***HAPPY PUBLICATION DAY***

This book is a complete delight. The illustrations are colorful and eye-catching. The story is both an exploration of color and how it can be changed when mixed with other colors, but the phrasing is so funny that it made my 4 1/2-year-old granddaughter laugh many times. As an example “ just think what you can make with them, monkeys floating in a green sky, birds flying through red clouds or frogs jumping into a yellow lake, open your imagination and explore the world of colors“

Some of the combinations are just hilarious. There’s a funny little blue squirrel who lives inside a blue tree, there are green monkeys and an orange fox in an orange forest along with a purple rabbit hopping down a purple sidewalk.

After the story there’s an explanation of secondary colors and primary colors and how they can be mixed together. It even talks about a rainbow and how colors always appear in the same order, it explains about colors that are warm and those that are cool.

I can highly recommend this book for your preschooler’s library. Adults will enjoy reading it and the kids will learn and giggle along with the story.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

A book about colours aimed at Preschool to 1st Graders, with each page filled with colourful illustrations which follows a “dot” of colour with arms, legs and eyes – and, oh yes, a brush – as it shows all the things you can do with colour, like changing the colour of clouds to red and then birds, as well. You can change a lake to yellow, and make yellow frogs, as well as turning a tree and a squirrel blue. Mixing blue and yellow to make green sky, or yellow and red to make orange for the now orange forest and an orange fox. Mixing red and blue for purple for a purple rabbit that goes hopping down the purple sidewalk.

Near the end is a ‘chart’ showing the Primary colors, the Secondary colors, and what colors you get when you mix these colors, and which colors are ‘warm’ or ‘cool.’

This is a really clever book to not only entertain younger readers and soon-to-be readers, one that will keep them engaged for the amusing, comical illustrations while they learn more about colors, and even a bit about rainbows!

Gülşah Yemen and Çağrı Odabaşı, the Turkish author/illustrator team who subsequently collaborated on What Can You Do With a Line? , join forces in this picture-book examination of colors, and how to use them. From red clouds to yellow lakes, blue trees to green skies, the possibilities are endless! Primary and secondary colors are explored in the main narrative, while a brief afterword gives more information about colors in general...

After reading and enjoying the other title from this author/illustrator team, I picked up What Can You Do With a Color? with some anticipation. Originally published in Turkey as Bir Renk (literally, "one color"), and translated into English (and French) by the Montreal-based CrackBoom! Books, this is another title that is part concept book and part inspiration for young would-be artists. I liked the way that it subverted expectations, in terms of the colors chosen (green skies rather than blue, and so on), and appreciated the (very simple) color charts at the rear. The premise here reminded me a bit of Peter Reynolds' Sky Color , another picture-book that makes the point that artists are not bound to use particular hues, when depicting what they see in the world. Recommended to picture-book readers in the market for concept books about colors, or titles to encourage artistic expression.

A cute short and colorful story about colors and things in random colors like yellow lakes and green monkeys. It's fun and eccentric and also quite educational at the end, telling kids about colors and what colors to mix to get other colors.

I thank Netgalley for the ARC

A cute book about color theory for littles. I liked that as each color was introduced, the suggestions for what the reader could make with that color weren't the expected things; a yellow lake instead of a blue one, for example, or an orange forest instead of green. I appreciated the introductory color theory at the end also, explaining primary and secondary colors, but I don't see why it didn't name tertiary colors rather than just saying they were primary and secondary colors mixed (a minor complaint, not a huge deal). The illustrations were cute and fun, and this book should inspire young artists to play around with color!

"What Can You Do With a Color?" was a delight to read! I read it to my 4 year old son and it was a hit. Although he has already mastered all his colors, he thought it was hilarious when the book mentioned changing common things to different colors (ie. a blue squirrel). It encourages imagination which is something that is often forgot about in schools these days! I also liked the extension element of mixing colors. Overall, I think it is a great book and can be tailored to different age groups and for different purposes.

Yemen takes young readers through all the amazing things you can do with colors. The artwork offers examples of playing with colors beyond the normal options. The story teaches primary and secondary colors as part of drawing and creating their own worlds. Challenges to experiment further are included at the end of the book. Great for preschool and lower elementary level readers.

What Can You Do With a Color? is a whimsically illustrated picture book for children (of all ages) by Gülşah Yemen and illustrated by Çağrı Odabaşı. Due out 27th Oct 2020 from CrackBoom Books, it's 32 pages and will be available in hardcover format.
This is such an appealing and accessible little book. Thematically, it introduces the concept of color theory, what the primary colors are, what they look like, how they blend with one another into secondary colors, and a tiny bit about tertiary colors at the back. Each page has a little bit of easy to read explanatory text along with a 2 page illustration showing a red sky with red birds, a yellow lake with yellow frogs (and a smiling Loch Ness monster), blue tree with a cute bespectacled blue squirrel, and so on for the secondary colors. The "narrator" (see cover) is a little thumbprint squiggle figure who color coordinates with each of the pages.

