Subprimeval

Something is stalking the citizens of Wichita, Kansas, in the dead of night. Random missing people, homicides presumed to be carried out by deranged family members, and the drastic decline in the homeless population were first thought to be non-related occurrences. But after an unpopular rookie cop is given a dead end assignment, the pieces of this bizarre puzzle start to come together.

As a midwesterner, it was especially exciting to see how this title expanded beyond Wichita over time to also include Minnesota and other locations, but what kept me captivated was the side characters. The main characters are unique and very engaging as well, but every single side story with someone encountering the...evil in the book, which I wouldn't want to spoil, is just riveting. You feel like you're given this glance into the lives of people all across the states, getting to know them, and often loathe them, and then...in many cases...they're gone, but you feel more fulfilled for having seen their story. I loved every second of this book, and look forward to more tales of horror from Cutler. It gave me chills, made me glance nervously out my windows at night, and was just flawless in atmosphere and characterizations.
