For the last 10 years, 19-year-old Eleanora Svobodová has worked as a servant in her stepmother's household. Along with her older brother, she dreams of the day they will be free to live life on their own terms.
But everything changes when their estranged grandmother comes to Prague on behalf of Queen Victoria.
Throughout Bohemia, a string of murders and secret whispers hint at a larger coup. As the leader of the Order of the Crystal Daggers, an ancient order of spies and soldiers that protect kingdoms and their rulers, Lady Penelope is determined to discover the perpetrators. Now, Eleanora must make the choice between a life of intrigue and saving the lives of others.
Can Eleanora find a way do the right thing and still find freedom?

The first half of „Kingdom of Ash and Soot“ was absolutely amazing and I was so invested in the story, I couldn’t put the book down anymore. Back in high school, I always hated history classes but ever since passing my a-levels and leaving school, I’ve become more and more interested in history and have also found out that I actually really enjoy reading historical fiction. As a European, I of course am particularly interested in European history and so the fact that this book was set in Prague back in 1870 made it even more interesting to me.
An important part of every story certainly are the characters and I really liked them. Eleanora, the female protagonist, was a little annoying sometimes, especially towards the end of the novel, but I still liked her. But my favorite character was definitely Ferdy, one of Eleanora’s love interests, who was funny and interesting and stole my heart quite quickly.
Another very positive thing about this book was C.S. Johnson’s writing style. “Kingdom of Ash and Soot” was very well written and you could clearly see that she already has quite a lot of experience when it comes to writing books and I’m definitely interested in checking out some of her other work now.
But even though the first half of the book was definitely worth five stars, the story kind of lost its momentum after the half-way point and I began losing interest in it. I started struggling with trying to understand what exactly the Order of the Crystal Daggers was trying to do in Prague and how everything was interconnected. There were a lot of different characters mentioned when the order began trying to figure out why and how so many people had been murdered and I quite quickly lost track of who is who and what kind of role they played in Prague or Europe in general back then which sadly tarnished my reading experience.
All in all, this book started out strong but then lost its momentum and so I decided to give it 3.5 out of 5 stars. I do not yet know if I’m going to read the next part of the series even though the book ended with a very interesting twist and a freaking cliffhanger. But I think the next book hasn’t even been announced yet, so I still have some time to figure out if I’m actually interested in finding out what happens next or if it’s just a momentary thing.
A beautiful historical setting invites you to a bohemian adventure of a servant girl blossoming to a fierce and dagger-wielding protagonist with a rightful place in society.
Eleanora Svobodová’s father has passed away, and ever since, she and her brother have been serving at the house for her stepmother without question albeit not without dreaming of a free future. One day, Eleanora is heading into town with two special books from her father’s collection she is going to sell. There, in the streets, she is robbed of one of the books, and in her effort to regain it back, she meets a young man offering her his help and aid. He takes her to an antiquity dealer and from there, an honest friendship develops. Not one without a flutter in the chest, but one that will be tested later for its meaning of truth.
Shortly after, her estranged grandmother Penelope comes to Prague on behalf of Queen Victoria. She is the leader of the Order of the Crystal Daggers, an ancient order of spies and soldiers that protect kingdoms and their rulers. She will be staying in Eleanora’s home and it changes her entire status against the stepmother's will.
There have been several murders around town, and in exposing a larger coup, Eleanora is told that her own mother was part of the Order of the Crystal Daggers, and is asked to help in the uncover. First, Eleanora’s entire wardrobe will be upgraded and dance lessons added. Penelope counts on her youthful beauty to infiltrate the high society and gifts her a dagger that used to be her mothers. Eleanora is sought out by many of the men in power, but she keeps thinking of the charming young man in the streets. As fate has it, she will meet him again and a beautiful, sweet romance is beginning to bud. But later, everything both of them know of each other will be tested. With a job to finish in exposing the perpetrators, Eleanora has to put any feelings aside and put herself in a dangerous situation.
A cliffhanger awaits at the end of the book, leaving the reader wanting for more romance and adventure to find out about Eleanora’s choices and future ahead.

