Fritzi and Otto are chosen: Fritzi is the champion, and Otto is her protector, but while the bonding ceremony went as planned and nobody died, something still wasn't right with their bond. But after a dream, and a few nightmares, they find that there is still a plot to destroy the Black Forest's magic.

In this second and final book of the series. Fritzi and Otto discover a plot, who and why, and travel to find the two stones before...spoiler.

I can't give away too much, but honestly, this felt too quick, as if the first book was originally the only and longer, but was spread out into two, thus making it feel as if not a lot of thought went into this story and its plotline.

It wasn't bad, just blah. The 1, 2, 3, instead of 1, a, b; 2, c, d; etc...

The number of borderline adult scenes leaves me wondering if that was just filler to make the book longer. They weren't graphic but those and the violence, and there's a few, make this suitable for readers sixteen and older.

It did wrap up the series, but of course, there's enough story/world for (I hope not) a spin-off.

While I adored the first book, this one fell extremely flat for me. I felt like we lost the plot completely. The first book was filled with battles between good and evil with complex themes and history sprinkled in. This book was more about the characters and their relationships with barely any action at all and barely any talk of the complex themes that created this story to begin with. It was still a solid ending, but I feel like this book was rushed.

This just was kind of blah to me. The first book was better. I just did not really feel that invested in the story and the romance was meh to me.

I literally finished book 1, The Night of the Witch, earlier this morning and loved every second of it; however, its sequel, The Fate of Magic, fell somewhat flat.

The Night of the Witch was action packed and explored many complex themes, such as how oftentimes the face of evil is apathy. In comparison, The Fate of Magic had a slow start and centered more around the characters and their relationships with one another than the fight of good vs. evil.

I spent the majority of this book waiting for something to happen. I still liked the characters and it was good to see how they embraced their destines (or rather how they created their own), but there wasn’t any real feeling around them. In the first book, I felt Fritzi’s fear and her rage; I felt her losses and her grief; I felt her hope and her drive to survive and to create a better world for everyone in it. However, I wasn’t able to emotionally connect to her or the other characters in this book. Something was missing.

There was also far too much giggling.

I did enjoy the interactions between characters, though, and I was pleased to see more of Cornelia and Brigitta; I liked that they were more involved in the story this time around. I also appreciated the insight Fritzi developed as she conferred with the goddesses, but I can’t say more about that without giving away spoilers.

Overall, it was a solid enough conclusion to a duology that had a very strong start. I just didn’t love it as much as I did the first book.

Thank you NetGalley and Sourcebooks Fire for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This, friends, is how you write a duology! This book was absolutely fantastic, and I am so grateful for the chance to read it early.

The plot, the pacing, the characters, the magic, the romance, all of it was so well executed. I wish this was a longer series, only because I want more of this world and these characters. Everything wrapped up so nicely. It was refreshing.
I don't want to say too much because I don't want to spoil anything, but this book was perfect. This duology as a whole is one of the best I've read!

*Thoughts*

The Fate of Magic is the second and final installment in authors Sara Raasch, and Beth Revis's Witch and Hunter duology. This is a series that features co-protagonists, Otto Ernst and Friederika Kirch. Fritzi is a champion for Holda. After escaping the clutches of Dieter Kirch, the sadistic leader of the witch hunters and her brother, Fritzi and Otto have taken refuge among the witches of the Black Forest. Fritzi is finally ready to assume her place on the council as the coven’s goddess-chosen champion.

I’m hovering between three and four but I think I’ll round up.

This book is almost everything one could want from a YA Romantasy: betrayal, magic, found family, and love.

I'm telling you now. I would ride or die for Otto. He never wavers in his love and faith in Fritzi. It's them against the world always. He is 100% book-boyfriend material.

Fritzi struggles a lot in this book. But luckily she did not try to shoulder it all alone. She grew to trust those around her and genuinely did all she could to try to change the world for the better.

