I'd Rather Be Growing Grapes

Rate this book
Sabrina Kerrigan is no longer interested in love thanks to being jilted by her fiancé a week before their wedding. She'd rather spend her free time growing flowers and caring for a spindly grape arbor. Her meddling sister isn't about to let Sabrina hide from love and registers her to be a contestant in an event called Pick Me, where she and other bachelorettes will vie for one man's heart. The only reason Sabrina agrees to take part is because it's for charity. She plans to lay low and not actually try to win the bachelor's attention.

Millionaire winery owner and philanthropist Beau Reinholt, whose true identity is to remain secret during the competition, agreed to be this year's bachelor as a favor to his friend who organized the fundraiser. He has no real intention of finding love or even extreme-like with any of the contestants.

Sabrina ticks off Beau right away and it becomes game-on between them. She wants no part of him and he wants no part of her until he reads her answer to the question -- What one thing would you like the bachelor to privately know about you?

There’s Nothing Quite Like a Good Wine

Sabrina, jilted once too often, doesn’t believe in romance. Yet, Sabrina has a sister who believes that her life could be better if she found love.

Beau doesn’t either because of similar hurts, but his friend thinks he needs to find the one and only love of his life.

Sabrina’s sister enters her into ‘Pick Me’ a bachelor seeks love game while Beau’s friend convinces him to be the bachelor.

That, in short, is the recipe for televised mayhem, for twenty-plus-one women to vie for Beau’s favour. Reluctant Sabrina hopes to get back home quickly, but fate plays her another hand.

Jan Romes knows how to stir up a plot with bittersweet and hilarious events. Her imagination and the interaction between the characters deliver a rom-com of proportions. This is the ideal book to while away a few hours on a beach or sitting on a terrace with a glass of high-quality wine.

Awesome

This book had me laughing so hard at the insane way most of the contenders acted rather brash words, brash manners in talking about their sexualities, not wanting a factory worked for a husband, eating two pieces of lettuce with a tiny dab of salad dressing, to water fights, food fights, the cattiness, and more. Between those events and many others, true love developed. I love happily ever after.

I've waited a long time for a new Jan Romes story, but it was worth it! I'd Rather Be Growing Grapes had me laughing from the first chapter. That's one thing I love about Jan's books, they make you laugh and the feel good meter of her books is always off the charts. While the romance begins to heat up immediately between Beau and Sabrina, they have 20 other women to contend with for their annual Pick Me contest for charity. The women each pay three thousand dollars for a chance to via for the bachelor over a three week period. Each week more contestants are sent home until there are only two left, and thank God for that! Some of these women were real pieces of work! Ms. Romes showed her ability to write likable and very unlikable women on the same page. There were so catty you loved them, but weren't sad to see them disappear from the picture to make room for Beau and Sabrina's blooming romance. The book progresses quickly, I read it in about four hours, but it was a fun, sometimes hateful, always lovingly crafted romance story that left you saying awwwww by the end. I was especially pleased with some of the small lessons imparted by Beau about wine, growing grapes and tasting wine. It was like a mini-insight into a wine tasting without having been to one. If you're looking for a book filled with drama queens where only one will marry the king then you'll love I'd Rather Be Growing Grapes!

I really enjoyed this light-hearted romance.

When Sabrina arrives at the hotel for Pick Me it isn't long before her defences are on the alert against Beau, the handsome bachelor everyone wants to marry. Everyone except Sabrina, that is. Meantime, Beau goes along with the programme because his best mate, Marco, is behind it to raise money for charity. We want to know whether Beau will stick it out for the whole three weeks, and whether Sabrina will go home the first day.

I particularly liked the way all the different characters were drawn. Neither Beau nor Sabrina wanted to be in the programme in the first place, which made us sympathise with them. Sabrina's twin sister pushed her into it; Marco, Beau's friend, persuaded him. The other women vying for Beau's attention had various reasons for being there, but they also had very different personalities. Some we were pleased to see the back of. Some were downright nasty. But I particularly liked Marco! He was funny and persuasive as the brains behind Pick Me, the one struggling to keep it together and not lose the plot. In fact I would like to read a story with Marco as the chief protagonist. As for Beau and Sabrina, well, I was cheering by the time we came to the end.

I'd Rather Be Growing Grapes was a light read, entertaining and enjoyable. As with all Jan Romes' books, I would heartily recommend it.

