There’s nothing like the unconditional love of a rescue dog and their ability to bring people together as these meant-to-be-couples are about to find out in these brand-new sweet and romantic tales from bestselling authors Lori Foster and Maisey Yates.
The Odd Couple * LORI FOSTER Ford Caruso agrees to an unusual favor—playing the part of new boyfriend for his adamantly single, irresistibly sexy neighbor Skye Fairchild, whose clueless ex refuses to accept his fate. But as Skye starts dropping by to use Ford’s pool, and even plan dates, the charade begins to feel satisfyingly real, complete with choosing rescue dogs together—a giant mutt and a fierce little chihuahua who adore each other. From one odd couple to another, some things are destined . . .
Force of Nature * MAISEY YATES Rescuing animals is in Lydia Clay’s blood, so when a mournful old cattle dog named Hank shows up at the shelter, she knows exactly where to take to cattle rancher Remington Lane, her brother’s hot, and usually grumpy, best friend. Hank belonged to Remy’s estranged father, which is one strike against him, but when Lydia offers to help the man ease into dog ownership, he can’t say no. And as he and Lydia work together, it looks like an old dog can actually teach this brooding cattleman some heart-warming new tricks . . .
Since first publishing in January 1996, Lori Foster has become a USA Today, Publisher’s Weekly and New York Times bestselling author. Lori has published through a variety of houses, including Kensington, St. Martin’s, Harlequin, Silhouette, Samhain, and Berkley/Jove. She is currently published with HQN.
Lori hosts a very special annual “Reader & Author” event in West Chester, Ohio. Proceeds from the event have benefited many worthy causes, including the Hamilton County YWCA Battered Women’s Shelter, the Animal Adoption Foundation, The Conductive Learning Center for children with spina bifida and cerebral palsy, and The One Way Farm, Children’s Home.
Skye and Ford have an electricity between them that has you anticipating their potential romance and also endearing you to them both. They are so clearly meant to go together like the odd couple doggie best friends in the story.
The dogs stole the show (as it should be). However, the romance keeps pace with the lovable dogs. I love the pretend boyfriend trope in Lori Foster's story. I love the love affair between Ford and Maybelline the most.
Force of Nature by Maisey Yates
I love Lydia and her heart full of love for all animals. She feels called to save them all and I certainly identify with her. She wants to help the difficult and the special needs pups. This story speaks to my heart.
She is pretty much the same with Remy and he couldn't have a better person wanting to make his life better. You feel so much for him and his hard childhood. I love the way the author makes you feel what Lydia is feeling.
Then here is Hank. The dog had it rough and needs some good in his life. I love that the dog is what ties everything together. I love how he is healing to Remy.
The family ties in this story are strong and I love that all of the love is given so freely to many who didn't think he was worthy. This is an uplifting and healing story with plenty of romance.
I loved both of these stories in different ways and they are both so well written. The dogs make it so much more special and show everyone how much a dog can truly bring to your life simply by being who they are.
The Two of Us is a collection of two sweet and sexy romances from authors Lori Foster and Maisey Yates. While these two stories were short, they packed a punch and left a smile on my face.
*Thank you so much to Kensington Books for the opportunity to read and review this title*
The Two of Us by Lori Foster and Maisey Yates is a compilation of two short stores. One written by each author. Both stories surround the adoption of dogs and rescues, where two couples find love. 💕
The Odd Couple by Lori Foster is a cute little story, about a man and his neighbor who oddly fell in love. He saw the real her, despite her having a twin sister. It’s a closed door romance so no spice within the romance. The writing is simple and easy to follow. As with any short story, I don’t get invested much because it always ends to soon.
Force of Nature by Maisey Yates is about an odd young woman who seems to collect animals of any breed who are in need of help. She’s also a virgin. She is very much in love with her brothers best friend, whom her family took in as a teenager because his home life wasn’t very good. The story was pretty predictable but still cute and good.
Overall this is a cutesy compilation of short stories and rescue animals and definitely any little old ladies interest or animal lover!! The short stories are also good if you have a short attention span. I will be leaning my copy to my grandma and her sister as they like cute romances.
The Two of Us is the latest benefit book out by Lori Foster and Maisey Yates. It contains two of the sweetest stories. Of the two, "The Odd Couple" was most definitely my favorite. I loved watching Ford and Skye fall for each other. Ford was set in his routine of sales and friends when his neighbor asks for a favor. Skye wasn't looking for a relationship, she just needed someone to deal with her ex. Add in two adorable dogs and you have a love match. Ford's friends were a lot of fun. I will have to seek out the other benefit stories that they are featured in to find out how they found their happy endings.
"Force of Nature" was a sweet friends to lovers story. It was a little slow for me but at least is was short. Because they had history their love story was very smooth. I was happy that Remy didn't stay too in his doubt and finally realize he was good enough for Lydia. There is something for everyone in this anthology. I highly recommend it.
I received this copy as a GoodReads drawing, first-reads.... My opinions are my own.
Cute double-novella featuring somewhat mismatched couples..... not QUITE Grumpy/Sunshine for the Lori Foster novella, but definitely two people who had to find their commonality before they could settle into a relationship. The Maisey Yates story was of the grumpy/sunshine variety. I honestly felt like both stories could have been longer and fully fleshed out the character growth of the characters that led to their viability as couples, but given the novella status of both stories, the growth just "happened" in fast order, and we didn't get to see it happen through extended storytelling.
