Trouble is coming for Earth and for the people of Crownhill. The wolfmen were only the start. Trolls and ogres now roam these unfamiliar lands. And worst of all, other humans wait and plot against us. With no one else to lead them, the burden of protecting these people falls to me.
But I am not alone. Bridget and Sakura loyally stand by my side. And now, at last, I am finally reunited with Myrina, my oldest friend. She hails from the world of the Amazonians, and her people have lived with the System for countless years. They know the answers to questions we haven't even thought to ask.
With her help, we just might be able to survive the apocalypse. But she's got problems of her own. Her clan is at war and cannot give me their support. They lack the magic equipment to defeat their rebellious foes. Perhaps a newly minted Artificer might be of use to them.
Nothing is certain, and conflict runs deeper than I ever realized in this world after the Apocalypse.
I'm loving the Amazon Apocalypse series so far. This book was better than the last. It was tense, funny, romantic and filled with progression. I laughed out loud at multiple points, which is very rare for me.
I'm still impressed at the magnitude of these works. Most books in the genre are between 250-350 pages. Here, we get triple that and it still flew by.
I knocked half a star off for very minor inconsistencies.
Book 1 was half okay, half obnoxious; I gave up on this book only after 20% in. The MC is a moron, his friend is a moron, and I'm a moron for reading book 2 after how stupid I thought a large majority of book 1 was.
Marvin takes some time between books like authors used to, but when you get one it’s not a novella its an actual novel! This one wraps up a ton of plot points and makes you hungry for more. The next one will be even better. I believe in Marvin!!!
I'm enjoying the story quite a bit. I'm looking forward to the next one. I just finished this one here in July and unfortunately but also fortunately the next book is out at the end of this month. Technically speaking our main character has been at three ladies since almost from the beginning. It's just that the third lady has finally shown up to stay. The thing is is that the character comes off vastly different than what I thought she was going to be like at the beginning of the first book. I'm interested in seeing how it develops. There was also a hidden secret revealed that changed my opinion of the Amazons. I'm also curious about the next love interest and whether or not the author is going to go down that route. This all rather vague but I don't want to risk spoiling anything for anybody. So I will say that there was a not so subtle twist in the book that I spotted immediately upon them letting the readers know that there were multiple Caesars. I don't know if other storytellers have gone down that route though I would be surprised if they had not or if it was just telegraphed way too early. Regardless that's my little nitpick. I enjoyed the story and I'm looking forward to the sequel.
Finding myself a big fan of this series. Also a pleasant shout out for how long the book was, we get more book in a single book! What’s not to love??
Standard fare for actual review, pacing was pretty good, dropped at some points but picked up when needed. Characters were great, Myrinas personality was a little different than I was expecting but not bad either way. World building is still good and looking for to further expansions. Plot developments were on point, possibly because we had more book to fit it into but either way I’m cheering.
Sorta kinda spoiler alert?
One thing I will say about the plot with the three kings, was I could not help but feel like the MC needed to be hit over the head with a Clue by four at the prison. For how smart he’s seemed to be so far it felt like it was out of the ordinary for him to not pick that up like straight up. Also at the end there but that was taken care of rather succinctly which I was very relieved/alittle surprised and very appreciative of. All up a very good read and looking forward to the next.
The last quarter or so of the book was less fun and even a little frustrating. I really enjoyed the off world adventures in the first majority of the book and, it was a great way to break pace with the more hectic apocolyise happenings on Earth. These new off world political twists threatens to destroy that dynamic.
The other thing that came up toward the end is, like others, I noticed that Carter seemed to selective lose sense of his own abilities and even drop a few wisdom points so to speak. I think it was done to make the fights/arc move more to the shape the author wanted. While I can't criticise the overall progress and shape too much, I was still left a little more frustrated and unsatisfied than I'd like.
Overall a good addition to the series. The author is showing great improvement in his craft and I hope to see continued developement in his skills.
I will say that there's an opportunity for things to get too frustrating to bother reading if the next book gets away from the author. Hopefully that doesn't happen. GOOD LUCK AUTHOR-SAN!
