After years of solitude, Tilda Muirhead's life takes an unexpected twist when she takes a position teaching at the orphanage on Two Harts Ranch following her cross-country pursuit of two brothers obsessed with a treasure map left by their adventurous grandfather. Tilda is now tasked with educating the mischievous brothers, who are bent on remaining out west until they find the hoped-for treasure. Then a man named Ben arrives, claiming to be her own long-lost brother. Raised as an orphan with no memory of her family, Tilda is both fascinated and wary of Ben's sudden interest in finding her.
When Ben's motives grow increasingly suspect, rancher Josh Hart suggests Tilda and the brothers set off on a quest with him that aims to protect Tilda while unearthing the map's secrets. As they navigate the rugged wilderness, Tilda becomes captivated by the history behind the map, though she doubts it leads to anything more than old artifacts. Yet danger looms ever closer, and Tilda and Josh must rely on faith and their blossoming love to navigate the treacherous path ahead.

Every book by this author turns into my favourite, but this one!!! The romance was romancing from the start, I was giggling and kicking my feet and smiling all over the place, it was perfect!!! I know I'm going to have a blast when I do a reread someday.
The treasure hunting took a bit of a backseat in favour of Tilda's family storyline, but I didn't mind because it was equally intriguing.
As always, it was lovely catching up with the other characters from the first book, and learning new historical tidbits along the way. Book three can't come soon enough!!
Some treasures don’t glitter. They’re not locked behind puzzle pieces or buried beneath the ground. They’re found in calling. In community. In the unexpected welcome of a family who wasn’t chasing riches — just living faithfully. And that? That’s priceless.
Tilda Muirhead wasn’t seeking fortune. She wasn’t even seeking a future — just trying to do the next right thing. “I felt like I had a true calling from God to ride on the orphan trains. He put it in my heart to care for orphans after I became one.”
That calling runs through Legends of Gold like a steady current — even when the road is dangerous, her past gets tangled with her present, and trust is hard-earned. This story entertained me and it stirred something in me. Because how often do we think we need to be bold or brilliant, when what God really asks for is quiet obedience?
“She didn’t want to be shoved into this perfectly lovely room and left alone.” That line is lingering in my soul. Because haven’t we all been there? In a place that looks beautiful on the outside… but our heart just isn’t ready to rest?
Tilda’s journey isn’t flashy. It’s faithful. And it reminded me: God doesn’t waste our wandering. Her hesitations, her prayers, her questions — they’re all held. And Josh Hart? A quiet, steady, God-honoring presence. Protective. Funny. The kind of man who doesn’t try to steal the spotlight… just points the way toward peace.
“Loving and forgiving your enemies surely wasn’t the same thing as trusting your enemies, was it? She’d have to pray about that.” Real. Honest. Impactful.
This book made me smile more than once. It made me pause. And it made me remember — sometimes the greatest treasures aren’t gold or maps or mysteries. They’re the people who choose you. The calling God whispers into your heart. And the faith that carries you when you don’t know what’s next.
Legends of Gold is about the deeper discovery: the greatest treasure we’ll ever find is the One who never stops pursuing us. The one, true, living God who is worth seeking, sharing, following, and holding onto with all your heart.
I received a digital copy ARC from the publisher via NetGalley and JustRead Publicity Tours, LLC. I am not required to write a positive review in any way or for any reason. My honest and unbiased opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on the writing style, the pacing, and the story’s content, ensuring transparency and reliability.
I love every book I’ve read by Mary Connealy, and all the reasons can be found in Legends of Gold – her trademark wit and swoony take on ‘true-hearted cowboys falling in love with feisty women’ foremost among them. This story picks up just about right where Whispers of Fortune left off, and while you COULD read this as a standalone if you insist on doing so, you’ll enjoy it even more if you’ve read that first book … well… first. You’ll feel better oriented to the ranch, the characters, and the ongoing treasure plot right from the beginning, but the author does catch you up just fine.