I was SLIGHTLY disappointed in that the last 30 pages were teasers for the NEXT full-sized novels for each author, instead of those pages being dedicated to more fully-fleshing-out the characters in the stories featured in this book.
This book contains 2 novellas, and I enjoyed both! My review to each book is below.
******* The Odd Couple by Lori Foster
I love when Lori Foster builds on an existing series so you can read about the next generation and associated friends. Ford and Skye are neighbors, but it wasn't until Skye needed a favor that they got to know each other. The favor? Help persuade her ex that it's finally over. Ford definitely did not want his friends assuming that role.
During this time, they learned more about each other and why they believe they are not relationship material, but it's their adoption of 2 rescued dogs that bring them together. Ford already had forged a bond with a very large older dog named Maybeline. And Maybeline loves a very tiny dog named Tank. Ford decreed them the Odd Couple because of their many differences. You will love their antics and how they help to bring together this couple. Skye's twin sister, Laylee, is also introduced and hopefully we will soon see her and Knox's story.
Lori Foster includes everything from neighbors, friends, romance and rescued dogs. This book will not disappoint!

Force of Nature by Maisey Yates
Remy and Lydia have known each other since their teenage years. Remy had a lot of abuse and neglect in his childhood. With Lydia's brother being his best friend, her family helped raise him and showed him what a loving family is. While growing up, Remy looked at Lydia as a little sister. Lydia looked at Remy as the love of her life.
Lydia works for an animal shelter and brings Remy a dog named Hank who also suffered from abuse and neglect from Remy's father. Through helping Remy with Hank, Remy realizes he cares more for Lydia than a sister but questions whether he should be allowed to have these feelings since her family is the only family he's known. Will he mirror his parents' example, or can he overcome and find love?
This is a wonderful story of love and family. I look forward to reading more of Maisey's books.
********** This is my honest review from the ARC received.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book, provided by Kensington Publishing via Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own. 3.5 stars. Two stories involving animals, their antics and how people bond through them, “The odd couple” (Lori Foster) and “Force of Nature” (Maisey Yates) are also about healing and hope after pain. I liked how protective and sweet Ford turns out to be with Skye and how naturally he reads the situation/relationship between the twins (Lori Foster). Their friendship and romance is interesting to watch, both are honest with each other. The compassion and steadiness in Ford is admirable, particularly considering his childhood. I liked how he dealt with Skye’s self esteem issues. I loved the grumpy hero, Remy, in Maisey Yates’ story. He tries being the cold, inflexible, even mean person, like his father, but it all crumbles when faced with an old, neglected dog and a caring, special woman.
This was such a sweet and short romance story! It gives off insta-love vibes even though we as readers are told that Ford and Skye have known of each other for a little over a year since becoming neighbors. Chemistry is on point -- these two are definitely attracted to one another physically but I love how Ms. Foster gives depth to their relationship growth - emotionally as well as relationally -- that it is not all physical attraction and lust. It was a fun fake boyfriend trope!
Skye is an attractive woman that doesn't truly know it as she has felt overshadowed by her twin sister, Layla and the outgoing personality her twin has compared to her own soft-spoken self. A twin myself, I found myself being able to relate to the twins and the relationship they have with one another. The sisters do compliment each other well it is that Skye really needed to spread her wings a bit more.....and that she did when she courageously went and asked her neighbor, Ford, to help her out of a problem getting rid of a pursuing guy that just wasn't taking her hints.
Ford, athletic but not overly beefy, exudes confidence but I love that he really is a homebody but willing to defend Skye. He is sweet and humble but hot and knows it. He is such a softy, especially for a sweet mutt at the animal shelter he had Maybelline. I love how he never hesitates to compliment and build up Skye despite the initial agreement of their fake relationship arrangement. Man does he have a way with words!
Fun and wonderful characters throughout, adorable dogs and the "fun" being new pet owners brings, no explicit language, plenty of kisses and there is open door scene but most of the details are implied and not graphic whatsoever. I always appreciate when authors give an epilogue to give a more full closure of the relationship. I really hope Ms. Foster will write a happily ever after for her twin sister!
I enjoyed this book more than the one that follows it.
Force of Nature by Maisey Yates -- 3 STARS
A quick romance read. A brothers best friend/best friend's sister mixed with opposites attract trope. Lydia Clay, a sweet girl who is full of life and always sees deep beyond the appearance in person and animal for that matter. She has a heart of gold and longs to see those neglected or damaged to be changed for the better. Her passion and compassionate heart is very admirable. She's always been in love iwht her brother's best friend. The story is one about getting him to see her beyond the young "girl" he knew when taken into her family's home and the "woman" she is in the present. Remy had a rough family life, and really is indebted in a grateful way to the Clay family for taking him in and showing a loving family unit and taking him as one of their own. Despite his childhood setbacks, he made a way for himself and didn't let what he parents were like affect the person he would become. Would he be able to see past his traumatic family upbringing? Would being together be good or bad, and how would it affect the family dynamics?
I really loved the Clay family - especially Lydia's mother, Nancy. She is a gem. This was not a clean story by any means.....some explicit language/profanity is used throughout the story, the intimate scene is open door and took several pages but it was not overly graphic but showed the deeper emotional connection the two were developing for one another. Lydia's brother is in a homosexual relationship/marriage. It was a fast relationship but you could excuse it since they both had known each other for a long time prior.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for an advanced copy of this book. All my thoughts and opinions are entirely my own..
