This book is a slow-moving read with drama, crime, and mystery. It's low on suspense, low on intensity, and low on angst. The main characters are realistically flawed (apart from the criminals), but the pace of this story was sluggish at times and I struggled to finish reading it. There were some interesting parts throughout and I liked eliminating suspects in order to flush out the criminals, but this story wasn't one of those fast-paced, thrilling, unputdownable books.
One of the lead characters (Darren) is a lawyer, but any focus on that aspect of the law mentioned was superficial at best. Also, there was supposed to be a connection between Darren and Cameron, but it was a flimsy one at best and I wasn't convinced of their strong feelings toward each other. The intimacy scenes were drier than the Sahara desert, but the nursing jargon mentioned was believable.
Overall, this was an okay read for me and the author's personal remarks and acknowledgements at the end of the book was heartwarming.
Quite frankly, I wonder just how many serial killers are wandering around over there in America! Thankfully not too many when my husband and I were there two years ago and certainly not in Boston, a charming city which we thoroughly enjoyed and which is featured in this novel!
Cameron, a nurse, has managed to get over being unceremoniously dumped by her boyfriend three years previously and is finally finding her romantic feet again. She has the help of two flatmates - the unsociable Greg and the outgoing Karl. Now she is ready to move into a new apartment, and more than ready to start a new romance, which she does. However, fate has other things in store.
This a fast-paced plot which has more twists and turns than a cobra - but gory! It seems a serial killer who is devoted this craft is at work, and the final goal is, of course, Cameron.
I liked the character of Cameron, even though she does some really stupid things - as the heroine are wont to do in these situations - and over all I liked the book. I felt for the main male heroes - yes there are two, the detective and the Assistant District Attorney - but did pick the perpetrator about halfway through. This is did not impinge on my enjoyment of the whole.
I must say I do try to avoid books with serial killers in them now as the theme has been done to death with CSI and NCIS and all the usual suspects on TV, but this book was pretty good.
I recieved this book for free through Goodreads first reads. From the moment I got into this book, I was captured. This thrilling murder mystery had me reading every free minute I got.
Set in the busy city of Boston, Cameron Quinn will do anything to protect her brother Zach, who is being framed for murder. Even destroying evidence. Cameron meets ADA Darren Kennedy, he never looses a case. He's dead set on putting the psychotic seriel killer behind bars, no matter what it takes. But, the killer seems to be one step ahead. The murderer soon sets his sights on Cameron, and will not stop at anything to get what he wants. Soon its a race of figuring out why he has set his sights on Cameron and what he wants with her, before its too late.
There were twists at every corner, and the identy of the killer took me completly by surprise!
Fragmented is about family, what makes a family and what can destroy it. For some characters in this powerful romantic thriller, families are things that are lost and yearned for. For other characters families are dangerous, especially when a killer decides to target those who threaten a particular family.
Set in modern Boston, written in a crisp, fast-moving style with an engaging, selfless heroine and a hero who comes to understand and appreciate her, filled with hair-raising tension and twists and turns, 'Fragmented' is a read-at-a-sitting novel. I devoured it.
An excellent book. What makes it even better, won it on Good Reads. This was the first book I read by Colleen Connally and she has definitely made it to my favs list. "Fragmented" was a truly enjoyable book, kept me riveted to the story line, not wanting to put the book down until it was finished. Would definitely read more of Connally's books and recommend this to be read by all. Colleen Connally also inscribed and signed the book, making it even more special. Looking forward to more of Connally's future books.
This book was GREAT!!! I don't usually read crime thrillers, but I highly recommend you read this one. Connally's characters development happens fast, and you become invested in these characters. The story is horrifying, and will have you on the edge of a cliff the whole time. The twists and turns are terrifying. If you want an exciting read, pick up this book.
Disclaimer: I received this free, autographed copy from a Goodreads giveaway. My review, however, is my own opinion.
