Running Strong

A story about running away, crashing through and hitting my stride

When the whole world seems set against you, how you keep the negative voice out of your head?

Candice Warner knows all about the damaging consequences of living life in front of the cameras and has learned a lot about how to insulate from the worst of public life - for herself, as a wife and partner, and as a mother. Growing up with, competing in and living among some of the most abrasive environments, Candice has had her integrity attacked, her worth questioned, and her decisions, body and mind judged. But she has never been stronger or more determined to forge the space she and her family need to be safe, and to live a life filled with love, purpose, ambition and optimism.

Candid, raw and uplifting, Candice tells it straight - about the ugly, bruising pivotal moments that almost broke her, to the extraordinary turning points that buoyed her ... and the saving grace of the transformative, regenerative power of running.

From her beginnings as Australia's youngest Ironwoman and the joys and heartbreak of elite sport, to being publicly shamed as a woman, and her crucial role in Australia's most successful and highest profile partnership, Running Strong is Candice's story - about climbing back from rock bottom, the power of creating precious sanctuary for yourself and protecting the people closest to you.

I actually enjoyed it the most when it was just her talking about her own iron women career and her love and beginning of that sport in Maroubra and school, I really started zoning out when it just became a love letter to David Warner for the last two thirds, I mean it's your book and a whole third is about Dave playing cricket. Leave that for his book.

Which I'm sure you don't want to talk about ex's in your own book that much. But she dated David Walliams from Little Britain etc who is one of the most famous men in the world and he doesn't even get mentioned once and Sonny Bill Williams takes up 30% of the biography chat.. it just flirts from warts and all to very cherry picked. Either go all in or all out.

I was unsure whether I would like this memoir or not. I must say I was pleasantly surprised at what an easy read it was, and just how strong Candice is. Given all the garbage and media hype that surrounds people in the limelight, whether sporting personalities or not, you never know if what you see, read or hear is accurate [usually its not]. I learned through this book, the importance of focusing on what is right, what matters most to you, and how strong you can be when you have to. I admire the courage and tenacity of both Candice and David given what they have been through, and just how much they love each other and their beautiful little girls shines throughout. Thank you Candice for sharing your story. May your family always continue to be as loving, fun and supportive of each other.

Before I read this book, I didn't know too much about the writer or cricket but I am a runner as well and I thought it looked interesting. The book ended up being one of all all-time favourites. Candice's writing style is frank and intriguing. She is brutally honest, and this makes for one hell of a story. As an Australian, I feel very sorry for the way she was treated by the media and cricket fans. An elite athlete herself, she deserved better. Women deserve better. It was fun to step inside the world of the elite surf lifesaver, cricket and another mother just doing the best for her kids. I loved it. Candice may be one of Australia's best athletes, a tv and radio personality but she can add terrific writer to her list. This is not a book just for cricket or surf sport fans, it is a book for all of us who have been bullied or suffered. Candice is a warrior.

Pretty awful unless you really really love stuff about sport esp. cricket and ironman/woman events. She carries on about how the media really gave her a hard time and how dreadful it was for her, but I’ve never heard of her, and I don’t remember ever ever hearing about her in the news. Talk about self-obsessed.

As a runner I enjoyed the parts about Candice and her dedication to sport. Then it somehow turned into a book about her husband and felt like she'd been swallowed by him and his life and their children.

I quite enjoyed this book. I do loosely follow the cricket , do I remember the ball tampering episode. It was quite interesting to hear the other side of the story and more about the people involved .

I score 3.75 for this book.

A three start read for this one.
Was great to read the other side of the ball tampering story and what they went thru.
Also the struggles, and how Candice over came them.
Not sure why, but I got into this about midway thru.

I absolutely loved this book. I heard Candice speak on the “Something to Talk About” podcast awhile ago and she was just so honest and raw, I knew I wanted to read this book. It also gives a view of the behind the scenes of the cricket world. A must read.

Hardly a credible read. A Tongan fan who doesn't mention that she enjoys their company.

Biggest piece of shite I’ve ever read. Just trying to stay relevant while her husband slowly declines in cricket. Biggest cash grab. 🤦‍♂️

An honest but mostly boring account of the author's Surf Lifesaving career and her marriage to David Warner.

As autobiographies go, this is one of the best. Candice isn't one of those writers who tells a glossy story, more suited to a publicity bio. Instead, this is a raw and complicated story that is beautifully told. It will intrigue everyone but more importantly, presents some good life lessons that we can all benefit from. A strong, brave and interesting book.

It was interesting to gain an insight into Candice’s life and the inner strength and resilience she showed when things went to crap.