When I saw The Two of Us featured stories by Lori Foster and Maisey Yates, it became an instant “add to shelf” moment. As a longtime fan of Lori Foster’s work, and someone just starting to explore Maisey Yates’ books, I was thrilled to receive an advanced reader copy (ARC) of this romance duo. Both novellas in this book brought unique charm, swoon-worthy moments, and heartfelt connections. Here’s a closer look at each story:
“The Honeymoon Cottage” by Lori Foster
Synopsis:
When locals hire wedding planner Yardley Belanger to plan an extravagant wedding in a small town, she isn’t expecting the best man to challenge everything she thought she knew about love. Enter Travis Long—steady, kind, and just the right mix of patience and persistence.
Standout Elements:
Foster does what she does best—crafts a small-town romance with warmth, slow-burning chemistry, and grounded, relatable characters. Yardley is fiercely independent, yet deeply vulnerable when it comes to matters of the heart. Travis, on the other hand, is a walking green flag.
Favorite Quote:
“Sometimes, the person you plan forever with isn’t the one you expected—it’s the one who sees you, truly sees you, from the start.”
Character Likability:
Yardley is incredibly likable—driven, competent, and with just enough sass to keep Travis on his toes. Travis? Utterly lovable. Their banter, mutual respect, and genuine care made their love story one to root for.
“The Rancher’s Summer Secret” by Maisey Yates
Synopsis:
Penny Gardener returns to Gold Valley, hiding more than just a broken heart. When her path collides with Colt Daniels—a rugged rancher with a past of his own—their chemistry sizzles, but their secrets threaten to pull them apart.
Standout Elements:
This was my first Maisey Yates story, and I was so impressed. She creates palpable emotion and tension between her characters, and the rural setting is described with such vivid texture that I felt transported. This is more of a second-chance, complicated-romance story with emotional depth.
Favorite Quote:
“Sometimes love doesn’t come in easy packages. Sometimes it’s the hard choices, the messy truths, that make it real.”
Character Likability:
Colt is a classic Yates hero—gritty but soft underneath, and Penny is both strong and endearingly uncertain. Their emotional baggage felt authentic and well-paced, making their eventual connection satisfying.
Final Thoughts:
If you’re looking for a double dose of heart-melting romance, The Two of Us is a perfect pick. Lori Foster delivers her signature warmth, while Maisey Yates brings emotional grit and depth. Both stories are layered with relatable characters, strong chemistry, and settings that feel like home.
I highly recommend this book, whether you’re a longtime Lori Foster fan like me, or just dipping your toes into Maisey Yates’ writing. You’ll come away with a full heart and maybe a new favorite author.
Content Warning: Some mild emotional trauma and past relationship references.
These two story has amazing friends that are great additions to the books overall story that have strong supporting rolls, however it still centers around the main couple.
This is a love story that is created from friendship, loyalty and the need to make each other live again. There are wonderful twists and turns in this book and I'm personally so grateful I was gifted a copy for an honest review, it was such a good book. The book was very well written and moved without any gaps in the story. I highly recommend this book it will keep you captivated to the very Happy Ever after!

These book has everything I love in a book. Then you add that it's beautifully written and believable. It is easily a five star read. Written in single POV this story flows so incredibly well that the next thing you know your 80% into the book and loving every second of it. The believable way the characters interact is perfect. Run, Hop, Jump or use your (1 click) finger to do whatever you have to do and get this amazing book. It'll break your heart, you'll want to scream with frustration and it'll let you discover that love just might conquer all. The chemistry is steamy and sweet and oh so romantic.
Lori Foster is an old fave, but this is my first Maisey Yates story! It was a fun compilation!
The Odd Couple by Lori Foster continues with her yearly benefit books, featuring the same friend group. These stories always involve animal rescue of some kind, and all her advance and royalties go to her local no-kill shelter, which is wonderful. This is the story of Ford and Skye, who are next-door neighbors. Skye needs a temporary fake boyfriend to fend off an unwanted suitor, and Ford agrees to help her out. But once they spend time together, they realize how good, and how REAL, they could be. I enjoyed their banter, and Skye's twin was great as a side character, as were the pups. This was a closed door story, which is out of the norm for these, in my experience. I also enjoyed seeing the friends from prior books!
Force of Nature by Maisey Yates has a heroine with a lifelong love for her older brother's best friend (my favorite trope!) and a clueless hero, who finally figures out that his friend's baby sis has grown up, with the help of some rescue animals, of course! Lydia has never met an animal she didn't want to help, and Remy is no different. He had a lot of childhood trauma from his deadbeat parents, and Lydia's family took him in as a teenager. He really has to come to terms with all of that, and realize that he has more family in his life than he thought. Also, he has to come to the conclusion that he could be a good fit for Lydia after all. This one actually made me cry, so bonus points for that!!
Overall this was a sweet and fun compilation, and I enjoyed myself! I would definitely be interested in reading more of Maisey Yates in the future!
