Robert lives with his husband in Slovakia, and is lucky enough to write full-time.
Book 9 in the Detective Chief Inspector Erika Foster series, and it remains as fresh and inventive as the first.
The storyline begins with a collapsed ceiling in a flat, through which the neighbour below believes she can see a dead body. Erika is first on the scene and finds that the flat has been thoroughly cleaned, the smell of cleaning products being overwhelming. However, forensics discover cocaine residue coating every surface of the ceiling. Erika calls in the drug dogs, who lead her to a mysterious parcel locker on the outside wall of the property. Chasing down the locker’s owner leads Erika back where she never expected to be – staring into the eyes of Jerome Goodman, the drug dealer who murdered her husband, Mark, ten years ago.
She arrests him on the spot, but there’s just one problem. His passport and his solicitor say his name is Kieron Bagshaw, and his record is squeaky clean.
With top brass demanding she take leave to deal with her PTSD and even her closest colleagues questioning her sanity, Erika decides to use the time off to do some digging of her own. Trawling for clues through old newspapers, encrypted messages, and secret underground passageways, Erika makes a series of shocking discoveries that move Mark’s murder from cold case to active investigation, all while flying under the Met’s radar.
The revelations will push Erika to the brink, forcing her to confront the trauma of her past and the truth about what happened the day Mark died – and who among her friends was involved from the shadows.
And so it is that we are finally privy to the exact details of what really happened on that fateful day 10 years ago.
This is another terrific read in this brilliant series, when Erika is finally able to confront those responsible for her husband’s death and those of her colleagues. We get to see a deeply emotional side to Erika’s personality this time around, and it’s great to witness the support of her dedicated team at this difficult time. Exciting, suspenseful, and one of my favourites in the series so far. Highly recommended.

Robert Bryndza has a way of making a book suspenseful even though readers know who most of the antagonists are from nearly the beginning of the book. Chasing Shadows, the ninth book in the series featuring Detective Chief Inspector Erica Foster, continues to be set mainly in London with a few trips to the Manchester area and to Wales. This time a routine emergency call ends with a twist. A dead body is found in the apartment above a collapsed ceiling. With DNA evidence scrubbed away, it seems a dead end until drug residue is found on the ceiling. When the drug dogs lead her and the team to a parcel locker on the outside wall of the property, a Foster gets a big surprise. After finding the locker’s owner and her boyfriend, Foster finds herself staring at Jerome Goodman, the man who murdered her husband ten years ago.
The arrest doesn’t go as planned. His passport and lawyer say his name is Kieron Bagshaw. Foster is forced to take leave to deal with her post traumatic stress disorder, but she uses the time off to do some digging of her own, with some help from a few trusted colleagues and her partner, Igor. Foster is principled and tends to go against authority if she feels they’re not doing what’s right. She has a direct manner, gets results, and is well respected by her team. However, because she occasionally bucks authority and ruffles feathers, her career feels stalled. She can be stubborn, feels her job is a calling, and doesn’t care what people think of her which makes her more challenging for the brass to control. The other characters are well defined as well, with a set of repeat characters from previous books along with new ones related to the cases in this story line. It was good to see Detective Inspectors Moss and Peterson get high visibility in this novel with some great character growth and depth. While most of the story is from Foster’s point of view, there are occasionally chapters from the point of view of the antagonists.
The prologue is chilling and the first chapter gets readers engaged in the emergency call mentioned above. The plot is twisty, deeply involved, and intense at times. It quickly builds momentum as the plot twists and turns and higher-ups try to contain the investigation. There are unpredictable moments in the story that are unsettling. It allows readers to gain insight into the thoughts, behaviors, and actions towards others of both Foster and the antagonists. There is a surprise near the end that completely caught me off guard and makes me wonder what is in store for Foster in the next book. My biggest quibble is that the storyline goes back and forth in time frequently and this disrupted the flow and pacing for me.
Overall, this gripping, emotional, and complex police procedural has well-developed and compelling characters, contains plenty of action, and has a plot that keeps readers turning the pages to see what will happen next. If you are expecting a solid series that will have mysteries, suspense, crime, and action, then this is a series that I recommend.
Raven Street Publishing and Robert Bryndza provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own. Publication date is currently set for June 05, 2025.
