The last volume of
I'm in Love with the Villainess
is a crazy rollercoaster. Was I expecting the genre to shift? No. Was I absolutely hooked up on it? 100%.
It is always difficult to review and rate the last book of a series without giving too much away, but I am finding this one incredibly hard because of how many unexpected things happened.
Regarding the plot, I can only say that I would have never, in a million years, guessed how things would go on. While in the Nur Empire, I could somehow imagine the direction of the story thanks to our knowledge of the world and characters, but after that, it was just impossible. Moreover, the best part of it all is that it works perfectly with the world we have seen since volume one.
Regarding the characters and relationships, I was impressed by how much presence they had despite focusing on the action/fantasy/sci-fi side of the story. My only complaint about the last installment was exactly that, by the way, so I was greatly surprised by this. I would not say that Rae and Claire have developed that greatly in this volume, but we definitely see the seeds of their development in the way they think and act. In fact, I think both, individually and collectively, were given so many new layers to their character and relationship that the whole perspective of them has shifted for me in a good way. I will say it again: they truly are SOULMATES.
To be honest, I am sad to finish this series because I have loved the experience of reading it. I remember sobbing inctrollably in one particular scene and thinking: I'm never letting go of this. However, I have some solace in the fact that I have the side story and manga to keep my obsession growing.
To conclude, I recommend the
I'm in Love with the Villainess
series endlessly to anyone who wants a good sapphic fantasy story. It is so worth it that I will never be able to recommend it enough.