I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher. This review is my personal opinion, voluntarily given. Reviewed by Megan from Romanced by the Book
Put a dog on the cover of a book and it's the first one I pick up. Put two rescue dogs on the cover and I'm moving it to the top of my tbr. Pair it with two long-time favorite authors and I'm all in. In The Two of Us, Lori Foster and Maisey Yates bring readers two heartwarming contemporary romance stories of couples finding their way to one another, aided by the unconditional love of dogs.
"The Odd Couple" by Foster features one of my favorite tropes: fake dating between a relationship-averse man and a woman who has been given good reason not to trust men. I really enjoyed these two and the issues they both needed to work through. There's a terrific friend group (Foster does those so well), some complicated family dynamics, a big ole mutt who looks scary but has a marshmallow heart (and stole mine), and a happy ending for both two and four-legged characters. Plus, I hope, the potential for a future story between Skye's twin sister and Ford's best friend.
When I'm looking for emotional depth, complicated family relationships, and hard-won happy endings, Maisey Yates is an author to whom I frequently turn. In "Force of Nature," Yates brings all of those facets to the page along with another favorite trope: best friend's little sister. Add in the fact that Remy's abusive family had him living with Lydia's family through high school and you have a now-grown man who has two reasons to keep his hands off the woman who is capturing more of his heart each day. Lydia and Remy absolutely stole my heart. I love how he embraces her individuality and loves her for it, not in spite of it. I love how she refuses to give up on him, how insistent she is on showing him - by bringing Hank into his life - the road to healing. These characters - and their journey - are so well developed. I was completely invested in them and their road to a happy ending. Also, the scene between Remy and Lydia's mother near the end of the book had me sobbing...in a good way.
If you're looking for heartwarming stories of love, healing, friendship, family, and the unconditional love of a rescue dog in your life, grab a copy of The Two of Us. It has my enthusiastic recommendation.
ARC received from publisher via NetGalley Fair and unbiased review
Lori Foster writes amazing love stories. When she adds pets, she writes amazing, adorably humorous love stories. This is what you will get with The Odd Couple. This is a sweet novella about finding love when you are trying to avoid it. Skye and Ford are next door neighbors, they are known to each other but generally their paths do not cross. Until the day Skye crosses the property line and propositions Ford or any of his friends to be her fake date to dissuade a guy who cannot take a hint. Fans of Lori Foster will recognize Ford and his friends from some of her previous books. Ford agrees to go along with it and Skye and Ford find they enjoy each other’s company a lot more than they anticipated. This is a quick read with a cute love story, a lot of laughs, great characters, and two charming dogs. One of my favorite things about Lori Foster’s storytelling is she does not fall into tropes or have a formula to her writing. She continues to write original witty stories, with characters that are relatable, and have a guaranteed happy ending.
Force of Nature by Maisey Yates
This is the first books I have read by Maisey Yates and I was not disappointed. She has an extensive collection of works that I am looking forward to reading. Force of Nature is a fun love story including two of my favorite story elements pets and found families. Remington Lane did not have an easy time growing up, until he was taken in by his best friend’s family when he was a teenager. He is a successful ranch owner who would do anything for the Clays who gave him a family and a home, including keeping his feelings for his best friend’s younger sister, Lydia, to himself. Lydia Clay, devotes her life to saving wounded and abandoned animals. She has devoted her heart to loving Remy. She just needs to convince him that they belong together. This is a quick read but a great story with interesting characters. I would love to read more about the Clay family because they are so wonderful.
I received an advanced reader copy for my honest review of this book.
The Odd Couple by Lori Foster When opposites attract. Ford and Skye couldnt be more opposite and more perfect for each other. Neither wanting a serious relationship, a deal is struck and well best laid plans dont always work out. The relationship starst out rocky, neighbors only, attempting to deny the attraction and trying hard no to even be friends. When an ex raises Ford's protector instinct, a "pact" is made and no matter how hard they try, they cannot deny their attraction. Add in a couple of odd ball rescue pups, one a gentle giant, Maybelline, and the other a fierce tiny terror, Tank, and they are all done for. Ford had a rough childhood and has always "fallen" into the background of her twin sister, Layla. Skye, always the neutral color, quiet twin, where Layla is the bold, outgoing one of the pair. When Ford does the unthinkable and doesn't pay Layla a bit of attention, Skye falls just a little more. He makes her see she's perfect in her own way. The chemistry between these two is undeniable. This is a short quick read, but it's a heartwarming love story, from the dogs to the humans. There is nothing missing and although a shorter story, it still delves into the background and buildup of the love story and development of each character. As usual Lori Foster pulls you into the pages and keeps you hooked from beginning to end!
Forces Of Nature by Maisey Yates I had never read a Maisey Yates novel, but will definately be from now on. This is a fast paced happy story. Remy had a rough childhood until his best friends family took him in. Lydia the best friends little sister, is the ultimate savior of any any animal in need, and hopelessly in love with Remy since they met. When Lydia shows up at Remy's door with his father's mistreated dog, the dynamic between the two begins to change. Remy must overcome old hurts and his mind telling him he'll never be good enough. Lydia finds her bravery and let's him know finally, exactly what she wants. I would highly recommend this quick read. The story and character building is great.