-------------------------------------- My 3.73 rounded to 4 stars review is coming soon.
Did I drop everything and move this book to the top of my TBR as soon as I received it.. you bet I did!! this is the book that Erika Foster fans have been waiting for and my goodness it was worth the wait. Outstanding once again Robert Bryndza, you never let me down!!
In book 9 of this amazing series we finally get the details of what happened on that day 10 years ago. Ow, when Erika’s husband Mark and her team were killed in a police raid in Manchester. That day changed her life and the way she sees the world. Now on an investigation into a murder, she comes face to face with the man responsible, only he claims to be someone else. Then she is told that the man who killed Mark is dead.
Now if you know Erika at all you know that she is not going to take this. She knows it was him and she wants justice for her husband. Even being put on stress leave isn’t going to stop her. And her loyal team and partner are there to help her.
This book was so good!! i just love Erika and her way of doing what is right, even when she is told otherwise. She is smart, determined and snarky and I love it. I cannot recommend this series more for those who love a good gritty police procedural.
Thank you so much to Raven Street Publishing for my early copy to read. Always such a joy to read these books. Easy 5 stars.
Detective Erika Foster is back!!!! Woohoo! I always get excited when I see Robert Bryndza has a new book coming out. The Erika Foster series is such a great and thrilling series!!!! If you have not read this series before, you are seriously missing out! I could not wait to dig in and Robert Bryndza did not let me down! I found this book to be gripping, tense, shocking and hard to put down!
In Chasing Shadows Erika responds to a crime scene involving a dead woman in a bed. The killer left no evidence behind except for cocaine residue found on the ceiling. The investigation and drug dogs bring Erika and her team to a parcel locker and the owner - Jerome Goodman, the drug dealer who seriously injured her and killed her husband, Mark and several other officers during a raid ten years ago! Talk about a blast from the past! When Erika gets over the shock, she arrests him, but he is adamant that he is Kieron Bagshaw.
Her boss tells her to take some time off as the man in question comes up in the system as Kieron Bagshaw and his attorney vouches for him. Erika takes the break, but she is not backing down. Fans of the series know that backing down is not in Erika's nature. She is determined, diligent, and on a mission! Only time will tell if Erika can get to the bottom of things in this tense and shocking book!
As with his other books in this series, I found Chasing Shadows to be well thought out and wonderfully written. This book also has a nice amount of tension which I always love in books. The pacing is also very nice. There were no slow moments in this book. I enjoyed how characters work together and rely on each other as the danger mounts. This was an intense cat-and-mouse thriller! I enjoyed the dynamics between all the characters including the ones we are not meant to like. This made for great reading.
Such a great series! Such a great book! Robert Bryndza has another winner on his hands!
Thank you to Raven Street Publishing and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.

First and foremost, a large thank you to NetGalley, Robert Bryndza, and Raven Street Piblishing for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.
Always excited to get my hands on Robert Bryndza’s work, I gladly accepted the latest DCI Erika Foster book. Full of gritty action and a dedicated plan to right some evil, Erika Foster makes it a point of never holding back. In this instance, she is sure she sees someone who made her life hell, though no one around her is quite sure it’s the same man. Even when she is forced on leave, DCI Foster continues her pursuit to bring a sense of justice and provide one more reason she always gets the criminal element. A great story that got my blood pumping, Robert Bryndza knows his stuff!
After going to investigate word of a dead body found in an apartment building, Detective Chief Inspector Erika Foster and her team realise there is more to the story than meets the eye. The flat below had a radiator drop through the ceiling and the crime scene is scrubbed clean, as though someone was trying to hide something. Minute drug residue hints that this might be another type of crime scene and drug dogs send the team on a chase to a parcel locker with other worrisome evidence.
While trying to locate the locker’s owner, DCI Foster comes face to face with a man everyone thought dead; Jerome Goodman. He was the drug dealer responsible for the death of her husband, Mark, a decade ago. Might this victim be the latest in an ongoing list of others Goodman has killed and how has he evaded the police all these years?
