"From nothing to nothing is no time at all." (John Steinbeck)
Two men discuss their New Year's resolutions shortly after midnight on December 31, 2014. The discussion is inspired by a piece of minimalist piano music by Steve Reich and turns to the meaning and nature of time, drawing on John Steinbeck's famous quote. The story is fictional but is augmented by a notes section expanding on several of the references in the book.
Jon Edgell lives in the wonderfully enlightened and unique city of Brighton, UK, and has interests in music, art, literature, travel and sport. He writes short stories for both children and adults, and articles and reviews for various websites and magazines including Viva Brighton where his "Resolution" won the Flash Fact Short Story Competition in February 2015.
While I certainly agree with the author that this is a very short story, it is also an excellent short story. However, does it really belong in the Science and Math category? Should that not be reserved for non-fiction books? Despite the title, this little ditty never claims to be anything but fiction.
This is an amazing introduction to where Jon will be taking us on his upcoming short stories that he plans to write. His thoughts and perception on quantum physics and time as it is perceived as vertical and horizontal invites the reader to question their own experience of time. The story is short and I particularly like the lines “Time flies when you are having fun or drags when you are bored, but perception of time in our memory works the opposite way, so a year spent traveling seems longer in memory than a year at the office. Time becomes meaningless without memory and we humans have a unique consciousness that allows us to live in the past or in the future" and "Being fully present in the moment, that’s true quality time" because there is such a profound truth to what he has written here. I personally find the study of quantum mechanics and metaphysics fascinating and how it makes one question their experience here on earth. I feel that this book has been a crack in the door that will lead his readers to a lot of mind expansion and personal growth through a deeper understanding of time and the quantum possibilities of a spirit having a human experience.Time is a man made concept, nothing more....but it is the strongest chains that keep man bound.
This short story is a little hard for me to review--even though I've been reading mostly short works lately, this one is shorter than most as it's considered flash fiction. It's a story or an "essay" on time, and I ended up reading it twice to make sure I could fully grasp what the author was conveying.
It's definitely the type of story that gets the wheels in your brain going! The line that stood out to me the most was this one: “Time flies when you are having fun or drags when you are bored, but perception of time in our memory works the opposite way, so a year spent travelling seems longer in memory than a year at the office." How true is that?
This thought provoking piece won't take you long to read, but you will still be thinking about it even after you're finished.
This short story/essay is filled with intriguing concepts such as physics and time. It's very short, but the ideas will linger in your mind long after you've finished reading it. Highly recommended for anyone interested in these subjects.
