Age Appropriate For: All Ages
Best for Ages: 12 and up (mild violence, mild romance)

While I have loved both Annabeth’s War and The Captive of Raven Castle, I have to admit that this is by far my favorite Greyson book so far.

Moving away from the realm of fantasy, Greyson takes us to the old west. Her story drops us in the middle of the action of girls that have been kidnapped from a stagecoach, and the story just is amazing from there.

My heart immediately felt connected with Grace’s. So many of the emotions that she experienced are ones that I have felt myself. She was so wounded, yet also strong. She was someone you wanted to hug and respected at the same time. Throughout so much of the story, you wonder why Grace is choosing to do some of the things she is doing, yet also not confused, if that makes sense.

Mitch was an amazing character, too. He reminded me of Ransom in Annabeth’s war, yet he was different. Mitch’s unconditional love and how he truly cares for Grace was so sweet. So much of the story focuses on their friendship. Yes, there is a hint of romance, but more on friendship.

You can always count on Greyson for solid faith messages, and this was no exception. This book held the themes of telling the truth, redemption, and allowing others to be there for you. Yet, more than any other story she has written, I feel the message within this book will minister to the heart of those who read it.

I never wanted to but the book down. That is probably the reason I didn’t and read it all in one day. It kept me flipping pages wanting to find out what happened next. When it was finished, I wished that it wasn’t over.

I highly recommend this to those who love western stories, light romance, and a whole lot of action.

I'm giving this 4.5 stars, not 4. (5 stars are saved for very special books.) I started reading with a bit of hesitancy. After all, I had never read this author before and I wasn't sure what to expect. I found myself drawn in to the story so much so that when I put it down, I found my mind replaying scenes, wondering what was going to happen next, and wishing I could go back and read some more. I don't remember ever wishing I could re-write any scenes or change something. The story was full of heartache, compassion, danger, and learning to trust. I'm sure I'll reread this story.

In good books you learn to understand the characters, in amazing books, you learn to understand yourself. Jessica Greyson's newest book was truly amazing.

You could tell that Jessica Greyson put her heart into Sufficient Grace, making it easy to connect on a very deep level with the characters. Grace wants to be independent of all help, and I can understand that. The author did such a good job of showing why independence isn't always the best thing for us. Some of the things Grace did I realized were things I was doing and made me want to stop. This book encourages open, honest friendships, even when you think it might hurt you.

I loved the main guy. He was awesome. Not too much to go into there, but I had to mention it.

I can't think of anything I didn't like about this book. The whole thing was just awesome.

2021>> I enjoyed this book very much the second time through. It's not this author's best work, but I still really appreciate the message and the characters. The one thing I had forgotten was that the the main character is suicidal at one point and I just hate reading about suicidal characters so that was hard.

Unfortunately quite the let-down. I hate giving books 1 star reviews! :(

Riddled with typos, poor sentence structure, and a lack of punctuation that my analytical mind couldn't get past, I was very disappointed in this book. The bare bones of the story could have been something good, but it was very slow, too mysterious (trust me, not the right kind of mystery either.), very confusing and historically inaccurate.

Very disappointed. :( And again, I don't give out 1 star reviews lightly!

Tried this one out when some friends were doing a buddy read. The story shows promise but the writing style is much too modern for the time period and the speech by the MCs continually uses recent words and slang terms, which ruined the historical feel for me.

4 stars. Overall, I enjoyed this book. This book wasn't edited, which was really hard for me; and there were many mistakes in the French. However, it was a great plot. I loved how slow it was and it hooked me from chapter one. I really liked Grace & the lessons in the book... and Mitch. Mitch was amazing (except for his ideas on romance). I loved the mystery & the crisis... So, I definitely will try this author again, especially since I believe this was her first book!. And I’ll definitely reread this book.

Content: Lots of hugging, holding a girl close, etc; and a kiss on her hair—before they were even engaged.

A Favourite Quote: “‘God had a purpose for my life even though what had happened to me seemed cruel and unnecessary to me. Because of it, God gave me a heart that allows me to make things right and let justice be done.’”
A Favourite Beautiful Quote: “This book is ... for the soul that is weary, for those who stand alone in the dark world, for those who are searching for someone to understand them and their dear heavy heart. It is for the person in the black fighting for the light. This is for you: to give you courage when all looks bleak, to give you hope when everything has fallen apart, it is here to tell you the fight is worth it. [E]ven in the dark places, there are flowers that bloom in the darkest moment of life.”
A Favourite Humorous Quote: “‘I am not going to let you travel alone again. I heard what happened last time you did. The next sheriff might not be willing to rescue my sister from villains, rattlesnakes, raging rivers, disturbers of classrooms, and track you down like there is no tomorrow when you get captured.’”

This has been on my TBR forever… probably since it was first published. I definitely wasn’t expecting chapter one to start off how it did. There were several comical moments in the book that made me laugh aloud.

It was without a doubt a Christian book. There was so much Scripture, so much pointing to God, prayers for God’s wisdom. I really appreciate that.