An immediate arrest proves troubling, as Goodman’s identification is in the name of Kieran Bagshaw and there is no criminal record of any kind. A case of mistaken identity? DCI Foster thinks not and latches on to prove it, even as she is forced on leave for her troubling actions. DCI Foster’s PTSD and memories of the murder of Mark sends her in a spiral and fuels her hunt for Jerome Goodman, hoping he will slip up a show his true colours. She is on a mission and her dedication will soon yield sole surprising results as she searches the shadows and tries to process the loss of Mark once again. What she uncovers could rock the Met and those in her line of command. Robert Bryndza delivers another strong novel in this series that never gives up!
I remember discovering the work of Robert Bryndza a number of years ago and being highly impressed. He knows how to spin a tale and keep things edgy from start to finish. The narrative moves things along, preparing strong direction to settle matters in a timely manner. Characters serve to deliver their perspectives throughout and keep the reader wondering. Bryndza develops a great plot to keep the reader guessing as things progress in two time periods. Surprises prove effective and help pave the way for future installments of the series.
Kudos, Mr. Bryndza, for a great addition to the collection for all to enjoy.
Robert Bryndza’s "Chasing Shadows" is a slick, well-oiled thriller that delivers. As the ninth book in the Detective Erika Foster series, it also works perfectly as a standalone, even if you're new to the series, as I was.
Ten years after a disastrous drug raid, Commander Erika lives with the lingering guilt and haunting memories of the incident. The operation, which she led, resulted in the deaths of several officers, including her husband. Erika herself was wounded, and the suspects remain at large. Now, during a separate investigation, Erika unexpectedly encounters Jerome Goodman, one of the primary suspects she had been monitoring. Despite his having iron-clad proof of another identity, she is undeterred and arrests him. This leads to his release by the department and raises questions about Erika's judgment, ultimately forcing her to take stress leave.
The novel centers on her independent investigation, conducted outside departmental strictures. As she unearths new details, chasing shadows of the past, she starts to doubt her own culpability, suspecting the disastrous raid might not have been entirely her fault and that the suspects could be powerfully connected.
The novel maintains a brisk, almost relentless pace, despite its detailed police procedurals, as we rush to the conclusion. While Erika's unauthorized methods and access to cautioned colleagues raise some questions, her spunk and determination are ultimately admirable.
“Chasing Shadows” is an almost impossible-to-put-down book, a great way to kill a reading slump.

My Thoughts /
4.5 rounded up
First and foremost, a huge THANK YOU to NetGalley, Raven Street Publishing and author, Robert Bryndza for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review. Publication date is currently set for June 05, 2025.
When you receive an email from Rob Bryndza via Raven Street Publishing which advises the new Detective Erika Foster crime thriller is available for request 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Book #9 in the Detective Erika Foster series, and the author has taken us back to where it all began – back ten years – to the day Erika lost her husband, Detective Inspector Mark Foster, and four other members of her team when they were all shot and killed during a drug raid which went horribly wrong. Foster, who was leading the raid, was also severely injured but survived. The ensuing backlash from her superiors within the Met was swift and brutal. Forced to take the blame for the botched raid, Foster was booted out of the drug squad she headed. Her former colleagues no longer spoke to her. She'd lost friends as a result. Can't face the dependants of the colleagues who died. She's avoided attending therapy and trying (unsuccessfully) to keep a lid of her emotions.
Answering a dispatch call regarding a suspected Code 5 (dead body), Erika arrived on the scene. Her senses on high alert – there was something creepy about the room. There were no obvious signs of a struggle, there were no drugs or drug paraphernalia in the room, just the body, and she looked content – just like she was sleeping.
Things take a darker turn when forensics find a layer of cocaine powder on the ceiling in the dead woman's unit. The drug dogs lead the team to a set of parcel lockers just outside the building. And an investigation into those lockers leads Erika straight back into a collision course with the past.
Chasing Shadows is the book the series had to have. The story has Bryndza's writing style all over it - the writing is taut, the dialogue crisp and emotionally charged and the pacing is relentless. The flashbacks to what happened ten years ago tie in nicely with the present day investigation and the pain Foster is experiencing with this investigation is visceral.
I can't believe we're up to book #9 already; and reading the author's notes made me happy - he writes that he has no plans to end the series and has lots of ideas to keep Erika busy in the future. Author's Note = Happy Reader.
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Raven Street Publishing for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.
This is a series I have caught up with and am up to date now. A very good series with a strong character in Erika Foster. This book resolves an incident referred to in past books on Erika’s husband Mark’s death (along with a few other police officers) during a raid.
