I think I'm really going to love this series. It was the first book but it felt like being in a room full of friends. There is the new owner of an established coffee shop, the former employee who just kind of sweeps in and takes over, and the curmudgeon with a good heart. Together they will lead the stories. This book was well written and the mystery well plotted and interesting. Can't wait to see where the author goes in her next book.
Maggie has moved back to the small town where she grew up. She has inherited her aunts coffee shop and house along with an assortment of town eccentrics, what she didn't count on was trying to solve a murder that occurred right outside her door.
Short enough it was over before it could really sink in how badly it was written. Also, to all the people saying the main character solved the crime...no???? She literally just stood there while the killer accidentally confessed to the cop who then explained a few clues himself while arresting said killer. The majority of the situation is never actually explained in the most slapdash "it's the end now because I'm done writing" style, as if the author also had no idea why any of this happened or why any of the characters were the way they were.

This was an enjoyable read. This is the first book of the Raised & Glazed series. In this book, we meet Maggie Sharpe, our main character. She moves back to her hometown after inheriting her aunt’s coffee shop and house. One day, she finds a body near the dumpster, and starts investigating the death/murder. I thought the story was short. I wish it was longer than 2 hrs and 34 mins, which is about 146 pages. The narrator was engaging and made the story interesting. I thought the mystery was great. Also, I really liked Maggie. I thought she was smart and witty. I thought the ending was great. I cannot wait to read book 2. A Filling Account, here I come. Overall, a great read.
Maggie's inherited her aunt's home and donut shop. The perfect way to regroup after her divorce. When she finds a body by the dumpster, she noses around.
I give this 5 stars, because it’s really cute and short! Maggie is the main character. She now owns Dogwood Donuts and a cottage that her Aunt Marjorie left her in her will. Ruby Cobb used to help Marjorie in the Donut shop and now she helps Maggie. Orson is a recent add-in staff member, too…but is he actually the killer of Natalie?
I’d say the only thing missing from this story is a pet. I know Ruby had that Avenue covered because she works on her farm and has plenty of a variety of animals. Maybe Maggie will get a dog or goat to adopt her soon!
Next in this 10 book series is A Filling Account (Raised and Glazed Cozy Mysteries Book 2).
This was a fun start for a new series by a new author to the Summer Prescott Publishing family. I've read so many of these authors and loved their work, and this lady's work is definitely no exception to that. I really enjoyed meeting Maggie and eventually her new assistant. It wasn't super obvious whodunit, so I wasn't quite sure at any given time. I knew who I'd have picked to be guilty though, lol.
I'm definitely going to be reading the next book when it comes out! The shop team Maggie put together was also quite the sleuthing team too!
Maggie Sharpe returns to her childhood home, Dogwood Mountain, Missouri, when she inherits a cute little cottage and a donut shop from her Aunt Marjorie. She throws herself into running the business, but soon after, a body is discovered in the alley behind her shop and all kinds of secrets see the light as the investigation progresses. In order to save the donut shop – and her reputation – she begins investigating on her own. There’s not a lot else to do when the police shut down the crime scene anyway.
This was a moderately entertaining book. Has the I-inherited-a-donut-shop thing been done before ? Yes, yes it has. But Maggie is a likeable character, and there’s an intriguing whiff of romance with her childhood sweetheart, now the town sheriff. The secondary characters are well-drawn, and the plot held my interest. It was a fast, easy, clean read, perfect for the treadmill or recumbent bike. While I wouldn’t go out of my way to read them, I would read more in the series if I happen across them.
This is the first book in this new series. I hope it continues for many, many more.
Maggie has inherited the donut shop when her favorite aunt passed away. She also got the small cottage that her aunt used to live in. One morning as she is taking out the trash from the shop, she stumbles upon a dead body. She calls the cops and her shop has been blocked off as a crime scene. Come to find out it was the body of the less than legal and honest real estate lady from town.
Now she has to help figure out who did the deed before someone else dies. Sill she do it?
I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
I had a hard time keeping all the characters separate, who was who, who worked for who but it was a fun read. It was a bit too fast paced and had a very abrupt ending. It was the first book, but I felt as though I was dropped into the middle of the story.
Maggie inherits a cottage and a donut shop from her aunt in Dogwood Mountain.
An unpopular real estate agent is found dead in the alley behind the shop and there is a looong list of potential suspects. She and her new hire, Ruby, half try to find the culprit. The reason seems only because it looks like someone is trying to set her up.
Not the best, not the worst. It's a good solid start in this cozy setting. The biggest issue is the white room syndrome. Now, it is a super short book, so it can't be all that elaborate, and this is something that can grow as the series continues, obviously. But I felt the need to point it out because I've read other short cozies that did manage to set the scene vividly. But, no hate. I'll continue the series.
Cozy mysteries are not for me. This book was honestly kind of boring. It was short, which isn't always a bad thing but I felt like there wasn't enough detail surrounding certain characters or events. It wasn't necessarily poorly written, but wasn't great either. It's a quick read and if you're into these kind of short stories, it's probably worth reading. I don't plan on continuing the series. I wanted to see more about the characters, more development, more about their past, more information in general. I really wanted to see the main character date and we didn't get that either. Overall, didn't really care for i.
