Serendipitous Love #2

Didn't Mean to Love You: Serendipitous Love, Book 2

Rate this book
Vivienne is one of “those” people, the kind who believes in love at all costs. Broken hearts are a natural product of that, and Viv is used to dealing with it by simply ignoring the ache and moving on to a new love. But this time, she can’t seem to shake the pain - until Carter comes along, handing out easy smiles and the kind of attention that makes her not feel so fractured after all.

Everybody knows Carter as this cool, confident, charismatic guy. He has a penchant for saying just the right things at just the right times, being just the kind of friend that’s needed in the midst of sorrow. But as he and Viv embark on what was only ever intended to be a friendship, the idea of Carter as the “perfect” guy is challenged, and the real person could very well just be the next guy to break Viv’s heart.

Old hurts are unraveled, familial bonds are tested, and hearts are put on the line in this story of two people who didn’t mean to fall in love.

Please note that this is a spin-off of A Crazy Little Thing Called Love and does contain major spoilers for that title.

This one made me weepy. That was unexpected. Carter’s abandonment issues tapped into mine that are dormant in my heart. These books are amazing and I find myself falling for each character. Onto the next!!

Disliked every character, disliked the wandering plot, disliked the weepiness, disliked the utter lack of a learning curve. Disliked everything.

Let's Try to Love

I like Vivienne and Carter. I think that they each had underlying issues and was glad that they eventually got to the bottom of them, yet the way they went about it to get there was very unhealthy.

Vivienne really stood out to me in the previous book by how she was so honest with Simone and befriended her, along with Eddie; something Simone truly needed. I love how Viv was so full of love and her want for love, yet hate that she didn't seem herself worthy of true love. I get the situation with Theirry, her much older lover, bc she was young and naive to all he was doing. Yet, the way she accepted Darren and his bs, the mediocre lust he gave her, didn't sit right with me. She was a good person and it seemed like she truly needed the love of her father and just took any kind of emotional attachment to men, to fill the void of what she needed from the one man whom should've shown her love. I am glad she truly let Darren go. He was so low to do her how he did. I love the chocolate shop Viv has and how she puts her all into it.

I absolutely loved Carter in the previous book. He was an upstanding dude, yet he let his past fears interfer with him getting and having a true love of his own. I like that even with his year long crush on Viv, his Frenchy, that he saw her pain and just wanted to ease that for her. They were great at being friends, yet his yearning desire for more for her led them into a territory with his heart that he was unfamiliar with, and it almost ruined what they were building. I'm glad he took a step back and gave her time and really dealt with why he was fearful of being open with her. I loved that he was this tech/poetry/barber phenom that pretty much put his all into whatever he did. He was fine and loyal. A really good listener and advice giver. He deserved all of Viv's love she was throwing his way and after that long overdue talk with his mom, he started to be open and receptive to that love.

This was for sure a slow burn, yet filling love story. I like that we get to see more of what was going on between Roman and Simone, since this story takes place while they were building a relationship too. I'm eager to see what we get from Eddie bc he's a great friend, yet over the top, so I'm sure his story will be a good one.

I'm really loving this series and can't wait for more.

Great read. Highly recommend.

I did not think I would like Didn’t Mean To Love You but, it was actually really good. It was as emotionally exhausting as the first book. I loved Vivienne and Carter's accidental love story. I honestly didn't want it to end. Both characters were well developed and their mommy and daddy issues played a huge role in how they approached relationships. This was another great black romance by CCJ that I highly recommend.

Mind trickery is what she does.

Each time I say, "This is my favorite CCJ project." And each time she's made me out to be a liar. Christina C. Jones grows with each book she releases. In "A Crazy Little Thing Called Love," she had me with the passion and intimacy. In this book, "Didn't Mean to Love You", she has me with the passion, intimacy, and psychology of the characters.

I keep looking for paw prints: something to link CCJ with each book, but there are none. All I see are the characters. Each book is unique. Every character has individual qualities and traits. This is telling of a great author.