The Harts and the MacKenzies have truly laid claim on my heart – this author has such a gift for creating characters that come vividly to life and feel like dear friends – and it was a pleasure watching Tilda become so easily absorbed into their family. We met Tilda in book one – the orphan train worker sent to find the runaway MacKenzie brothers – but Connealy really did save the best layers of Tilda’s story to be revealed in Legends of Gold. And boy did it take some turns I wasn’t expecting, which raised the suspenseful tension in the story (and, by default, the romantic tension too) and kept me turning the pages. Supporting her through every unexpected twist is sailor-turned-rancher Josh Hart, a character I found quite swoony in book one … and in this story too. The chemistry between Josh and Tilda sparks and sizzles from the beginning (after leaving me laughing out loud over Josh’s initial foot-in-mouth fumbles), and their developing romance had me grinning like a besotted schoolgirl through most of the story.
Bottom Line: Legends of Gold is quintessential Mary Connealy, and I loved every minute of it! History-loving Tilda adds so much to the series-wide treasure hunt arc, and the surprising drama that follows her to California keeps the stakes high when it comes to who she can or can’t trust. And while I love how independent she is, I also couldn’t ask for a better match for Tilda than Josh – he’s the perfect blend of protective and flirty while still letting her be a true equal. When I wasn’t grinning or swooning, I was chuckling at the author’s perfect comedic timing and droll humor – or holding my breath during the more adventurous and suspenseful moments. This is such a fun series and, oof, reading the teaser included at the end for book three has me very impatient for October when Annie & Cord’s story releases! Legends of Gold was a delight to read, and if you need a reason to smile these days this novel will fit the bill.
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)
Second in the Golden State Treasures series, this book is best read after book one because it continues the quest for a treasure that the MacKenzie brothers are hunting. The brothers and friends are following a map that their grandfather left them but that leads to trouble and injuries that stall their search. Home base is Two Harts Ranch which is a refuge for orphans including a school run by familiar characters from other series by Ms. Connealy. Tilda Muirhead has agreed to teach at the ranch but trouble arrives on the train in the form of an unknown, long-lost relative. Josh Hart steps in to rescue this damsel in distress. The author deftly weaves connections together in interesting ways and more than one romance is furthered in the process all with a good dose of her signature humor and solid spiritual representation. I cannot wait for the third book when finding the treasure is sure to be another impressive story. *A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Bethany House on behalf of the author and via NetGalley. I was not required to post a favorable review. All opinions are mine alone.*
[Thank you to @netgalley and to Bethany House Publishers for my gifted copy of this title in exchange for an honest review.]
I finished the first book in the Golden State Treasure book last week, and was so grateful that I could jump right into the next, Legends of Gold. This series is so much fun!
This second book is Josh and Tilde’s story and picks up right where the first book left off. We get to catch up with Brody and Ellie and the boys, and also come to know other characters on the ranch better. On that note–definitely do not try to read this book as a stand-alone!
I wished that this story focused a bit more on the treasure hunt, but I know we will get much more of that when the third and final book of the series releases later this year in October. This story gives a lot of background on Tilde’s character and her life, which we find out is very important to the overall story and treasure. The family mystery/drama between Tilde and the family she didn’t know she had also kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved seeing Josh’s protective side–so sweet.
I loved the marriage of convenience and found family tropes in this story.
Another lovely Mary Connealy novel. Definitely recommend!
After meeting all the players in Whispers of Fortune and the launch of their old Spanish treasure hunt in the rugged California mountains, I was eager to press on with next installment, Legends of Gold. Mary Connealy combines down home tone, fascinating western historical setting, inspirational values, and intriguing character growth and relationships in her tales.
Legends of Gold is book two of the Golden State Treasure series that introduces the next romance pair with former sailor, Josh Hart and orphaned Tilda Muirhead while continuing the ongoing story of the Mackenzies and Westbrooks’ search for treasure. The Golden State Treasure is connected to the Lumber Baron’s Daughters trilogy and share the same world with Michelle Styles and Zane Hart the romance pair of Inventions of the Heart being strong secondary characters in this newer series.