Even though this wasn’t all about the romance, there was just that chemistry constantly going between Mitch and Grace that it did seem to be the heartbeat of the book. There were no kisses (besides chaste kisses on the cheek/hair) or lustful thoughts. In that way, the romance was clean.

I’m not a big emotional person, so personally, I felt that the story was a bit melodramatic. But for someone who actually has emotions, they may completely identify with Grace. I did feel like she was such a perfect example of a teen girl who doesn’t know her mind when she thinks she does.

I absolutely loved Jessica Greyson's other books, Annabeth's War and Captive of Raven Castle, but Sufficient Grace was by far my favorite. Any book that can make you laugh, cry, smile, learn something about yourself, and discover something about God deserves high praise! One thing I really loved about Sufficient Grace is that Jessica focused more on emotional pain than physical. Grace's feelings were so deep and real that I found not only my mind but also my heart fully engaged in the story. Sufficient Grace brought so much joy and encouragement to me! Thank you, Jessica, for the wonderful book! I hope to see more of your books published in the future!

*Sigh of contentment* Another lovely reread by one of my favorite authors.

Poor, strong, Grace! I love how she tries to be kind to all despite their treatment of her.

And the deputy star 🌟👏 🫠...

Mitch, my favorite sheriff/deputy, so far in all the books I've read. He is so sweet and protective. Mitch was just who God knew Grace needed. There are so many things that spoke to me through the story and characters. The biggest is that sometimes the problem is that we've shut God out of our problems. If we will, but trust Him, He can and will give us the grace to get through and will never forsake us.

I also love near the end where they wrote letters to each other 🫶... it was unique and gave a deepness and realness to the relationship besides being just plain sweet!

CW: Murder (mentioned, non-graphic), Outlaws killed (non-violent), verbal abuse (also a slap), crying on shoulders, one use of bloody (in reference to a gun)

My Rating/ Age Recommendation:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5 out of 5 stars)/ 18+

Definitely wish to find more westerns like this one!

Parts of the storyline weren't my favorite, but I really found myself connecting to and rooting for the characters, which is a great sign. :) I adored how gentle and patient Mitch was with Grace, even when he (and I) didn't really understand why she was holding herself so distant. I was a bit afraid at the beginning that I wasn't going to like Grace very much, but I'm very thankful I was proved wrong! I'm really thankful that we didn't have to wait for the end of the book to understand her backstory, or for her to start letting go of some of her hurts and insecurities. I'd much rather watch a character learn and change gradually then go through most of the book angry and bitter and have a massive attitude change at the end. ;)

I liked the way Grace made friends and a place for herself in the town, as well as the way that Milly managed to be both a great friend and a total goofball. :P Grace's family situation was probably the biggest drawback of the book for me (along with a certain violent scene near the end); definitely a personal preference on my part, but family issues like this just make me sad. :(

The editing was pretty rough in places, and there were a number of modern-day expressions that felt out of place in the historical setting, but I liked the story enough in general that they didn't bother me as badly as they sometimes do. Overall, I enjoyed the story, and I just love the layers of meaning in the title. :)

Content--mentions of swearing; one use of "bloody"; kidnapping, threats, and murder; ; verbal and physical abuse (slapping); mentions of an unhappy marriage

My daughter recommended this book, and I LOVED it. I saw so much of myself in Grace--not one of the popular girls, often underestimated, trying to do the right thing without much support, not knowing who to trust, feeling so alone at times, etc. Yet God does not leave us there, and thankfully He blesses us with people who don't give up on us! This book was such an encouragement to trust in God and not lose hope! Of course, now it will be at least a week before I find anything else I want to read :) Keep writing, Jessica!

I mostly enjoyed this story, especially some very real moments of prayer. There are fun moments, intense moments, and pretty descriptions. As it drew near the end, though, I felt a little weary of the romance which became predominant.
If this romance is to be taken as an example for Christian girls, I would give a little caution. Is it wise for the main characters to pretend to be just friends when they are very much acting like a couple? The desire of the story to show God’s sufficiency and reliability seemed a bit lost compared to the male protagonist’s sufficiency and reliability. Once they are married, how will she respond when he ultimately lets her down, as every human is bound to do?
I wish we had seen more of those who influenced his life. She falls for him and commits herself to him while knowing very little about his background or current influences. Who are the men in his life from whom he will receive correction?
Mainly, my concern is that there are a whole lot of feelings (very natural!!) without, perhaps, enough prudence or purpose. As they begin their happily ever after, I wonder what is the foundation and purpose of their union? Is it simply the joy of being together, as it appears? This is not wrong, of course, and being in love is wonderful! But as a Christian book trying to portray godly romance, I would love to have seen something deeper.

I’m curious to read the sequel!

This book felt more like a sequel than a stand-alone book. While I found some aspects enjoyable, the overall plot lacked the stuff that would make me want to keep turning the page. Unfourtently I ended up skimming through most of the second half.

Mitch was a wonderful character but wasn't portrayed as fully as he could have been. Grace irritated me throughout most of the story. I felt that she was completely immature and hard to find believable as a character. Both Mitch and Grace could have been developed more. I didn't realize Grace was only sixteen at the start of the book. She seemed so much older.

