The enemy may have changed, but the battle between good and evil burns hotter than ever.

Hatred for Riven has sustained Tarak this long. But only Waverly's love can give him the strength to claim eternity with her....
I'm not exactly sure when I fell in love with books. Probably on my mother's knee listening to her read Dr. Seuss to me. I do remember that I was barely old enough to cross the street by myself when I discovered the delights of the local library. Could anything be more wonderful than spending summer days surrounded by stacks of Nancy Drew mysteries? Over the years I fell in love with Victoria Holt, Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, and J.R.R. Tolkien just to name a few. I read poetry, essays, biographies, and plays. In fact, I read anything I could get my hands on.
Years later (no, I'm not admitting how many) I'm still an avid reader, and my tastes are still as varied as they were in my youth, which I suppose helps to explain why I enjoy writing regency historicals under the name of Deborah Raleigh, as well as my contemporary paranormals as Alexandra Ivy. For now that is enough to keep me busy, but who knows what the future might hold!
I do have a few other loves in my life besides reading and writing, the most important being my unbelievably patient husband, David, and my two sons, Chance and Alexander. Without their constant support and belief in me, I never could have been able to follow my dreams. They are truly my heroes.
Mermaids, deceit, imprisonment and vampires should have had me blissfully sinking into this. I've very much enjoyed a number of books in this series, this one sadly didn't exactly hit the spot. Some of the dialogue had me wrinkling my nose a little and didn't entirely work, that being said there were moments that made me smile.
Despite being connected to the previous book, reading this as a standalone isn't an issue.
This author has penned an exciting, addictive paranormal series that is above all else fun ! Yes I know there are obstacles to overcome so that these Vampires can get their happy ever after but I just adore that no matter how long between books I'm always pulled right back into this world. Tarak escaped his imprisonment at the end of the last book Darkness Returns and this starts right after as he's loose and searching for a way to get his revenge. I had no idea what to expect going in but thoroughly enjoyed meeting new species . If you wonder how this author can include Mermaids who can get one over on one as powerful as Tarak then prepare to have your expectations met and actually exceeded. Tarak survived his long imprisonment only because Waverly was commanded by Riven, her King to feed him but he has no idea that they share a common hatred of Riven. Tarak is tracking Inga, the Ogress who helped keep him imprisoned but has no idea the Mer Warriors are hunting him but when they arrive he's more than ready to bring it on ! The author has done an excellent job of transforming the angry, tortured soul that Tarak is and turning him into someone who can embrace and accept that Waverly and indeed others he thinks betrayed him actually care about him. The romance between the couple whilst not instant ( hurray !) is knee buckling and worked oh so well. Of course the bad guy gets his comeuppance and you won't believe exactly who starts that chain of events ! What I can say is Levet is back as his glorious, bumbling, magical and opinionated self. Plus my favourite Styxx, is here as he struggles to maintain his Kingly dignity but fails repeatedly and that always makes me smile. Fans of the series will enjoy this book and I suspect be as eager for more as I am. This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
Alexandra Ivy had me at Levet, but I’ve got to admit the pairing between Tarak, a vampire who has been imprisoned for 5 centuries, and Waverly, a mer-royal who had to feed his thirst during his imprisonment, made for some great reading.
You, as the reader, are thrust into a marvelous world where vampires, weres, mer-people, ogres and, maybe last on my list but not least, gargoyles become real. Real characters that you route for, laugh with and yes, even some you can’t wait for them to be squashed from existence. That is the ultimately what keeps me coming back time and time again. Ivy’s ability to connect the reader with her worlds, characters and wonderfully original imaginings.
I received this ARC copy of Beware the Darkness from Kensington Books - Lyrical Press. This is my honest and voluntary review. Beware the Darkness is set for publication Aug. 20, 2019.
Tarak has awakened from his imprisonment and he is ready to decimate those who enslaved him. But he also has a strange attachment to the angelic female who fed him over the centuries, staving off the madness that should have consumed him.
Waverly is a member of the Mer Royal family. She has been forced to obey her ruler, who ousted her father. She made sure the vampire survived, but now she feels an affinity towards him.
Levet the gargoyle and a certain female part ogre also appear, which really amps up the comedy in the book. They are such a mismatched pair! Superb reading and a great way to switch off the world!
