Josh Lambright needs to get away—everything reminds him of the loss of his beautiful wife, Sara. His two young children, too, are suffering. Seeking a new beginning, Josh moves the three of them to Indiana to live with his widowed mother. Upon arrival, Josh discovers his mother is much more feeble than he remembers. He fears their arrival is a burden to her, so he pursues household help.
Lucy Oyer cannot abide her father any longer. Living with him has soured her on any hope of a romance of her own. She dreams of escape and is overjoyed when she hears of the position at the Lambright farm. She gets the job and quickly falls in love with Josh’s two young children. Josh’s mother, however, is a different story. But Lucy is determined to win her over. When Lucy’s father arrives and demands she come home, Josh steps in with a shocking solution. While Lucy appreciates his help, she fears the greater implications if she agrees. Dare she risk her heart for Josh’s offer?
At times I end up selecting a book or novella that will, for me personally, be difficult to read. This was one of those times BUT the story is a VERY good one. Brenda Maxfield consistently writes novellas with substance. You read without a feeling of "Gee, I wish there were more characters" or Gee, I wish the pace was not so fast." Be careful--the little girl in this one will steal your heart.
What a good story I thought it was very entertaining and had a topic that was current. The negative part of the story was tastefully written and the positive part of the story had you over the moon sharing in their happiness. Always a joy to read a Brenda Maxfield story. Get your copy today
I love this story. It’s warm and funny, sad and happy. I truly hated to see it come to an end. Some books don’t give us an epilogue; this one does. It ties up all of the loose ends in a perfectly happy way. I know The Recent Widower is one of those stories I’ll revisit years from now.
This author brings to life the real problem of abuse. However, as usual things get better, but it take quite a bit of courage for Lucy to leave her home and when she chooses to return out of respect for her father, it brings Josh full circle.
Forgiveness is the word God has me concentrating on this year and this story gave me a lot to contemplate. Two widowers, one widow, and four children, two young and two adult, make for interesting quandries to resolve.
Amish man with two young children and a farm needs mother's helper. Young Amish adult needs to declare her independence which is not done by single maids in Amish culture. Can the two find away to help each other?
I love the wholesome story and how God enters into the happiness of the total family. I love how prayer to the One True God is the foundation of the family life. Thank you for writing this book!😍
I appreciate the author’s sensitivity handling issues like grief and abuse. I was happy to see Lucy find love and acceptance when it was lacking for so long.
Always enjoy Brenda’s writing. Love and faith are what make life. The trials and hurt just show that with prayer, trust and trying you can have a blessed life.
