Recently widowed, Dr. Margaret Boynton leaves England and sails to Africa. She finds herself up against dangerous animals and terrifying witch doctors. Determined never to fall in love again, Margaret finds her most formidable enemy is her own heart when she meets the enigmatic Jeremiah Lyon.
A scoundrel whose scarred face and ice-blue eyes make strong women weak, Jeremiah Lyon, legendary great white hunter, resents his assignment to escort a middle-aged doctor to the mission hospital. She isn't what he expected...and neither is his unguarded reaction to her.
When a secret society of cannibals kidnap Margaret, can Lyon rescue her before their chances for a future are destroyed forever?
Loretta C. Rogers is a fourth generation Floridian. She lives in Citrus County, Florida, with her husband, Wayne. She shares her husband's love of motorcycles. When not writing, she and Wayne take road trips on their BMW touring bike. She says when on the motorcycle, her head fills with ideas. Of course, writing and reading rank highest on her to-do lists.
The love of reading was planted in Loretta before she entered school. Even before first grade, she was able to read, and before she could write, she drew story pictures. In her early childhood there was no television in her home. After-dinner entertainment was listening to her father read.
Her dad used to hide his Zane Grey and Louis L'Amore books inside his sock drawer. Heaven forbid, during those times that a child should read the word 'damn' in a book. However, when her father was at work, Loretta would sneak the books, careful not to disturb it's hiding place, and read. She knew if she ever got caught, she'd be in real trouble. As crazy as it may sound, Loretta could actually see the characters and their actions inside her head. "Their voices spoke to me".
A chronic insomniac, Loretta says it's often the characters inside her head who keep her awake. On such nights, she sits at her computer and writes. She says getting the ideas out of her head is easier than tossing and turning all night.
Loretta is an eclectic reader who enjoys anything from a tear-jerk romance to a nail-biting mystery, but admits that historical westerns are her favorite genre and that cowboys will always be her heroes.
A member of Tampa Area Romance Authors, Romance Writers of America, and True Writers On-line, Loretta is an award winning poet. She is also a member of Sunshine Poets of Crystal River, Florida, and Florida State Poets Association.
A retired teacher, Loretta is the mother of two grown daughters. She is the grandmother of a terrific grandson who enjoys hunting, fishing and farming and a sweet granddaughter who is artistically creative.
I received an e-copy from Netgalley in exhange for an honest review.
After a great tragedy Margaret needs a change of environment and decides to go to Affriva of all places. Not only is she a woman traveling alone, but she is also a doctor! Here she meets many obstacles in her path, Lyon included. In his opinion, a petite white woman has no business going into the jungle, but she surprises him and the attraction between them flares up. But being in the jungle can be dangeros in many ways, something these two of course will discover.
Both MCs have experienced great loss and are struggling to move on and not let it affect their lifes too much. The story is about acceptance, discovering strengths in yourself and open up your heart to new people and places after heartache. The setting in 1910 Africa was believable, the descriptions of the wilderness and tribes were detailed and vivid. The romance part is somewhat chaste, fitting that time's accepted behaviour on the subject, but itis also sprinkled with the freedom and boldness you can find in the African jungle where western societyrules have no influence.

This was a well written historical romance in the 1900’s. Margaret Boynton - an English doctor who just lost husband and son - decides to move to the African jungle on a whim. It is there that she meets Jeremiah Lyon - skilled hunter and love of her life... They have to face many perils to finally get their HEAs. - dangerous wild animals, snakes, witch doctors and cannibals. Maggie’s battle for acceptance in this strange and foreign land is suspenseful and funny at times. Pretty light and tame romance... I love Maggie’s fierceness of character and the slow buildup of the romance. Copy provided by Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
I was given a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
An unimaginable tragedy sends Dr Margaret Boynton running to the African jungle in 1909. There she faces creatures of all sizes, witch doctors, cannibals and Jeremiah Lyon. Here she battles for her place in this strange foreign land and heals her heart in the process.
This is a light, well written historical romance. I enjoyed the depiction of the people Margaret encountered, her sass and independence (she's an upper class 20th Century British woman) and Lyon the strong, gruff, fierce protector.
Plain romance isn't usually my style but this was a sweet, quick read and the foreign land added an element of extra interest.
I listened to this book on audio and personally didn't care for the narrator. She had the voice of an older lady which didn't match a thirty year old woman or the tough male character. I recieved a copy for free and this is.my honest opinion. I usually read paranormal, regency, highlander or scifi so this one was different and didn't hold my attention as well. There is action taking place as she discovers that everything in Africa could kill her, the animals, the people, the disease and so much more. Lyon is the one man that will protect her. I may have liked the book more if I had read it versus listening to it.
Instead of re telling the story as other reviewers have, I will just give my personal opinion. The plot is a fine one. But I must say it reminded me of Tarzan. I felt Lyon was a little too modernized for growing up in Africa without his parents. Also I recognized some current sayings, that did not seem to ring right for that era. I did not have the desire to read every page with anticipation.