The art is simple and appealing and will enthrall. The illustrations are also rich in small subtle details which bear a closer look. This would be a great choice for a "read-to-me" session as well as a search and find game with toddlers and young kids.

Five stars. This would make a superlative reading circle book, classroom library book, or gift.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes

The first thing I have to say about this book is that it belongs on every Pre-K and Kindergarten bookshelf, as well as all art teachers in elementary schools. It would make a wonderful gift for first time parents as well. The images are beautiful, the words have humor and are a delight to read to my child. She giggled and grinned while I read this book. Our favorite part was at the end where there was further color education on Primary and Secondary colors. I can't wait to read this to my other little one and see how he lights up at it. One of the cutest and fun books to read and look at that is about color for kids.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, author and illustrator for allowing me and my child this electronic version to read in exchange for my honest review.

This creative inspirational book is perfect for budding young artists. The author explores the primary and secondary colours and encourages kids to play, experiment and enjoy the wonderful gift that colours bring to us.

The author has included a chart exposing all the Primary colours, the Secondary colours and points out those that are warm or cool. It inspires kids to mix, match and have a blast choosing hues that make them happy. It portrays red clouds, yellow lakes, blue squirrels and an orange forest just to name a few. Reality? Fantasy? Whimsical? Classic? All are there for the choosing as imaginations are unleashed. "What Can You Do With a Color?" not only is very a fun book, it is an educational one as well and I highly recommend it.

Thank you to the author and illustrator, the publisher, and NetGalley for granting me access to this book in exchange for an honest review.

I read What Can You Do with a Line? first, and then hopped over to this book, which is clearly meant to be a companion. It's just as cute! This brief story introduces kids to colour theory while telling them about all the whimsical colour choices they could make for their drawings, like yellow lakes and purple cities. I love it, and I can see this being a tiny budding artist's favourite story. I would definitely recommend this book to fellow parents of young kids and to the early grade teachers in my life.

This engagingly illustrated title provides a nice opportunity for the youngest children to learn about colors. They will learn about primary colors (red, yellow, blue), secondary colors (green, orange, purple) and colors that mix the two (turquoise, magenta, amber).

This book can be used as a picture book to teach colors. I think that it would also be great for the kids who read this book to have watercolors or finger paints so that they can experiment with creating colors of their own.

Encourage a little one that you know to become an artist! Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title. All opinions are my own.

Advanced Readers Copy provided by CrackBoom! Books via Netgalley for review

What Can You Do With a Color? is a nice introductory book of colors for young children. It is very simpler and would be suited for smaller children, preschool, as there is no plot to the book. It introduces the primary colors and then goes into how they look when they are blended with each other. Towards the end, there is a chart that shows primary and secondary colors which is nice if you have a child that is into art, it could help them with their own art-making.

Overall a simple book with cute illustrations

This was an unexpected library shelf find. We've read a few colors books lately but what I really liked in this one was showcasing out of the ordinary colors use (red clouds, yellow lake, purple city, etc). It reminds me a little of the crayons quit book where colors don't always want to be used for the same things. It really works in this book and reminds me things don't have to be a certain color. I love the information pages at the end too and they were just as interesting to my 3 year old as the story pages. He's been asking for this one on repeat for a few days now.

What Can You Do With a Color? So many things!
This fun and vibrant book shows young readers exactly what they could make and reinforces the idea that their imaginations really are the limit of what is possible.
The unexpected colors are sure to delight young readers, and so this is a great teaching tool for learning colors and other concepts.
Many thanks to Chouette Publishing and NetGalley for the advance copy.

Review to be added to Amazon UK and US on 27th October 2020 - publication day!

I liked the idea behind this book, I liked how it teaches the primary colours and what new colours you can make by mixing them. My daughter was really intrigued and I am sure she will have a go at mixing properly when we next get her paints out – will make a nice change from her generally just making “brown” – it is 4 stars from me for this one – a cute little read

A nice book to help kids learn about color (and color mixing!)
Illustrations were nice to look at, and the extra detailing, such as the constellations in the green sky, were a nice touch.

Overall, 4/5- it seems a little advanced for younger children, but too simple for older children. There was no real story, which is my main reason for the deduction. It would be a nice book to give to a young artist.

It is all about creativity and allowing it to be, to exist and I love it! The illustrations are beautiful too and I like the small information page at the end on color (primary, secondary, etc.). Perfect!!

This is a cute, sweet, and simply picture book discussing color and imagination. The use of onomatopoeia words was fun and would make this a great read aloud book. I also enjoyed that there was some factual information about colors and color mixing in the back of the book.
