Toby Miller just hung up the phone with his wife, Anna 20 minutes ago. When it rings again, the voice calling from his wife’s phone isn’t Anna. “Mister Miller, your wife’s been in an accident.”
Toby makes a promise to honor Anna’s last wish that he carries out their dream of living in the mountains of Tennessee, follow his own goals and, as paranormal enthusiasts, to “keep chasing ghosts.”
When he settles into his “Forever House,” the house is anything but settled. Instead of chasing ghosts on investigations, he’s the one being chased. Does the house hold a dark secret? What happened to the entity in the house? And is Toby getting the whole story?
What really happened that terrible night?
Toby is thrust into an emotional roller coaster, and you’re sitting in the same seat. Will Toby learn how to live again without Anna?
The Ghost Between Us is a thrilling story of love, loss and hope with a perfect dose of paranormal suspense.

This book sucked me in from the very beginning to the end. I cannot wait to read it again!! The characters are so real. I felt like I knew them. The setting, the emotions are very descriptive. At one point I screamed out loud and my dogs went crazy wondering what happened. I highly recommend this book. I like romance and I like paranormal. What a unique way to combine the two genres. I really hope there is more to come!!
I am a Paranormal Investigator and founder of B-town Paranormal I found this book and couldn't put it down! Every page, every line grasped me and i couldn't put it down. The characters and their feelings was so real and raw I felt as if I knew the characters and felt their feelings. It had amazing twist and unexpected moments that kept me on edge. The paranormal references and activity was spot on to what a haunting would be expected. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves paranormal and romance and twist! Cant wait for a part 2
This local author dropped off this book along with the other two in the trilogy to my manager and me. He is a local author and is interested in us hosting a book signing for him. Both of us were intrigued by the premise and were hooked in the first two pages. We have both been reading it. I am a fast reader, so I finished it first. LOL.
I really loved this book and am anxious to read the other two in the series. I have to say the first part of the book is written masterfully and is so beautiful in its tragic pain of heart-rending loss. Tears streamed down my face at one point, the character's pain was so palpable. The characters are so well written and believable. I felt like I was getting to know them and felt invested in them throughout the book.
I wish the tone of the first third of the book carried through because this author is incredibly gifted. I was somewhat disappointed that it didn't go the direction I thought it was going, but by the end that disappointment was crushed. It kept me guessing. I kept thinking I knew what would happen next like a cleverly written whodunnit, but was still caught off guard and chilled to the bone.
There were a fair number of typos which always drive me crazy, but the story is so engaging, the author drags you along even with the bumps of grammatical and spelling errors. And heck, I know this review probably has quite a few typos! LOL.
I would say this author is a dark horse. He can tell a good story that is captivating and keeps you entranced. The reader becomes an emotional putty in his hands, helpless as he carries you through the tale. The only thing I think could have been done better is with the transitions. The main character goes through three different "stages". These were the only times I noticed any jerkiness to the smoothness of the prose.
I highly recommend this book. It is a slow burn paranormal thriller with romance tossed in to round out the story line. It is great!
I was absolutely hooked on this story from start to finish and I have honestly never been so moved by a book as I was when reading the first few chapters. This story is thoroughly enjoyable and I already cannot wait for the next book!
I went into this book not actually realizing what is was about and that it was a paranormal romance. I saw that it was about ghosts and set in the Smoky Mountains and so I read it! To me the book had three different sections. The first to me was the loss of his wife. It covers the entire first half of the book. You live through the accident with the main character and I feel like it was the best writing in the entire book. It was incredibly vivid as far as making the reader feel like you were right there in real time watching it happen. For a book to make me emotional in just the first bit is a huge feet and this author accomplished it. I honestly thought the loss was so well written it could have left out the paranormal part all together and just focused on how to move forward with this loss and how it effects new relationships. The sudden mention of dowsing rods and crystals honestly almost seemed out of place to me when it came up at first because there had been no mention of the paranormal until this point and it kind of took me back out of it a little. The second part to me is the transition between Toby leaving his old life behind and starting fresh in the Smokies. It did drag a little for me and it took a little too long, just in my opinion, to get to the crux of the story. In my opinion, the relationship between Toby and Alex was totally awkward for me because his wife had only died 6 weeks ago! I could see if maybe a year or even 6 months had passed, but 6 weeks?! To me, this seemed way too soon and it almost made me feel like their relationship was "against the rules". Everyone grieves differently and I guess that is what makes it ok for the story, but me personally, I could never imagine moving on that fast and so it made their relationship just not sit right with me. This middle section is why I almost gave this book a 3 star instead of a 4 because really not that much happens. However, the last section of the book is what I had been wanting the WHOLE TIME. It was creepy and scary which is what I expect in a paranormal novel. Up until this point it seemed like an adult version of Casper. Not much happened to creep out the living so to speak. But, I thought the ending very much made up for it. It was a little predictable, but not boring to read.