Beware the Darkness is book 14 in the Guardians of Eternity series and while I enjoyed it I did have some issues. Tarak has been held prisoner for 500 hundred years. He was released at the end of the last book and is focused on revenge. Waverly is the mermaid princess who feed him throughout his time as prisoner. I loved their connection and although they have known each other for so long there was still so much to learn. Now for my issues, the beginning was really slow and boring, I didn't like how Tarak and Waverly's story was split between Levet and Inga. While I loved the fact that Inga learned the truth and honestly the revelation made me cry, I didn't like how their story just ended without any resolution. I still have no idea what happened to Levet and where did he go. Also since Chiron spent so long looking for Tarak I would have loved seeing them reunite. As I said it was another enjoyable addition to this series but I feel like there were a lot of loose ends.
I began reading Guardians of Eternity back in 2014. I have always stated that it is one of my all time favorite paranormal reads and this story just affirms that. In this one we meet the mer-folk and the fraud king that holds the throne. He has imprisoned Tarak a clan leader and is using his powers to hold the throne. Tarak escapes and his only focus is to kill the one who held him prisoner. He meets Princess Waverly the mermaid who was in charge of feeding him to keep him alive. With her help, they devise a plan to rid Riven of the throne. We meet old friends in this story my favorite Styx, Anasso of Vampires and of course of Levet the crazy little Gargoyle. This story take a twist when Inga half mermaid and half orgre becomes aware the she is of royal mermaid blood. This is a great addition to the Guardians series and can't wait till Ms. Ivy releases another. Advanced Reader Copy provided by the Publisher via NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Beware the Darkness by Alexandra Ivy is book 14 in the Guardians of Eternity. This is the story of Tarak and Waverly. I have read the previous book which helped me to fully enjoy this one but with that said I did feel you could make this a standalone book if you wish to do so. Tarak was taken kept a prisoner for hundreds of years. During that time, Waverly a mermaid princess who feed him and kept him from totally going insane. Now he is free and wish to get his revenge on the one that enslaved him. Waverly and Tarak are now dealing with their feelings that they have grown through the years and how they can move forward but with this revenge make that impossible? Enjoyed their story.
I honestly hadn’t realised how much I missed this series and Ms Ivy’s incredible writing style until I read Darkness Returns. With that story, I was once again thrown into the complex and dangerous world of the paranormal and all the things that go bump in the night.
Beware the Darkness, picks up where Darkness Returns left off, and follows Tarak’s pursuit of revenge and justice for his centuries of captivity. But this isn’t just another Vampire story; readers are introduced to more species of the paranormal world and the ongoing fight for supremacy in their volatile and ego driven culture. I initially wasn’t sure how I felt about the inclusion of Mere-beings in this genre, but Ms Ivy’s introduction of these beings was done seamlessly.
Tarak and Waverly are fabulous characters who have endured a forced companionship over the years, with their comparable hatred of Riven and Waverly's compassion and guilt over Tarak's suffering, being the eventual catalyst for their explosive romantic connection. Great world building, a fast-paced and exciting plot and a passion that has had centuries to simmer and burn. These are all the reasons this is a must read for anyone who has loved this series and Ms Ivy’s writing. I can’t wait for more!
Tarak was about to tell his people something bad about their leader but before he could he's handed over to Riven and held captive for 500 years. Only Waverly came to help him get through the time in captivity and feed him her blood. But she didn't realize that by feeding him her blood, she was making Riven more powerful. Now that Tarak is no loner imprisoned, all he wants is revenge on Riven but Waverly ends up being more to him than just a way to get that revenge.
Riven was the leader of the Mer-people. He was the one that was able to use the royal trident (Tryshu) but Tarak suspected that he was only able to use it because of a spell so he and Waverly set out to prove that and get the royal trident out of his hands. While they are trying to stop Riven, they get closer and realize that they feel a lot for each other. The romance was not instantaneous but it was great. I loved seeing a very grumpy, revenge seeking Tarak become the gentle, loving, hero of this story.
