A clan of drug pushers. A high-profile hostage. To track down his target, he’ll cover the mountains in blood.
As a former federal agent, Porter does his best work outside the law. So when his friend from the FBI calls in a favor with a hefty reward, Porter heads straight for the heart of the Appalachians. Since by-the-books tactics failed to bring home an agent’s abducted daughter, Porter gets free reign to crack skulls and take names while the agency looks the other way.
Deep in the heart of the mountains, Porter matches wits and muscle with rowdy bikers, money-hungry dealers, and a vicious Mexican cartel. As the chase for the kidnappers kicks into high gear, he’ll need to strike fast to secure his payday...and save the hostage’s life.

This mystery series features former federal agent Porter. He now works as a private investigator, mostly seeking missing children. Porter is a no-nonsense investigator. Since he is not a government official, he uses is private status to bend and even break the rules when it comes these investigations. Strong-arm tactics are a mainstay in his investigative methods. His primary concern is finding the child not in maintaining a well-documented evidence trail for eventual prosecution. He is certainly a man of action who willingly faces personal danger, so there is plenty of action, suspense and tension in this story.
Nothing special about the storyline, just a well written tale about an off the books investigator and trouble shooter who does things his own way. Meth dealers/kidnappers don't stand a chance.
Enough violence to satisfy the action junkie. And, of course, in the end Porter is going to prevail and get the retribution.
Porter as he prefers to be called is an ex-FBI Agent, now freelance vigilante and problem-solver-extraodinaire-for-hire, in the mould of Jack Reacher, in R.A.McGee's excellent Porter Novel series' 2nd book.
Despite enemies ranging from corrupt local law-enforcement, a biker gang, a family of rednecks trying to make a fast fortune, (by cooking meth in the backwoods) to a vicious Mexican cartel's hit squads, Porter is indefatigable in seeking an FBI Agent's missing young daughter.
Was she in the wrong place at the wrong time? Who is the unlikely person who helps her? Who is Dusty and what is unusual about him?
When Porter's in town, the bad guys had better watch out - he'll have one eye on the prize and the other on a certain cute waitress - until the trail heats up and then he's 100% business...do or die!

This book is as good as the first one, and that one kicks ASS!!!! THANKS FOR WRITING THE PORTER BOOKS R.A. McGee is my new favorite author. I read a LOT. And I don't waste my short life reading crap BOOKS. There are lots of them out there, but I'm happy to tell all fans of good writing that this one is fantastic and worth your valuable time. Okay I am on to the third one. I know I'm going to enjoy it. No doubt. I just hope that more books featuring Porter are being written as you read this review. Only five stars are available or I would rate it ten!!!
I belong to lots of Advanced Reader's groups, but none deliver like McGee. The action is non-stop and superbly choreographed, the suspense is tense and gripping, and the MC that goes simply by the name of Porter is a 'large brown guy' that will steal your heart. His moral compass only knows black and white, and heaven forbid you fall into his dark side. The editing is clean, there's a fast moving plot, and each story is a stand-alone novel. If you're looking for a hero look no further.
The protagonist, Porter, is an interesting mix of hero and vigilante. In this tale, he is particularly vindictive, not without cause. Almost too black-and-white (no pun intended) in his views of justice, Porter opens the reader up to consider their own standards in this regard.
I’ll be interested to see how he develops in the next edition of the series.
This book was a good as the first one. The suspense and the twist in the plot gave it an edge. This was one amazing story. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
I admit I am kinda hooked on Porter. He's like a combination of Hawk, Joe Pike and Leonard Pine. Quick reads, with lots of action and he always saves the child. With today's headlines, it's nice to have a tough guy on their side.
But not much more. I wavered between three and four stars for this book. I thought the plot deserved a four. The pacing is good, the action is dramatic but not too over the top, and the story kept me reading. I finally decided on the three because the rest of the book didn't live up to its potential. Porter put me off so much at the beginning that I almost didn't get past the first few pages. He seemed obnoxious and arrogant for no particular reason. Eventually I mellowed toward him, but never really cared about what happened to him. He seems to me to be the stereotypical strong, silent, invincible comic book hero. The rest of the characters also could have stepped out of the same comic book. Would I read another in the series? I don't know, but I doubt it.
'Moving Target' was phenomenal. I loved the ironic tone the author created with the vivid details and the humorous way Porter, the protagonist and the man who got the job done, presented his POV throughout the tale. At most junctures, I liked the way dramatic irony was used which kept the reader somewhat ahead of the action until the twist towards the end. I saw something coming but not from the direction it came. The author gave the reader a thrilling ride. Although it was a mystery, it was a very entertaining and levity-filled narrative, and I liked it.