I enjoyed this book. Mystery/thrillers, especially those with a romantic element, are one of my favorite reading genres. The mystery in "Fragmented" was well-laid out. Clues were left at appropriate times and wrenches thrown into the plot where you would not expect them. Even though I guessed who the murder of young men was early on, I did not know until the last chapters why it was that person. The plot was good, the characters were well-developed and the romance and mystery were both believable.
As I said, I enjoyed reading the book. However, given that, it could use further editing, in my opinion. Too many parenthetical sentences and adverbs were used (you should describe the action in a way that adverbs are not needed). Some of the dialogue and description were stilted or phrased in a way that seemed clumsy/clunky.
Other than that, the book was good, and I will likely want to read the next in the series.
I thought the plot of this story was excellent from start to finish. The challenge that Cameron faces in ensuring history does not repeat itself with her brother, adds a psychological twist to the story.
Ultimately, this story is a triangle between Cameron Quinn, Darren Kennedy and the serial killer. Each tries to evade and outsmart the other so the story keeps you at the edge of your seat with all the suspense. The romance does add some fluff to the story, however, the reader is left wondering how much truth is actually in the story? When a person is sent to jail, is that really the end of the story? How many people have been wrongly accused? Scary thought.
I just started a historical romance by the same author, hard to believe both stories are written by the same author. Wish the next book in the series will be published soon.
Reviewer Disclosure - I received a free copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
The first murder caused concern among the public; the second alarm. Brophy, the cop who solves cases but who no one likes, knows the third murder will cause panic. These atrocities have to stop. This story includes a beautiful nurse called Cameron, whose brother Zach is always making trouble for her, especially with her roommate who has problems of his own. Mathew, her former fiancé decides he's made a horrible mistake in ditching her with a bunch of unpaid bills and marrying another. He wants her back. Cameron's best friend Meghan relies on her to continually save her from the sticky situations that she gets herself into. Then there's Darren Kennedy, a handsome ADA who works for the District Attorney's office and who's life shut down after the death of his wife, Sara - Brophy's sister. Until he meets Cameron! Then all hell breaks loose. A thrilling read that'll keep you on your toes.
This is a very good suspenseful book about a demented serial killer in Boston and a troubled but determined detective who hunts him down with plenty of suspense along the way.
Thus story has a lot of intrigue, twist and turns. Cameron has tried to be a great friend, sister and daughter. But little dies she know all the bad things going on around her until it affects her brother. Then all hell breaks loose.
Well developed characters and an interesting and unpredictable plotline. I didn't see the resolution coming at all and I like that! Since my family roots are in Boston, I loved the setting!!!
I loved how the author wrote this book. She describes everything where you feel the emotions of the characters. I loved the plot and her description of the serial killer. I am looking into reading more from this author.
I stumbled across Fragmented and so glad I did. It kept me guessing most of the way. I couldn’t put it down and ploughed through in 2 days. Really chuffed to have found Jerri Hines and looking forward to continuing the series
Way too transparent. I already knew the ending (And was mostly right!) near the beginning of the book. I didn't think it was very well written. Too stilted and vague at times.
He is getting over the death of his beloved wife.... She is trying to hold her fragmented family together... then when her brother is framed for murder, friction starts to mount. Great mystery!
I don’t know how I got this book or when, but it was in my Kindle waiting to be read. It is a new book by Colleen Connally, another author new to me.
We meet Darren Kennedy an ADA struggling to get over the death seven years ago of his lovely wife, Sara: Boston Detective Sergeant John Brophy, brother in law to Darren: A nurse working in the transplant unit at the hospital, Cameron Quinn, and her brother Zach, and her father, all of whom are still greatly affected by a tragic event some years ago.
We follow Darren and Cameron in their new relationship and then meet the two men with whom Cameron shares an apartment.
There are murders aplenty in this book, quite descriptive content of physical and psychological torture, and enough twists and turns to keep the hardest to please reader amongst us, glued to his/her seat.
There are many characters, all well defined and most are quite likeable. But the final twist certainly comes from left field. In all my sorting out what was happening, the final unveiling of the killer and his accomplice were totally unexpected.
I suggest you get hold of a copy of this book. It is really well worth reading and I couldn’t put it down until I reached the end.