Tilda and Josh were secondary characters in the first book. Tilda followed the two youngest Mackenzie brothers west on an Orphan Train and felt responsible to find them. She herself was an orphan picked up off the streets of New York and eventually adopted by a family looking more for free labor than a daughter. Her tender heart tracks the boys to the Two Hart Ranch where she learns of the generous family who run a school and training program for orphans to live country life and gain knowledge and skills in a wholesome environment. Tilda no sooner sees the program than she feels at home and welcomes the chance to be part of it. Josh Hart, former sailor turned cowboy and orphan wrangler, has stood her protector and friend and she welcomes the attraction they share as well.
Alongside Tilda’s settling in continues the scampish Mackenzie young brothers’ need to press forward and follow their grandfather’s treasure map. They are joined in their excitement by their grandfather’s old partner, Mr. Westbrook and his grandson, Cord, a very pregnant Michelle, and Josh and Tilda. Brody and Ellie promised to help before they must fulfill his duty to the retiring man who sponsored him by partnering him in his Boston medical practice, but Brody is struggling to recover from a bullet wound received in the earlier effort to find the family treasure and thwart thieves. Josh and Tilda step in for Brody. Tilda is a history buff and Michelle knows Spanish so they help decipher the clues within the artifacts already found, the map, the journal, and the extra pages of notes. The treasure hunt looks to move forward, but again, complications come when Tilda gets a stunning surprise from her past and a ruthless person determined to have their way.
Legends of Gold expands to include Brody and Ellie’s ongoing story while also adding in Josh and Tilda’s part with her needing to learn the truth of her past while let go bitter feelings about her past even as Josh wisely promotes the ‘trust but verify’ version of thought. Strong additional plot threads are present with the younger Mackenzie’s dangerous fixation on the treasure like their obsessed father that threatens to put Spanish gold in priority over their family, Michelle’s pregnancy, and a rising whiff of attraction between two more characters, Annie Hart Lane and Cord Westbrook. The historical elements of Conquistador treasure hunt are a rich and tantalizing central plot thread I really enjoyed.
So much is going on, but it winds together perfectly in one cohesive story. I am eager to press on to the final stage of the story for the extended Hart and Mackenzie families. The light inspirational blended with historical and romance hit the spot and I recommend others stake their claim on this latest Mary Connealy series.
I rec'd an eARC via NetGalley from Bethany House and Austeprose to read in exchange for an honest review.
My full review will post at Books of My Heart on 7.23.25.
Though the author does a great job giving a bit of the backstory from book one, do yourself a favor and read Whispers of Fortune so you don't miss one bit of this story of searching for ancient gold and finding love along the way that continues from book to book. In Legends of Gold, we learn much about Tilda Muirhead, the young New York City orphanage employee tasked with finding Lock and Thayne MacKenzie who slipped away from her care on an orphan train. The boys have serious treasure hunting fever. Josh Hart, of Two Harts Ranch, hasn't given much thought to having a wife and family but that changes after he meets Tilda. There's a lot going on in this book, which makes it hard to put down. This series has a connection to The Lumber Baron's Daughters books, which made it particularly fun for me. I always enjoy when authors include characters from previous books. I found Legends of Gold to be absolutely delightful! I received a complimentary copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.

I am reviewing a copy of Legends of Gold through Bethany House Publishers and Netgalley:
Tilda Muirhead's life takes an unexpected turn when she accepts a teaching position at Two Harts Ranch, after years of solitude. Following her cross country pursuit of two brothers obsessed with a treasure map left by their grandfather. Tilda is now tasked with educating those mischievous MacKenzie boys, who are bent on remaining out west with the rest of their family until they find the hoped-for treasure. A man named Ben arrives, claiming to be her own long-lost brother. Raised as an orphan with no memory of her past, Tilda is both fascinated and wary of Ben's sudden interest in finding her.
After Ben’s motives grow increasingly suspect, rancher Josh Hart suggests Tilda and the young MacKenzies set off on a quest with him that aims to protect Tilda while unearthing the map's secrets. As they explore the wilderness, Tilda becomes engrossed in the history behind the map, though she doubts it leads to anything more than old artifacts. Still danger looms ever closer, and Tilda and Josh must rely on faith and their blossoming love to navigate the treacherous path ahead.
