Nature Boy

Rate this book
Escaping a family vacation in a little town east of Yosemite, Skye Pelter sings "Nature Boy" in a karaoke bar and triggers the adventure of a lifetime. Given an open calendar, a stealth '86 Toyota pickup truck and cold, hard cash, the only limits are his imagination and the Interstate Highway System. A wild, free-wheeling novel from the author of The Popcorn Girl and Operaville. "A stylistic cross between Tom Robbins, Kerouac, and Wes Anderson at their finest. Vaughn writes with a wit, tenderness, cerebral intensity and outright raunchy humor which fast becomes addictive." --CSLowe

A funny, quirky and serious tale

I wasn’t sure what the plot was, but I kept reading because the characters were good, the dialogue was real and the situations kept me guessing. I especially enjoyed the travelogue of all the places visited by the hero crossing the country, made me want to get out, travel and be as immersed in the beauty as the character was. What made this a five star review is the depth of thought and ideas in the book that made me want to think. Go figure. By the end, I think I figured out the plot, but I am probably wrong because I am sure that I’m right. Kind of like the stock market. Yes, read this book. Now that I’ve discovered Vaughn, I am starting another book of his. Enjoy.

My feelings were this was a combination of Kerouac and Letters to Penthouse. A road trip, alcohol and sex, a young man who never matured. A man with ridiculous daydreams...yet it's written as if it all happened. Some parts seem more like fantasy/science fiction. I did like the last few chapters on artists and artwork, but I can't say more without spoilers.

Awesome read!

Wasn't too sure when I started this but it hooked me pretty quick. Story is chaotic at times and sometimes fragmented but it all comes together with a surprise ending and at times can bring you almost to tears. I really enjoyed this book.

Sometimes I felt like, "Ga! What next!" But I was compelled to find out. Not a fan of dreams in books, though.