I felt like the plot could've been strengthened. I was confused for most of the story and didn't understand why Grace was so upset. The story didn't seem to flow. One moment Grace is being kidnapped, the next she is surrounded by a rescue posse? Why are her fellow school-mates so nasty? It felt like there were gaping holes in the plot that could've been filled with some more information and action. I was extremely disappointed with the anticlimactic ending. I was expecting something big but the story plot fell short.

Also, on a side note, I saw several typos in both the book and in the format.

The story was there but should've had more revamping before publication.

Unfortunately, I can't recommend this book....

Note, somehow I posted a different review for this book. If you see it, disregard it.

What an action-packed, sweet, stirring, and humorous western tale! I do think Greyson should write us more of these!
Grace was such an enigma--always saying one thing and doing another. I felt so sad and exhausted for her. What a burden! Mitch was, ah! Mitch was a lovely hero to read--so patient, kind, understanding... I loved his understanding but it broke my heart to find out why he was so good at understanding where Grace was at in her life. We could use more manly portrayals in girls historical fiction, like Mitch. I had a suspicion of who he was based on and it was delightful to read the author's note at the end and find out I was reading between the lines correctly.
The fact that there are people in here I cannot understand fully or abide, is good, as it means they're too realistically done. :) My goodness though, how satisfying was it when she ran into Crystal again..
And Ryan! He needs a Mitch in his life too, ha!
There's plenty of action, sweet, slow-paced romance and a gaggle of interesting people to meet. Looking forward to more of her work in future!

This books was incredible. I was drawn in from the very beginning. Greyson does a fantastic job with how and when she reveals information so you are intrigued by Grace and her story. What exactly is going on? What happened in her past? What is her pain?

If you have felt pain, Grace is relatable. If you struggle with trusting and letting others in, you will connect with Grace.

Mitch was a great character. He is shown as strong, yet he's not aloof or unreachable. He's compassionate and cares about people. He genuinely wants to help Grace; in anyway she needs. If she needs a brother, he'll be that for her. If she wants a friend, he can do that too. But he never gives up on her. Near the end, it is revealed why he fights so hard for Grace:

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and could hardly stop reading it.

Inspiring

An uplifting story of characters who have been belittled, bullied, depressed and overcome obstacles in their life. Very good heartfelt story. The character endured everything with grace, as is her name. Definitely a book to read again! This would be a good story also for young adults and coming of age girls.

I couldn't put it down

What an inspiring story of hope even in the darkest of days. I couldn't put it down, and when I did I couldn't stop thinking about it. I love how it shows us how we can truly put our trust in God and He will get us through our troubles and how important it is know scripture. Great story!

Loved this story! Action packed, sweet, and full of godly truth. Jessica thoughtfully and realistically deals with tough issues (many of which I have faced in my own life). The story serves as an amazing reminder of the suffiency we find not in ourselves but in God’s all-encompassing grace. Highly recommended!

Very enjoyable!

I definitely recommend this book. Mitch and Grace's " relationship" was at times heartbreaking and also heartwarming. I did like Esperanza Springs and enjoyed the other characters. Would read more by Jessica Greyson.

Grace

A good, clean love story!
Grace is on her way home from finishing school, and is kidnapped! Mitch is the deputy that brings a group to rescue the girls. Mitch rescues Grace in more ways than one!

So much drama, so little time. This book was action-packed! I enjoyed reading it and felt the main characters were well-developed. I liked the way the author wove in biblical truths throughout the story. Anyone going through a hard time will be reminded that God is always there for them.

I started Sufficient Grace expecting a Western, with outlaws and sheriffs and deputies and gun fights and horses and some of the sweet romance that Jessica Greyson manages to weave into all her stories. Indeed, all that is present, plus school teachers, parties, a delightfully ridiculous best friend, and a horrific family secret. Out of all of these parts, Greyson has managed to create a story that is far more than a typical Western.

Grace is no Cassandra or Annabeth. She has no dealings with kings or wars to save her country. She is not skilled with weapons. Perhaps partially because of this, her character hit far closer to home for me. The battle she wages is for her family, for her heart, for her very life - and she has been very, very broken. The stubborn strength that keeps her going was painful to see, but in the midst of her hurt she is lovable, and by the end Grace had become one of my favorite female characters of all time.

Mitch is a main character who is far sweeter and more spiritually grounded than either Taleon or Ransom (I have to say it, much as I love them), which is exactly the kind of friend that Grace needs. At first I found him so good as to be irritating - I was on Grace's side, and wanted him to back off with his niceties and his hope, to leave her alone in the reality he did not seem to understand. But eventually she (and I) learned what exactly lay behind his cheerful smile and /why/ he was so desperate to reach her, and I could no longer fault him for his persistence.

Amazon says 5 stars means I love it - this is a story I love, and it is the kind that steals your heart before you realize what happened. The effect certain stories have on your life cannot well be reduced to a simple book review, and Sufficient Grace is one of those stories.