Hold on for a fast and furious love story/treasure hunt/mystery! Legends of Gold picks up right where Book 1 Whispers of Fortune leaves off. (These definitely need to be read as a set, more like one long story divided into three parts!) Tilda and Josh fall in love at warp speed, but gosh are they cute together, all awkward and sweet. Offering to protect Tilda from her questionable family by marrying her swiftly and decisively, Josh can’t believe his good fortune when she says yes. And his love awakens dreams long buried in Tilda’s heart. The quest for the MacKenzie Treasure takes them all on an adventure. We also discover how Brody and Ellie are doing, what Brody’s rascal brothers are up to now, and for fans of the Lumber Baron’s Daughters series, we get a nice dose of Zane and Michelle in this one too.
Fun and fast-paced, Legends of Gold is another great read from Mary Connealy and I love that this series follows up the Lumber Baron’s Daughters story arc with stories for all of Zane’s siblings. Looking forward to the finale.
I received a complementary copy of this book from the publisher and Just Read Tours via NetGalley. I was not asked to leave a positive review and my opinions are my own.
As with other books by this author, the story is a light-hearted read with a sprinkling of heart-warming wit. The characters are fleshed out and fill their roles complimenting both the story line and the other characters. An assortment of strong, defending, and willing men on the ranch as well as gifted and strong women blend beautifully; and these strong characters keep the trouble makers at bay.
The troublesome issue of orphaned children prevalent during that period of history continues to flow through this series. Many of these orphans have found a home and shelter on the Hart Ranch. And as begun in the first book in the series, Whispers of Fortune, the search for treasure continues.
In Legends of Gold a bit of real California history going back to the exploration by Spanish Conquistadors is woven into the story line. I found that interesting.
Books by Mary Connealy always satisfy and are enjoyable. Part of this is the trust factor - they are squeaky clean, faith-based (but not preachy), and sometimes elicit a chuckle.
Don't miss this one.
I received a complimentary copy to facilitate a review. Opinions are mine, alone and are freely given.
always nice to run into old friends from previous series some bits seemed bit contrived to fit story mostly good fun read just not sure up to what use to by her
This is book two in the series and definitely not a stand alone although there is enough information if you stumble on this book first. I did like this one better than the first one. There were some interesting reveals relating to Tilda's past and I feel it moved the story of the treasure forward nicely.
This is second book in the Golden State Treasure series. I was excited for this book to come out as the first book was very good. It didn't disappoint. This book is Josh and Tilda's story. Tilda arrives at Two Hart Ranch looking for two runaway boys from the orphan train. Tilda gets a surprise when someone shows up at the ranch claiming to be her brother. She has always believed she was an orphan and had no family. All is not as it seems. A great book from start to finish. The teaser at the end of the book makes me anxious to read the next installment.
I received this book from Bethany House Publishing via Net/Galley for an honest review. I wasn't compensated in any way.
A mix of family drama, treasure hunt, and smart women in one book or one series. Tilda accidentally gets caught in a situation where she has to dig up for treasure but somehow finds her lost family. And maybe for Tilda, she found that 300 years old artifacts is much more believable than a mysterious brother that suddenly came to the ranch to claim his family back.
This is a POV of a person who reads only the second book of the series. I don’t recommend reading it as a standalone because the story is a continuous journey of the treasure hunt and you may get lost of what was currently happening in the second part of the journey. At first I was overwhelmed with the character's introduction in the beginning but slowly got right on track as the story progressed. Although it is possible to read it, you might get confused at one point and have to revisit the first book synopsis several times to catch up with the story, like I did. And they did kindly explain their past journey in between the story too so if you don’t want to do all those figuring out the plot, you should read the first book first. Personally, I would look forward to reading the third book because of the interesting plot happening there but I might read the first book only if I feel like it.
As someone who reads historical fiction I was left amaze to see a lot of smart women represented in one book. It was refreshing to see women being respected instead of being called a witch every time they show a tiny bit of critical thinking skills. However it was a bit disappointing that the treasure hunt was too short as the story focused more on Tilda’s family drama. But I do understand it was a long quest of the MacKenzie treasure hunt but it feels too short than what I believe compared to the first book. Romance wise, it was short and simple. Avid romance readers might get a bit disappointed but will enjoy the treasure hunt and the dramas.