If your child went missing who would you want looking for them? If you're like me, then probably someone who didn't give a damn about rules, they just got the job done! Meet Porter, a man with a reputation for getting things done, for finding kids and not a lot of regard for the rules! This is a fast-paced, very enjoyable read where even though I knew where it was going, the ride was great.
RA McGee has a solid hit on his hands with the Porter series. I just recently discovered these and love them. Porter is a very rough guy who gets things done for good people and he doesn’t worry too much about what it takes to reach that conclusion either. Great story, good thriller type of book. Pick it up and it’s hard to put down. Highly recommend this one!
Excellent and fast-paced thriller as the first one in Porter series was. This story is cast in North Carolina and deals with a little girl (daughter of an FBI agent) being held hostage by a group of Meth drug producers dealing with a Mexican Cartel. Porter manages to rescue the 13-year old girl. Quite a bit of surprise in who was involved in al the drug-related issues happening in the little town. Can’t wait to read the third book in this series.
I would have given this book 3.5 stars if there was a way to do so. I must say that I read this book without reading the first one in the series; perhaps that would have moved my rating up to 4 stars. The protagonist is something like a black (or as he would say, brown) Jack Reacher. That is, a big, tough guy who solves problems. I found the book to be a pretty fast read (i.e., it was enjoyable) and I can see continuing with the series.
Moving Target was a fun read. I like the plot and storyline. Porter is an ex FBI agent who is asked to help in a missing child case. He runs into low-level drug pushers, the cartel who wants their drugs, a no-good Sherrif and his wanna-be-cops, and a lot of cover-ups. He has to find his own leads and somehow try and make sense of all the crazy twists and turns. He finds the bad guys and the girl and shoots his way out of trouble. Porter has no problems getting rid of the drug pushers. I'd like to read more in this series and by this author.
Good fast read main character is split between psychopath and sympathetic hero would be better if gratuitous violence were toned down. liked the ending with outlaw girl but getting rid of the sheriff in such an inhumane way was without merit even if it expeditiously finished up the hanging chads of the plot.
Fantastic read, characters and storyline. FBI’s daughter had been kidnapped for something she saw she shouldn’t nor should she of been where she was. Long time finding her with amazing things going on in between her missing and being found. Definite must read to find out all the good parts
Wow! Fellow readers, if you're looking for top notch entertainment, hard core violence, a bit of tugging on your heart strings and an addictive page turner, this is it! Couldn't wait to get to the end but didn't want to stop the excitement! Amazing!
First, but certainly not the last book by R.A. McGee. I think I've found my new favourite character. Porter just had to get the job done. No matter who, what, when or why! You get a little of everything in his adventures. If your looking through what's available to read. Don't pass the chance of R.A. McGee. Believe me, it's so worth it!
A real kick ass story. High action. Porter is a man who is well trained to handle had guys. He does so in this book and saves a young girl. How he does this is where the action occurs. He has a little love action going on also. I highly recommend this book.
Really great read. Non stop action. Couldn't put it down.cannot wait to read more. It's like several stories coming together around the single theme of the kidnapping.
The ending was great and fitting. One thing I like about any book I read is when my attention is captured in the first chapter.
Porter is a tough character with his own set of morals. In this story, he does a favor for an old friend and looks into the disappearance of a young girl. Along the way, he finds a modicum of romance, some good burgers, and a drug cartel. Nothing mind-bending here, just good mystery-thriller storytelling.
This is a guy who just keeps growing in you. Determined to get to the truth whatever it may be. With a crooked Police Department, rednecks trying to rip off biker gangs and cartels tied in with kidnapping account girl, wow! Plenty to keep Porter on the go. A good fun read leaving you wanting to read the next book.
The story moved along. No 3 or 4 pages of mundane things that really is it related to the story. I have given up books because they have to much filler. Page after page of what they wore or getting ready to go somewhere. The book was full of suspense. Getting ready to Rough company.
Want to read a book without having to mentally edit it as you go? This one’s for you.
It’s been edited and proofread just like all the good books used to be. As a bonus, you get a great protagonist with an excellent and fast-paced storyline.
I was very lucky to find this Porter series by Mr. Mcgee. It is action packed with a hero who definitely could go toe to toe with Jack Reacher. These are fast paced reads and keep you on the edge of your seat. Highly recommended.
“Not Mr. Porter. Just Porter.” A simple ex-Fed who is now a Private Investigator, the big man takes on Mexican Cartel, red-neck bikers and drug traffickers. Well worth the reading.
A very satisfying action thriller that almost reads itself. A spare, no nonsense style and thoroughly believable characters, even the bad guys (and girls). I am looking forward to more of the same from this author.