Title: The Two of Us Author: Lori Foster Format: eBook Publisher: Kensington Publishing Publication Date: March 25, 2025 Themes: Family, romance, friendship, relationships, pet ownership, pet rescue, human/animal bond Trigger Warnings: Animal rescue, profanity, homosexuality, relationship trouble, difficult childhoods, animal mistreatment
What a sweet little novella! This is a very light and pleasant read. It contains two stories. The first is “The Odd Couple” by Lori Foster. Ford Caruso agrees to pretend to be the boyfriend of his sexy neighbor, Skye in order to get rid of a troublesome ex of hers. Of course, they fall in love for real and rescue two dogs together. Just as sweet as it sounds. The next story is called “Force of Nature” by Maisey Yates. I liked this one best. Lydia Clay has been in love with her brother’s best friend, Remy, for most of her life. He thinks of her as a little sister. Lydia lives to rescue pets so when a dogs shows up at her shelter, she immediately thinks of Remy. She helps Remy adjust to dog ownership and the rest should be obvious.
Both very enjoyable and feel-good stories. The Odd Couple is an enjoyable fake romance leading to a real romance story. The characters are likable but, for me, it’s the dogs that lead me here. I love how they rescue dogs together!! The dogs are quite the odd couple too so I see what the author did there. Force of Nature was a friends to lovers while rescuing a dog. I had an easier time relating to Lydia and Remi than Ford and Skye in the preceding story. The Clay family was fun to get to know and I loved Hank, the dog.
All in all, both stories were sweet and well-written. Both had relatable situations and well-established characters. Both had charming dogs that made the stories extra special. I’d recommend this book to anyone.
The Two of Us is a compilation of stories from two award winning authors, Lori Foster and Maisey Yates. Each author brings a story about partnership, purpose and pets. Who could go wrong with a cuddly new friend and romance?
The first story up is from Lori Foster titled, The Odd Couple. Ford and Skye are neighbors who notice each other but really don’t interact until she stops over asking for help. He isn’t that keen on helping her but when his friends convince him, he wonders why he hadn’t made an effort to get to know his intriguing neighbor before now. Skye isn’t one to keep relationships outside of the convenience factor. Always having a date at the ready for social events is a plus. When the latest guy won’t take the hint to beat it, she goes off to enlist the help of her neighbor to pretend to be her current boyfriend. Skye and Ford embark on a ruse to throw off her suitor but wind up finding what each had been searching for this entire time. Throw in some old friends and new furry friends and this story has longevity and a happy ending for the characters.
Force of Nature is the second story written by Maisey Yates. It features Lydia and Remy and is a story about what makes a family. Remy didn’t have a good home life, his parents really couldn’t be bothered with him so he found a family that could. The Clay family welcomed him in to their home with open arms. He found a family without really looking. Lydia had a crush on Remy for as long as she could remember, and when he moved into their home it was the best of both worlds. Too bad he had no idea just how strong her feelings for him were. When Remy’s father dies and his animals become front and center in her world she knows who she needs to enlist help from. Remy doesn’t want a dog, but somehow Lydia convinces him as only she could. Remy and Lydia find that love happens at different times for different people but when the connection is real, the rest doesn’t matter.
Skye has a creepy guy after her and asks her neighbor for help. Ford is single, a but unwilling, but decides to help her out.
He was such a good guy, and she had often been in the background and he let her shine. They fall in love, obvi and it feels real and good.
As for the dog theme, they both get dogs and try to work that out as they are not really together yet. Everyone belongs together, awww.
In the other story we have Lydia who loves animals and has everything. She is also in love with her brother´s bestie Remy. She gets him a shelter dog that belonged to his deadbeat dad. And they heal each other through this process. And discover some things about each other.
A good story. Usually these are always so hands off! But the family knew Remy and it was him who felt unworthy.
Good narration with different voices and they came alive..
And as he and Lydia work together, it looks like an old dog can actually teach this brooding cattleman some heart-warming new tricks . . .
I've enjoyed both of these authors in the past. I haven't been reading them lately, so I decided to pick them up again. I'm so glad that I did. Both stories are very good, and I liked them. I did find that I was able to get into Fosters much easier but that is most likely because I've been reading her for such a long time that even with my break of her, I was able to jump right back into her. Yates, I enjoy but I read her a lot less.
When I started the, The Odd Couple right away I felt like it wasn't the first book, so I ran to look into it, and I was right. So, if you follow me, you know I hate reading out of order, so I had to read the two books prior. I enjoyed them so I knew I'd be enjoying this one too. Which I did. I liked how this one didn't fall into the same track as the others. Yes, it seemed like she had a problem man in her life, but she wasn't in any danger. I enjoyed both Ford and Skye. I also liked her sister and I'm glad they are getting closer. Plus, the pups are so much fun.
Force of Nature is a good story I love how much both Lydia and Remington. You can't help liking people who are good to animals. The story is fast moving but I felt a bit off in the beginning. I was almost like the story started before the first page. I don't like that 'dropped into the story' feeling. Because of that I felt the story lack a bit.
As a whole this both stories are very enjoyable and worth the read.