And thank you NetGalley, publisher and Mary Connealy for the ARC Copy! I enjoy the story well.
“You boys see this as an adventure, one that’s fun and real interesting. But don’t let it take over your life. Remember what’s important. Faith and the people who love you and taking every opportunity to do good for others.”
A treasure hunt, a little danger, some family drama, faith, and romance all combine for this wonderful adventure. I loved being back at the Two Harts ranch and uncovering more of the MacKenzie treasure mystery. (This is the second book in the series but can be enjoyed as a standalone. The details of the first book are very succinctly given in the course of this book.)
Tilda is a gentle, caring, intelligent woman. I loved how she felt called to work with orphans yet realized the how of that work could change. I enjoyed seeing her use her knowledge to teach but also in the treasure hunt. She had some huge surprises and handled them all with strength. I absolutely loved Tilda and Josh together! Josh is determined, gentle, and a true mountain cowboy. He’s patient and firm with Thayne and Lock. He’s tender, loving, and protective of Tilda. And an incredible brother, friend, and leader.
I enjoyed getting more time with the MacKenzies, Harts, and Westbrooks. They are all wonderful characters and I’m excited for Cord and Annie’s book and the conclusion of the MacKenzie treasure hunt.
A few more quotes: “We need more time to get to know each other better, but we were going to end up married eventually, don’t you think?” “Don’t you think is the wrong thing to say to me right now. Thinking is beyond me.”
“I’m going to treat you like . . . well, like I’ve found my very own treasure. This is a better treasure than any gold that’s been lost in those mountains.”
“You can say I’m doing it for you and how I’m a hero and such, but the truth is, I want to keep you so badly, you’re never gonna escape me.”
This is the second book in the Golden State Treasure series and continues the story of the hunt for lost treasure by the two Mackenzie boys and those of the Two Harts Ranch. This story picks up with Brody Mackenzie and his new wife Ellie, directly after the last book. We are also given Ellie’s brother Josh Hart’s and Tilda Muirhead’s story. Tilda has been searching for the boys ever since they ran away from the orphan train.
So, while this continues the overarching theme, the spotlight does shine on Josh and Tilda who have come up against another situation that has taken them by surprise. Tilda’s backstory of being an orphan has really opened her heart to orphans and what she finds at Two Hart’s Ranch is a place she might be able to call home and help orphans like herself. That is until a man shows up claiming to be her long lost brother and wants to take her back to her father and the rest of the family. There are some major secrets, so I will just leave that there. Anyway, Tilda has finally for the first time in her life found a home and a possible love match with Josh, so she is reluctant to leave.
There is quite a bit of action and adventure in this novel with a few surprise twists. The love match is a bit instant, and not a favorite trope of mine. However, the necessity for certain plot lines becomes very evident and important. I do wish there was a list of characters to refer back to. The Two Hearts Ranch has quite a few characters living and working on it. Overall, another Hart sibling meets their love match and the mystery of the treasure looms in the background.
I was provided a copy of this novel by Bethany House publishers through Interviews & Reviews. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.
I was thrilled to see this book cross my desk since I enjoyed the first book in the series so much. I was excited to see where the story would take us next. Luckily I had read the first book in the series, so had a basic background already for what was going on and was able to see familiar characters. But even if you missed the first book, you will find you can keep up with the story. Once again, author Mary Connealy weaves a story that is imaginative, exciting, and informative. She transports readers to the past, creating scenes that you can picture in your mind and giving you insight into a different period of time. Her writing was well researched and full of descriptive detail that brought the era to life in an educational manner without seeming academic. The love story within was not the main focus, unfolding easily and serenely in the backgound of the plot. I love the treasure hunting aspect, too. I have always been fascinated with legends like the one they were pursuing and found myself eager to see if they'd find what they were looking for. The elements of faith were built into the story and didn't feel preachy or overwhelming, giving you a clean, enjoyable historical story. I also appreciate the humor throughout the book, as well as the mystery of the long-lost brother who is sketchy and possibly dangerous. Overall, I felt it was a great continuation of the series and I am eager to read the final book in the series. If you enjoy historical fiction and clean romance, this is a book you need to add to your to-read list. I was very pleased with my time spent reading it.