Carter has now liberated Crownhill under his banner. He has a death curse on him, because he cheated the system and came back from the dead. This death curse causes monsters to flock to him but he doesn't get any experience for killing them. He can't stay near the city because of it drawing every monster in the vicinity to the city. As such he has put people he trusts as a city council the take care of the mundane ruling of the city. He has a farm in the mountain near the city that he had prepared for the apocalypse. He now has both Sakura and Bridget to support him. New shards have been added bringing Ogres and Trolls and goblins into play. However his greatest challenge is the Three Kings that rule the prison. They got their levels from killing humans. Carter must defeat his foes and unite this extend shard under his banner. Since he's reached level 25 he is now allowed to talk to his friend Myrina on her world. Things are not going well on her world as the enchanters have rebelled and they are at war. Bridget is pictured on the cover.
I'm already mad that three paragraphs in they retcon Bridget having gotten wolf ears for her now having Hugh Jackman in Brian Singer's X-Men hair. AND SHE HAS WOLF EARS ON THE COVER!
Also it's NINE HUNDRED PAGES LONG FUCK ME. I don't know if I can make it, especially since they're going with aggressively jealous girlfriend types for Bridget and Cherry Blossom. Update: I've almost made it. The aggressively jealous girlfriend thing is still not very amusing.
Carter's attacks of conscience are really annoying. The dude is just randomly guilty about shit he doesn't always have direct control over. It's one thing to be moral and kind of selfless, but another entirely to be guilty and regretful any time something goes wrong. This particularly comes up during the slightly comedic boss encounter during the last act.
This book was looooooooong and didn't blow me away but it was a pretty fun read.
This book improves on everything from the first and doesn’t follow the typical apocalyptic formula most system litrpg books use. The people have mostly gotten over the whole “the world is ending” and are carving out their own lives as they overtake the shard. People are getting electricity going and getting governance set up. Even renting out apartments again lol. I loved the frequent visits to myrinas world to keep it interesting. And I like that as carter becomes more powerful than many and richer he doesn’t become Infallible and unbeatable. I was almost very mad at the end but it got rectified quickly in a funny way. My only complaint is it felt like carters iq dropped to that of an infant the moment it mattered most in the tail end of the book…
Sure this is technically a harem book however the love scenes are minimal. Good apocalypse story with good characters. The author doesn't flood the reader with new Members of the harem and concentrates more on world building and character development. Though there is some crafting it is fairly light unfortunately. I enjoy the MC's practicality and hIs mores. This book had a few maddening twist but that's a compliment to the author to elicit that reader response. I look forward to the next book and see what the next shard integration brings to the series.
4.5 stars. Nearly got a 4 since there were some elements I wasn't fond of, but overall it's a good read. I suspect that a bit of editing (probabaly 50-100 pages cut) would have tightened this up, as it seemed longer than could be justified by story progression. In any event, it didn't put me off, so we'll see where this one goes. Partial spoilers follow.
The bit with Lisette near the end was unnecessary. At least unnecessarily drawn out, to the extent that I skimmed a lot of it to get to the bits that mattered. This alone nearly cost the book a star. There were some other bits that didn't add much, but this was the most egregious.
I love the characters, the story, the universe, and the relationships. I do not like some of the inconsistencies. None of them are story-breaking, though. I.e. a chapter ends with three opponents drawing their swords, but the next chapter begins by explaining that one has a bow, one a sword, and the last a spear.
Grammar and mechanics were good, with only a few instances that interrupted my flow of reading by making me have to reread the sentence to figure out what it meant.
Personal preference for me would be more spicy scenes, but it was at least pointed out some of the times that they were intimate.
Same MC, same characters, same world (more world), but? I don't know, I feel like Mr Knight got into this habit of way over explaining things from the MC's inner monologue. I actually skipped a lot of it because it just got tedious. Turned out it was unnecessary after all because I didn't miss anything. I love this author and and I like this series. I'm following all of his current series. I really hope this does not become a trend because I can't stand that incessant inner monologueing.
