Noted Austrian-British psychoanalyst Anna Freud applied to child therapy.

Anna Freud, the sixth and last of Sigmund Freud and Martha Freud, followed the path of her father and contributed to the new field. Compared to her father, Freud's work emphasized the importance of the ego, and its ability to be trained socially.

Although Freud bases herself on the analytic axiom that there is no gap between health and illness, it's easy to see that there's too much emphasis here on the supposedly "normal," the ostensibly "rational" ego. But isn't it equally naive to believe that norms can be dissected until they all crumble into dust? Even if Freud's developmental lines are presented too uncritically, surely young humans have to develop into something, and the question is what. Freud's view that this complex, overdetermined process can be aided by non-authoritarian intervention is worth considering.