Tilda Muirhead came to the Two Harts Ranch in the first book in this series, when she followed the MacKenzie brothers. The teenagers had been in pursuit of their grandfather’s buried treasure and still had found only a portion of it. Tilda’s love of history lands her a job at the California ranch’s orphanage. She’s spent most of her childhood as an orphan, and her deepest desire is to help them. She has never dreamed of marriage—Josh Hart might change her mind.
Josh is part-owner of the large ranch. He took the reins to run it while his brother, Zane, was away. Josh's feelings for Tilda grow as the schoolteacher flourishes in her new job.
When someone claiming to be her family member comes to the ranch, Tilda is fearful. Can she trust Josh to protect her?
Unexpected danger escalates in this historical romance. The story is told through multiple viewpoints, including through characters in the first book with unresolved issues. The author leaves us with reasons to anticipate the next book.
Readers see characters they’ve learned to love in an earlier series.
The author does a good job summarizing what the reader needs to know from earlier stories. Even so, the story builds as a saga. I believe that readers of the earlier series will receive a deeper impact from the stories. This was a page-turner for me! I will look for more books by this author.
Are you ready for another romantic cowboy comedy from Mary Connealy? A chance to travel back to a time when the Western frontier was still untamed, when good guys wore white hats and villains deserved to wear black. This book's for you! Legends of Gold is an adventure filled with danger, suspense, and a sweet connection between Tilda Muirhead and Josh Hart. Would it be possible for a big-city teacher to adapt to life on a California ranch?
Connealy's female characters are always strong and capable, but Tilda's past contains an unknown secret. Looks like she needs protection from a strong hero, and Josh appears to be the man! I also enjoyed that several characters from previous books are mentioned in Legends of Gold. I loved this reunion with the Stiles sisters, aka The Lumber Baron's Daughters!
Looking for Western adventure with humor, romance, a treasure hunt, and pure inspiration? Grab a copy of Legends of Gold, the second book of the Golden State Treasure series.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and publisher. There was no obligation for a positive review.
Tilda was faced with major challenges throughout the book. She had fallen in love with the Two Harts Ranch and felt she had found a home. I felt sorry for her when her previously unknown family members kept showing up expecting her to go back to New York City with them. I cannot imagine leaving the ranch to return to a city where she had so many bad memories, yet no memories of these people claiming to be her family. I could almost feel sorry for Ben, except he was old enough to know better and to make better decisions. It seemed he was walking a tightrope and got caught in the middle buffeted by strong winds. After making a terrible choice to kidnap Tilda to take her to her father, he realized his father did not approve of his methods, even if it was an attempt to make the father happy. What a mess he was in when he showed back up in Dorada Rio. I liked all the action and the efforts to find the treasure, regardless of whether it turned out to be a huge sum of gold or another kind of treasure. It seems Thayne and Lock continue to be forces to be reckoned with as they keep champing at the bit to get on with the treasure hunt.
I thought this book would be worthwhile to read because it provided insight into what people experienced when traveling out West. Mary Connealy writes a lot about this era.
Tilda Muirhead decided to take a job as a teacher in California. She was a very caring young woman. Two orphaned children needed her guidance.
Along the way, Tilda meets John Hart. Tilda and Josh form a bond, and there is much adventure ahead. A long-lost brother shows up and causes danger for Tilda. He is very insistent that Tilda travels with him back to New York. The father that Tilda knew never paid much attention to her, and she did not want to travel back there.
A partial treasure map was found, and a lot of interest was taken in following the clues to find the treasure. Of course, much adventure lies ahead along the way.
Tilda's father and sister show up, and Tilda is torn between her romantic feelings for Josh and her new family life.
I received a complimentary copy courtesy of Bethany House Publishers through Interviews & Reviews for my honest opinion.
