which is a nice diversion from the usual grimness that surrounds fantasy books at times.

The one note of critique I have surrounding this book would be at the beginning, I found it difficult to follow the timeline. It seemed that Kelwyn mastered things in days as opposed to years, but that would be my main note. The rest of the book was structured well and had a great flow. I would recommend this book to readers familiar with fantasy books as I think it does pose a more historical style to it which may be offputting to those new to the genre.

For a young adult fiction novel it was really good. The overall message was honorable, bold, and left me with a warm fuzzy feeling. The main character was easy to cheer for and relate to. I was thoroughly entertained throughout. The only thing keeping this from getting a 5 star rating from me was the lack of background on the different groups of people and individuals. Otherwise I highly recommend this book as well as everything else by this author.

I loved this story all the way to the end and the ending surprised me. There was some great action, I really enjoyed the training sequences.
Kelwyn's journey was epic and kept me entranced for the entire length of the book. His desire to save his brothers kept him moving forward all the time through a lot of brutal training and traveling through many different dangers towards his goal. I found myself agreeing with many of Kelwyn's decisions and drive AKA stubbornness.
I enjoyed the sidekicks' obstacles and opportunities they provided.
I award 4.9 stars to Redemption's Edge!

Feel good YA fantasy with positive messaging about family and good vs evil.

Listened on audio, the narrator did an excellent job.

This book has some of my favorite tropes from the Lord of the Rings (cursed object) Eragon (hero’s journey & hodgepodge of friends) and Wuxia (not a book but a Chinese film genre focusing on honor and righteousness)