Skye and Ford are next door neighbors but they aren’t friendly. When Skye needs help getting an ex boyfriend to leave her alone, she asks for help from Ford and his friends. The two of them realize quickly that their attraction is very real. He is a pharmaceutical sales rep so he keeps odd hours and she is a clothing buyer for a store so she is often traveling. Can they find a way to spend time together as a couple? Skye and Ford are both reluctant to get into a relationship. The author uses their interests in adopting a dog to show that they are ready to have a relationship. Skye has a twin sister that helps her see that she wants to explore her attraction to Ford. His friends play that role for him. This is a quick short story. It includes family, friends, insta love and dogs. Both the humans and the dogs are odd couples. Book Two Force of Nature Remy recently lost his father. Lydia brings him his dad’s dog after his dad dies. Remy and Lydia have always known each other but the simple act of bringing the dog changes their relationship. Remy lives a comfortable life on his ranch after selling some programming work he did. He plans to be alone. He has never considered pursuing anything with Lydia because she is already like family. Lydia works at a shelter. Lydia has a lot of animals she cares for. She has always liked Remy but she knows he is a loner. At first it seems like the animals might keep them apart because he doesn’t feel about the animals the same way she does. In the end, the simple act of taking Remy the old neglected dog, opens the door for them to pursue something more. The honest truth is that neither of these stories stuck with me. I can’t remember anything about Book 2 - Force of Nature and next to nothing about Book 1 - The Odd Couple. I usually love these authors but this just didn’t hit the mark for me. I will read more from them in the future because I usually like their writing.
The First book in this Anthology is The Odd Couple by Lori Foster. The main couple is Ford and Skye, but the odd couple is the dogs. Maybelleen is a Mastiff, and Tank is a Chihuahua. Skye and Ford are neighbors, and Ford flirts a bit. But when she puts off friendzone vibes, he backs off. She comes over one day when he and his buddies are hanging out and asks one of them to be her fake boyfriend for an hour or two. It's to discourage her ex. Ford teases her a bit over it, and she leaves, saying it was dumb to ask. After his friends give him a hard time, he goes over. It goes from an hour to several dates. You go through the trials of a relationship with them, and they even adopt Tank and Maybellen together. They were best friend doggies in the Animal Shelter, and they each adopted one to let them stay together. So you also experience the trials of first-time dog owners. Throw in her twin sister and her relationship drama, and the drama between the sisters, and it's a great read. This book was fast-paced and entertaining. I'd say a 0.5 for Steam, as other than a kissing to groping scene, most love scenes fade to black or stop at the bedroom door.
The second book is Force of Nature. This story is about Remy and Lydia, his best friend's little sister. It starts with Lydia trying to convince Remy to take in his estranged, late father's dog, Hank. He will be a first-time dog owner, so Lydia spends a lot of time with him to get Remy and Hank comfortable with each other. As they spend time together, Remy comes to realize, Lydia isn't a little girl anymore but a beautiful woman. She is special to him in ways he doesn't understand until the end. She'd loved him for years, and it's kept her from having any meaningful relationships. This story is so sweet and a fun read. It's fast paced and keeps you drawn in to see what is going to happen. 1.5 on steam.
This book had 2 stories in it. Lori Foster wrote The Odd Couple and Maisey Yates wrote Force of Nature. I enjoyed both stories very much. They explore how a love of animals can affect and grow relationships.
The Odd Couple
This story by Lori Foster explored the relationship between neighbors Ford and Skye. Ford is determined not to engage in relationships and retain his bachelor status. He sees his friends’ relationships with their spouses and enjoys that they found love but feels it is unattainable for him. Skye lacks the confidence to enter a long relationship. Then, Skye breaks through Ford’s barriers while she finds that Ford’s admiration of her builds her confidence. They are shown through the love of an unusual bonded canine pair that it is possible for them to find love together. It was a heartwarming story with some humor thrown in through the canine’s antics.
Force of Nature
This story by Maisey Yates is about a couple who have known each other since childhood. Remy thinks of Lydia as a little sister. Her family cared for and took Remy in as a teenager because of his own parents’ abuse and neglect. They’ve shown him what a loving family can be and they continue to provide him with love. Lydia, however, has had a crush on Remy since teenage times. She has cared for injured animals since childhood and, when she brings Hank to Remy, he feels he must take in the neglected animal because it was his father’s dog. Hank and Lydia show Remy that he has the capacity for love but he can’t seem to allow himself to go further because he fears he will repeat his parents’ patterns. But his love continues to grow ad Hank and Lydia become vitally important to Remy.
I was so excited to read this book. It contains 2 novellas from two of my favorite authors.
The Odd Couple by Lori Foster I absolutely loved the story and the characters of Ford and Skye. They were neighbors who had encountered each other here and there. But it wasn’t until Skye had a huge favor to ask. She saw Ford out in the backyard with his friends so she went over to ask her favor. She wasn’t essentially asking Ford, she was asking if any of the men could help her. I gave her so much credit for starting out with if you’re married I don’t want your help. Showed her moral character right from the get-go. Well, Ford did decide to help her out with this favor that she needed. It brought them so much closer. So much closer that, they even adopted dogs together. Dogs that could not be separated because they were so attached to each other. You have to read this book to understand the connection that they had, that neither one of them was expecting. And Maybelline just stole my heart! I absolutely LOVED it!
Force of Nature by Maisey Yates
This is Lydia and Remy’s story. They definitely had extreme different backgrounds. Remy came from an abusive father and a mother that neglected him. Lydia however, came from a loving family. So loving that when Remy needed a place to live, they took him in and made him a part of the family. This was very hard for Lydia because she crushed and then fell in love with him. Of course in Remy’s eyes, she was off limits. He considered her to be like a little sister, and she was also the little sister of his best friend. But now at the age of 27 Lydia asks Remy for a huge favor.
I don’t do spoilers so you’re gonna have to read this book to find out what happens.
