The first Hollywood After Dark book

All Night Inn By Janet Miller

Sharon Colson is desperate. Stranded in the California coastal town of Los Niños de la Noche, she's broke, locked out of her rooming house, and needs a job. Jonathan Knottmann, the local vampire, is the only one in town hiring but he won't take her on as a bartender without her becoming his vampire companion. With no other options, Sharon accepts the mark of his fangs on her neck and thus enters the parafolk world of the All Night Inn.

Over the course of the next few weeks Sharon learns many lessons from Jonathan—what brand of dog food shapeshifters like to nibble on with their beer, the kinds of drinks spellcasters favor, and that he'd rather be known as a nightwalker than the politically incorrect term of vampire. As the parafolk celebrate the full moon with howls and dancing, she even learns to love him the way he loves her.

But the biggest lesson is one Jonathan and Sharon must both learn—that love cannot thrive unless it is based on trust, in yourself and your partner.

During the weekday Janet is a mild-mannered software engineer who writes code and design documents. At night and on weekends she turns to the creation of offbeat stories about imaginary pasts, presents, and futures. But no matter when or where the story happens, there will always be some adventure, some humor, and meaning to the tale. For Cerridwen she's writing a new line of parafolk tales about modern day vampires, called nightwalkers, along with psychics and shapeshifters of all kinds.

Also publishes as Cricket Starr.

Book 1 of the Hollywood After Dark [multi-author:] series. The hero is a vamp - but not one who drips threat or testosterone. The heroine is a down-on-her-luck singer who is asking for a job as a bartender. Since the bar that he owns serves paranormals as well as humans, he refuses to give her the job without 'marking' her. They both have intimacy and control issues, vampire politics intrudes, love ensues... Nice read-once.

I must be on a Beta Hero kick. I really liked this book. It is a different Vampire (they prefer NightWalker) romance than I am used to. Usually, the Vampire is pretty tough. Definately Alpha-sometimes even Gamma, but I was very pleasantly surprised how laid back the hero, Jonathan was. Not saying he isn't protective of Sharon, but he is a lover more than a fighter in my opinion. That was refreshing to me.

Sharon has fallen on some hard times. Being stranded in a small town and having no where to stay, or money to fix her car, she applies for a job at the All Night Inn as a bartender. When the owner Jonathan reveals that he is a Nightwalker and a different mix of paranormals are regulars at the bar, she surprisingly isn't too fazed by it. But, when he tells her he must mark her by making her his companion, she hesitates...but being desperate, and for some reason feels safe with the Nightwalker allows him to do so.

I won't get too much into it, but this story had some funny moments as well as some emotional moments too. I felt bad for some of Jonathan's plight. I thought Sharon was too stubborn at times, but all in all I thought they were well matched. They had some trust issues to work though...BOY DID THEY...WHEW! But, I was very satisfied with the book and the ending.

Thanks for recommending this one Julie:)

Unique world full of vampires, shape shifters and spell casters. Vampires have companions that can supply them with blood more often than humans, but require a mental link between the two. Since Jonathon and Sharon both have serious issues with linking and trust, there doesn't seem to be a way for them to stay together. When vampires and companions start dying, Jonathon has to make a choice about staying in his comfortable world or taking the responsibility his age requires.

I really enjoyed this book! I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could. Jonathan was an interesting character. He was a "nightwalker", the PC term for his kind, who really had a soul. And he was unsure of himself in many ways, even after over 300 years. I usually don't care much for romances, even with vampires, but this one was definitely an exception to my rule. I would definitely recommend this one!