This book was atmospheric, lovely and action-packed. I enjoyed the sweet romantic banter in it, as well as the historical added details of the time and place. Parts of the plot made me wonder how this was going to end while Eleanora encountered different situations. It had me guessing till the last pages which made the story just fly by. The writing was crisp and interesting with just the right amount of tension.
If you enjoy a historical fiction setting and YA books, then I’d definitely recommend this great YA read :)
ARC provided by Prodigy Gold Books & C.S. Johnson in exchange for an honest review - thank you so much!
Throughly enjoyed this a beautifully written Cinderella/Spy story by C.S. Johnson - was such a vivid and fantastic adventure.
”The devil always offers you everything you want, but there is always a price to pay. Always.”
It was a slow burning plot and very character driven but it was so good! The descriptions and writing really made you feel like you were there with the characters in Prague in the 1870s. Also had the really nice edition of using Czech throughout the novel for family or pet names - this detail really added to the atmosphere of the book for me.
I fell in love with Nora and Ben they’re definitely a great pair! They were left in quite an unfortunate situation working as servants in their own home after both their parents tragically died. They don’t enjoy this life and all they wish to do is save up and leave their evil stepmother and her children and own their own bookstore. Their life suddenly changes though when the most unexpected person arrives...and everything goes off in quite a different direction.
There’s mystery and cunning throughout this book and defiantly some laughable moments as well as heartbreaking ones. The characters were incredibly likeable - I loved Ferdy and Tulia, definitely would love to see more of them! Lady POW well there’s lots I could say about her but it’s best to experience that yourself! ”She has the face of a lady, but wore the smile of a viper.”
A fantastic read which had me guessing so much - I really liked the spy element...and that cliffhanger, wow well I can’t wait to see what happens next in this series!
Hi again, everyone! This is my upcoming novel, published through Prodigy Gold Books, and it's my editor's favorite so far, and I can think of no higher praise considering she's seen the worst of my work. I hope you enjoy it!
Here's the blurb I've written:
“I want to be free.” The words came rushing out of me before I could think through their implications and consequences.

I received an advanced copy of the from the publisher in exchange for my honest review. This book was so intriguing. I really enjoyed watching Elenora go from a maid to a lady, as she was mean to be. The Cinderella vibe along with the spy part of it is very neat. I like the 2 love interests, esp Ferdy and did not predict the twist. I can’t wait to see what happens next. It does end in a cliffhanger
I was sent this book from the publisher in exchange for an unbiased review. (That happened like, a minute ago, and by a minute, I mean a few years--I hate myself, too.)
And I never got to the review because I couldn't even make it through the damn book. It's a real shame. Honestly, I liked the premise, but 90% of what I read was dialogue--no real world-building, nothing to make me feel connected to the story, just dialogue upon dialogue.
I liked the premise, but the characters didn't feel interesting enough to read THAT MUCH dialogue. Also, it became apparent about half-way through that there were some concealed religious themes that I didn't know were going to push the story forward in the way they did....
Again, I'M SO TIRED OF FEELING GUILTY WHEN I SEE THIS ON MY "CURRENTLY READING" LIST WHEN I LOG IN. I can't handle it.
I'm sorry, this just wasn't my jam.
But it may be someone else's JELLY.
Okay, that was bad imma see myself out without rating this book, since I didn't technically finish it.
This story was fantastic! Definitely one of my favorite reads of this year!
It was packed full of political intrigue, but not so much where it went over my head or was hard to remember. The Cinderella twist honestly made it even cooler and will forever look at her story differently, imaging if she became a secret, undercover spy.
The characters were just as amazing as the storyline. (Well, except the bad guys, but even they were "well played." Hehe!) Eleanora was such a great heroine to cheer for her and her grandmother was no different (though I do confess that my thoughts toward her changed slightly by the end). I also greatly loved Elenora's relationship with her brother and how close they were. Seeing him grow and change throughout the novel was so wonderful.
