Mobsters are like politicians, but more honest.

A family trip to the museum goes sideways for Erin O’Reilly when a drugged, disoriented young woman stumbles into her on the street. The girl pleads for help and leads Erin to a parked car, where a man lies dead of an apparent drug overdose. A simple investigation quickly derails when the victim turns out to be the son of a prominent politician. The grieving father, locked in a tight reelection struggle, doesn’t want to cooperate with the police. Soon Erin finds herself embroiled in political backstabbing and under-the-table dealing.

To make matters worse, she’s also running afoul of the darker politics of the New York underworld. While she and her lover Morton Carlyle slowly build their case against the Irish Mob, Erin confronts notorious Mafia underboss Vinnie “The Oil Man” Moreno, trying to find the links between the Mob’s drug trade and a death that has begun to look more and more like an assassination. Erin will need her wits, street smarts, and her K-9 Rolf’s sharp nose and relentless drive if she’s going to unravel this conspiracy.

Exciting reading

What wonderful stories. I’ve gone thru 13 books, one after the other and can’t wait for #14. Erin is what you wish every cop to be and her romance with Carlisle is handled beautifully.

Great Storytelling!

by Barbara Kelley

This is another great book in a series written by a great storyteller! Of course, my favorite characters are Erin and Rolf, but Vic Neshenko comes in a close third. I love the way he is always asking if he can dangle the bad guys out of a window by their feet. "I promise I won't drop him, Lieutenant!" But Lieutenant Webb won't let him. Darn the politics! My absolute favorite character is the K9 Rolf and how he loves chasing some bad guys and biting them when Erin gives the order. He's just a big doggie kid who's playing a game. He's a good boy and he knows it! He can even sull up and look pissed off with Erin when he gets hurt and winds up with a "cone of shame" and has to take off work for several days. Poor baby; he thinks he's done something wrong, and Erin wishes she could tell him why he needs time off. This episode is about a senator's son who is found dead with his pants down in the back seat of his car. A sixteen year old girl dressed and acting like a drugged up as a hooker runs into Erin. She keeps talking about a man who is dead in a car. Erin finds the body, and she and Neshenko begin their investigation into the Manhattan political scene. Beware, the death is not what it appears to be. Why was the senator's son murdered? Was it an accident, a mistake, or a deliberate act? I gave this book 5 stars, but would have given it more if they were available.

Highly satisfying.

How I enjoy Steven Henry’s Erin O’Reilly series! It is pretty straight forward even if the homicide isn’t. For me it is just enough action, not over-the-top tension, enough New York and cop material to satisfy without lots of unnecessary verbiage. Erin struggles with ethical dilemmas of undercover work, Vic wants to catch the bad guys and Rolf wants to run them down. All kinds of gray areas with law, justice and who are the bad guys at times that keep it real.

Never a dull moment.

Even though a few months have between book 12 and 13, the story continues to pull me in. Good pacing and hook ending.

I really enjoy the stories about Erin, Rolf and Cars
They are well written and are hard to put down.
I hope more books are coming about them.

Always a delight to curl up with Erin, Rolf, Cars and the rest of the gang. In this, book 13, Erin is finally in deep with the Irish mob. Well, more like ALL the mobs, and I for one am a nervous wreck for her. You know how you care about a character and you think, RUN AWAY. Of course there's be no story.
While walking to the store with her sister-in-law and niece and nephew for ice cream, Erin spots a sloppily dressed young woman who is obviously impaired. When Erin goes to her aid, she is led to a car and the dead body of a young man. Whose father is Senator Martin Ross, who is running for reelection. And may be mobbed up.
Before Erin and her team can start working on the murdered man's case, she has something even harder to do--endure dinner with her brother, sister-in-law, and Cars.
That's all I have for you. Get reading! I'm on to #14.
