Rating: 2.5. Rounding down for writer choosing a simile comparing larger-bodied women to hippopotamases and smaller bodied women to gazelles. This was entirely gratuitous on the part of the author and had nothing to do whatsoever with the plot. The best thing about this book was the photo of Al Pacino on the cover. This book was one of those written based on the Screen Play of the movie by the same name. It actually is probably a good B movie--has many good/famous actors in the Cast. Downer of a plot but end is reasonably satisfying though still a downer overall. Al Pacino is a hard-working lawyer struggling in his career and personal life, a good man, striving for decency and fairness to his clients. He battles corruption and ultimately makes a choice to stand up for what he believes.
A true account of the ethical vagaries of the American legal system. Highly readable with compelling story telling.
With the movie version in mind, picturing actor Al Pacino as protagonist Arthur Kirkland added to my reading pleasure. The humanity of Arthur’s relationships with his elderly grandfather, Sam, and with his marginalised clients is inspiring.
As other reviewers have pointed out, I found the criticisms of women’s body types grating. Fortunately, these instances were few and far between.
I am usually drawn to Crime related books because I love to delve into the intensity of the evidence and the interrogations and even the court. This is not that book. This book focuses on the life of an attorney and the interactions he has with the people around him. From partners, to judges, to clients, and etc. It was well written and an easy read and I enjoyed it, even though it was not quite what I expected. I had not seen the movie before reading this book, however the book has inspired me to go watch the movie.