I really liked a lot of the secondary characters along the way in this book as well. Inga, an ogress who helped put a spell on the cell Tarak was held in for so long was an interesting character. Styxx is the new leader of the vampires and has his hands full with tracking down Tarak and helping him but he was an interesting character as well. The huge twist that happens towards the end of this book was great! I never saw that coming but it sure put a smile on my face. I loved the ending to this story.
Thank you netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review. I wasn't impressed with this paranormal romance as I have been by the author's other works. Slow to pick up and heavy on the world building. Characters lacked depth and I didn't find either protagonist interesting. Just not for me.
So happy this series was brought back. If you have not read the previous book this one will not make a lot of sense. For adults 18+. I truly loved this book and wish the next one was already here. I liked all the characters except the one whom you're not supposed to like... The H&h were great people with wonderful personalities especially the h. Always looking out for others. Now Tarak was hell bent on revenge but I can't blame him but he was a bit distracted at first and fought off his instinct about his mate but this wouldn't be a Alexandra Ivy book if he didn't figure things out and get his mate. Now for the bad person and no I won't say their name here (read to find out...lol) ... He was the biggest mystery.... How did he get his power and why did he need a vampire imprisoned? This is the what you have to listen carefully to figure out. Now we still have a few others who are very important to the story. Did you read the last book? Good... Remember mean convincing Inga? Remember what made her so mean? Well now you just have to read to find out what it takes to get her not to be so mean. I'll tell you this... We have one HEA and one HFN but who and why. All in all another great book from the Guardians of Eternity series.
I am so pleased with the twist of direction the author has brought to this series. The vampire world seemingly had run it's course but then...BAM ! We learn about this group of exiled Vamps. Of course the King and his minions are still somewhat involved. But these are fresh characters and fresh adventures. I mean, Mer people, ogres, witches, vampires and of course that love to hate gargoyle, Levet.
Tarak has an interesting past. Newly released from his prison, he seeks revenge. But the woman befriending him and giving him sustenance for 500 years has also earned a right to be listened to. Waverly tries to turn Tarak away from destroying the Mer King. Together they set out on quest for truth and justice.
Great world building. Loved learning of the different creatures and their customs. I'm looking forward to more stories in this series.
*Complimentary copy provided via Netgalley for an honest review.
This is Tarak's story which picks up from the previous book. Tarak has been ensnared by an evil Merman, Riven, for the last 500 years. Tarak's prison is destroyed and Tarak escapes. Tarak has net his mate, Waverly, but was unable to believe it as he was so bent on revenge. Filled with betrayal, suspense, our Anasso Styx, an Ogress wronged, our laugh out loud gargoyle Levet, make for a great story. Tarak and Waverly.get their HEA. I did find the ending a bit rushed, but all in all, a great story. There are some hints about Inga and Levet, and maybe we will read about them being a mated pair??? I can only hope! I do so love Levet! Lol. 4 stars***

After five centuries of captivity, there is only one thing more precious to vampire Tarek than his newfound freedom…the promise of revenge. But his quest for justice against Riven, the mermaid who drained his power in order to make himself king is interrupted by the beautiful mermaid princess who kept him sane. She hoped he’d return to his own kind and enjoy the rest of his immortal life, but then Waverly also hoped she might one day stop dreaming about the darkly handsome vampire. Instead they are drawn into an unlikely alliance and a passion that eclipses all her fantasies.
Be prepared to be swept away by the tide in this powerful and stunning new ‘Guardians of Eternity’ novel. As per the norm for this exhilarating series, the characters are strong, take charge and easily captures readers’ imaginations as well as their hearts. Tarek and Waverly explode from the pages with a vibrant intensity that ensures that readers sit up and take notice of their sizzling chemistry and their gripping stories and lots of turbulent, gripping emotions such as revenge, greed, fear, passion, love and insecurities bring this story to life.
The plot is fast paced and continuously keeps the suspense and excitement building throughout as Tarek seeks his revenge, Levet tries to protect a mermaid, ogre hybrid and rescue another damsel from a prison, the Anasso searches for Tarek and Waverly tries to protect her people from a cunning, greedy man that is somehow stealing the Kingship from the rightful ruler. Lots of non-stop excitement keeps readers glued to the pages and on the edge of their seats and the stunning twists keeps them guessing throughout this riveting romance.