The prologue covers Mark’s death – the raid as it happened, and the officers taken by surprise when they were shot at. There was talk that the intelligence was inadequate before the raid was kicked off. This continued to prey on Erika’s mind since many years. In the present time, 10 years later, a lady called Sherry calls emergency. There is a crash into her apartment from above and along with a radiator a body falls through the roof. The flat above looks to have been scrubbed clean of any prints but there is a lining of cocaine in the ceiling. Erika (now with her boyfriend Igor) is called into the case with her colleague Moss. The trail leads her to one Kieron Bagshaw who Erika is sure is Jerome Goodman, who killed Mark and the other officers. But the records show that Jerome died in a car accident 8 years back. There is no trace of his partners of that time – Frank and Danielle too.
This book resolves the incident of the past neatly – how Jerome & his partners were able to surprise the raiding police contingent & escape, and what happened subsequently. There is a twist on the help they received from within the system. Erika’s character, as always, is excellent, as also her colleagues Moss & Peterson. Some aspects of the plot are a bit simplistic, but nevertheless, the tie-up is good.
First of all, I must admit that the Erika Foster series has been on my TBR for ages and I just never took the time to start it. So this ninth installment is my first, but now I understand the hype.
What a whirlwind! The characters are well crafted - especially Erika of course -as you might expect after nine books. The story is riveting, and easy to follow even if you are a neophyte like me, and the emotions splurge off the pages. There is suspense, betrayal, some gory murders, mystery... it's all in here. And of course it takes place in London, my favorite city, which is a superb background to this intricate plot.
I've actually changed some appointments in my agenda so I could continue reading. It's a testament to its quality that I've read it in two days time. It is a very satisfying read that I can truly recommend, even if you haven't read the previous books.
Thank you NetGalley, Raven Street Publishing, and the author for allowing me to be an early reader. All opinions are my own.
I've happily followed Bryndza's Kate Marshall and Erika Foster thriller series' since the beginning and was happy to see this 9th installment of the Erika Foster series. I would recommend both of these series to mystery/thriller lovers!
Description: In a deadly game of cat and mouse, Detective Erika Foster confronts her greatest nemesis—where the lines of justice blur and secrets unravel.
A collapsed ceiling. A dead body. My Thoughts: Erika's investigation of a dead woman found in an apartment leads her deep into the past to the first book in the series. When her husband Mark was killed in a disastrous raid and several other officers were killed as well. When she has the suspected killer, then finds out he has a different name and no record, then finds out the real killer is supposedly dead and there is a record of the death - she is stumped. She was so sure the man she found was Mark's killer. Erika pushes the limits of her authority and takes on upper management in her determination to find the truth. The book is fast-moving and engrossing, the investigation a complex web of information that unfolds bit by bit. I loved this installment - it was emotional and thrilling and I couldn't put it down.
Thanks to Raven Street Publishing through Netgalley for an advance copy.
Anyone who follows The Book Review Café knows I’m a huge fan of Robert Bryndza’s Erika Foster series, so you can imagine my excitement when Chasing Shadows landed in my hands. And WOW, it did not disappoint. This one grabs you instantly, and honestly, it’s a contender for the best book in the series yet. Robert Bryndza delivers everything fans have come to love and more: tension, twists, and emotional depth, all packed into one of those rare, read-in-one-sitting thrillers that refuses to let you go.
A routine 999 call turns dark when a body is found in a spotless flat, no evidence, no clues. But for Erika Foster, the real shock is recognising the face of the man who killed her husband ten years ago. Only his ID says he’s someone else, and his record is spotless.
Cut off from the case and running out of allies, Erika digs deeper on her own. What she uncovers is a dark web of secrets, lies, and betrayal, forcing her to confront the past she’s never been able to let go. It’s her most personal case yet, and the most devastating.
Robert Bryndza has truly outdone himself. Chasing Shadows is a taut, emotionally charged thriller that blends gripping police work with the raw intensity of a psychological drama. The tension is sharp, the twists are masterfully delivered, and the pacing is relentless. There are no wasted chapters here, just expertly crafted suspense. What truly sets this story apart is its emotional weight. Erika isn’t just solving a case, she’s confronting the deepest wounds of her past, and Bryndza captures her grief, resilience, and vulnerability with care.
