At her father’s funeral, Wendy Moylan is confronted by Randall Whitmore, her dad’s corrupt business partner who gives her a choice—pay her father’s outstanding debts within sixty days or marry him. Penniless, Wendy embarks on a desperate quest to locate hidden gold, deep in the deserts of New Mexico Territory. She enlists Kurt Jordan as her guide, a stubborn and impatient cowboy who holds Wendy’s future in his hands. Danger threatens as they search for treasure in hostile Indian lands, racing against a deadline. Will God allow her to discover the gold she seeks, or does an unexpected treasure await?
I loved the setting and how the author is able to take readers back in time. Wendy grabbed my attention immediately when she has to deal with her dad’s death. It is very hard on her but that’s only the beginning of her troubles. Her dad’s business partner is trying to take everything away from her unless she can come up with a lot of money. The author takes the story in a direction that I found exciting. Will the rumor of buried treasure be real? Can Wendy save her inheritance or will God direct her to something different? With the threat of having to marry someone she doesn’t love she searches for someone to be her guide as she starts her journey for a lost treasure. I did like Kurt but wasn’t sure he would actually help Wendy out. The author really surprised me with a few turns in the book. The faith thread is good and a great lesson in listening to God. Another big lesson in the story is about being tested. We can get caught up in our own selfishness that we ignore what God is saying to us. Wendy was so sure God told her to go find the gold, but maybe He brought her to this place to test her. I loved this part of the story and how the author allows readers to share those feelings of doubt and be shown that God has a plan for each of us. I will say I am becoming a big fan of western stories after reading this one. Great book and beautiful story of surrendering all to God.