AND THE ROMANCE!!! *fangirls* It was perfect and my heart was pretty devastated by a certain event. I honestly can't wait to read book two and hope that the romance unfolds the way my heart is aching to see. *sighs*
Overall, this was such a fun and incredible story! I loved sooooo much about it and eagerly anticipate book two!
*I have provided an honest review after having received an ARC from the author. All thoughts expressed are my own and was not required to write a positive review.*
Ms. Johnson whisked me away to another world with her characters and magical location, Prague, mid-eighteen hundreds. The attention to detail brings to life a story rooted in the Cinderella tales, yet completely its own in form and substance. A secret international spy network and a mystery surrounding the deaths of several important men give the tale added dimensions as brother Ben and sister Eleanora are rescued from an evil stepmother only to be plunged into international intrigue.
Though I enjoyed the story, there are two reasons I couldn’t give this book five stars: First, even though this is basically a ‘clean’ read, it bothered me that several characters treat sex as fine outside marriage and as something to be used as a means to an end. Second, the book could really benefit from a good dose of formatting.
We received an ARC of this book from Prodigy Gold Books in exchange for an honest review. Thanks again, Prodigy Gold Books!
Overall Rating: 3 stars Heroine: Survivor by Destiny’s Child Dude: Can I go on walks with him in Prague!?? Romance: Sweet and slow burn Brutality: I’ll never trust wine again
This story is an interesting twist on Cinderella that adds in history, political maneuvering and assassins. If you love a good regency novel with multiple balls, discussions of what is proper behavior for young ladies, and a sweet romance then you’ll enjoy Kingdom of Ash and Soot. It’s a quick and easy read that adds in just the right amount of intrigue and mystery to keep you guessing.
The Setting Who doesn’t love a story set in Prague? Monsters, that’s who! I loved how this story didn’t take place in the typical European cities featured in historical fiction novels - Prague was a refreshing change of pace. The descriptions of Prague in 1870 are beautiful and heartbreaking. You’ll probably find yourself wanting to visit Prague Castle at Christmas and wanting to shake people for their anti-semitic views.
The Characters Like any Cinderella retelling you get the classic characters, Cinderella (Eleanora), the evil stepmother, and an evil step-sister. But Kingdom of Ash and Soot goes a step farther and gives you a creepy evil step-brother, and a solid brother character that you can’t help but love as well. Then Johnson adds in a somewhat insane Grandmother that can’t seem to learn her granddaughter’s name, a group of assassins, a friend group with a Zorro like character, and a bunch of plotting nobles.
Our main character Eleanora was likable but annoying and naive at times. I need a little more character growth from her in the next books. But who really made me rage in this book was her grandmother Lady POW. I wanted to POW her in the face multiple times and I can tell this chick is gonna be bad news throughout this story. Ferdy, our love interest, was sweet and I admittedly fell for him but ultimately he broke my heart at the end.
Pacing and Writing I enjoyed the mystery and intrigue present in Kingdom of Ash and Soot. But where this novel fell short for me was in the pacing. The book lost its momentum after a bit and was a little slow. I honestly thought I would drown in descriptions of ball gowns and rules for how to behave as a proper lady. I would’ve enjoyed a bit more action and a faster-paced adventure. The writing was pretty but I struggled to connect the dots between all the different plot lines and got lost between the political maneuvering in Prague and how it connected to the group of assassins from England. I would’ve enjoyed more explanation of that than ball gowns.
Overall Thoughts and Ending The ending was perhaps a little predictable to everyone except Eleanora who is a little naive but it was intense and enjoyable. I enjoy a good cliffhanger and this one did not disappoint! I’m intrigued enough by this book and the ending to give the next book in this series a chance!
you can find this review on my blog as well! --- I’d be lying if I said the cover wasn’t my main reason for wanting to pick up this book. But after reading the synopsis, I got some interesting Cinderella vibes, and, well.
I was sold.
Kingdom is not a retelling. It has some elements, definitely—an Ella working as a servant in her own home after her father passes, dancing amongst the elite, things like that. But it’s definitely not a retelling. Despite that, I was intrigued by the time period and the setting of the book. Prague! In 1870! With that and the addition of a secret organisation and deadly plots, Kingdom of Ash and Soot had a lot going for it.
