Stonecroft Saga #15

Apache Ambush: Stonecroft Saga, Book 15

Rate this book
The south country beckoned, and Gabe and Ezra answered.

It was nothing more than a resupply trip to Santa Fe, but an encounter with the Tabeguache Ute and the Caputa Ute changed the course of their journey. It wasn’t until they came upon the massacre at a Mexican Hacienda and the subsequent attack from a rampaging band of renegade Jicarilla Apache that they would uncover a prospering trade in captives and slaves that would raise the ire of both Gabe and Ezra.

When a garrison of Mexican Soldados and one particular officer intervenes, things are not as they would first appear. Their purpose was derailed when an unexpected ambush by Apache would prompt a rescue expedition. When all is complicated by the intervention of slave traders, Comancheros, and the perpetrators masking as Mexican Soldados, only then does a simple re-supply journey become a vengeance quest, and all the blood that would flow would not be Apache!

This historical Western series will have you gasping for air and capture your heart.

Bob Rundell – Stonecroft Saga Bk 15 – Apache Ambush – Reviewed 4/12/21 – Read 4/4-5/21

An adventurous trip to Santa Fe for supplies leads to new friends and more conflicts!

It’s been a long hard winter, but Gabe and Ezra are sitting on the front porch enjoying this beautiful Spring morning, listening to the rams across the canyon practicing jousts for the upcoming battles for dominance. As the two rams walk away from each other, the men start to reminisce about their youth, back home in Philadelphia, PA., before they left to explore the wilderness of Spanish Louisiana and the mountains of the west. It has been eight years now and the men have families, met, and befriended countless, had numerous adventures, helped, and saved many, and still, they have that wanderlust that attacks them come Springtime.

As they discuss where they should go, they finally decide that a trip to Santa Fe would fit the bill. Picking up weapons for the young ones, plus general supplies, especially coffee and sugar. Also, it would give them a chance to see more places that they have not been to yet. Having made that decision, they just had to put the question to the ladies and get their input. Walking inside, both women just shook their heads.

The next morning the boys were ready to leave, each embracing their wife, holding, and smiling, then with a final kiss, they mount up and turn to leave and start this new adventure. But, as sure as the sun would rise again in the morning, each woman knew that their man would have to battle something on the way from or to home. Both women were confident in their men and their abilities. They knew that they would return to them no matter what happened, and if it was within their power.

And the story/adventure begins…

What did I like? Here we are in book 15 of the Stonecroft Sagas and I am just as excited, if not more, to read them as I was on the first one. Bob has that magic touch to bring the history of the west alive, and to make these two men the most exciting adventurers in the west. The gentle way that he brings his faith into the books is wonderful. Not overbearing but just the right touch for each reader to take as they please. Each book adds to the life of the men, the trust that they have in each other and their mates. The love that they shower on their families. The most incredible part is the amazing way that they approach making friends, helping, and giving of themselves if there is a need.

What will you like? Life can be as difficult as you want to make it, and the world could learn a lot from the actions of these two men, watch as they travel, befriend, help, and explore. Not only the lands, the gift of wonderous beauty given to each of us, but the helping hands that they offer with nothing asked in return. The excitement of the battles will ring into the night, the rise and set of the sun with the wonderous light displays. Learn from the teachings of the women, on how to use the earth’s gifts for good, and well-being. Enjoy learning of the old ways, how the land was used and protected to give life to the people. The animals giving substance to the people, not only in food but in many other ways. Bob’s books can be used for more than just reading pleasure if you are willing to go a bit further. He researches each one to give his best each time. Another snippet of history that can be a great addition to your Western Library.

Apache Ambush is the 15th installment of the Stonecroft Saga, and it appears that the author has no immediate intention to write a 16th. I have enjoyed the books by one of my favorite authors, and will be sorry if there are no more adventures of Gabe and Ezra. Apache Ambush ends with the wives putting their foot down, and announcing to the boys that the wandering is over, and that their present location is home where they will raise their children. The year is 1803, and the boys learn that the United States has bought much of the American West from France, and that President Jefferson is sending a group of explorers to examine what the country has bought. Gabe and Ezra have already seen much of the land and made friends with numerous Indian tribes before Lewis and Clark even left on their expedition. Gabe and Ezra, with their Indian wives and mixed race children, know that the red man will be replaced by the white man, the wilderness by farms and ranches, and the buffalo by the white man's cattle. Gabe and Ezra are intelligent, educated men who foresee that the West they love will be lost, although if any consolation, being about 26 years old in 1803, not lost during their lifetimes.

Somebody got Ambushed

I've read all 15 books of the Stonecroft Saga and the two main characters were always on the receiving end of ambushes; be by anyone of the twenty or so indigenous tribes and peoples they encountered, to the river pirates, the armies of the French, Spanish, Mexican and Americans !!!!

And they created their share of ambushes too!!

Encounters of every type that your imagination can conjure up, B.N. Russell can match them, all while he was writing these intriguing books.

And, don't start reading if you think for one moment that you can judge by just reading a few chapters, because B.N. Russell writes about the real deal.

The American Wild West long before it was tamed, with fictional characters like Gabe and Ezra entwined with real historical facts, and wrapped into 15 books that won't let you down as the reader of western themed books!!

Apache Ambush: Stonecroft Series Book 15

I’ve read the entire 15 saga book series and it has been a historical lesson of the US. Each book captures areas of the US in the East to the West to the South and to the Northwest coast. For those that have not traveled the US, reading about the adventures of Gabe and Ezra is a great starting point and a desire to see where they traveled for themselves. Of course these days the travel is by car, train or visiting National Parks and exploring.

Couldn't put it down

I started reading this series about 10 days ago, and as I finished each one, I just had to get to the next. I loved them all! I would read in the morning, the middle of the day, and in the late evening. Several days I finished the current book, borrowed the next one, and turned to the clock only to discover it was 3 in the morning!. Reading this series was worth every minute of lost sleep. It's a good thing I am retired!

Amazing

Russell has created a wonderful series that has all the necessary ingredients for a classic western adventure. What I find most amazing however is his ability to portray each scene so that you feel like you are right there with them. Colorful wording, but not overdone. A great author and stories.

A lot of detail, needs some degree of mapping

Excel!ent portrayal of characters. Very detailed description of landscape, a bit too much for m. Slows all his books down. Would appreciate some rough map of the books travels. Too preachy for me, I am respectful, but skipped over those parts. Good clean, enjoyable read.

I've read the entire 15 books. One after the other and enjoyed the entire series. The descriptions of the different scenery I found to be long winded but could almost feel like I was there.

Dove, Cougar, and the children weren't in very much of this one. Gabe and Ezra decide to travel to Santa Fe for supplies taking them through new country. Along the way they find friends among the Ute, but the Apache is a different matter.

Book 15 - the end of the Stonecroft Saga.

Book 15 and previous 14 books keep you spell bound and anxious to turn the next page. I, myself, enjoy reading about the early west and it's people and wonder how they ever made it day to day. We in this day grumble if one of nails break.