The writing was easy to follow and made for a quick read. I do wish the ending wasn't quite so rushed but overall I had a good time.

Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Fire for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Wow! What a conclusion to the duology! Review to come! 🌿

(FINAL REVIEW:)

Rather fitting that I read this at the beginning of October when a year ago, I ended the month with the first book in the duology. This was a fantastic ending to what was a wonderful witch/witch hunter duology set in medieval Germany. I loved the development of events that Raasch and Revis came up here, and the deeper dive into Fritzi and Otto’s relationship was just so sweet. ❤️

The stakes are so much higher in this second book and at times I wish there was a bit of break for the character since it felt like nonstop action for them. Fritzi had some wonderful character development and Otto’s devotion to her was just swoon worthy. 😍

What I really loved was the inclusion into ancient and Roman Germany in the plot. As a history lover, I really appreciated this and can see the research both authors did for this part of the book. 🏛️

As much as I loved this conclusion, I did feel like it would’ve been nice to have some time to breath for the characters just because I felt so bad for them going from one thing to another. 😅

Big thank you goes to Sourcebooks Fire and NetGalley for accepting my request to read this in exchange for an honest review. And big thank you goes to the authors, Raasch and Revis for writing a FANTASTIC YA historical fantasy! 💜

Publication date: October 1, so go get the completed series today!

Overall: 4.5/5 ⭐️

summary: Night of the Witch book two

thoughts: this is WAY better than the first book. exponentially, weirdly better. I liked the characters more, and the MCs were more interesting when they weren’t worried about whether the other person liked them or not. it’s so much better for them to just be in love and make out and there weren’t any stupid miscommunications with their feelings or whatever. and there were some great themes woven into the fantasy element! and it was well-paced!! not necessarily worth it to get through book one so you can read this, but it was pretty dang good!

Action packed ending. Love the relationship between Otto and Fritzi. The relationship between witches and their gods is very interesting and Otto figuring out his own. The audio with is very well narrated. The multiple POV can be irritating if one has a stronger narration but I felt it was done well. The group of found family is heart warming especially the little cousin I love her personality. It's the ending that's needed and I enjoyed this story very much.

The Fate of Magic is book two of the Witch and Hunter series and I have been dying to get my hands on this book since I turned the last page of book one. If you haven't read / finished that book yet, I encourage you to stop now and go finish before you read this any further as this book does pick up right after so my review will do the same.

After Fritzi escapes from Dieter, she and Otto are now with the witches of the Black Forest. She's finally ready to take her place on the council having been chosen as the goddess Holda's champion but she also questions herself continuously. As she and Otto try to learn more about their connection and magic, they realize that there is a danger they never planned for and Dieter is at the center of it.

I thought this installment was really well done. As a duology, I never know if the story is going to feel too short and rushed because I'm expecting a trilogy but this actually felt perfect. There was plenty of action with these characters to keep the story moving and it centered around Fritzi and Otto trying to figure out, with the rest of the group, exactly as the title states - the fate of magic. The secondary characters are well-developed too which help to keep the story moving because not only do you have Dieter coming back into the picture, but with the supporting characters of Hilde, Liesel, Cornelia, Alois, etc. helping Fritzi and Otto along, there is more of a group effort to stop Dieter.

I also loved the progression of the relationship between Otto and Fritzi. Not only were they Champion / Protector but the love story for these two...it was perfectly done in my opinion. I thought the whole bonding ceremony and sharing of magic was a great reflection on how they were with each other and what lengths they were willing to go to in order to support and protect one another.

Ultimately, I thought this duology was very well done. If you're looking for a series that has plenty of magic, an enemies-to-lovers romance, lots of action and a story that will keep you turning the pages, consider picking this one up.