Wow!!! Runaway’s, hidden maps, and treasures oh my! Tilda Muirhead has left New York to search for the missing boys Thane and Lochlan MacKenzie from the Orphan Train she was supervising. Her search lands her on Two Hart’s Ranch in CA. The boys are continuing their search for their missing treasure found within the pages of their grandfather journal. Tilde plans to return to NY are changing when offered a teaching job on the ranch. Josh Hart is not the man she thought she would ever be interested in but she is learning there is more than Josh than just a cowboy. Turns out he is the best tracker around! An interesting turn is Tilde is not the orphan she has been told she was but her family is rather sneaking and suspicious in their unusual interest which makes for some trouble. Will the boy’s find the treasure and Tilde the truth and can Josh help them all? Pick up a copy and see!!!! Definitely best 2nd in a series edition I have ever read! I was issued a ARC by NetGalley and the publisher but was not required to leave a review. All views expressed are solely mine.
Picking in the wake of the previous book in the series, the Mackenzie boys are still searching for the treasure, and Tilda accepts a teaching position at Hart Ranch.
A full cast of characters and storylines with a lot going on a building on the foundation of the previous book, so you miss a lot if you skip to this book. Tilda has never known her family, so when someone comes into her life claiming to be a long lost family member, she is intrigued. Josh Hart is worried about Tilda, and that the promises she is being made are not true, but I liked how he stood by her and helped her search for answers. There are also strong themes of faith and family throughout.
I liked that it includes the couple from the previous story, and continues their story as well. There is a lot going on, and a lot of characters with connecting threads. I'm excited to see how it all turns out in the final book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
In the second installment of the Golden State Treasure series, we get to learn more about Tilda, the orphanage representative who managed to lose custody of the Mackenzie twins on the train ride West. Little does she know but eventually learns that those rascals played the orphanage to get a free ride out West to search for treasure. When Tilda is kidnapped from Two Harts Ranch, Josh suggests Tilda help search for the hidden treasure and hopefully stay hidden from the kidnappers. Throughout the process of searching for treasure, Tilda brings a vast amount of historical knowledge to the trip, and she loves every minute of it!
Can Josh keep Tilda safe? He has some pretty creative ideas on how to do that!
Come ride along in this great adventure and fall in love with everyone at Two Harts Ranch! I highly recommend this novel to all who love Christian fiction, western fiction, and an amazing HEA!
In 1874 the legends of fantastical gold finds were the stuff dreams were made of and the young MacKensie boys were no different than any other young men with gold fever in their veins. Were there more coins out there and if there were, could they find them? All they needed was the other half of the map.
Tilda Muirhead had been tasked with finding home for the children on her orphan train, but the MacKensie boys had their own ideas. Finding them at Two Harts Ranch was just the beginning. An unknown brother turns up and sets his mind on returning Tilda to NYC - but is he really her brother? Add plenty of excitement, an unbelievable archeological find and more and you will not set this installment of the Golden State Treasures aside before the end, and that will leave you waiting for the next one. "Men are honorable...They face up to trouble. They help when the family needs help."
I loved this book, it was the second installment in the Golden State Treasure series. Mary Connealy writes fantastic books set in the west, and this one lives up to her reputation. The last book (Whispers of Fortune) ended with a treasure hunt, and the second book picks up right where it left off. Tilda, who you meet in Book 1, reveals more of her past in the book and I found it very fun to read. I loved the comments (see the quote above) that Josh made about being a man, and this guided the rest of the book as different characters faced their individual challenges. This, combined with Tilda and her tenuous relationship with someone trying to connect her with her birth family, made for a fantastic story!
Thank you to NetGalley for the advance copy of this book. A review was not required.
I really enjoyed this romance with plenty of drama, fun, and delightful characters. There are also some villains to challenge the situation, though in this case one will have to take a closer look at one to figure out if he is bad or good. This second book in a series continues a search for gold and more as a couple of mischievous teens involve the Two Harts Ranch family in their treasure hunt map. Tilda, their former temporary guardian and now history teacher will find her match in Josh Hart, but trouble from an unexpected source will force a marriage of convenience and an escape to the countryside with the two young gold hunters. Interesting situations and twists make this a book that will have the reader turning pages. I highly recommend the book and the series. I read an advance copy. All opinions are my own.