Tarak appreciate the emotions his woman shows, "he felt Waverly stiffen. “Of course she was.” Tarak glanced at her in surprise. Was she jealous? The thought was absurdly satisfying." I liked this book, I liked Tarak.
I enjoyed this little novella. Loved the beautiful happy ending. Levet was entertaining as always. He got to act the KISA (Knight in Shining Armor) and save the day again. My only complaint was about poor Tarak. He wasn't that smart. And he knew that too. So I ended up forgiving him.
If the next book is the love story between Levet and the Queen of Mer-folk 😍 I'll do a happy dance 💃🏽
A little short for my tastes but I really enjoyed the overall storyline and how the h / H came together to find their happy ending. I'm looking forward to where the story arc will be heading next.
With magic, betrayal, action, surprises, and true love, this story hits all the right notes. The varied and wonderful characters, including some much loved favourites, help make this a memorable book that will be reread many times!

Beware The Darkness is the 14th volume in the Guardians of Eternity series by Alexandra Ivy. It’s the second volume of that new arc of which I reviewed the first volume Darkness Returns (https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... ).
Beware The Darkness is a direct sequel to Darkness Returns in which our actual hero Tarak was freed after a 5-centuries imprisonment. When the story begins, we know he’s vanished into thin air. The story needs a bit more time to begin between our heroes compared to other times. Indeed, in the first chapters, Alexandra Ivy focuses on two characters of the entire series who’ll have an important part in the book: Styx and Levet. By the bye the whole book places emphasis on several characters, good ones as the bad guy of which we‘ve known the name since the previous volume. Concerning our heroes, we meet them for the first time here.
So Tarak is a vampire. He was a clan chief and everybody thought him dead. Because of his long captivity, Styx fears he’ll be a danger for everyone. However we soon realize that’s not the case at all and the only thing motivating him is revenge. And if he could stay sane, it’s because of only one person: our heroine, Waverly. She’s a mermaid and during all his imprisonment, she was the one feeding him. We soon understand there has been for centuries a light love-hate relationship. They are very attracted to each other, however the conditions never allowed to exploit this attraction to its full. At the beginning of the story, our hero is still too much irritated by the bad guy to accept his feelings toward Waverly. The later, however, is very clear about her motivation, be it at the beginning or after. So it’s the hero’s obstinacy that causes a problem, that and his arrogance that makes us want to shake him at time.
The book is full of action and big surprises, from the beginning to the end. All the readers will be surprised by the story’s evolution and its resolution. The rest of the series is already programmed and will feature a character met in Darkness Returns: Ulric, the hero Chiron’s right-hand man. Concerning Beware The Darkness, when we close the book, we have all the answers to the questions we were thinking about in the previous volume. What’s more, because of this forced return in the past, we have again a vision more terrifying about the former Anasso and his abuses. Once more Alexandra Ivy proves us she knows how to reinvent herself while keeping the elements that made her success: likeable characters, strong heroines, secondary characters we love following and bad guys we want to see dead.
The love story keeps a central place in the story. So we have a beautiful evolution of the realization of each one’s feelings, of the sensuality, some love scenes that arrive lately for evident reasons and of course, a great HEA we believe in.
It would be useless to say more without spoiling. All I have to say is that once more, Alexandra Ivy succeeded in bringing me in her novel and once begun, difficult to stop as I so wanted to know what would happen to our different characters. If I have a reproach to make it’s the fact we don’t see enough of the still present interaction between our previous couples, especially concerning Styx and Darcy. Of course he speaks about her but we don’t see her anymore and it’s too bad.
You’ll have understood that I loved this story and I recommend it. Fans will be thrilled to discover Tarak and Waverly. I can’t wait to discover Ulric’s story in Conquer The Darkness planned in December 2019.
The enemy may have changed, but the battle between good and evil burns hotter than ever in this scintillating new installment in Alexandra Ivy’s Guardians of Eternity series.
There is only one thing more precious to vampire Tarak than his newfound freedom after five centuries of captivity, and that’s the promise of revenge. At last, he can destroy Riven, the merman who has drained his power in order to make himself king. REVIEW: BEWARE THE DARKNESS is the fourteenth instalment in Alexandra Ivy’s contemporary, adult GUARDIANS OF ETERNITY paranormal, fantasy romance series. This is vampire Tarak, and mermaid princess Waverly’s story line. BEWARE THE DARKNESS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.