Only. Only it didn’t quite live up to my expectations. Because in the end, I was bored. There wasn’t nearly as much action I wanted, I wasn’t sucked into Eleanora’s world, and I just… felt this odd detachment from everything. Johnson’s writing was really good, too! Despite that, I just wasn’t feeling this book. It definitely felt like an introduction to the world kind of book, which just kinda left my eyes glazed over.
… I also wasn’t a fan of the romance. I was hoping for the attraction to build up, kind of in a slow burn. Really, I just wanted more development before anything happened!
Overall, Kingdom of Ash and Soot was an okay start, if sort of unmemorable, start to a new series. While it had some interesting parts, it unfortunately fell flat for me. I am excited to see where book 2 takes Eleanora, though! So, 3.5 stars.
Wonderful read! And what an ending!! ( am so excited to see what happened I stayed up way to late to start the next book in the series!) This book, Kingdom of Ash and Soot, really allows you to follow Eleanora through her life, which in the last 10 years has gone downhill, but while on that downhill run she has made some unbreakable relationships, like her brother Ben and Tulia. Then when we meet her for the main part of the book her life seems to mostly improve, even though she makes a few mistakes and for some reason doesn't trust her gut instincts when it comes to men.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Kingdom of Ash and Soot is almost a Cinderella retelling but darker and more exciting. Set in an alternate 1800s Prague, Eleanora survives the deaths of her parents, strengthens beneath the abuse of her step-family, and rises in a world of magic and dark destiny. This YA Fantasy is a must-read for fans of adventure told at midnight.
I was given an ARC of this book and this is my honest review. If you have never read anything by C.S. Johnson, then this is a wonderful way to begin a wonderful relationship with a terrific author. From the moment Nora is introduced along with her brother Ben, I was hooked. Both characters are relatable and easy to like. The evil step-mother is just that - evil. Each new character that was introduced just made me want to get more lost in this world. Having the story set in Prague was a treat for me as I have visited there so many of the places are familiar. We all find our favorite character, and for me it was Ferdy. I fell in love with him immediately and thought I wouldn't find anyone more interesting. Boy was I wrong. My favorite person is Lady POW!! No spoilers here, you are going to have to get lost in this world of adventure and intrigue to find out who she is and what she has in store for Nora and Ben. Who is Karl? What is the Order and how is Nora involved? What of the evil step-mother, what indeed?? I truly loved this idea and the way it was unravelled. I could not get to the end fast enough, and then it was over. I can only hope this is not the last we hear of our heroes. Dive right into this world of mystery, adventure and love!! I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I did.
“I want to be free.” The words came rushing out of me before I could think through their implications and consequences.
Nora was a very easy character to fall in love with. It stays true to the typical Cinderella retelling, however Nora is a beast! She became stronger with her life that she was dealt and worked for something better, than accepting her fate!
This story just went somewhere completely different than I was expecting! The writing was well executed and it was a little hard to follow at times. I give 4🌟 for the story and 3🌟 for the writing. Some tones became redundant and could have been left out or added a little more to other aspects of the story, so overall-3.5🌟
Overall, it was a good read and thank you Prodigy Gold Books for the DRC! ❤️
Another read for the Indie Fantasy Bookclub! CS Johnson has written a lively YA tale of murder, romance, secret societies and political intrigue in nineteenth-century Prague that ALSO happens to double as a Cinderella retelling. This one is overtly written for a Christian audience, but I really loved the themes of power versus freedom, the breezy chemistry between the heroine and her highly lovable brother, and the glimpses caught of the (likely very highly fictionalised version of the) political situation in Bohemia at the time, which I didn't know anything about.
A must read......wow...what can I say. A great read that will get you hooked right from the start.
This first book in the Kingdom series is excellent. I love the character and the interaction they have with each other, and how they develop. There are so many different types of characters and personalities that you find you like and others not so much and some you like even more as you learn about them.
The twist and the turns in there and the final realization when things click and you ask yourself why you didn't see it sooner. I just wanted to keep on reading until I finished and I'm ready for the next one as I want to know what the next installment holds.