Chasing Shadows is Robert Bryndza at his absolute best, dark, twisty, and emotionally gripping. Erika Foster has never felt more real, or more haunted. I absolutely loved every minute of it. Whether you’re a devoted fan or a newcomer, this is one you won’t want to miss.
Ten years ago, on a drug raid in Manchester that Erika Foster was in charge of, her husband and some of her colleagues were killed and the murderer, Jerome Goodman, escaped. Now a DCI in London, inquiries into the death of a young woman find Erika face to face with Goodman whom she promptly arrests. The only problem is, the man she arrests has a different identity and Goodman supposedly died in an accident some years ago. She is placed on leave but cannot resist further investigation. With the surreptitious help of her team, she is determined to find out what really happened those ten years ago and bring Goodman to justice. As she unravels the truth, there are shocking revelations.
This is yet another riveting, can’t put down mystery/thriller from Bryndza. You always know with him that there will be a well plotted story that will hook you from the beginning. I like fifty two year old Erika, despite her propensity to being rather brash and often annoying to her superiors. A testament to her character, though, is the willingness of her team to assist her even when she is on the outs with her superiors. In this book, the suspense was heightened by Erika’s precarious job situation and her foreshadowing of possible doom.
This is the ninth in the Erika Foster series. As someone who has read and enjoyed some of the earlier installments, I liked learning more of her backstory. This would, however, work well as a standalone. I cannot wait for the next in this outstanding series.
Thanks to #NetGalley and #RavenstreetPublishing for the DRC.
This book was just okay. I think it may be a part of a series, but did very well as a stand alone book. The suspense part was good as well. The relationships however were strange. They relationship between Igor and Ericka was just annoying, she treated him so badly it was hard to see why he was in the relationship. Also, the story felt a little stilted at times.
Thank you to Net Galley and Raven Street Publishing for giving me this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Chasing Shadows is book 9 in the Detective Erika Foster series by Robert Bryndza. It's the book we've all been waiting for as we finally find out more about the case that killed Erika's husband 10 years ago. When Erika is called to the scene of a dead body in which a ceiling collapsed there is no evidence to be gathered. The apartment has been wiped clean and still smells of bleach. The drug dogs indicate something is amiss and they find cocaine on the ceiling. Weird. The dogs also indicate drugs in a parcel locker in the lobby. As they track down the owner of the locker, Erika finds herself looking into the eyes of Jerome Goodman, the man who killed her husband Mark. Erika knows it's him immediately and places him under arrest. However, his name is now Kieron Bagshaw, his passport and lawyer say. He has no record and has never been arrested.
Erika's boss wants her to take leave and deal with her PTSD as she can't keep a man arrested for no reason. Some of Erika's colleagues think she's gone over the edge and that she's seeing her husband's killer in the eyes of strangers. Is Erika projecting what she wants to see in Kieron? As she's forced to turn in her badge and gun while on a forced 2 week leave, Erika decides to investigate on her own. Erika makes a lot of discoveries with the help of a couple of her friends on her team who believe her. Some of the discoveries she makes will force Erika to look at people she's trusted. Will Erika be able to prove that Kieron is really Jerome? Will she be able to prove that he killed her husband and 4 other police officers? Will her boss find out she's working behind the scenes? Will Erika be able to redeem herself and prove to people that she's not crazy? Chasing Shadows is one of the best books in the Erika Foster series and I rate it 5 stars with my highest recommendation. If you love a great thriller, get this book and enjoy! I'd like to thank NetGalley and Raven Street Publishing for an advanced copy of Chasing Shadows in exchange for a fair review. #ChasingShadows
Once again Robert Bryndza has produced another fabulous installment in the Erica Foster series, if you are a fan, you are going to love this one.
This will be the most personal case Ericka has had to face as she is on the hunt to chase her arch nemesis, Jerome Goodman, the killer who got away after shooting dead her husband Mark and four other officers in a sting that went terribly wrong. It was so good to go back to this first book in the series and I was rooting for Erica all the way through.
It begins with a woman who is found dead in an apartment, her body only discovered when a ceiling fan falls through the roof of the apartment above. On arrival Erica soon realizes this death is not by natural causes even though no apparent cause, the whole apartment has been cleaned with bleach and hence no DNA is found, however traces of cocaine residue are found on the ceiling. So, who is this woman that apparently led a very quiet life and did not seem to have many visitors. Then a suspicious parcel on leads the team down another path all adding to the mystery of events occurring.