NOTE: BEWARE THE DARKNESS pick up immediately after the events of DARKNESS RETURNS.
Told from several third person perspectives including Tarak, Waverly and Levet, BEWARE THE DARKNESS follows the search for vampire Tarak. Five hundred years earlier Tarak was betrayed by the former Anasso (king of the vampires) and found himself imprisoned and used as a blood slave by the new king of the mer-people. Throughout the years Tarak would hallucinate believing a beautiful angel came for to visit, an angel who would feed our story line hero. Enter Waverly, mermaid princess, and the woman with whom Tarak would fall in love. Desperate to take down the man who destroyed his life, Tarak goes in search only to be stopped by our story line heroine. What ensues is the building relationship between Tarak and Waverly, and the potential fall-out as Tarak is determined to kill the man that betrayed them all.
Meanwhile Waverly struggles with Tarak’s need to kill the king of the mer-people, a man who is currently holding her sister hostage, a woman who protects and guards the infants with her life. With no idea where Sabrina is hidden, Waverly fears to kill the king will also kill the sister she loves.
The relationship between Tarak and Waverly has been building for several hundred years when Waverly was forced to feed Tarak, an in effort to keep him strong enough to feed the mer-people king. Tarak, believing Waverly was nothing more than a illusion, is fearful that Waverly is nothing more than a trick to recapture our story line hero. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including the mer-people King Riven, and his guard Rimm; Rivet and ogress Inga; Waverly’s sister Sabrina, as well as a number of mer-people, demons, Puck the imp, and the current king of the vampires Styx and his mate Lilah, and vampire Chiron.
BEWARE THE DARKNESS is a story of betrayal, vengeance, power and control; a story of family, love and friendship. The premise is intriguing and engaging; the romance is seductive; the characters are colorful and charismatic.
A massive castle along the remote cliffs of the Himalayan Range, 1500’s Asia. There was a rumor that the King of Vampires, The Anasso was addicted to feeding on prey with opium and alcohol in their system. It was common knowledge that tainted blood would eventually drive the vampire mad. Being a loyal servant of the King, Tarak refused to believe these rumors. For it was he, who brought his clan to the Anasso, for the overwhelming fact he believed in what the King was trying to accomplish. However, during the evening fest, Tarak had to come to terms that The Anasso was addicted to tainted blood. Now, Tarak has to come to terms…the one person he thought he could trust was actually an enemy from within. But first Tarak must find a way to escape the hell that he finds himself in.
Beware The Darkness is the 14th book in the Guardians of Eternity, written by Alexandra Ivy, picks up right where we left off in book 13th Darkness Returns. Tarak is freed after 500 years in captivity. Learning that the old Anasso was dead and his friend that he thought as a brother was now the King, gave him peace. However, there is one thing he must do before he goes home to his people…revenge.
Beware The Darkness was a quick, well=written paranormal. Giving that this book was only 191 pages long, it was surprisingly how well you came to know the characters of Tarak and Waverly.
Another great book in the Guardians of Eternity series, looking forward to the next title.
(4.5) I had some laugh out loud moments, I had some catch my breath moments wondering if someone was going to die. Loved the twist at the end (well done). Ahhh. Now I need to put my feet up and just smile. I was anxiously awaiting Tarak after he escaped in book 13. Thrilled to be able to read his story. If you like paranormal, steamy sex and some suspense, this is a great read. I think it could be read as a standalone because enough info is provided, but I feel like you will miss out on all the elements and character development that has been building. I mean we see Styx again! Yes I love Styx (vampire) . Levet (gargoyle) plays pretty prominent with Inga (Toll/Mer hybrid) as they intertwine trying to find Tarak (vampire) and make sure he isn't out to destroy the world. Tarak is of course after revenge and has Waverly (mer) who kept him sane with her blood, is with him searching for her sister. There are several story lines running through this book that all interconnect. I I am curious if we are going to see more about Inga and possibly Levet in the next book. Levet pops in most of this series, but is he coming into a little more in depth? Hmm. In any case, what ever is next, I am there! Thank you Lyrical Press, Alexander Ivy and Net Galley for the arc. All thoughts and opinions are my own and were unsolicited.
