Deep Hex: The Deep Series, Book 6

Rate this book
A new home can bring new friends...new adventures...and new dangers.

Boone Fischer and Emily Durand have settled down in the Turks and Caicos—specifically, the picturesque island of Grand Turk. But a chance encounter with a dive boat from a nearby island leads them to pull up stakes again, if only temporarily. The couple take the Lunasea across to South Caicos—The Big South—an island with a rich history...not all of it virtuous.

An unidentified body discovered in an underwater cave system may have been the victim of a murder, but the manner of death is bizarre. Boone and Emily find themselves in the ensnared by events once more, but resolving this mystery may come at a steep price.

“Deep Hex”, the sixth book in “The Deep” series of audiobooks is both familiar and exciting while also feeling rather personal in a few ways. The author and narrator of the series, Nick Sullivan, has taken his listeners to many beautiful and exciting places in his previous stories encompassing the Caribbean, where the water is crystal clear, and the beaches are warm and sandy. The familiar part is that the author does not disappoint in that the audiobook is another exciting and action filled adventure where Boone and Emily stumble into some very tough situations while being a valuable part of the local dive community. In these Caribbean Island communities, everyone knows everyone else and wants to assist where they can. If you like stories that are more than just fun in the sun, I would recommend you pick this audiobook up and give it a try. The story telling and narration are wonderfully done.

The story was more personal for me because I have set foot on the islands of Turks and Caicos. Not only have I visited these islands, but I also care for a pair of rescue donkeys (not from the islands), and Mr. Sullivan includes equines as a part of this story as well. I have to say, we never ran into one in the wild while visiting. As with the other tales in The Deep series, our two main characters have been asked to assist in a diving engagement, this time in the far north of the Caribbean Islands chain, only to find themselves wrapped up in a high-level assassination attempt with some very bad and highly influential people. The story was fun, exciting, and even for it being the sixth in the series, it still held many surprises and mysteries that needed to be resolved. It is the kind of story that one could find themselves reading on the beach in some warm part of the world.

I would like to express my thanks to the author for keeping the main characters consistent across the series. It just seems so natural to slide right into a new environment and not have to get to know the main characters, it is like when old friends get together again after a period away. Both Boone and Emily are as cheeky as in the previous audiobooks but still caring and fun-loving. The banter, fun, and interactions just make the book feel more real and relatable. The new location is described in detail so one gets a good idea of the beauty of the islands, I would recommend a visit to people who have not been. The history and trivia the author uses helps readers to better know the surroundings and understand the local folks. Multiple localized dialects and interactions brings the characters to life as well. I will say that I do not recommend you skip the chapter containing the author’s notes at the end of the audiobook, as these have been some of my favorite chapters to listen to in each audiobook. Here the author gives us insight into what was from real experiences/people and what was made up to fit the story. In some cases, it was a blend of the two to resolve the problem at hand. Keep these going in each new audiobook.

The story quickly uncovers information on a possible drug ring when a local finds a few packages containing an illegal substance. Not only did I learn more about diving in this audiobook, but I also gleaned some insight into the drug trade. I have never heard the term square grouper used in referring to a lost bundle of such illegal substances. I’m sure it was not the authors intent, but educational none the less. The descriptive nature of the island, the people, and the food brought me back to when I had visited. I recall even being on the beach when the locals brought in fresh conch, and we were able to enjoy it right out of the shell. I found the ability of the author to tie-in previous events from the other audiobooks in the series, referring to past experiences or events, it helped me to recall the events that happened getting the character to where they are today.

Mr. Sullivan included some more modern references to news and events such as the Russian/Ukrainian war happening at the time of the audiobook’s publishing and this review. But there was a fair amount of focus on more local events or traditions that included things such as voodoo. Both aspects help to make the book feel bigger in scale, but also more a small community like the islands often are. I even had to laugh when Mr. Sullivan talked about the island glow worms. As a tourist, I went on a night cruise to observe these wonderful creatures and the mystery of their glowing. Talking about wonderful creatures, I will have to take up an argument with the author when he pokes a bit at cat people. Watch out as us cat people can finds ways of getting revenge, just like the animals themselves.

Speaking of the audiobook’s narration, I have to say that Mr. Sullivan has this down perfectly. From the many different accents including local island folk, to British, and even Russian, each of these just flowed smoothly. Even the female voiced characters were done exceptionally well when it comes to narration. There were no noticeable audio artifacts such as pops, background noise, or swallows. A sign of a true professional. I had nothing negative to say about the narration itself, only to keep the newer audiobooks in the series coming.