The MC has to take control of his slice of post apocalyptic refuge. He had already defeated wolfen, but then had to face ogres, trolls and worst, other humans. He also had a chance to visit the amazon home world to assist their war effort, while gaining info on how to maximize his build and what to expect from the system initiation. Of course wars come with politics and the factions on the amazon world are insidious.
Maybe little bit better than the first book, however I just skipped through the sex scenes as the rolling of my eyes would have mede the drop from my head. There were several times that the villain was way more predictable.
It looks way too much to a power gamer having a grindfest. As the protagonist is OP all the hurdles he meets are dealt with "Super easy, barely an inconvinience".
As a gamer that does not have time to play computer games the books feel like a letsplayer playing pc games which is nice.
I really like this story. It has lots of action, has lots of personality builds and world building as well. I like the romance too, although it gets a little cheesy sometimes but if that's not your bag you can always skip those parts. there are challenging battles and I also like the humor as well. personally I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series I hope it comes out soon I hear it's going to be in July.
Loved the continuing adventures of Carter and his crew. A lot of great excitement happened in this book. Some necessary plot threads were wrapped up in this novel, but the seeds for book 3, and beyond have been planted. it will be interesting to see where Carter and his allies go from here as Carter continues to level up one way or another! If you like to book one, do not hesitate to pick this second book up!
The deliberate obtuseness of MCs towards things that are readily apparent to the reader gets pretty tiring sometimes. Tho i do recognize the need for it, i guess.
This was a pretty good action packed story. Marvin Knight writes fairly long novels, not the half-day 300 word novels that most harem fantasy writers throw out, and i like that. Look forward to the next book, with all new threats to the crownhill shard.
The whole situation brought about by his quote. " friend is foolish. It's stupid as hell. He gets way over what he needed to do for this person. Well, it's cool. It's great. He loved her and all that, but he's putting up with all kinds of dumb stuff because of her and then his other, ladies The jealousy is just toxic, it's very toxic. The whole thing's toxic, it's not a proper herring book
Unlike a lot of books of this type that only have time to cover one or two scenarios, this story covers many battles over several planets and various territories. It is a great read that happily takes many days to read. I will greatly enjoy when the next book comes out!
Carter has a wild ride, building his city while helping Myrna family putting down the Shade fall rebellion. Now this new Elder is in the mix with a plot of her own. Carter deals with the 3 Kings along with the 'power behind the throne' in the guise of a high level seductress. Fast paced with action an spice I'm looking forward to the next book!
It's got some issues, the protag being a dunce is the most obvious one. There is enough book here that it can fade into the background, the series has a lot of exceptions for me, I can see a lot of good going for it being a great binging series. If you need something to compare it to, The path of acension is a good option, lots of different genres mixed up here plenty of world building.
A real.joy to read!! As with all.of this authors works this series has been exceptionally entertaining!!! I've personally loved the blend of magic, adventuring and apocalypse events!!!
Nice continuing entry in this litrpg apocalypse. We learn more about his childhood friend and intrigue and war on her side. We get Carter working on consolidating humanity on his shard. I will say that I am really looking forward to the next installment.
The second book in this series did not disappoint. The MC continued along his path to become the ShardLord. Trials and tribulations abound. I am very much looking forward to the third book in the series.
This book continues to do well in action and world building. The political components are larger scale and still at least equally well done.
Most importantly, the romance is more centered in this book and is well done. The relationships remain a bit more surface level, but the author uses many small moments and throwaway lines to paint a picture without interrupting the story.
It was good, but it takes too long to resolve the last king situation and our Scholar of Forbidden Knowledge suddenly seemed uncharacteristically clueless. The harem is slow growing; I keep waiting for Gobgob to get evolved and thrown in the mix. Overall, I'm enjoying the series so far.
There was a lot more cringe/cheese this time which took me out of the story. Generally speaking it was a bit boring. The characters weren't all that interesting either. Actually I found Myrina to be severely annoying to the point where I'm not continuing the series.