The biggest thing that bothered me was the hint that Alex and Anna may have spoken before or known each other. His ex has Alex's card in her belongings, but it is never really addressed again! Perhaps in the next book??
Overall, I think this is a good easy read. It only took me two days and it was for the most part quite enjoyable. It is a slow build up similar perhaps to Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House. Lot's of dialogue and inner contemplation. If you like the paranormal and believe in fate, I definitely recommend you give this one a read!!
from the beginning with each page you will find yourself being drawn into The Ghost Between Us. The emotions of the characters in incredibility real and with each page ,the more you read the more you get a feeling of the characters, their emotions, the twist and turns come through with each page and chapter !
I got this book after listening to the author on the podcast Darkness Radio. I was intrigued enough to amazon it. I didn't have much time to set and read so I listened to it on audible. It was good story that really captivated my imagination. I felt that it was very unique and had great twists and turns. Was it a little over the top? Well yes and it could have came off a little cleaner and more subdued for me but it was very interesting. One of the things the author brought up in the podcast was his own personal paranormal experiences that led to the book. He thought it would allow him more creative expression to make it a fictional read. I agree and I think it was a great job. Honestly I think I would have liked it even more if I had read it instead of listening to it on audible. The narrator did good but the female parts were just a little weird as he imitated a southern female accent. Didn't care for that at all and was a bit annoying. It was so nice to hear a well told story that really kept me guessing. I think this fella did a super job. I look forward to the next two books in the trilogy and will read those especially if they have the same narrator on audible.
Summary Toby and Anna Miller's fairytale marriage ended tragically when a car crash took Anna's life, leaving Toby alone. A generous insurance settlement—and an attractive real estate agent—helped him rebuild a new life in the beautiful mountains of Tennessee. But Toby senses that he isn't alone in his new dream house. An amateur ghost hunter, he uses dowsing rods, a spirit box and a crystal pendulum to communicate with the ethereal roommate. As the story unfolds, it appears that Toby also has some sort of parapsychological gift where he can see and talk to departed souls. He also finds new love with Alex, the real estate agent.
Critique The plot was hard for me, as a cancer patient, to read because Toby moved on to a new love interest two months after the death of his wife. However, I did find the book captivating and enjoyable overall.
On page 34, as Anna lies dying in her hospital bed, Toby says to himself, "The only thing in life I'm afraid of is being alone." He then goes on to have an telepathic conversation with her where she instructs him to, "keep living your life" and "please don't look for me."
The first part of the book—where he's talking about Anna and her accident—is tear-jerking and written with a lot of passion and detail. The pace moves quickly and the reader is drawn into the story, developing a devotion to the Anna character.
Then comes the part after her death when Toby moves to Tennessee. These chapters discuss the more mundane aspects of finding and buying a home, and establishing a new life. This section, which is peppered with the spark of romance between Toby and Alex, are written with less passion. The purchase of the house wasn't realistic; Toby just wrote a check to Alex. There was no title office involved. No utilities set up in his name.
The love scenes between Anna and Toby just seemed too soon after Anna's death. He even has some romantic tension with the ghost. Even though the dead wife had told him not to follow her, he still needed to mourn. It made me wonder if ever truly loved Anna—or could truly love Alex—or if he just feared being alone, and any attractive woman could fill that space.
Paranormal enthusiasts will enjoy the level of detail Nunweiler goes into when describing Toby's first attempts to use the investigation tools. On page 104, when Toby is using the dowsing rods for the first time, the ghost fumbles with them, "like a small child struggling to put a block in its place."
Readers can learn a lot about authors' personal lives from how the writers describe their scenes. For example, every time Toby goes to make a drink, there's no description of what kind of drink it is. It's alcohol of some sort, but the reader doesn't know if it's bourbon, vodka, gin, tequila, scotch, beer, or wine. And is he drinking it neat, mixed, on the rocks? I got the impression that Nunweiler is not much of a drinker. That was not a criticism, just an observation.
The Toby character, as part of his new life, turns his photography hobby into a career. In addition to writing, Nunweiler owns Nunweiler Photography. His shutterbug experience is evident throughout the book, especially on page 159 where Toby "inspected photo after photo to ensure I captured exactly the right setting, colors, saturation, depth of field, vibrancy and cleanliness after editing."
It's also evident that he knows about firearms (his author bio says that he's an Army veteran). On page 219, one of the characters says, "I never looked back until I heard the hammer clicks behind my head." I don't think the average writer, who doesn't know much about guns, would think of that detail. That was good.