Carter is so captivating it makes no sense. He's sexy, passionate, mysterious and real. He's nothing like I perceived him when I met him in "A Crazy Little Thing Called Love." In his story, I get more insight to him. I understand him more. For crying out loud, I laid in my bed, tearing up at his pain that I could relate to with his upbringing! Carter is a man of little words, but of bold actions. You don't hear him, you feel him. And I was all in...with Carter.

Vivienne was fragile initially. I didn't get her at first glance. But as their story started coming together, I could accept her vulnerability. I saw beauty in her fragility. I could experience her strength. When I realized Carter's acceptance and love for her, I was able to appreciate it, too.

I thoroughly enjoyed this tale and have no doubt you'll enjoy it, too!

Carter and Viv were so cute! The title of this book was spot on because neither of these two were looking for love when it found them. Carter has commitment issues stemming from childhood, and Viv has experienced enough heartbreaks (including finding out via social media that her boyfriend was engaged) to almost have her giving up on a love she’s always wanted.

These two are neighbors and friends who find comfort in each other, eventually taking their friendship to a new level. I loved how easy it was for them to be together, in the sense that they just FELT right for each other. They had a few bumps and fights before they gave in to the love, and once they did, they were adorable!

Extra points for how amazing the friend group is and as always the smexy time is on point.

TROPES: black romance/BIPOC/OWN voices; neighbors/forced proximity; French heroine who owns a chocolate shop; hero who owns a barbershop but loves technology and poetry; great friend group; hero/heroine with emotional trauma; “I almost fought your ex for putting his hands on you”

TRIGGER WARNINGS: death of a loved one (from the past); miscarriage (mentioned on page, not between H/h); depression/alcoholism (not H/h)

Viv x Carter

"Ah, my sweet, benevolent Vivi. Always giving your heart to someone who has not asked for it.”

Vivienne feels like she just can't get it right in the love department. She loves & she loves hard. After a second failed attempt at love, she just wants to stay away. But here comes Carter who has been flirting with her since he found out they were neighbors. Of course once he found out she had a man he respectfully stepped back. But once that spot became open, he swooped in. The problem is, Carter doesn't feel like he's capable of being loved the way Viv is willing to love him.

This legit was the cutest story so far in Serendipitous Love. I was immediately invested. I hated that Viv felt so unwanted & I couldn't stand how her ex tried to play her. Thank God for friends like Eddie & Simone. I'm glad her mother was always in the corner & was so happy about the essential convo she needed to have with her dad. It was hard, but necessary. I thought Carter was the cutest & loved how he opened up about how the barbershop was his legacy, not his choice. The rebuilding of his relationship with his mom & brother was so essential to his growth. I knew his step mom was a bitter bitty 🙄 & when he poured his heart out at open mic night 🥹🥰 I just loved this two so much and I just couldn't get enough. I can't wait to watch them grow in the other books 😍

CCJ gave me all the feels with this one.

With a passion for the art of chocolate making, Viv has a thriving business. Too bad her love life isn't the same. Fresh off of a devasting blow, she finds her future in love to be bleak. A quick friendship is formed between her and her neighbor, Carter. Getting caught up is the last thing any of them want, but the heart has a mind of it's own. When past hurts flare up, will both Viv and Carter be left with a sweet..or bitter taste for love.

What can I say..CCJones has done it again. I am new to her work and thus far have read 5 of her books to date and she has never disappointed me.
This plot was emotionally charged and thought provoking. I enjoy how C Jones takes complex relationships and infuse character interactions which are natural and effortless; the characters come alive before my eyes. Viv and Carter are very well developed and their connection made for a great addition to the storyline. The timeline was also on point and blended well with Serendipitious Love book 1(This can be read as a standalone but some lil surprises of book 1 are mixed in so read book 1 first for Simone and Roman's story).

APB Perspective Review :

Carter and Viv story was one I was looking forward to, Cool sexy Carter was not the man I expected him to be , I love it when a author surprises you with their story line and she did that with Carter . Carter was a deeper soul than I ever expected him to be , the relationship with his mother and brother greatly influenced his personality I felt more that the father who raised him. Viv was lucky she met Carter when she did ,I felt she needed him , he took care of her , her relationship with her father greatly influenced her relationships with men Carter seemed perfect for her but you have to read it to see how that plays out. I enjoyed the first two books in this series and I love Carter I look forward to reading more about these characters.