This was such a cute and quick read! I am a sucker for big dogs and so Maybelline quickly pulled at my heart strings.
I loved Ford's character - the bachelor who quickly developed a protective nature and feelings for his gorgeous neighbor, Skye. When Ford steps in to help her out with an ex, both of their lives start to change for the better.
I knew Skye was a strong, independent woman when she marched over to Ford's to ask if him or his friends were single, hoping to enlist their help with her nuisance ex.
Not only were the main characters captivating, but Ford's friends and Skye's sister added that special found family/family element that warms the heart.
Sometimes, I find it hard to get into a love story that happens so quickly, but Lori Foster did an amazing job with this one!
Force of Nature * MAISEY YATES
I adore a good romance that is years in the making! I love how in Lydia and Remington's story, you can instantly tell they are truly good people who will clearly fit together if they allow it.
With the help of Hank, a dog who clearly needs to have his days filled with the love he hasn't had until Lydia convinced Remy to take him, the two find themselves spending more time than usual together.
Soon, Remy starts to see Lydia as a woman, not his best friend's kid sister. Lydia has been crushing on him for years, and once she realizes how he's looking at her, sparks fly.
This was a fantastic quick read! I loved how both characters were able to help the other see how uniquely special they were. The animals, Remy's new dog, and Lydia's large group of many critters added such an adorable element to the story.
Thank you to Lori Foster for an eARC in exchange for my honest review.
The Two of Us by Lori Foster contains two novellas: The Odd Couple by Lori Foster and Force of Nature by Maisey Yates. Both are easy reads.
The Odd Couple - Lori Foster Ford and Skye are next door neighbors but had never formally introduced themselves until the day Skye walked over to request a favor from Ford or one of his friends who were visiting. Ford accepted the "business arrangement." Skye is a loner and doesn't want friends. Neither Ford nor Skye is interested in relationships. When Skye's twin sister, Laylee, shows up at her door and wants to stay for a while, things begin to change for everyone. Ford and Skye decide to each adopt a rescue dog, Laylee quits her job and asks to live with Skye, and life becomes a little chaotic. Ford and Skye both learn a lot about themselves as they try to bring some kind of order into the lives. I love the characters and the dogs in this story. Great read!
Force of Nature - Maisey Yates Remy and Lydia have been friends for many years. Remy actually lived with Lydia and her family while he was in high school because he had a bad home life with his mother and father. One day Lydia brings a dog from the animal shelter to Remy's house and wants Remy to take it. He doesn't want to but accepts it after she tells him that the dog had belonged to his deceased father. The dog had been abused and was in poor health. Remy identified with the dog because he had also been abused by his father. Lydia helps Remy take care of the dog, Hank. As time goes along, their feelings about each other become more than just a friendship. Remy begins to worry about whether or not it would be inappropriate to get into a relationship with Lydia. I loved the characters and the dog in this story. Great read!
This is a two books in one novella that I really enjoyed. The characters were well written and told great stories. I loved the adoption of pets they really added to the story. I loved how the rescue pets not only found new families to love them but they also played match maker.
The Odd Couple by Lori Foster ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ford and Skye are neighbors, they knew the other existed and watched each other from afar but they haven't introduced themselves. When one day Skye comes over and asks for a favor, to help her get rid of her ex that is just not taking a hint. After the first introduction there is a chemistry between them that draws them together. Ford's friends help in getting them together and its sweet. These two realize how alike they are and their relationship grows as they grow to understand each other. I loved their dogs and the craziness that ensues after their adoption. This was a sweet story and I loved all the characters.
Force of Nature by Maisey Yates ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Remy and Lydia have known each other since they were young. Remy's best friend is her brother, and he is like family to them. Lydia is a sassy woman who loves animals, she gets it in her head that she is going to make him realize that he is for her. It is obvious that these two characters belong together. I love stories about found family and sibling's best friend, and this story did not disappoint. I really enjoyed this story and this was my first book by this author and I am looking forward to reading more of her books.
Received ARC in exchange for voluntary honest review from author.
Lori Foster:The Odd Couple…..what a great feel good story . Skye & Ford are neighbors who hadn’t officially met, until Ford was having a gathering & Skye walked over and asked if any of the guys were single? She’d recently called it off with a “friend” who wanted to be more than just friends & he wasn’t taking no for an answer…she needed someone to pretend to be her boyfriend,so the “friend” would back off. Everyone was already taken, with the exception of Ford & he reluctantly accepts the position. The fake boyfriend thing doesn’t last long & sparks soon fly. Shortly after they agree to adopt 2 bonded rescue dogs,a St. Bernard named Maybelline for Ford & a feisty chihuahua Skye names Tank. Family dynamics, romance & rescue dogs, what more do you need! Maisey Yates:Force of Nature……another heartwarming story. Remy grows up with an alcoholic father & an uncaring mother. He’s best friends with Michael who has the family he longs to have. At the age of 16 he moves in with Michaels family & Michael has a sister Lydia who’s a few years younger & has a huge crush on Remy, unbeknownst to him. All grownup & back living in the town he grew up in,Remy is commitment phobic due to his childhood. An abused hound dog named Hank comes into the rescue center ,after his owner passed away (the owner happened to be Remy’s estranged dad), Lydia takes him to Remy. Lydia still has major feelings towards Remy & asks him to do her a favor,he becomes obsessed with her & she’s all he can think about. Do yourself a favor & grab a copy, you won’t be disappointed. Release date is on 3-25-‘25
What could be better than rescue dogs bringing a couple together? Two novellas with the two dogs bringing two couples together 😉
THE ODD COUPLE by Lori Foster
Ford Caruso and Skye Fairchild have been neighbors for almost a year with few encounters but perhaps some watching of one another when Skye arrives to ask for a favor from Ford and though he wasn’t sure he wanted to be a fake date…he couldn’t not help his neighbor out. Little did either know that their lives would change and that two dogs at the pound would become part of their lives as they became a couple. I now wonder if Skye’s sister Kaylee might end up with one of Ford’s friends.