This is a very sad 2 star review for me because I really enjoyed the first book. This book picks up a short time after the end of the first book and the main character seems to have a different personality entirely. I am taking into consideration that she has a forced bond with her evil brother. She also has a chosen bond with Otto/ the person she loves. What I enjoyed about the first book was the realistic feel of Fritzi’s exhaustion, hope, and the way her romance didn’t over take the threat they were facing. Fritzi’s flip flopping from wanting magic to be free and feeling like it was wrong was confusing and impacted her dialogue in a way that felt very unrealistic. The plot seemed very rushed and stitched together. The authors also threw in some other characters to add to the narrative, but didn’t give them enough depth for it to matter. The most enjoyable part of this book was the way Otto grew and questioned his religion and learned about his strengthens. Even then he is just a supporting character to Fritzi, who isn’t a round enough character to hold up the narrative of these books.

I barely remembered what happened in the first book, but I remembered loving it and being so excited for this book to come out. Luckily for me, this book does a great job on refreshing your membory and connecting into the first book seamlessly.

We jump right off into the action of this book, and have our two main characters falling deeper into their relationship, while also forging a bond (literal) that will allow them to provide magic to all, not just the witches. It was fast paced and didn't slog in many areas at all, which I really appreciated.

My only complaint is that from what I remembered of book one, I feel like this could have been one standalone, but am not too upset that I got a second book. It just felt like the plot had to be extended to justify the second book. Either way, I was happy to be back in this medieval world of witches and hunters set in the Black Forest of Germany.

I didn’t really love the story of this book as much as I loved the first one. It was mainly just a redo of the first book with the same villain and the same battles. Although, it was still beautifully written and I love Fritzi so much!

However, I was BEYOND moved by the message this story gives readers. Magic isn’t something only chosen people should have access to, but everyone has the ability to choose to use it. Everyone can choose their own path in life, their own destiny. I believe in that 100%! You can be whoever you wanna be during your life. Such a beautiful message!!

So sad for this series to be over, but I love a good duology!!

Well this was a sequel I guess? So much happened but nothing at the same time. The plot was a, b, c without development or a journey in between. The first book was so well developed and almost twice as long- if this was written like that it would easily have been 5 stars.
I do love the fresh take on magic with heavy historic German culture and phrases.
The story was wrapped up but I still want more.

This book is a phenomenal sequel that truly raises the stakes. It’s time for witches to reclaim their true power, and this book delivers on every front! Otto has officially stolen my heart—he’s my new book boyfriend, and his devotion is everything. “There is fear in love because love is so deeply powerful that it can hurt.” His words are soul-stirring, and his character arc is just perfect. Fritzi remains as incredible as ever; I loved her passion, her drive, and the fierce magic she wields throughout the story.

While the enemies-to-lovers tension between Otto and Fritzi was more of a focus in the first book, I adored how they’ve grown as a unit in this sequel. Their relationship deepened beautifully, showing how they rely on each other and grow in love through their bond. It was heartwarming to see them work together as partners.

Liesel, Fritzi’s cousin, was an absolute delight! Her fiery antics and pyro tendencies had me laughing out loud, making her a standout and memorable side character.

The book is packed with powerful messages about growth and transformation: “Everyone has access to the ability to change and grow and become. You only have to reach for it.” The journey of reclaiming lost power is beautifully woven into the plot, making the story both empowering and unforgettable.

Just as good as book 1 - this is THE BEST fantasy duology I’ve read and I have read some great ones - One Dark Window and Divine Rivals. The romance, the witchcraft, the history, the villain — it was all written perfectly and I absolutely could not put this book down. I was invested in the fates of the main characters and of the world they lived in. The villain was so unsettling and the wild magic and dark magic was portrayed in such a vivid and descriptive way. The world building was easy to follow yet interesting and intricate. This duology is MAGICAL 💫

Aunque tiene partes de mucha acción y cosas que están genial no me ha enganchado tanto como el primero y no sé por qué.... El final ha sido como muy de golpe y siento que en realidad han dado muchas vueltas a lo mismo. Pero bueno