For parents and younger audiences, I would say that this audiobook should be geared towards older teenagers to adults. I did not note any vulgar language, but the audiobook does contain some aspects of both drugs, the occult and graphic violence. Due to these, I would say the audiobook is intended for mature audiences or listeners that do not have an issue with any of these items above.

In summary, the story and narration are solid. In some ways I can say that it felt like a The Deep series audiobook as after six total thus far, but that is a good thing. There were enough twists and turns that kept me guessing and again, placing the story in a new location always makes me wonder how it will be different from the others. I would have expected a bit more diving in the story, but in this one, that seemed to take a side seat from how the others focused on it. Again, not a bad thing, just different. I would recommend you give these audiobooks a listen as it is just good entertainment in a beautiful setting.

Back with a Bang!

Boone and Emily are set for their next adventure in the Turks and Caicos Islands. There are interesting new characters, local island color (land and sea), an evil villain with a nasty plan and a fiery climax. But the best part of these stories is the relationship between Boone and Emily. Laid back, laconic Boone and the effervescent, wide open Emily seem an on odd couple until you hear the sharp dialog crackle between them and the way they work together as true partners. Another great tropical tale!

Loved It!

Another crazy adventure for Boone and Emily! Good thing they are like cats and have 9 lives. Love reading about the islands too. Can picture those sunrises in my mind, and of course with dogs and puppies, what's not to love?!

I absolutely love this series! I'm always in the mood for an awesome Caribbean adventure with Boone and Emily! (and occasionally their other friends from other series by other authors) This time their story takes place in the Turks and Caicos. What I love most about this series is the history and cultures I learn about while enjoying a good story. As I write this review, I'm enjoying a Ting! If you've followed this series or like Jamaican food, you'll know what it is! Thanks Nick Sullivan for another great book and another great narration! Looking forward to the next story!

Another good book by Sullivan

The story is a great travelogue you learn a lot about the islands both current and historical. The action is a little slow in coming but it gets there eventually! The interaction between Boone and Emily was a little lacking too. Sullivan needs to get Emily naked and have Boone lovingly describe her! Just read a Stennett Jesse McDermott story where both Charity and Cheryl get naked and give Jesse a hard time! But all in all it was a good read won’t disappoint Sullivan fans.

Riveting With Lots of Action!

Loved learning more about this very interesting and special place in the TCI.
It’s like the Bahamamian Out Islands many years ago. We have been there before and it is very beautiful and unspoiled. Nick does a great job of weaving a wonderful tale into this dive mecca.

Deep Rez rocks

Boone and Emily continue to keep me up extra hours with their adventures. The book is excellent and draws the reader in. I found my iPhone kindle on the floor where it fell from my hands as I fell asleep trying to read one more chapter. It’s a great story. You’ll stay awake at night too.

I love books about scuba diving and particularly enjoy any book that is Caribbean based. Boone and Emily are a perfectly matched couple and their interplay is always fun. Although, I am at a loss at times to some of the British colloquialisms used by Emily. Sorry to say goodbye to the Lunasea, but looking forward to what comes next.

Absolutely fantastic read. There is nothing like Boonemily adventures. Twist and turns and great factual history lessons. Can't say enough how I look forward to their new adventure. And maybe... a nice Newton.

lots of filler

Too formulaic. The female main character is a bit of a caricature that really gets annoying. The plot — such as it is — is thin and highly predictable. You can literally skip pages of descriptive stuff without losing the thread. Don’t waste your money on this.

Gosh do I love Nick Sullivan and the Deep series. I’m sure that most of his readers would love to go to the places that he describes. I know that I would! This sixth book is an easy read, with Boone and Emily fighting against another evil force. Read it all at the pool and beach. Fun stuff!

Another fun read

Great dialogue, very likable main characters and the expected escape from impossible predicaments, aided by strangers moved by the kindness and humanity of the characters. All combine for a fun, enjoyable bit of escapism. Loved it.

This entire series has been fantastic. I love Boonemily. I listened to the first one on a library audiobook. I loved it so much I looked for the rest online. I read the rest on ebooks from Kindle Unlimited. Now that I've finished I intend to go buy some physical copies for my bookshelf. I enjoyed them so much I want to keep them available in case they get removed from the Amazon catalog.
