This book it was a straightforward plague apocalypse. This book can be taken as a stand alone but it seemed incomplete. Maybe it just seemed so because of all the holes, there's never a good place to end a book like this except that life goes on.
The author has an agenda to set up a certain scenario and ignored what would really happen at the beginning of the plague. The agenda is based on historical knowledge of how others have survived some similar scenarios in history. This and that it seems well written, are its only redeeming features.
There are many ignored realities or unrealities. Everyone they meet is either female or a bad guy. There's only 10 seconds of a news broadcast listened to buy the main character. They don't go looking through their neighbors houses for stuff. There are just too many holes to be listed here.
Though it had some redeeming qualities that almost made me give it 3 stars the holes were just too much for me.
This was an awesome book! Definitely for those who enjoy the post-apocalyptic/dystopian genre, but really there's something for everyone. I thought all of the female characters were very well-drawn, and I liked that Jack was a strong but vulnerable protagonist just trying to protect his family from the onslaught of evil. I was impressed by the author's mastery of many topics (history and survivalism, among them). The descriptions were wonderful. I really felt like I was there—don't want to write spoilers but there was a scene with an intruder trying to gain entry that scared the bejesus out of me. I hope that Mr. Brandon continues to work in this genre, and maybe create a series from this novel. There's so much more to explore, and I'd love to see how these characters navigate this bold, uncharted territory. This is an author to watch! Great stuff!
This was terrible. The dialogue was the worst part -- it was stilted, no one uses parentheses when writing dialogue, and no one needs to say the name of the person they are talking to that often. I couldn't keep track of how much time had passed. All the characters seemed awfully malleable depending on the situation, swinging wildly from one perspective to the other in very little time. Many of the details were just not quite believable. And I have no idea what the point was, at the end. Did the author even read through his own book once? I have to doubt it. Not recommended.
This is a one of a kind read of its genre. The book delves deep into the post apocalypse realm, and leaves out unnecessary fillers, leaving the reader engaged until the end. The author develops the characters to almost perfection, and having the story written in first person grabs the reader and brings them into the narrative to feel like they are apart of what's happening. 5+ stars and hope to hear more from this author soon
Pretty good book overall. Seems everything went a little easy for the main character but who wants to read a depressing book where all goes wrong and everyone dies?
