Arranging the hit on Fabio was a low act, and Les knew it. And when you get Sydney's deadliest killer to do the hit, there's always a quid pro quo. In this case, Les had to take a trip to Nimbin in NSW to help an old army mate of Eddie Salita's open a bar, the Double L Ranch. Which suited Les since he had to take his friend Tony Nathan the surf photographer to the waxhead wedding of the year at Blueys Beach, and it was on the way. The waxhead wedding of the year turned into the ethnic brawl of the decade.
However, Les found comfort in the arms of Janet the Gannet from the Forbidden Planet. In Nimbin, Les found himself working as a DJ for a nutter with a nightclub where dancing was prohibited. He also found racial tension, the Russian Spetsnaz and Norwegian backpackers. Add a drug overdose, and before Les knew it, he found himself in a firefight with a bunch of inbreds wanting to kill the bar owner. A fun town Nimbin wasn't. Not even for a quarter of a million dollars worth of gold.
G’day. You’ve no doubt read a lot of things about me and my books over the years written by other people. Well, this is the truth. I grew up in Bondi in Sydney, Australia. I went to Bondi Beach Public School then on to Randwick Boys High. I left school at 14, did a few odd jobs then a trade as a butcher, mainly in the Eastern suburbs before finally working as a boner in various meatworks around the inner city with two trips to Ross River meatworks at Townsville, Queensland thrown in. I gave up boning after a hindquarter fell on me tearing the tendons in my right arm. I always liked writing letters and reading, so while I was on worker’s compensation I did three writing courses at the WEA, Worker’s Education Authority.
Robert died of cancer at his home in Terrigal, New South Wales.
"I want to dedicate this book to two footballers: Andrew Johns and Wendell Sailor." Yep, I was chuckling before the actual story began!
High Noon in Nimbin was the second adventure I took with big, red-headed Queenslander. Once again, it was the audio book for me. Gotta say, Les has grown on me, and I think the bloke makes an ace travelling partner.
The story see's Les wandering up the coast of NSW and he drops by some locations that many Aussies (or folk who've backpacked/camped along it) will recognise. I loved revisiting the Green Cathedral through Les' eyes, despite the missus stating that the pulpit was wood, not stone! I can't remember myself, but I was enjoying the story too much to care!Eventually Les ends up in Nimbin helping out with the 'No Dance' nightclub. The ending threw me off quite a bit (I actually expected him to wake up from a drug-induced hallucination) but it played out well despite the brutal genre hop from comedy to action.
Looking forward to carpooling with Mr. Les Norton again soon!
This was my first book by Robert G Barrett and it was quite entertaining to hear the latest tale of Les Norton, a very ocker man. There is a bit a swearing and a few fist fights between the blokes but in all in good fun!
Les has a wedding to go to that he was reluctant to attend but when the groom asked him a favour, to drive a friend who had no transport that clinched it for him and he decided to go. He also had a problem with a frog who he named Fabio so when he asked his friend Eddie to help get rid of it there was another favour to do up in Nimbin.
It was worth the read and I will be reading another in this series.
Typical Barrett, typical Norton. The big Queenslander gets a frog "hit" and as payment has to go Dj in a dodgey club in Nimbin. The usual stuff, Norton in fights that he always wins, porking a few chicks a long the way, winning a few and losing a few but generally ending up on top or in front. you've rad them before, and the books are written like they're set to a clock.
But they are fun, written in a voice that cannot be mistaken for anything other than Australian. They are tongue-in-cheek, cheeky, rude, sexist at times. Blokey sort of stuff and always a fun light read between the heavier stuff. A change of pace.
Yet another great Barrett/Les Norton tale - probably a little hard going if your not an Aussie or familiar with the land of the kanga's ; but a great fun read if you are !
