As a species, people have tamed the Earth. Individually, in the face of a superior predator, we're all just as helpless as the day we were born. And a superior predator is out there. Humans may be the Apex predator, but there's something even more deadly. It's the Super Apex.
Ike Hamill writes fast-paced horror novels with strong, relatable characters. His books have gained a steady following amongst readers who enjoy his blend of sci-fi, paranormal, occult, and suspense. Whether focused on a small family trying to survive the move to a haunted house, or following a band of angry rebels determined to withstand an apocalypse, his stories draw the reader into the lives of real people in crisis. Readers are always sad to leave the characters behind when the book is finished.
Reviewers compare Ike to Dean Koontz and Stephen King—two of his favorite authors. His narrative often jumps between interwoven stories, presenting readers with a fresh perspective and keeping them guessing until the last chapter. Most of Ike’s readers are repeat customers. Pick up one of his books to learn why.
The book just jumped around too much and did not paint the scenes well. The characters were a little better. This is my first book from this author. If I did not see his other books while getting to the review page; I would thought he was a rookie. This book just feels half baked and not done in my opinion
I normally like reading Ike Hamill’s books. This was one I just couldn’t follow. He writes very other worldly stuff and this one was definitely other worldly- almost too much so. He commented at the end that it was supposed to be simple but ended up being complicated. As always the characters are well developed but I have to say the plot was hard to follow and the monster as well. The story kept me engaged but I didn’t understand the ending. The book will keep you drawn in so I recommend reading to the end and perhaps you will figure out the end.
I thought the plot was inventive; but needed a little refinement. I like how the author shares how he arrived at the idea. While I liked the characters, I thought they and the scene settings cloud have been better developed. I liked the reoccurring theme of the Hawaiian guys.
This story took place from a few different character's perspectives, which all eventually came together by the end to try to solve the mystery of what the super apex predator actually was. Two scientists, a tech and programmer, and a few people attempting a business robbery all ended up in the same business park, which happened to be the preferred hunting area/kill zone/territory of a creature so far evolved it was impossible to detect. A team of X-files type government agents are thrown into the mix to create even more obstacles, as they also research and try to use this creature for their own purposes. Loved it!
I would describe Super Apex as a good old fashioned monster story, but it is that and so much more. A unique story line with interesting characters and superb descriptions. An all around great story with some great twists and turns.
One of my favorite aspects of this book is a group of (law enforcement?) wearing Hawaiian shirts, flip-flops, and so on. Little details like shells denote rank. They’re highly serious, which is such a great counterpoint to the silliness they engender in others. Marvelous way to ratchet down the tension with a touch of comedy when necessary.
The characters are present all for different reasons and with different aims, which keeps things hopping! I got a little confused by all the twisting lines of plot, but I still very much enjoyed the story. In particular I wanted to understand more of this: “I know why some of us exist in multiple realities and why you don’t.”
I really enjoyed this tale; I just felt like it needed to go that little bit further in order to fall into place.
Super Apex by Ike Hamill was a very good book. A good, meat and potatoes, monster story! I noticed that there were some familiar characters in the book...and wondered if the books were tie ins...but they weren't. It was kind of cool though, having some repeat characters, kind of gave the book a "life", kind of made his other books feel like a "family." I'm not sure what the monster is/was but I absolutely loved the way it ended.
This was a very fascinating novel. Mr. Hamill is a great monster writer. You can always expect something new and interesting. I liked that this novel took place of the space of a very short amount of time. This story didn`t have a huge cast of characters, but they were all interesting and fit together well. I loved the ending. Ike Hamill has quickly become one of my favorite authors.