It took me some time to write my review because I wanted to gather my thoughts. Didn't Mean To Love You caught me off guard, see I feel in love with the first book and thought Viv & Carter wouldn't have the same effect on me as Roman & Simone but they did. I love Christina' s ability to listen to her characters and let them tell their own story. I felt their love, pain, heartbreak and joy. The journey was great with a few unexpected surprises, you'll have to read it for yourself to find out what they are cause I don't do spoilers. Enjoy the ride that Viv, Carter and their cast if comical characters take you on!!!

Viv and Carter's accidental, but purposeful love story was such a joy to read. I honestly didn't want it to end. I enjoyed the development of the characters and the unveiling of their past that played such an impactful role in the future. The plot was well developed and, by no means, was it rushed. And if you're looking for a little steaminess....then Mrs. Jones did just that. The intimacy is hot, but as always, very tasteful.

This book was an easy 5 stars and I look forward to the next release from Christina C. Jones..

Viv and Carter's story was simply wonderful. We were first introduced to them in the book, Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Viv was Simone's friend and Carter was the barber that was interested in Simone. It hinted at them getting together and now we have their love story. Christina Jones continues to deliver wonderful books time and time again. She is able to pull emotions out of of you as you go through the drama with her characters. I can't wait to read the next book.

It was nice to be back with this lovely group of shop owners. I love the trio infernal Eddie, Simone and Vivienne. That being said I wasn’t the biggest fan of Carter and Vivienne’s love story. But that might just be because of my personal dislike of the daddy/mommy issues trope as a means of conflict to prevent the couple to commit. Despite that I did like Carter’s family story line at the end of the book.

Not Relationship Goals

After reading the first book in this series, I had little interest in a book about Carter and Vivienne. I didn’t find either of their characters to be particularly interesting or likable. Diving into their story revealed that their both saddled with baggage from strained relationships with their parents. That dysfunction made them seem perfect for each other. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a warm and fuzzy match. I’m generally turned off by stories that romanticize a woman fixing/healing a damaged man. On a brighter note, I enjoyed catching up with the other residents of Mahogany Heights.

Okay this might be my new favorite Christina C. Jones book! I absolutely love the world she created in this series that centers around Black-owned businesses. Viv and Carter gave me so many feels as they went from neighbors to friends to lovers. Viv hails from a French family-owned chocolate dynasty but her parents shipped her off to the US several years ago after she got into a tight spot. She worked hard and now she owns her own chocolate shop. I loved reading about her creations and only wish I could have been sampling them while I read. She wears her heart on her sleeve but she’s made some bad decisions when it comes to relationships so it’s hard for her to trust her instincts.

Carter owns the barber shop his dad started but he would rather be doing something with computer programming. He’s also a spoken word poet, although it takes him most of the book to actually perform his work. (It’s worth the wait.) Carter is a natural caregiver, always looking out for the people in his life, but he has a fear of abandonment so he’ll only let people get so close. So even though he’s had a crush on Vivienne for a year and even though their chemistry is explosive and even though he thinks about her constantly when they’re not together, he freaks out when she asks what they’re doing. He put Viv through the wringer and I understood his fear while also wanting to shake him.

I loved the evolution of their relationship, the way their friendship developed and then the way Viv stood up for her needs and put herself first, which then caused Carter to do a whole lot of reflecting on the things that were holding him back. I could not have loved this more!

If you’re wondering whether chocolate is used in interesting and memorable ways, the answer is an enthusiastic yes!

Note: I did struggle a bit with Viv’s dad who was a major jerk to her. I felt like she let him off the hook way too easily and I could not understand why her mom didn’t stand up for her. There were some toxic family dynamics at play, masked as “this is how family is” and I wish he’d been held accountable and then we’d been allowed to see whether he actually changed. But this may just be my own issue.