This is a great start to a new series, I love it. The characters are cool. Maggie is a smart cookie, I really like Ruby she is a pistol and Orson he is a treasure. Police chief Brett Mission is no joke, he handles his business. You will enjoy the start of this series. Maggie starts to open her bakery from inheritance from her aunt Marjorie, and things don't go as planned, but with her and Ruby they start to investigate and find their selves in a sticky situation. Now read this book to find out.
Read if you like: - Cozy mysteries - Donuts - Short stories My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars My Thoughts: I loved this book! It was a perfect and fast-paced read that didn't get bogged down in the details. Although this book is short, the plot was well executed and thoroughly articulated. I tend to find that most short stories are rushed, but this one wasn't. The characters are likable and enjoyable to read about. If you're looking for a quick mystery book with a surprising murderer reveal, read this book. With fifteen books in this series, you could be entertained for several days!
Unlikely Killer Forty-something, Maggie Sharpe, has returned to her quaint, childhood town of Dogwood Mountain, Missouri, nestled in the beautiful Ozark Mountains. She recently inherited Dogwood Donuts, along with a cute little cottage, from her Aunt Marjorie and she is ready to keep the business running and settle into a new, peaceful life. There was an unlikely killer. It was a little bit too late for the crime. I bought this book. This in no way affects my opinion of this book.
Super short, character driven mystery. The resolution to the murder felt rushed, but I loved getting to know these characters -- especially the way new-in-town Maggie finds her way both in business and friendship. Heartwarming and funny and definitely a case where the heroine actually works at her profession with some sleuthing on the side. The mystery is worked in around her donut shop so that helps speed things along in this novella length cozy. It ends on a really sweet (ha, pun unintended) note and I'm ready to dive into the second book right away.
Short and sweet. Enjoyed the audiobook though I sometimes felt the characterization of the main character was off, as I couldn't quite tell how old she was. Though the plot summary seemed to indicate she was in her mid forties, I felt that she had to be in her mid to late thirties based off a comment made about her in the beginning of the novel. As such the author needs to keep better track of her characters and their backgrounds. However, the murder mystery was short and sweet, well done and enjoyable with memorable characters. Definitely will read the next book in the series.
Typical small town/bakery cozy mystery, but this was a great way to start the series
4.5 stars
The writing immediately drew me in, absorbing me in the world, characters, and the mystery. This was a very engaging and entertaining read as Maggie began her journey in reopening her aunt’s donut shop in her hometown with a mystery in tow. It was a very quick and fast paced read that I was very invested in. It was a good time and was a very solid read. I want to continue on in the future with the series.
This was one of the best cozy mysteries I have read lately. It was short and sweet, not overly drawn out with excessive dialogue or useless side plots. Maggie, the main character, was rational, which honestly is a rarity in cozies. Usually the main character is totally clueless and ends up almost getting murdered by the killer in the last chapter. So glad that didn’t happen here!
I didn’t really care of Brett, but maybe that will change as we get to know him more in the series. Looking forward to the next book!
I think cozy mysteries are just not for me. Every one I’ve read so far feels like the crime is solved accidentally or by pure coincidence.
This one was also a bit boring and there was a lot of fluff that didn’t advance the plot. For instance, in the span of one night, two characters said multiple times something along the lines of, “Let’s eat and then I’ll tell you the details about XYZ,” “Let me go to the bathroom and then I’ll tell you about XYZ,” and “Cut me some dessert and then I’ll tell you about XYZ.”
great new series, friends, cops, donuts and a murder
Maggie moves back to her hometown after a 20yr absence, her aunt left her a house and her business. She runs into people from her high school days, the now chief of police in her Donut shop, a body is found in her alley behind the shop. She hires help and makes new friends , while sleuthing to find out who how and why the lady was murdered at her business..
Baking and Entering is a new cozy mystery series. The characters are likable. The mystery was interesting and kept me guessing. I"m not sure why the culprit did it.. Usually there is more of an explanation. Maggie inherits her Aunt's donut business and house.. She hires Ruby. They make a good team. Maggie finds a dead body behind her shop. She calls the police and her high school boyfriend Brett Mission shows up. It is a pleasant book with a nice flow.
This is a cute little book. I love that it takes place in Missouri and that places I’m familiar with are mentioned. It has the typical cozy tropes but it also has a lot of heart. The empathy for the folks who struggle and how Maggie wants to help them was touching. I do feel like it was sort of rushed, it was only a few hours long, but i felt like the story was told. There wasn’t much investigation. I give this a 3.5 stars. I will continue to read the next one.
The audiobook is based on a novella and it's the start into a series of cozy mystery.
At Audible I could listen to it for free, so I can't complain. It's a decent story, a bit more time to develop the story might have make it stronger.... The narrator did a good job and I can't say that it was a waste of time. I enjoyed listening to this one, but... It wasn't special. On the other hand there is potential to the setting and characters. I will check out part 2.
Returning ti her hometown when she inherited her aunt doughnut shop, Maggie Sharpe did not expect murder in the mix.
A body is found in the alley besides her shop as she will find herself involved in the case. Nothing screams as bad advertising as she tries to find the culprit before she no longer has a business.