I love this story! It blends history and great storytelling together, along with a Cinderella vibe. Eleanora and Ben and Ferdy, and all the secrets and political intrigue was fantastically blended together. The ENDING THO! You’re going to want to have book 2 queued up on your kindle or in your possession. This story sucked me in immediately and didn’t let up. Can’t wait to read the next books!
I read this book as a favor to a friend, not expecting what I opened was going to be that good. For a work of historical fiction and with a good amount of romance and intrigue, I quickly became occupied in the web of events portrayed therein. It is now 2am the day after I began reading, this alone should tell you something of the quality of the text! A real page turner. From its funeral prolog, through its twisting plot, the main character Elanora pulls you in and keeps you reading cover to cover. I don't want to spoil any of the story here, but I know you'll enjoy every page turning moment!
I received a copy of this book to read and am so glad that I was given the opportunity to read it!
This book held me to the very end (I love stories like that so much!) I love how it brings in the dysfunction into the plot (a bit of reality mixed to make it more real to me. I enjoyed the way the words painted a story I could easily visualize, pulling me into the story too.
This is not the first book that I've read by CS Johnson, and will certainly not be my last!
This is my first-ever eARC and that is why this book will forever be etched on my memory. Thank you Prodigy Gold Books for providing me an advance copy of this book.
Kingdom of Ash and Soot is a tale of survival, mystery, lies, love, secrets and freedom. I was once again plunged into the mystical city of Prague for this historical fiction and the place still held its old magic which makes it perfect for a story such as this. Siblings Eleanora and Ben were stripped of the comforts of life when their parents perished at a young age and were reduced as servants to their stepmother, Cecilia. They knew their lives were about to change when their estranged grandmother appeared out of nowhere, but they weren't aware how much.
The establishment of the story was slow and deliberate. The talks of politics also confused me since I'm not really an expert at Prague's history. Nevertheless, if you are a history geek, you will find this story very amusing. Eleanora and Ben were very relatable and their character developments were astounding. The mystery that stitched the story together hooked me and encouraged me to flip the pages until the very end. The underlying romance was also commendable, and you will find yourself questioning if you are Team Karl or Team Ferdy. The story was predictable but the book is still a page-turner.
Anyway, I am excited for book two because I think that's where all the action will happen. I feel as if this first book is just a filler for the second book and I really want to know what will happen next. All in all, this book is good for people who are drawn to historical fiction and those who hunger for thrill and mystery.
This was a really interesting mix of themes. At first, I thought it would mainly play out to be a Cinderella story, but Nora/Ella isn't rescued from her stepmother just to leave a glass slipper on the prince's stairs. No, she's inherited a place in the Order of the Crystal Daggers, along with the danger and intrigue that goes along with it. My favorite part of this book, besides the gorgeous cover, was the rich historical detail. The author clearly knows her stuff. She did a fantastic job sending me into the world of 19th century Europe. I love history, so that was a complete bonus. The twist at the end of the book I did not see coming, and I'm usually pretty good at predicting plot twists. The book does end on a cliff hanger, which is fine by me. I like them. Definitely left me interested for the next book!
I have a lot to say about this novel. There is nothing bad to say for the first half of this story. The characters were strong and relatable, the story held my attention the entire time. The pace was perfect, and I flew through the chapters with ease. I had high hopes since the story is based in Prague. However, the last half of the story, I found that my attention wasn't held firmly the whole time. I will say though...the ending...GREAT, but leading up to that point, I was disappointed. I still give this story 4 out of 5 stars.
Kingdom of Ash & Soot is set in the past, 1870 in Prague. Eleanora is only 9 years old when the story begins and she is at her father’s funeral with her older brother, Benedict, her stepmom and her two step siblings who are spoiled and used to getting their way. Eleanora was very close to her father and mourns him the most whereas Ben didn’t share a good relationship with him and holds bitterness at the man’s memory. Their mom passed away years ago and their stepmother immediately makes them both part of the household staff.