Exciting, suspenseful and just what you come to expect from this excellent author. I was so excited to read at the end of this book that Robert will continue with more books in this series.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy, all opinions expressed are my own.
When I heard that I was being offered the opportunity to read book 9 in this amazing series, by the publishers I dropped everything to read it. We finally get to the bottom of Foster’s back story and find out what happened on the day her husband died. The author does not miss a step in relating the back story and unveiling the reasons whilst also progressing the plot in the present day. The way he has managed to relate the story and at the same time allowing Erika’s character to grow.
It was amusing to reads Igor’s guide on how not to investigate. She must be even more cautious than usual as the investigation progresses, and she uncovers some extremely shocking crooked officers .But as expected nobody is above the law in Erikas’s book.
Even by the authors extremely high standards this was an amazing book. Can’t wait for book 10.
I’ve been a fan of Robert Bryndza’s Detective Erika Foster series since the very beginning so I was excited to receive a review copy of Chasing Shadows which is the latest. This is a bit different as it looks back at Erika’s earlier life and the incident which caused her husband’s death. Whilst investigating a possible murder, Erika comes into contact with a man who looks remarkably like Jerome Goodman, the master criminal who shot her husband and colleagues 10 years earlier. However, he claims he is Kieron Bagshaw and despite being absolutely certain she has the right man, Erika is forced to let him go. As she begins to investigate and confront her demons she discovers a conspiracy of silence- no one wants this case to be solved. This was a fast paced mystery which contained many surprises as well as filling in the missing part of Erika’s background. With the help of her close knit team Erika is able to discover what happened all those years ago and finally overcome the guilt she has felt about the murder. I like the way Erika does not give up, even when she is forced to take time out after her boss decides she has made a mistake arresting Bagshaw. The flashbacks to the earlier time serve build up the tension in the plot and I was really hoping that Erika and her colleagues would manage to solve the earlier crime and catch the perpetrators. The author ties in the cold case and the present day murder very cleverly and all is revealed by the last page. As is usual with these books I am already counting the days until the next one in the series. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for my advance copy.
Chasing Shadows is a thrilling, ominous tale that takes you back into the life of DCI Erika Foster as the past suddenly collides with the present when an investigation into the death of an unidentified woman shockingly brings her face-to-face with the man who destroyed her life and murdered her fellow officers, including her husband ten years ago.
The writing is tight and intense. The characters are layered, secretive, and persistent. And the plot is an engrossing tale full of twists, turns, secrets, surprises, suspects, deduction, corruption, manipulation, trauma, deception, violence, murder, and closure.
For the past several years, Robert Bryndza’s books have topped my must-read favourites list, and even though I didn’t think it was possible to love his books any more than I already did, he proved me wrong once again. Chasing Shadows is mystery writing at its best and is hands down my new favourite novel in this brilliant series I can’t get enough of.
Erika is now 52 years old and facing a mandatory medical and fitness test she's not sure she can pass. She responds to a call on her police radio about a dead body. Investigating this new case leads Erika and her loyal detective team to the closure that Erika has been chasing for ten years.
CHASING SHADOWS, a serial crime thriller killer case, is the 9th book in the Detective Erika Foster series by bestseller author, Robert Bryndza. Having read all his previous books in the series, I couldn’t wait to continue with the series. They keep getting better. I was so involved in this story that I resented any interruptions. Just leave me alone and let me read! I loved this book!
Detective Erika Foster 1. The Girl in the Ice (2016) 2. The Night Stalker (2016) 3. Dark Water (2016) 4. Last Breath (2017) 5. Cold Blood (2017) 6. Deadly Secrets (2018) 7. Fatal Witness (2022) 8. Lethal Vengeance (2024) 9. Chasing Shadows (2025)
This is my review of Chasing Shadows.
DCI Erika Foster of the London Metropolitan Police is back leading the investigation with her team including; DI Kate Moss, DI James Peterson, Detective John McGorry and Sergeant Crane.
Erika’s husband, Mark had also been a police officer, who had died on the job over ten years ago during a botched drug raid. Now Erika is dating Igor, recently divorced who has a sixteen-year-old son, Tom.
