Sunny Miller enjoyed a top paying business career in New York until she received a letter letting her know her momma, Tessa, needed her. She got on a plane and rushed back to her home town of Monroe, North Carolina. She had no idea what would be facing her when she arrived home. It only took a few minutes, talking to her momma, for Sunny to realize her momma's mind was changing. She couldn't remember things and was becoming very anxious. Sunny didn't realize how her life was about to change when the nice looking doctor informed them Tessa had Alzheimer's. Miss Beulah, the lifelong friend and sister by choice of Tessa, was determined to stand by her side. They opened up to Sunny letting her know secrets they had hidden away. These secrets would follow Sunny for the rest of her life. Sunny Miller cherished the day she came back home. She finally started to live the life she always wanted, the life she always needed and the life that was just waiting for her to accept. This book is filled with laughter, understanding secrets, rebuilding relationships, and finding true love. It also deals with the understanding of Alzheimer's and how it takes a group of caring people to help deal with the journey of this dreadful disease.
I thought the book “Do I Know Me?” by Phyllis F. McManus was a captivating story. When Sunny Miller finds out her beloved mother has Alzheimer's, she gives up her fancy job in a big city to move back to her country home and help take care of her. Not only does Sunny learn what Alzheimer's is and does but she also learns about family secrets and a little bit about herself as well.
This was a good book! “Do I Know Me?” was not just an interesting story but also an educational one too. I learned what it could be like living with someone who has Alzheimer's. I also learned to look for warning signs. McManus’s story is when Alzheimer's was still a rather unknown disease. The story is also a love story. Not just between a man and a woman but a love between close friends and family. I loved the character of Sunny. I felt her pain when she realized life would never be the same again for her mother. I did feel she rushed into the relationship rather quickly, but I understand why she did. I wished I had a Beulah in my life. A friendship like that is so rare.I also admired Sunny's mother for standing up for Beulah all those times. She was a strong woman. The ending of the story made me cry but I was also left feeling happy. I always have considered myself a Southerner because I was raised in Alabama, but I have never for the life of me heard of putting peanuts in a bottle of Coke! That and the potatoes in the biscuits have made me want to move back to the south and try everything I am missing out on. Overall I really enjoyed this story and the characters in it. I hope to read more of McManus’ work in the future. *I reviewed this book for Readers' Favorite
Lately I have been reading a lot of fast paced supernatural thrillers, When I opened this book and began reading, I found something delightfully different. I was astounded and happy to settle back and relax with a heart touching story. This is a story of life, love and yes, heartache. When Sunny is called home to help with her mother by Miss Beulah, a friend first, and a housekeeper second. Sunny's mom, Tessa has Alzheimer's. The author has dealt with the subject of this terrible disease with grave, love, warmth and a touching story that also contains a few skeletons of the past and a bridge that connects with the future. Well done book by an author I am definitely going to be reading more of.
This book had so much heart. Even though the story revolves around an illness, there is love in every word. I found myself smiling as the slow southern pace of life could be felt in the rhythm of the words. It took me back to a simpler time. This is a wonderful story and well worth the read.m
This is a beautiful story, one you must read, because what these characters in this story go through affect so many. I did reach for my kleenex box every now and then, so have one handy, this story brought it home for me.