It really feels like a re-telling of Cinderella except this time there’s a little twist. Lady Penelope enters their home 10 years later with no knowledge her two grandchildren exist. The scene where Penelope confronts Cecelia, their stepmother, and ruins her plans for the evening was one of my favorite scenes of the book. It turns out Lady Penelope is there on a mission, Eleanor and Benedict are intrigued and decide to join her.
There is very mild flirting with two different men, and in two scenes Eleanora passionately kisses one of the main characters.
One curse word in French. A mute woman makes obscene gestures, not graphic only mentioned and comes across as humor not offensive. Use of words wretch, bastard, blowhard and witch. Otherwise it’s “cursed under his breath” or “string of muttered curses.” Damned is used.
There is action-type violence, but the author does not describe anything in a graphic manner. There are two scenes in a bar, two mentions of sex and sexually inexperienced in conversation between grandmother and granddaughter. Grandmother also discusses how to use a woman’s body seductively as a spy to get information. These are conversations, nothing happens.
This quote is used in the summary but I liked it so much I used it again. “Very well then, Benedict, Eleanora,” Lady Penelope said. “I will tell you the truth. But it does not start, nor stop, with me. I must tell you about your mother and the Order of the Crystal Daggers.”
I was very intrigued by this and loved both Eleanora and Benedict’s characters from the beginning. They look out for one another, stand united in all things, and have great banter throughout the story. Benedict calls Eleanora, Nora, while two other men in the story call her, Ella. Lady Penelope keeps calling her Eleanor (her mom’s name) and keeps getting corrected. I really enjoyed how Eleanora’s name gets switched around so much.
“There are two things you need to know about yourself if you want to be free—what you stand for and what you stand against.” Lady Penelope held up her hands, brandishing a pair of daggers that had been hidden in her skirts. “This world lives enslaved to its destruction, and so long as you are fighting, you will be free.”
One of the main characters reminds me of Leo DiCaprio’s Jack character from the movie, Titanic. He knows how to handle himself.
Mention of Jews, Christians and Bohemians throughout the story as the characters investigate what danger is brewing and who is behind it. There are a few scenes of fights with the good guys and bad guys, one character gets injured with glass shards in her face and hands, but it’s not gory. There are two funerals in the story. One dead body is found in a church, nothing gory is described there. There is a fire set and one large explosion.
Ash & Soot really catches your interest in the first half of the story, it does slow down as we get see Eleanora in training from Lady Penelope in fashion, etiquette, and dancing. However, the intrigue and plotting doesn’t end and whenever Eleanora finds out more about her parents, she shares the information with Benedict as they both work to uncover lies and do the right thing. I’m not sure if Lady Penelope is to be trusted, but she definitely keeps things interesting in every scene she appears. The worldbuilding is really good, I couldn’t follow the plot in every aspect but I enjoyed learning through Eleanora’s eyes.
I believe anyone who enjoys speculative and/or Christian fiction will really enjoy this and want to know more with the sequel when it’s ready! I do consider this a slightly dark re-telling because of the some of the content and not suitable for a younger audience, recommended age 15 and up.
I received an eARC from the author. I voluntarily reviewed this book, the comments and opinions are my own.
This is a novel that packs mystery and intrigue into historical fiction… what fun. It’s 1870 and Prague is a hotbed if political machinations, assainations and secret societies. There were many aspects of the story that I enjoyed.
The orphan story: Eleanora and her elder brother Ben are orphans living as servants to their stepmother in their own father’s home. They dream of a feeedom that is simply a life away from obligation to Lady Cecilia and her unkindness. Despite the hardships under which they live, they are resilient and still manage to retain an innocence and zeal for life… maybe Eleanora more so than Ben.
The sibling element: I enjoyed the relationship between these two. Ben was injured as a child and suffers a disability of his leg. I wish we’d gotten more of an explanation of his injury/ disability though. He wears a brace and is still able to move around quite a bit but society sees him as a cripple and his stepmother constantly reminded him of his uselessness. This of course adds an edge of bitterness and fatalism to his character. But Nora, as he calls his sister, is always able to bring out the light in him. He is her defender and protector. They argue and tease but the bond is strong and fun to read.