Conclusion The Ghost Between Us is a highly enjoyable read for paranormal enthusiasts.
I was gifted this by one of my coworkers when he visited Gatlinburg and I was so excited to read a book from a local author (I’m from Chatt but currently live in Nash). It was a great mix of paranormal and romance, with a steady pacing that kept me intrigued. It did feel somewhat rushed towards the end though which was disappointing because it felt like we’d had such good pacing in the first 75% of the story. I really wanted us to dig into the paranormal aspect in more detail and with more buildup since it was bone-chilling, but it kinda felt like the stages of the haunting and possession were dramatically sped up, discrediting some of the terror I felt. It was still fantastic and the moments of the wife’s death in the beginning had me teary, so I’ll definitely be buying the second book soon!
Random question: What’s with all the 4-letter names? Something about all of these small names kept getting me confused. Toby, Anna, Alex, Sara, Rick, lol. Also, did we ever find out why his wife has contacted Alex previously?
First off, I met the author at a book signing which is the reason I bought it and my interest in ghost, of course. Pete is a very nice guy and I'm glad I came across him because I wouldn't have found out about this book. I'm not going to say too much because I don't want to give to much away but I loved this book, it sucked me right in from page one. The first part of this book made me cry, it was so heartbreaking. I could feel it all. The second half gave me an uneasy feeling. Which is good, it means this man accomplished everything. This book made me feel so many emotions; from sadness, to happiness, uneasiness, you name it, it was most likely felt. It goes from breaking your heart, to fixing it all in one.
I don’t even know where to begin with this book. Let me first start off by saying that I’m not necessarily interested in ghost like books but I already read the John Wolfe series by this brilliant author, so I gave The Ghost Between Us a try and I’m not surprised that I absolutely loved it. This book kept me interested from start to finish. There was twists I didn’t expect, a beautiful love story after the tragic death of Toby’s wife, interactions with ghosts and their stories, & so much more. This story was beautifully put together and had me questioning “what’s next?” Every chapter. If you’re looking for a new book to read, you will not be disappointed if you pick this one up, I know I wasn’t!
I read this book in less than 48 hours because I couldn't put it down. It is incredibly descriptive and it's very easy to place yourself in the scene. I love raw emotion, mystery, the paranormal and suspense, this book has it all. Read it...it won't disappoint. It definitely leaves you wanting more which is what a good book is supposed to accomplish.
This was a quick and easy read. I guess the author did his job well because I felt a broad range of emotions while reading this book. I loved the character development and the twists and surprises. This was my first book from this author but it won’t be my last! Well done!
You wrote my new favorite series and you were right. Exquisitely written. Once you start reading you will have a hard time putting it down. Which I like. A paranormal romance unique to any I have read before. When Toby's wife sadly dies from a car crash. He moves to their dream mountain home which winds up haunted and with a chance at a new relationship. A keeper.
I was reading this book during my work break and people thought I had loss someone , tears coming down my face … I laughed out loud , giggled and feared for my life … it feels as if a friend is telling you the story . It kept me guessing . Masterpiece ! The day I finished , the day I ordered the second copy from this website! This book Draws you in and does not let’s go ! Great read
Some books make me cry at the end of the stories, but this one made me sob at the beginning. The first few chapters were tense and sad. And the climax was exciting. However, the middle part was a bit boring. I expected that it would be more thrilling, but it was more like ordinary romance.
I have heard so many great and thrilling reviews on this book and can not wait to get a copy so I can read it. I am sure it is fantastic. When I do read it I will write a review. 🙌
The characters became real. I felt like I was right there with them. Range of Emotions, happy, Sad, chills on my arms. He really keeps the reader waiting more. I read this book in a day.
I admire anyone who can finish a book and get it published (even self-published). That said, there is a reason this book was self-published. I read this book because it was chosen by my book club after we met the author at a signing. There was the grain of a good story here but both the plot and the writing were problematic. Had Nunweiler had a good, experienced editor I think this would have been a much different, much better, book.
I loved this book, the entire trilogy was great! From the very first paragraph I was hooked and could not stop reading. I do not want to give anything away but I felt like I was right there in the story, that I knew the characters, and I went through all of the emotions with them. I was sad, happy, scared, angry, anxious, etc. By the end I knew I had to get the next book ASAP!
Oh wow. This series is a gem!!! I got the first book while in Gatlinburg at a store off a trail. Wow I was not expecting it to be so dang good. Loved the characters and how relatable they are. I read all the books in 2 days and read Room 23. Starting River House now. This is an author I will definitely be on the look out for more great reads to come.