Beware the darkness is the 14th book in the series and it's better if it's not read as stand-alone. Characters and events from the previous books appear and have an impact in the story.
In my opinion, when you dedicate almost half of the story to another couple ( Levet and Inga) you should give them a happy ending too or if you don't want to do that, reduce the parts that are from their point of view. They took too much space and their story will be completed probably in the next book. Scratch that, the next book is not about them. So, why tease us about their story and feature them so heavily? Yes, they helped our main couple, without knowing it, but did we really need to see so much from Inga's point of view?
I don't feel like I have much to say about the main characters. Their story felt a little too much like wham bam thank you, ma'am. I suppose most of the bonding happened during the years he was a prisoner, but I wanted to see more of them doing what couples in paranormal romance do. I need something more to be convinced that they actually belonged together.
The reason why I am not going with a lower rating is the fact that the story had a good flow and I read it easily. I have gotten a little bit more used to this universe since this is the second book I have read and I was able to follow all the events that were happening.
Alexandra Ivy’s Guardians of Eternity series is up to book 14 with Beware the Darkness. Yet the book is original, refreshingly so, written by a gifted storyteller. While revenge is not new in books, the complications, alliances, unknowns and the gift of love keep it a page turner.
The intro of new species, as well as the continue world building that go with them is marvelous done so that the reader feels as if they are too thrust into this intricate world. There is strong characterization in the imaginative plot with Tarak seeking revenge and holding onto his bitterness only to find love in the process. Waverly is just as complex with conflicting feelings about events in her life. Several of the past characters make an appearance or are part of a subplot. Really, it was great to see them again. However, that is one reason this story would be hard to jump into the series with. Also Beware the Darkness begins right where the last book left off.
Still it is an extraordinary read. If there are any paranormal fans who haven’t experienced the Guardians of Eternity, you are missing out. Start today.
An ARC of the book was given to me by the publisher through Net Galley which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

But only Waverly’s love can give him the strength to claim eternity with her. This was a pretty good story. My only issue is that I have read very few books by this author, and I’m pretty sure none from this series, so I found myself a bit confused at points with the different characters and character types. I am assuming they were from other books but I felt like the author is assuming that you’ve read the other books first. I recommend. **I voluntarily read and reviewed this book
This book picks up exactly where the last one leaves off, so I don’t recommend diving in to this as your first book in the series. I’ve jumped in and out of the series, and while the author does a good job catching up, I enjoyed this one a lot more having met most of these characters previously.
Tarak is newly freed from his prison, having learned his lesson about the evil of the mermaid ruler. He’s determined to find his vengeance and also equally determined to ignore his affection for the mermaid princess that visited him to keep him “fed” during his captivity. Waverly, the aforementioned princess, is also in denial, but willing to do just about anything to keep her sister safe and do whatever is right for her people. Riven, the ruler of the mermaids, is doing some horrible things to her people, so when things start to indicate that he may not have been mystically chosen as he said, Tarak and Waverly team up to take him down.
Oh, and there’s also the wonderfully amusing and always catastrophe filled gargoyle sub-story going on. And the romance elements. And some visits from familiar faces. All in all, this was a nice, new spin, making me re-thing mermaids as a paranormal main character storyline. I can’t wait to see where this world goes next.
This is book 14 of the Guardian's of Eternity series and starts up basically where the last book left off. In this one we get Tarak's story after he has been released from his prison after 5 centuries. Now he is on the hunt to kill the one who held him captive all these years, Riven. But he never expected Waverly, the one who fed him all this time, to not only try to keep him alive but to help him take Riven down.
I absolutely loved this one! We got to see a new species and world that was previously not a part of these books and it was great! Waverly and Riven each have their own wants and needs and having them work out a way to get what they both want was great. I love that Tarak always manages to move beyond the things that have been done to him to do what is right and necessary. Waverly does everything she can for the ones she loves, even when it goes against what she believes is the right thing to do. But once she has other options, she takes the right path every time. She is a truly good person. They have unbelievable chemistry and I love how they put the past behind them in order to achieve what needs to be done. I even loved how Inga's story ends up!! Great read!
