The great war begun in Morigu: The Desecration continues as the warlords of the alliance seek to strike back at their enemy. Their only hope lies in the Morigu, a creature made with the power of the Goddess and possessed by the Earth's pain.
5.5 stars. This book is a fantastic example of a "wall to wall" action fantasy epic with more battles and creatures packed into 200+ pages than any book I have ever read. All this action is described with the "epic heroic" prose that is a definite nod to Tolkien (i.e., the heroes are larger than life and the bad guys are pure evil). Great fun and highly recommended!!
I seem to be in the minority of folks who didn't really love this book. Perhaps I just wasn't in the right frame of mind. The prose was outstanding. I thought it was very well written. I just never got really caught up in the story. There were many, many characters and I never really got attached to any of them. The supposed main character, the "Morigu" of the title, wasn't even on stage much of the time. I rather liked him but we didn't spend much time with him.
There were lots of battles but never described in any detail. The language was elevated but it also seemed to me that in the battles we also remained elevated as viewers of the battles. I never felt a part of the action. Most of the time it was along the lines of two epic armies clash. There is strife and give and take and one wins. In contrast, when I read something like Robert E. Howard's Hour of the Dragon, the epic battles feel like they are surging all around you.
Apparently this is book 2 of a series and I didn't know that. Perhaps if I'd read book 1 first I would have been better prepared for this one. Don't take this review as damning. Read what others have said to see if this book may be for you.
this was the book that i base all other fantasy on. i can't say exactly what it is about it but to me it surpassed lord of the rings. i am still saddened by the fact the the series stopped after the second book. the speed was perfect, the characters spot on. the mythology was what i'd want a fantasy world to be. this book started me on reading fantasy and i've never looked back. i sadly just signed up for this and have not had a chance to rate any more then this series (my all time favorite) and a few that i have read most recently. i have read hundreds maybe thousands of fantasy novels and series since this one and have never topped it.i have read it 3 times but not for years which is why i've not done a detailed review. i would have read it more but every time i feel a void from the lack of anymore books in the series
Really awesome two books, but be warned ... this series is unfinished. A few years ago Mark Perry posted on the Amazon page for this book saying that he acknowledged all the requests but unfortunately would not be able to write the next book.
Not quite as good to me as the first book but still a very good book. I just wish that there had been more to finish the series. I looked for information about the author but found very little. Wonderful example of fantasy.
This book is my second all-time favorite epic. It would be first except the series is incomplete. Only 2 books in the series. The characters are inspiring, the scope epic, and the prose supreme. No matter how many times I've read it, if I pick it up, I can't put it down.