Sabrina Kerrigan’s twin sister, Lilith, decides to take it upon herself to find her a mate. So she signs her up for a local fundraiser based on The Bachelor called Pick Me. Sassy Sabrina wants nothing to do with it, but when she finds out how much money her sister paid for the event, she agrees. Her hope is to hide in the background and be one of the first women to leave.

Enter bachelor Beau Reinholt. Sexy, handsome, and oh, so delicious. Even when Sabrina fights with him, she can’t help but find herself falling for him. But Beau, who was also conned into doing this gig, only wants to get through the three weeks and get out of there. He doesn’t believe he’ll find his soul mate among the twenty-one women who paid to be there. But as the days go by, he begins to find his thoughts are constantly on Sabrina. Can he really find true love amidst all the chaos?

I’d Rather Be Growing Grapes is packed with wit, humor, and charm. Jan puts together a wonderful cast of characters that fills this story with all kinds of crazy scenarios so you don’t want to put the book down. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and I’m sure anyone who loves a good romantic comedy will love it too. Thank you, Jan, for another entertaining novel! Can’t wait for the next one.

I'd Rather Be Growing Grapes by Jan Romes
Anytime I want to laugh, feel good inside, I read one of Jan's books. Her Characters have sass, humor and love, especially in this book. So many women in one place fighting for a studs hand in marriage. Just like The Bachelor, the tv series, set in a small Ohio town, twenty ladies are vying for Beau Reinhart's heart. Sabrina Kerrigan's sister Lilith signed her up for the contest without her knowledge. Lilith thought Sabrina needed a little help finding the right man after what she just went through. Sabrina doesn't want to do it, but the reason the contest is being held draws her in. Can you imagine what's going to happen with twenty women fighting for Beau's attention. Sabrina is a kitchen worker at a school cafeteria, can she compete with these other women? Sabrina thinks any man who is willing to do this has to be a someone she doesn't want to know. Will Beau Reinhart fall under this category? You'll have to this awesome, fun book to find out. As with all this author's books, it's well written with strong characters. I totally recommend this book to anyone wanting a feel good read.

Should Sabrina and Beau attend to their sentiments even with all the commotion closing in on them as well as dealing with their wounded hearts? Sabrina says she doesn’t want anything to do with Beau, a tycoon, vineyard proprietor, and the year’s eligible bachelor on a show called “Pick Me”. Well-to-do Beau, has his choice of any contestant—eligible beautiful women—challenging for his heart, however the more Sabrina rejects him the more he is drawn to her. While she annoys him, she attracts him at the same time. Sabrina never wanted to be a contender on ‘Pick Me’ but her meddlesome, twin sister thought it would do her good to get over her heartbreak of her past, spoiled relationship. Want to find out what’s going to transpire between high-spirited Sabrina and the very wealthy Beau? Then make sure you pick up “I'd Rather Be Growing Grapes”; one of the many delightful, romantic comedies by the very talented author Jan Romes. At times you’ll be shaking your head and others, smiling and laughing at this fun, entertaining read.

It Flowed!

Had no problem following the story. I would not watch this set up on tv, but it was interesting to read (see) how people can be in certain situations.

I was allured by the name of this book and had no idea what it is about. ‘I’d Rather Be Growing Grapes’ has a weird plot but it has been handled in a brilliant manner, with the right kind of emotions. A fun read, without a dull moment, it keeps you enthralled till the last page. When you place twenty-one young women around a bachelor, there are inevitable chances of fireworks and cat-fights! Will Beau Reinholt find his soul mate?

In her light-hearted style of writing, Jan Romes introduces you to the “she devils” who had signed up for the three-week event called “Pick Me,” each one vying to win the most eligible bachelor, picking at each other, competing to seek attention; their bickering and brawls are hilarious. Egos are hurt, curses are thrown at Beau for not choosing the one who is most eager; Roxanne calls “Pick Me” the stupidest thing ever, organized for money, not love. Tina leaves with a positive comment while Tamara makes sarcastic remarks.

Some sterling expressions that won my heart: “They came at her from all sides, ready to rip into her flesh until they hit bone.”
“Spirals of ecstasy swirled through her and blasts of warmth detonated below her belly.”
“A bunch of hens trying to peck each other’s eyes out.”

Despite the efforts of some of the girls daring to reveal all, Romes keeps the narrative decent and therefore I would like to give her an extra star for that. A well-crafted, charming story, this book flows well and I enjoyed reading it.

Fun light formula

I enjoyed the content. The premise was cute. Somewhere at about 80% complete it seemed like the editorial staff fell asleep and I found lots of typos and incomplete wording. Too bad.