CW: heroine was cheated on in both of her serious relationships, pregnant side character and references to past miscarriage, hero’s mother was depressed and arrested for a DUI when he was a child (now sober and received therapy), hero’s brother is essentially a juvenile delinquent, hero’s father died of prostate cancer, heroine’s ex grabbed her and would not let go until hero intervened

APB Perspective Review :

We meet Carter and Viv in “A Little Thing Called Love”; they were two of the successful entrepreneurs on the block.
Carter was the well put together sexy friend that looked out for everyone, but always had a crush on Viv, but didn’t pursue her because she was unavailable. Viv was the smart, sexy, eccentric chocolate connoisseur that at first glance looked like a well put together package, and for the most part they were, if you don’t include matters of the heart.
Vivienne was plague with some daddy issues which blinded her from holding on to her heart, making her a target for heart break. Carter was so much more than what I expected, WOW!!! He was so well put together on the outside and so shattered on the inside. If you want to know why these two fit nicely as a couple and how a man so dark on the inside could give so much passion, get this one it will be worth it.
I enjoyed reading the story because it kept you engaged, not knowing what was going to happen. It was filled with surprises and everybody’s favorite in a love story….Passion!

I think its safe to say I'm obsessed with Christina C Jones and her books. I can always count on her to give me exactly what I'm looking for.

Black Love, Black Excellence, Character Development, Exposition, Fun, Pain, Conflict, Romance, Authenticity, Swag, Slayage, EVERYTHING.

I enjoyed reading about Vivienne and Carter, their struggles, insecurities, baggage, dysfunction and eventually love. I was completely engrossed in their story from beginning to end which is probably why it only took me a few hours to finish it. As always Christina presents her characters and stories in a way where you can't help but be invested in their lives. I loved seeing Vivienne and Carter struggle and overcome thier very different but parallel insecurities.

LOVED IT!

I thought this book, Didn't Mean To Love You, had a captivating storyline that was a smooth flowing continuation of the book, A Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Because I had prior knowledge of Vivienne & Carter, it was easy to connect to these characters. A great job was done in providing more information on Viv's & Carter's previous situations which assisted me in understanding what they were experiencing with each other. Carter, whom I envision as being extremely handsome, seemed to be one complicated fellow. Once I read his reasoning for his actions, it all made sense. Viv proved to be a great friend & lover to Carter despite his mixed signals behavior & was able to encourage him to show his true feelings. This was another great romance novel by Christina C. Jones that I highly recommend!

Carter and Viv's story intrigued me immediately, and I love how everything slowly unfolded between them. I also enjoyed how this story overlapped with the previous one in the series, keeping us abreast of what was going on with Simone and Roman.
I absolutely, absolutely adored Carter. Like, if-only-I-could-have-someone-like-him-for-myself kind of adored him. Ms. Jones has a knack for creating characters that are so raw and believable that you swear you know them. The rapport between Viv and Carter was effortless and I stayed glued to my Kindle while I was supposed to be working wanting to see how it finally played out.

Now please excuse me while I go purchase whatever of Ms. Jones's books I don't have yet. :)

Loved the characters (all of them!), loved Viv and Carter's journey, LOVED THIS BOOK!!! Such a good story, that had me laughing out loud several times, then almost in tears at other points. For a book that's less than 200 pages, the story felt very complete (not always the case) - even though I didn't want it to end, LOL. Nice to 'see' and hear about characters from her other books.

Keep up the good work, Mrs. Jones!

p.s. What's up with Eddie? He's a hoot, but I can't decide if I want him to end up with a love story of his own, or if he should go on being his free-spirited self. Such a character!!!

In book 2 we meet Vivian and Carter. Vivian, is the owner of the chocolate shop and Carter owns the barbershop. Vivian is one that loves hard. She wears her emotions on her shoulder. All she wants is to be loved back like she loves.

Carter, the man who doesn't want to be in a serious relationship is knocked off his square with Vivian. He really doesn't know how to express himself when it comes to relationships.

I enjoyed reading about their relationship. I enjoyed reading book 2. I will continue to read the series. I like how each book focuses on different business owners in the neighborhood.

I immediately started reading this book after o finished A Crazy Little Thing Called Love because it was so good and I couldn't wait to start the next book. This was a great read. Viv and Carter had both been burned by different situations and through this journey you see them grow together. Their up and downs keep the story intriguing. You also get to catch up with Simone and Roman as this relationship was occurring during their relationship. The love scenes in this book was HOT. You will not be disappointed with this book.