FORCE OF NATURE by Maisey Yates
Lydia Clay is a rescuer of animals…and perhaps of people, too. When she takes a dog from the rescue to Remington Lane’s house hoping he will take in his evil father’s dog the two never realized that Hank just might change their lives. Lydia’s crush of many years finally flourishes as it is time for their HEA…once Remington works a few things out and is ready to step into a glorious future.
These two stories shared the idea of rescue dogs being integral to the romance, had male leads that came from dysfunctional homes, and landed in a soft place with the perfect woman – and dog(s) for them. Fun, warm-hearted, delightful short stories that put a smile on my face.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the ARC – This is my honest review. 4-5 Stars
As a longtime fan of Lori Foster, I was eager to read *The Two of Us*, and I wasn’t disappointed. It includes two heartwarming, animal-filled romances—Foster’s *The Odd Couple* and Yates’s *Force of Nature*—that beautifully explore love, healing, and the bonds that rescue dogs create.
**The Odd Couple by Lori Foster**
Foster’s talent for creating relatable, lovable characters shines in *The Odd Couple*. Ford and Skye's fake relationship turns into something real, with the help of two mismatched rescue dogs, Maybelline and Tank. Foster's writing captures the charm and depth of her characters, blending humor, warmth, and emotional authenticity. As a fan who knows the power of dogs in making a house a home, I loved how animals played a key role in their relationship.
**Force of Nature by Maisey Yates**
This was my first time reading Maisey Yates, and I’m hooked. *Force of Nature* tells the story of Remy, a brooding rancher, and Lydia, an animal rescuer, whose bond grows through a rescue dog named Hank. Yates creates a deep, emotional journey where both characters heal and grow, making this a compelling romance.
**Final Thoughts**
Both stories in *The Two of Us* feature endearing characters and the life-changing impact of rescue animals. Lori Foster’s *The Odd Couple* is a fun, heartwarming read, while Maisey Yates’s *Force of Nature* brings a more emotional depth to the table. Together, they make a delightful collection that showcases love in all its forms. Perfect for animal lovers and romance fans alike!
I really enjoyed both stories in The Two Of Us. I absolutely loved all the rescue animals and how it shined such a positive light on adoption.
The Odd Couple
This was such a cute story about Ford and Skye. I loved their meet cute and how everything blossomed from there. Ford was adorable with Maybelline and Tank. Ford was such a nice guy and so wholesome. You could tell he has a huge heart and loves deeply. Skye was so relatable with her self doubts and uncertainty. I loved that she grew as a character and really came into her own.
I loved how the story spotlights rescue and how sometimes the dog you least expect is the perfect one for you. I also loved that it showed how the new dogs need time to adjust to a new house and how you need to be patient with them. I of course loved both Tank and Maybelline and think they were an adorable pair.
Force of Nature
I loved Lydia!! She was such a relatable character and I loved how much she cared for all the animals. She was spunky but so compassionate. I really liked Remy too. I'm a sucker for a broken hero and Remy checked all those boxes. I loved watching him figure everything out. I really liked that they had such a strong connection from knowing each other for so long. Lydia's family was amazing too!
This was such a sweet story and I also loved how inclusive it was. I really enjoyed the story immensely and it's underlying plot. It was emotional and tugged at my heart. I love that so much of this is dedicated to animal rescue and I would definitely recommend it!!
Two stories in one book makes for an awesome read! Although neighbors Skye Fairchild and Ford Caruso rarely cross paths. That is until Skye goes to Ford and his friends for a favor and it’s a big one! She needs a pretend boyfriend to get rid of a suitor that won’t take a hint and leave her alone! Ford isn’t inclined to join her mad scheme even when his neighbor is attractive, but with the urging of his friends he jumps to her rescue. Maybe being boyfriend, even a pretend one isn’t so bad after all. The two neighbors grow closer and even adopt a misfit pair of dogs together but being in the shadow of her twin sister for her entire life, Skye doesn’t believe that the relationship can become more, especially after Ford meets her twin, Layla. Can the two find their HEA? Grab your copy and enjoy!
Force of Nature by Maisey Yates
Remington Lane had a rough childhood and being taken in by his best friend’s family was the best thing that could have ever happened to him. Lydia Clay, pesky little sister of his Remy’s best friend has always wanted to rescue every stray animal possible. She has been in love with Remy since she was a kid but there is no way Remy wants to even think of her in romantic terms. When Lydia finds an older starving dog that had belonged to Remy’s father, she knows just the person to help, but getting Remy’s co-operation won’t be easy! I love the interaction of these two and how their relationship grows. A fast and fun read that will warm your heart!
