Genre identification is kind of important. It signals to the reader genre characteristics so we know what to expect.
❤️ In a romance, we see love interests work through a romantic (or erotic) connection, and they have a guaranteed HEA. The HEA comes no matter how dark the story or characters are. We see their evolution and character growth come from their romantic love leading to the HEA.
🏃🏾♀️A thriller is about the twists and turns, keeping you on the edge about the mystery or crime, and the characters growth comes from the resolution of those twists and turns. A thriller can be romantic and how romantic moments....so why this long dissertation about genres? Because even though I enjoyed this story, it's not really a dark romance, more so it's a romantic thriller. I'm tagging what I enjoyed while explaining how it matters.
#dark romance so this story does have rape, non con, sexual coercion between the main characters, and Lio's primary motivation is his love for Piper, but the story isn't balanced between their character growth. Yes, Lio kidnaps Piper in Chapters 2-3. Yes, Lio will set these rules and conditions of her imprisonment. Yes, Lio gets rid of her birth control. Yes, Lio wants to be sexual and have intimate relations with Piper, and he will force these moments if he has to, but.....Lio isn't really a flushed out character.
🫶🏿#OTTobssessedMMC. Lio feels like a background in his own romance. We never get his pov, and he doesn't grow through the romance. He takes care of Piper. He is obsessed with Piper, but he doesn't change and evolve through their love. Instead, the twists and turns that we learn throughout the story uncovers his true motivations, but his actions don't change. Just our perspective given the full story that everyone has but the FMC. Each layer in the story is added to the lore and twists. Unfortunately, we don't see actual love build. Lio is a great character in a women's lit fiction story, but the romance wasn't there. Raping her, he doesn't even try to make it feel good or come across as romantic. He just takes his anger out. There isn't aftercare where he demontrates how deep his actual feelings go. It's just control. There is zero wooing outside of forcing the FMC to confront deep psychological issues she didn't realize she had.
#eroticism They barely kiss the first 51% of the story. When they do share a forced kiss, it's briefly described. Intimacy is used as a finely sharpened weapon. The scenes aren't about the rough pummeling sex. We are still getting tentative kisses, and I can't trust him actions through 60-70% of the story. The "love" isn't unleashed until around 80%. The noncon SA happens around the 60ish% mark, but before that, it's hardly any touches. Once again, the eroticism used as a twist in a thriller was great it kept me invested and engrossed. It just wasn't a romance in the general sense.
🫶🏿#damselindistress Piper isn't a bad character. It's told all from her POV, and it pulls you at the end. How did she end up with friends she hated? How did she not realize a man was obsessed with her (her brother's laid-back best friend)? Does she have a disordered eating pattern? All intriguing questions and the story are layered with flashbacks to the most pivotal time in our lives. 18 years old and high school seniors. We see the vulnerability of youth and the closed off shutdown demeanor of a 28 year old woman. It's interesting hook and we travel that road with her. As the star of the show, we see how this is really a women's lit story. It's about watching Piper rise from the pain. Watching her become reborn in her captivity. Seeing how the twists and turns impact her and forces her to change (not Lio's love but the mystery of it all).
🫶🏿#artworld Art is intrinsic to the story, and it's described well here. It enhances what's going on and gives the story heart. It's not pedantic or derivative. No, the descriptions are done by a living breathing artist, and it elevates the entire narrative. I love the art groups. Each character fits in. The clothing designer/model. The photographer. The sculptor. The crime trends have their own groups as well: The Cons. The thieves. The Assassins. The Money Launders. All groups are important to character motivations. The art thief is also a sculptor. In his world, you take what you want. Chapter titles are the gift that keeps on giving. This book was just beautiful from beginning to end.
The mysteries do get solved in this book, but some twists that pop up at the end will be explored with two different characters. Im all in with reading Book 2. I want to go down the dark, twisty, romantic thriller path. I'm ok with the author saying this is a dark romance if only because I never would have read it otherwise. It was a nice treat.