Eleanora is a delightful heroine to read and easy to root for. She is about 19, I believe, and sometimes still acts like an overly emotional teenager. But that is tempered by her grit and loyalty to those she loves. I’m excited for her physical training to properly begin in Book 2. I suspect she’s going to be pretty kicka$$. In Book 1, she’s focuses more on the ‘art of being a lady.’
I laughed a moment later, remembering to do it that musical, charming way The Ladies’ Guide to Excellence and Etiquette instructed, with a high pitch and my hand covering my mouth in a delicate manner. The lost prince story: There is a lost Prince to be found. His identity has already been discovered by some who would use it to their own gain. The Order must find out who the Prince is and what his motivations are and protect him if necessary. There is a twist to this part of the story. I can’t say it was totally unexpected as the hints were dropped early enough but it was still fun to watch it play out.
The romance: I love a little romance and this story has it. The romance is not the focal point and is just one of several elements that make up the overall tale. I think it’s sweet and really enjoyed reading the scenes between Eleanora and her interest. Perhaps the attraction develops quickly but that is addressed within the story. Also, given the time period, it is in context.
The cliffhanger: I’m not a fan of cliffhangers. That said I was already invested in this story and the characters and had every intention of reading the next in the series. So… when is the second book, Prince of Secrets and Shadows coming out?
The pacing is slowish. This is the first in the series (not sure how long the series is meant to be) so that is expected. There is a lot of scene and context setting and introductions to the main players. There is still a good forward movement to the tale and enough happens, including some resolutions, to rope the reader in.
Overall this is an exciting and entertaining read. I’m looking forward to the next part!
Kingdom of Ash and Soot is beautifully written, offering alluring and intense character-driven scenes that make you feel like you are standing next to Eleanora the entire time. The historical parts of the novel are compelling and so intricately woven into the plot. The twists and turns will leave you guessing and when the pieces finally come together, you won’t be disappointed.
I’ve read a ton of books that have traces of Cinderella, but never one that includes action scenes, political intrigue, and the incredible spy component like Mission Impossible. There’s the stepmother and the god-awful stepchildren that torment Eleanora and her brother, Ben. And then there’s the wonderfully stubborn grandmother that comes to their rescue, to take them out of servitude and give their lives more meaning and to give the two siblings what they have always wanted: freedom. But as some know, freedom comes at a cost. Always.
It comes at a cost that Eleanora is willing to pay.
Eleanora is a strong and courageous character and refuses to let anything, and anyone, break her. She controls her own destiny and refuses to let anyone tell her otherwise. Family is important to her, and putting up with her stepfamily is what she does to ensure her and Ben have a future. She’s a lovable main character and one that deserves a happily every after.
Though I loved Eleanora and her bravery and her desire to do what’s right, I loved Ferdy more. Ferdy is such a lovable and fun character and, of course, he sounds so attractive on the page. I was more excited about the scenes with Ferdy than I was for any other scenes (I’m hoping there’s a ton more of Ferdy in book two). He showcases charm and his dazzling intellect, all the while trying to sweep Eleanora off her feet. Ferdy brings a giddiness to the book that I feel would be missing if he didn’t exist. All in all, Eleanora is one lucky girl to have a character like Ferdy vying for her attention. I also very much enjoyed Lady POW in all her stubborn and sassy glory. There were so many enjoyable characters in Kingdom of Ash and Soot that once I finished the first book, it felt like I was leaving family.
When I read the last line of the book, I was like, “That’s it?!” I craved more of Eleanora’s story (and Ferdy, of course), and I cannot wait to read the second book. Eleanora’s journey is no where near its end; her journey has just begun, and I’m determined to watch her finish it.
Kingdom of Ash and Soot comes out Tuesday, July 3 (only a few more days!). But you can pre order the book today from Amazon or Barnes & Noble. I have my copy on pre order; I loved the story of Eleanora so much that I had to order a paperback copy!
If you love the spy element, romantic intrigue, fierce action scenes, swoon-worthy love interests, and character-driven plots, then I highly recommend Kingdom of Ash and Soot.
