A fun and quick audiobook gives us a glimpse into the life of a young pilot doing everything in his power to be chosen to go a new planet and to follow his gf, after generations of humans have lived in space ships.
I would love to read an entire series, or at least a full book based on these characters. The narration was also well done.
"Wanderlust" (part of the Sci-Fi Sizzlers series) is an exhilarating journey that masterfully blends the best of science fiction and adventure. The story is set in a richly imagined universe where interstellar travel is as routine as a morning commute, yet it manages to capture the awe and wonder of exploring the unknown. The protagonist, a daring explorer driven by an insatiable curiosity, becomes the perfect lens through which readers can experience the thrills and dangers of deep space. The plot is fast-paced and filled with unexpected twists that keep you on the edge of your seat, balancing high-octane action scenes with moments of introspective depth. The author’s ability to create vivid, immersive worlds is truly impressive, drawing you into landscapes that range from stunningly beautiful to hauntingly desolate.
What sets Wanderlust apart from typical sci-fi fare is its focus on the human condition amidst the backdrop of a vast, uncharted galaxy. The characters are richly developed, each with their own motivations and backstories that add layers to the narrative. The protagonist's journey is not just one of physical exploration but also a deep, emotional quest for meaning and belonging in a universe that often feels cold and indifferent. The dialogue is sharp and witty, capturing the camaraderie and tension among a diverse crew, each member bringing their own unique perspective to the mission. The themes of resilience, the pursuit of knowledge, and the sacrifices one must make for the greater good are thoughtfully woven into the fabric of the story.
The book’s pacing is relentless yet balanced, ensuring that readers are continuously engaged without feeling overwhelmed. The author deftly uses scientific concepts to ground the story in a believable reality, while still allowing room for the imaginative elements that make sci-fi so captivating. Whether you're a longtime fan of the genre or new to science fiction, Wanderlust offers a compelling mix of adventure, philosophical musings, and emotional depth that will leave you eagerly turning pages and pondering its themes long after you’ve finished the last chapter. It's a standout entry in the Sci-Fi Sizzlers series, showcasing the boundless possibilities of the genre.
I stunt generally read short stories. The really get around to anything of significance and don't have enough time for world building. The only exceptions being Sanderson's tie-in novellas for the Stormlight Archives.
But I do like Falconer's writing style write a bit and figured I'd give it a shot. "Wanderlust" is the but doesn't break it is the sort story mold. We spend all of our time with one character in a few days of his life brute a major event takes place. We learn enough to know what is going on but find see much happen. For example, Zac mentions his diligent preparations to succeed in his mission but we only ever see home play out a couple of them.
All in all it was a decent read but u have no desire to read all of the Sci-Fi Sizzlers.
Wanderlust is a decent little Sci Fi short story about a group of pilots selected for a dangerous mission to the planet Calbora. This apparently verdant and beautiful planet seems to be the promised land for the survivors of an exodus from earth who, generations on, now survive on a space station. Getting there is dangerous though thanks to a hazardous storm, hence the select group of pilots being tested for a mission to Calbora and back which so far no one has returned from.
It's an interesting premise and the mystery of Calbora is intriguing enough but it does mean everything pretty much hinges on the reveal and ultimately it was a bit disappointing which is a shame.
A lot. Read well and had good development, and suddenly, it was over. A real surprise, as I was really expecting it to be much longer. A good read, almost wish it had been much longer, but it is satisfying as it is. Thank you!
I want more. I feel cheated. Falcon we gives a sip of characters I wanted to know better, know more about in story lines that have potential and merit. I want more.
Falconers shorts have some great thought provoking ideas and execution to them drawing you in quickly and inciting some great scenarios to chew on. Great for a quick read with a longer effect.
It’s a good read if you have patience. The storyline had its moments, but it took a while to get to the point. Some chapters were really engaging, while others dragged on unnecessarily. The characters were interesting, but not enough to make it a page-turner. It’s a mixed bag.
I appreciated the effort that went into crafting this story, but it didn’t quite resonate with me. The plot had potential, but the execution was lacking. There were too many side plots that distracted from the main narrative. I enjoyed parts of it, but it wasn’t as cohesive as I’d hoped.