Detective Chief Inspector Erika Foster responds to a 999 call regarding a collapsed ceiling and a dead body of a woman in the empty flat above. Upon further investigation it was found that the room had been scrubbed clean with no evidence of DNA available, and cocaine residue on the surface of the ceiling.
Then a parcel locker was located outside the property…connected to Jerome Goodman, the drug dealer who was responsible for her husband’s death, 10 years ago.
Erika arrests Jerome Goodman, but his passport says his name is Kieron Bagshaw. But Erika knows that Kieron Bagshaw is Jerome Goodman!
Erika’s boss puts her on medical leave to deal with her PTSD…as she is getting too close to the fire, but she uses this time to investigate the case on the side. It is here that the tide changes and Erika undercovers some shocking discoveries.
Gripping, tense and impossible to put down, Chasing Shadows will have you on the edge of your seat, racing to the final page.
In this novel there was a nice mix of work and personal life for all the characters. Having read all Mr. Bryndza’s novels, it is a treat to follow this series and the journey of the development of the characters. I highly recommend both this series and this novel.
Many thanks to the author and Raven Street Publishing via NetGalley for my digital copy.
Chasing Shadows is the ninth thrilling book in Robert Bryndza's fabulous series featuring Slovakian-born London Murder Team D.C.I Erika Foster, and it was a great read!
This instalment goes back to the origin story of the series, as Erika finally gets the opportunity to pursue those responsible for the shooting murders of her husband Mark and four other police officers in an ambush. Along the way, she will be forced to re-assess who she can really trust and rely upon, on either side of the "thin blue line".
My sincere thanks to the author, Robert Bryndza, publisher Raven Street Publishing and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this engrossing title, which was released on 5 June 2025.
Chasing Shadows by Robert Bryndza is the 9th in the Detective Erika Foster series, and has Erika discovering new information about the death of her husband.
First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Raven Street Publishing and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I struggled a little with the last book, as it dealt with some political issues, but I struggled with this one too, because it deals with police corruption. I'm sort of hoping this is the end of both.
As well, although I understand the reason behind Erika's attitude in this one (although it's not really different than her normal antagonistic and rude behaviour), this time it grated on me. She made some stupid decisions, and I really felt sorry for Igor....got me thinking that perhaps he should just leave her. I'm hoping that this plot will take some of Erika's anger away with it.
Okay, enough complaining, because, as always, the writing was well-done, the pace was relatively fast, and the plot balanced with both personal and crime-related issues. I think Moss is one of the best friends/colleagues that Erika could ask for. Bryndza has a talent for developing characters.
The other thing that I appreciate about this author, is that he isn't popping new books out every 4-6 months. You can tell that he takes his time creating deep, complex, and well thought out plots. I am glad that he may have finally put Erika's past to bed.
Anyway, even with my criticisms, I will look forward to the next in the series.

Another exciting installment in this great series. In this one she goes back to her days as a detective in Manchester and the day her husband and her colleagues were killed. The books starts with a bang as a dead. body falls through a ceiling and continues with revelation after revelation as Erica tries to find her nemesis, Jerome Goodman. Erika Foster is a fantastic character who feels very realistic and I highly recommend this series.
Unlike some reviewers I did enjoy the narration by Jan Cramer, and as a bonus she actually knows how to pronounce Slaithwaite 😁
Chasing Shadows grabs your attention from the first page and doesnt let go .
Erika Foster is back and she is in fine form.
Not a rule follower is our Erika and you have to love that about her because its always for the good of the case.
The team is called out for a victim found under strange circumstances and while investigating Erika recognizes the man who killed her husband and fellow police officers years ago.
It was interesting to go back and find out what happened to Mark and how it has forever shaped Erika's life and career.
Erika's superiors tell her she has crossed the line when arresting the man in question and she is placed on leave.
That wont stop Erika who will turn the world upside down to get her answers and her team subvertly supports her.
Rob Bryndza takes the reader on a tense journey that will have you crossing your fingers and holding your breath that Erika will prevail.
I love this series and Chasing Shadows is my favourite so to date (until book 10)>
Thanks to NetGalley and Raven Street Publishing for the privilege of reading and reviewing Chasing Shadaows.
